DEKAPITATOR – Dan “Bulldoze” Shows The Meaning Of Thrash

DEKAPITATOR:
Bringers Of The Storm Before The Calm

Interview by Luxi Lahtinen

For the devoted community of Thrash Metal, California-based Dekapitator surely offers some thrills in this on-going year. The band is about to start playing gigs again, and what´s even more pleasing for fans is the 2nd album. Obviously very fittingly titled THE STORM BEFORE THE CALM, it will be released during this summer via Relapse Records. As we should already know, a frighteningly heavy & ripping old school Thrash Metal is Dekapitator´s own playing area, and undoubtedly many of us want to share the same box with them when the new album is out.

The 4-string torturer, Dan Bulldoze from Dekapitator reveals many interesting details about their forthcoming Thrash-tornado THE STORM BEFORE THE CALM. He also gives his personal views about both the past,  and current, state of the metal scene – not to mention how much he rightfully lov… (er…!), loathes some of those certain hyped bands that MTV wants to consider saviors of today´s metal scene.

Now let´s unleash our beloved beast and hear what Dan has to say about the common things surrounding us in this cruel world. We´d better fall silent and listen to him carefully as words of wisdom have hardly sounded any more convincing and stronger than those spit from Dan´s mouth…

Chris Reifert – Ex-DEATH, ex-AUTOPSY & ABSCESS

Chris Reifert – Ex-DEATH, ex-AUTOPSY & ABSCESS

Interview by Luxi Lahtinen

Chris Reifert played drums on Death´s legendary debut album, SCREAM BLOODY GORE. Since he parted ways with Chuck Schuldiner in 1987 (when Chuck decided to move from San Francisco to Florida) Chris formed Autopsy together with Eric Cutler and Eric Eigard. Autopsy´s 1st two albums, SEVERED SURVIVAL (released on Peaceville in 1989) and MENTAL FUNERAL (Peaceville, 1991) are nowadays considered some of the most classic and finest Death Metal albums of the whole genre – and every devoted Death Metal fan surely subscribes that somewhat easily.

Since the Autopsy´s coffin was sealed by the band´s last official studio album, titled SHITFUN (on Peaceville, 1995), Chris has worked with several side projects and bands; from Doomed to The Ravenous to Murder Squad, etc. – and finally with Abscess, in which he has continued spreading his filthy and sick messages for the whole world. The band´s latest work, HORRORHAMMER, was just released through Tyrant Syndicate Productions (owned by Fenriz of Darkthrone), and the album is about all that the title kindly wants already to suggest.

I got in touch with Chris some time ago and he agreed to do this interview about his entire career from the days of his first band Burnt Offering (he was just 15yrs old back in the day when he played in that band) to the current times of Abscess. So without prolonging your curiosity regarding our conversation done via email, let Chris tell more about his long career for the readers of Metal-Rules.com. So, go ahead Chris…

JON OLIVA – Jon Oliva’s Pain,Savatage, TSO

May 1st, 2007
by Marko Syrjala

INTERVIEW BY MARKO SYRJÄLÄ

Legendary singer, keybordist, guitarist, songwriter etc Jon Oliva has made a long and successful career in music world. Although he had already played in several bands in the seventies it wasn’t until the mid eighties that he found  real success with Savatage which was originally formed by Jon and his brother Criss Oliva. The band released many highly praised masterpieces like “Gutter Ballet”, “Hall Of The Mountain King” and the rock opera “Streets”. 1993 was a tragic year for Jon and Savatage when Criss Oliva died in a car accident. Despite the huge loss, Savatage decided to continue without Criss. The band released three more high quality studio albums: “Handful of Rain”, “The Wake of Magellan” and “Poets and Madmen” before band slowly went on hiatus in 2004. Although it’s been very quiet in Savatage camp since then there has been a lot of going on in the world of Jon Oliva. He’s been extremely busy with the rock orchestra band TSO (Trans Siberian Orchestra) and his new band Jon Oliva’s Pain. The latter just released their second studio album “Maniacal Renderings”. I had the honor to meet up with the legend while Jon Oliva’s Pain visited in < ?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Copenhagen last April and here is the latest info concerning Jon’s latest activities and future plans …

Chaosfear – The Drummer Danilo de Freitas

April 27th, 2007
by Arto Lehtinen

ChaosFear hailing from Brazil delivers highly skilled and aggressive thrash metal to the bone. Even though the whole band is pretty new on the metal map, the whole trio has gained experience by playing in other local Brazilian bands. The demo debut already proved the trio’s skills to create asskicking and whipping thrash.

