Metal Church – Kurdt Vanderhoof

July 14th, 2006
by Arto Lehtinen

The legendary Metal Church had been booked to the almighty Swedenrock festival 2006 for the first time ever. Of course it was more than obvious the man behind Metal Church Kurdt Vanderhoof needed to be interviewed for Metal-Rules.Com. The Seattle five piece has struggled thru the years since the early 80′s and now returned back to the limelight with a renewed line-up and a new album “THE LIGHT IN THE DARK”

Guns n Roses: Live in Helsinki 2006

July 13th, 2006
by Marko Syrjala

07.07 2006 Hartwall Arena

Helsinki, FINLAND

It’s been about fifteen years since the last time Guns ’n Roses played Finland. Back in the day they were one of the biggest bands in the world and they played two sold out shows at the Ice Hall in Helsinki. Lots of things have changed from those days. Singer Axl Rose is the only member left from the original line up. Over the past few years the band has cancelled more tours than they have actually played and there have been constant changes in the band’s line up. A new Guns ’n Roses album has been in the works for over a decade already and still no one knows for sure if that album is ever coming out? In spite of all this, it’s amazing that the band seems to be more popular than ever. Many things may have changed but they still sold out two Hartwall Arena shows within few minutes…

Dawn Of Azazel Frontman Rigel Walshe

July 12th, 2006
by Arto Lehtinen

Interview by Arto Lehtinen

Live Pics by Brat

Dawn Of Azazel hailing from New Zealand got catapulted to the worldwide stage when the local tabloids and CNN became interested in the band’s lyrics. Despite these media interests this Kiwi trio has gained a reputation as an extreme and brutal death metal squad with two killer outputs called THE LAW OF THE STRONG and SEDITION. The combo recently returned from a US tour with Incantation and Vital Remains, and the band’s frontman Rigel Walshe tells a litte bit about the the SEDITION album and the hassles with the media..

Nile – Karl Sanders

Karl Sanders – The guitarist & vocalist of Nile
Interview and live/off-stage pictures by Luxi Lahtinen

The US catacomb warriors Nile hit on the Finnish soil on May 1st 2006 for the very 1st time, having touring mates Yyrkoon from France and Australian Psycroptic along with them. This was Nile´s 2nd leg of the European tour, a continuation for their successful “Annihilation of the Wicked” world tour which started last year.

Since the band was in Finland for the very 1st time, I felt an urgent need to find out why they had so well managed to avoid coming to Finland before – amongst other things, like a common brotherhood of metal fans, the troubles the band faced in Estonia, voodoo witchery and so on.

It was the vocalist and guitarist of Nile, Karl Sanders who I found taking pictures outside of the venue with his digicamera, about 3 hours before their gig. While he was taking some pictures from one of the harbours of Helsinki, I decided to join him, and the recorder was put rolling after his permission…

Atheist – Kelly Shaefer

July 1st, 2006
by Luxi Lahtinen

Atheist - Vocalist Kelly Shaefer

Interviewed by Luxi Lahtinen

When talking about a highly technical and innovative Death Metal,  Atheist, – along with Death and Cynic, are one of those bands that broke a bunch of musical boundaries on their way towards the success they gained during the late eighties, and the first half of the ´90s. The band´s catalogue consisted of only three albums, but they all were very unique yet groundbreaking in their own way. They set certain standards for the concept of ´technical Death Metal´. There is no wonder why many consider Atheist´s second album, UNQUESTIONABLE PRESENCE, as one of the finest Death Metal releases of all time It certainly was that very album where Atheist´s sound was sharply culminated, being a real masterpiece of very ambitiously played, highly dynamic technical Death Metal, with its occasional and cleverly done jazz-tinged parts.

