With a career that spans 18 years and 8 studio albums, Dark Tranquillity are veterans in their field. Far from retired this legendary act has continued to push their own boundaries without ever straying from their original sound. Their latest album FICTION is it another fine release and an album that you should add to your collection – that is, if haven’t already done so. I had the opportunity to catch up with vocalist Mikael Stanne and together we discussed, amongst other things, the creative process behind the new album as well as what it’s like to be a musician in Dark Tranquillity.

MALICIOUS DEATH – Tormenting grip on the bass´ neck, Bilibaldus

June 25th, 2007
by Luxi Lahtinen

Tormenting grip on the bass´ neck:
Bilibaldus from Malicious Death says his piece

Interview by Luxi Lahtinen
Live pictures by Toni “ElDiablo” Salminen (Metalscope.net)

Malicious Death from the capital of Finland, Helsinki, plays old school Thrash Metal that has much to do with the traditions and deepest values as far as a vintage sounding Speed – and Thrash Metal is concerned. The band has already recorded a couple of albums (DEVILIZATION on their own label, Rebellion Records in 2003; available as vinyl only - and WAR & POWER on Verikauha Records in 2005) – and is currently working on new songs for their next album that we can hopefully expect by the end of 2007.

Bilibaldus from Malicious Death was kind enough to tell us more about what the band has been up to lately, plus his own thoughts about the current state of the metal scene – what´s wrong with it and what are some of things in it in his opinion that spreads a´from-ear-to-another´ wide smile on his face.

However, be warned that some of you may find Bilibaldus´ comments and opinions insulting, and probably even somewhat disturbing – and Metal-Rules.com takes no responsibility for his any of his sayings, whatsoever.

DIMMU BORGIR´s Vocalist Shagrath

June 20th, 2007
by Luxi Lahtinen

Shagrath – Vocalist of DIMMU BORGIR

Interview and live pictures by Luxi Lahtinen

Dimmu Borgir was booked as one of the main headlining acts for Sauna Open Air Metal Festival this year. Other bands included Megadeth, Type o Negative and Heaven & Hell. Dimmu has been touring the globe extensively since April 23rd 2007 for their new album IN SORTE DIABOLI. The album has even climbed up to position 43 on the Billboard top 200 album list. That’s a pretty respectable achievement from an extreme metal band on a list that is mostly been dominated by all kinds of pop/dance music artists.

I met the band´s vocalist Shagrath at a very luxurious looking Hotel Ilves in Tampere 4 hours prior to their showcase at the main stage of the festival. Shagrath looked pretty tired after getting a minimal amount of sleep last night, so we decided to postpone the interview session with him for 1 hour so he could at least get a chance to eat something first – and get himself awakened a bit more before he got himself in the right mood and spirit to talk to Metal-Rules.com.

One hour later Shagrath arrives to the lobby of the hotel; a couple of friendly handshakes and he´s ready to answer to all the questions that this patient journalist wanted to inquire from him briefly. What kinds of amazing wonders can a good lunch really do for a person… ;o)

ANNIHILATOR – Jeff Waters

June 20th, 2007
by Marko Syrjala

JEFF WATERS

INTERVIEW AND LIVE PICTURES BY MARKO SYRJALA

TRANSCRPTION BY NEIL BATTY

Canadian thrash band Annihilator is the lifework of guitarist Jeff Waters, who founded the band in Vancouver in 1984. It took almost five years and numerous line up changes before band released their 1989 debut, ALICE IN HELL, which was an unqualified triumph and epitomized the state of the art in terms of thinking man’s thrash metal in every aspect. Album was a success but more changes followed. Original singer Randy Rampage decided to leave and he was then replaced by Coburn Pharr who recorded album NEVER NEVERLAND with the band. Album was again very successful and band did a lot of touring across the world with such names as Judas Priest. Third album SET THE WORLD ON FIRE was released in 1993 with Wayne Darley being the only remaining member alongside with Jeff Waters himself. That album was a way different compared to older albums, it was much more oriented into pop/rock but it still did quite well during the time when grunge invasion was about to come. In 1994 band lost their record contract and they broke up but it wasn’t too long when Annihilator resurfaced with another line up. Band released a series of albums: KING OF THE KILL, REFRESH THE DEMON and REMAINS where Jeff handled vocal duties by himself while but Annihilator never again enjoyed anything similar to their original success despite Water’s’ retreat to thrashier terrain. In 1999 band did another attempt to re-find their glory days when they re-united with their original singer Randy Rampage. Band released album CRITERIA FOR A BLACK WIDOW but reunion didn’t last too long until Randy was out again because of his drug and alcohol problems. It was time of another singer and then Joe Comeau stepped in. Annihilator released two high quality albums CARNIVAL DIABLOS and WAKING THE FURY with Joe before he was surprisingly out after the release of live album DOUBLE LIVE ANNILIATION in 2003. Canadian native Dave Padden replaced Comeau and hes been in the band since then. Annihilator has lived though many ups and downs in their career but whats most important, band has always survived and now theyre once again back with their 12Th studio release called Metal. Band visited in Finland, for the first time in sixteen years, on last April while they were on tour as a special guest for U.S band. I had an opportunity to sit down with Jeff Waters in Helsinki before their show in House of Culture and here are the results of our lengthy discussion ENJOY!