The Brazilians’ debut album ONE STEP BEHIND ANGER will be re-released with extra bonus material added. The band’s drummer Danilo de Freitas explains a little bit more about the upcoming album and some historical aspects of ChaosFear.

ASTARTE – Vocalist Tristessa

April 25th, 2007
by Arto Lehtinen

Interview by Arto Lehtinen

Astarte, fronted by the former Voprhalack bassist, recently unleashed their fifth opus DEMONIZED featuring 13 hymns. The CD covers everything from extreme aggressive death/black to the melodic stuff. The guests on the album are pretty interesting and impressive people such as Attila from Mayhem and others. Astarte’s frontlady Tristessa found some time for the interview and was extremely pölite to answer the questions of Metal-Rules.Com. She tells a little bit more about how these guests were asked to appear on the CD and how the album was recorded and produced at the famous Tico-Tico studio in Finland.

TOXIK – Brian V Bonini and Josh Christian

April 20th, 2007
by Arto Lehtinen

How many of you still remembers Toxik which put out two albums in the end of the 80′s when thrash/speed metal was raging all around the world ?! As usual several thrash/speed bands having out put a couple of albums in the end of the decade usually vanished from the scene without leaving any trace just like Toxik. Now this melodic thrash speed combo has returned to the limelight. Both WORLD CIRCUS and THINK THIS have been out of print for years, but Displeased will be re-issueing both the album with bonus material within the year. Toxik will be seen on the European soil in the upcoming KEEP IT TRUE festival. It was about time to ask both Brian Bonini and Josh Christian about the past and the present of Toxik.

This Godless Endeavor: Staying Metal In The War Zone (#3)

April 17th, 2007
by EvilG

After the posting of 2 columns from Alex, we received a response from another metalhead in < ?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Iraq, Mustafa. The difference this time is that he’s not a soldier but a citizen living in Iraq! We asked Mustafa if we could post his message and asked if he’d like to add anything else…below are his words. We think it’s very cool to know that there are ‘brothers of metal’ even in Iraq so we’d like to give our readers the opportunity to hear what it is like to be a metalhead in this kind of a situation. It should put into perspective little things like being unable to find a certain CD or the release that costs a couple of bucks too much. Thank the metal gods we don’t all have to struggle though a situation like Mustafa finds himself in.

If you have any questions on the column, send them here.

CELTIC FROST – Tom G. Warrior

April 17th, 2007
by Luxi Lahtinen

Interview with Tom G. Warrior

Interview & live/off-stage  pictures by Luxi Lahtinen

Celtic Frost stopped by  Helsinki on 4th of April 2007, as a part of their co-headlining “Monotheist” tour with the German pioneer thrashers Kreator. Tour openers also included the Swedish blacksters Watain whose most primary task was, I guess, to warm up the night before the headliners jumped on the stage. The Tavastia Club show was completely sold-out, just like many of their other shows have been on this European tour thus far.

 < ?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I met briefly the legendary Celtic Frost frontman Tom Gabriel Fischer (a.k.a. Tom Gabriel Warrior) at one cozy-looking, 5-star hotel in the downtown of Helsinki about 5 hours prior to showtime. Tom seemed to be in a good and friendly mood for the interview. A friendly handsake, some chit-chat talking for starters - and both of us were relaxed enough, ready for discussing more.

We naturally discussed their ongoing tour, curfews, Giger, the band´s latest album MONOTHEIST, DVD plans and so on.

PARADISE LOST Nick Holmes & Greg MacIntosh

April 16th, 2007
by Marko Syrjala

Nick Holmes and Greg MacIntosh

Interview by Marko Syrjala

The British doom metal band Paradise Lost is one the most succesfull and best known bands from its genre. The band was originally formed in 1988 in Halifax and their debut album "Lost Paradise" was released in early 1990. During the following years they released such classic metal albums as "Icon", "Draconian Times" and "One Second". After a a couple of more "experimental" albums, like "Host" in 1999, the band returned back to their metal roots with "Symbol of Life" which continued from where they left off with "One Second" in 1997. Years have gone by and now we are living in 2007. Paradise Lost are just about to release their brand new album "In Requiem" in May and the first single release "The Enemy" is already out in most European countries. Readers who are willing to find details about the new album would be disappointed because this interview was done some months ago while the band was still in the midst of their recording process for that upcoming album. The band visited Finland last year and here are the results of my lenghty conversation with Nick and Greg backstage at Club Tavastia in Helsinki. CHEERS !!