Atheist regrouped in the beginning of 2006 in order to do an exclusive run of both festival and club appearances in Europe this summer. Many people who never got to see Atheist playing live, now have a chance to see them one last time even if a couple of original Atheist members cannot participate on the tour for some obvious reasons (2006 also means 15th Anniversary of Roger’s death), but you can read all about them (and more) from the interview that I recently conducted with the frontman Kelly Shaefer of this mighty Floridian tech-Death Metal group.

Obituary Guitarist Trevor Peres

June 29th, 2006
by Arto Lehtinen

Interview and pics by Arto Lehtinen
Transcription by Gemma Ellis

Obituary, the long time death metal squad from Florida, have carved the unforgettable  marks to the metal scene by unleashing nothing but killer death metal albums. This legendary five piece was a headliner of the third stage of the Swedenrock Festival and frankly the heaviest and the best act of all of the other ones for sure. I managed to have a short chat with the Obituary guitarist, Trevor Peres, before the Floridian death metal outfit hit the stage. The interview situation was rather bizarre as doing the interview on the backstage when some other band was terrorizing on the stage was quite weird. But however here is something to offer and enjoy….

VoiVod – Vocalist, Snake (Denis Belanger)
Interviewed by EvilG
Interview Questions by EvilG and Arto
Transcribed by EvilG

It must be hard for VoiVod to talk about the painful topic of Piggy’s death and to continue the band without him (Denis “Piggy” D’Amour passed away on August 26, 2005 due to cancer). Despite Piggy’s physical absence, he is still quite present since his guitar tracks for the forthcoming VoiVod album KATORZ were already prepared in advance. In this interview with VoiVod vocalist Snake, we talk about the new album, playing live, DVD plans, and much more.  Enjoy!

Callenish Circle – Ron Tijssen

June 15th, 2006
by EvilG

Interview with Ron Tijssen
Interview By AsassinKiller

Callenish Circle is certainly a band that since the incredible Flesh_Power_Dominion gained a lot of attention from press and fans alike. These Dutch men carry high their countries flag by making top-notch Melodic Death Metal that crushes mediocrity within the genre.

Their latest opus is [Pitch.Black.Effects] and it showcases a new sound for the band. Electronics have started to play a bigger role in the compositions, but fortunately the band has not forgotten the CC sound that they developed throughout the years. I contacted Ron Tijssen and this is what he had to say on the new album, the current state of the band, Chuck “God” Schuldiner, and a Black Panther. Enjoy.

Tim “Ripper” Owens of Beyond Fear

May 23rd, 2006
by Luxi Lahtinen

Tim “Ripper” Owens of BEYOND FEAR

Interview by Luxi Lahtinen & “The Sentinel” KILLgast
Live pictures by Luxi Lahtinen

Thanks to Sari Ikolampi for the help with transcription

The legendary New York Speed/Thrash Metal patrol Anthrax visited to Helsinki, Finland 21st of April on their “Cursed Earth” Euro-tour, bringing along Beyond Fear with them; a new band fronting no less than Tim “Ripper” Owens (ex-Winters Bane, ex-Judas Priest, Iced Earth, Brainicide). As most of you should be aware of the band by now, the band has been built around 5 experienced musicians off which two members, John Comprix on guitar and Dennis Hayes on bass, have also won their spurs in Winters Bane whereas Dwane Bihary (on rhythm guitar) has previously played in Missing Skin and Eric Elkins (on drums) destroyed his drumkit in such line-ups as Cyptkicker and All You Fear.

As Beyond Fear´s self-titled debut album has already been impressing a large number of metal fans all around the world with its straight-forward, heavy, somewhat Priest-tinged yet honest modern sounding Heavy Metal approach, it became way too tempting to avoid meeting Mr. “Ripper” here in Helsinki, and ask him about the ground reasons for forming Beyond Fear. And that´s what we did eventually; sat down comfortably at the dressing room of the band and started inquiring a fair number of things about the band in sheer excitement.

Here´s the whole conversation with Tim “Ripper” Owens in its entire lenght yet uncencosed form in which we couldn´t completely avoid asking about Priest, Iced Earth or Winters Bane either.

Thanks to Black lodge for the promo pictures of the band.
Thanks to Niklas “Hobbe” Andersson at Sound Pollution for help with the interview.

Bullet is a new up and coming Swedish act that has recently released their debut album titled HEADING FOR THE TOP. The CD is an excellent release and I have taken the opportunity to pose these questions to the drummer of Bullet: Gustav.

Bolt Thrower- Barry Thompson and Karl Willetts

May 14th, 2006
by Arto Lehtinen

Interview by Arto Lehtinen

Transcription by Gemma Ellis (Thanks!)

Last year, the long time British death metal war mongers Bolt Thrower released a brilliant album called THOSE ONCE LOYAL. The band kicked off a long European tour that for the first time ever saw Bolt Thrower finally visit Finland. It was a plesant suprise to have the opportunity to talk to both Karl and Barry before they unleashed one hell of a gig at Nosturi in front of over 500 maniacs.

Hansi Kursch of Blind Guardian

Interviewed by EvilG

Transcription by Christy and EvilG

Here’s an interview with Blind Guardian vocalist Hansi Kursch that was conducted in late April. We spoke about the band’s latest single FLY and the forthcoming album for which the band feels they’ve reached a point where they may just take things to the next level. Also discussed is the band’s new drummer and Hansi’s comments on Savage Circus (which features BG’s former drummer), and the band’s orchestration project.  Enjoy!

Patrick Ranieri from the legendary Hellwitch

May 10th, 2006
by Luxi Lahtinen

Patrick Ranieri from the Floridian underground metal legends HELLWITCH

Intro and interview by Luxi Lahtinen

Granted, the Floridian Death Metal scene has always been one of the most influential and known scenes globally. Bands like Deicide, Malevolent Creation, Morbid Angel, Obituary, Atheist, etc. are some of the biggest names from that particular area. However, it´s kind of a shame that some bands with a more extreme edge, that also came from the same particular area at that time, never got the same kind of chance to ´hit it big´ unlike some others did – even if they deserved more recognition and attention then they actually managed to gain for themselves over the years. One of those bands undoubtedly is Hellwitch who were resurrected from the verge of break-up in 2005. The band had recorded a couple of highly popular demos in the late ´80s (TRANSGRESSIVE SENTIENCE in 1986 and MORDIRIVIAL DISEMANATION in 1987) that were massively circulated around the underground tape trading scene for many years; one full-length album SYZYGIAL MISCREANCY for Wild Rags! Records (rip-off!) in December of 1990, one mini-CD titled TERRAASYMMETRY which was released on a small Austrian label Lethal Records (another rip-off!!) in 1992, a compilation titled FINAL APPROACH, containing sort of a lifespan of 14 years of Hellwitch´s music which was also supposed to be the last Hellwitch release ever to kind of sum up the band´s long career (I´m glad it wasn´t - Luxi) – and last, but not least the 5-song demo ANTHROPOPHAGI in 1994. After that year, the band remained more or less in an ´on/off´ state for years until sometime around in February 2004 Pat Ranieri and Joe “Witch” wanted to re-establish their contact again and began to practice the old songs just for fun. When things started to become more serious, Craig rejoined on bass in April 2004. The band played their first show in 6 years on July 24th, 2004 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. with Malevolent Creation and Divine Empire. Around September 2004, J.P. Brown rejoined to Hellwitch as 2nd guitarist. That month the band also played again with Deicide.

In June 2005, the band locked themselves into the studio environment to record 4 Hellwitch songs with producer Gus Rios (Malevolent Creation / Kult Ov Azazel) – and that 4-track promotional effort was baptized by the title THE EPITOME OF DISGRACE. Talk about a nearly perfect timing, but I thought it was somewhat an ideal time to contact the true mastermind of Hellwitch, Patrick Ranieri, and to ask him about the regrouping of Hellwitch, and of course about both the past as well as naturally the future of the band…
