The Black Curse Over Hellsinki April 2009

The Black Curse Over Hellsinki was a two-day black metal mass festival arranged in the mid of April. During two days, the most obscure and nihilistic black metal outfits got on the stage to spread their own blasphemic messages in front of hundreds of people. However, the second day was without any doubts extremely tempting and interesting because of the headliner of the day being Root hailing from Republic Czechia and two leading black metal names Impaled Nazarene and Enochian Crescent. As usual hundreds of people had arrived to testify the ritual during these days and especially the venue was entirely packed on the second day.

Daedalus guitarist Andrea Torretta

May 4th, 2009
by Anders Sandvall

daedalus_logo_2.jpg

Daedalus is an Italian act that perhaps isn’t well known to the great masses. I decided to change that when I heard their second album called THE NEVER ENDING ILLUSION which has the potential of becoming a ground breaking masterpiece in the bands own genre. Progressive metal is the music of Daedalus and I had the opportunity to speak with guitarist Andrea Torretta.

In recognition of 40 spooktacular years of hard rocking horror-metal, jaw dropping theatrics and a consistently over the top stage production; shock rock icon Alice Cooper was presented with a "Lifetime Achievement Award" at the 2009 Texas Frightmare Weekend convention in Dallas, Texas. Never at a loss for words, Alice conducted a brief question and answer session with attendees and well wishers who turned out to watch the legendary singer/actor/radio personality and golf enthusiast accept the award.

CONNY BLOOM & A.C CHRISTELL of Electric Boys, ex- Hanoi Rocks

May 3rd, 2009
by Marko Syrjala

ELECTRIC BOYS

CONNY BLOOM AND A.C CHRISTELL

On April 12th, 2009 the eighth sold out gig in only six days, at the legendary Tavastia Club in Helsinki, concluded the series of farewell performances by HANOI ROCKS. After putting out three albums, TWELVE SHOTS ON THE ROCKS in 2002, ANOTHER HOSTILE TAKEOVER in 2005 and STREET POETRY in 2007, since reuniting, Andy McCoy and Michael Monroe have decided to call it a day.

To coincide with the farewell tour, a book entitled "All Those Wasted Years" has been released, but since it hardly scratches the surface concerning the more recent stages of the band we decided to sit down for a chat with current guitarist Conny Bloom and bassist Andy Christell. Both also share a long history in connection with HANOI ROCKS, having already toured alongside them in the 1980’s with THE ROAD RATS [also featuring ex-HANOI ROCKS drummer, Gyp Casino]. In addition to HANOI ROCKS and THE ROAD RATS, Conny Bloom and Andy Christell have played and reaped success together in ROLENE and most importantly the, now reunited, ELECTRIC BOYS.

Tommy Victor of PRONG

Tommy Victor of PRONG

tommy-pronglogo.jpg

Interviewed by EvilG

Questions by EvilG, Lord of the Wasteland, and Aaron Yurkiewicz

Prong are one of those bands that took different elements and styles and mixed them together and offered something completely new yet crushingly heavy. Many bands copied some of what they did, but the band never became as much of a household name as they should have. We spoke to Tommy about his career, playing in Ministry and Danzig, and asked for his reflections on things like the impact Prong has made, why the band broke up and then returned, and why in 2009 Prong is still here kicking our asses!

ORANGE SKY – Nigel Rojas

April 30th, 2009
by Robert Williams

orange sky 200.jpg

Orange Sky promo1.jpg

Interview Conducted by Robert Williams

Orange Sky is a self described "Roots Rock" band hailing from  the Caribbean island of Trinidad. While Trinidad may be well known for introducing the rest of the world to the Limbo dance and Calypso music, it is certainly not known for being a Heavy Metal hotspot. Orange Sky is looking to change that. Orange Sky’s unique sound blends together elements of hard rock, heavy metal, and reggae. Yes, you read that correctly… reggae. Now before you go and ask me "Where do you find these bands?" I’d like to point out that sometimes these bands find you, such is the case with Trinidad’s loudest export who first caught my attention playing a smouldering set opening up for Yngwie Malmsteen on his "Unleash The Fury" tour.

"Dat Iz Voodoo" the second album from Orange Sky is now being supported by a Stateside jaunt with King’s X. Nigel Rojas, the upbeat guitarist and vocalist of the band dropped me a line from the road to fill us in one how everything is going.

Mithras – Lean Macey and Sam Bean

April 30th, 2009
by Arto Lehtinen

l_a478f0d2a54d6aa9c8f98f16eaf917ff.jpg

Mithras out of England have been around since 1998 and have unleashed three full length albums. The band has never really captured the limelight that much despite having great and extremely technical and high skilled death metal. Therefore it is about time to find out what’s up in the Mithras camp as the previous release BEHIND THE SHADOWS LIE MADNESS came out a few years back. Both Lean Macey and Sean Bean shed some light on what’s up at the moment and other issues.

OPERATIKA – Bill Visser

Bill Visser of OPERATIKA

Interviewed by EvilG

Interview questions by EvilG and Lord of the Wasteland

Operatika - Bill Visser

If you count yourself amongst the legion of fans who follow female-fronted bands such as Nightwish, Epica, and After Forver (RIP), then Operatika is another band you likely (or should) have in your collection. Bill Visser is the lead guitarist of the band and unlike the other bands just mentioned, his playing is much more shred/speed orientated. I spoke to Bill about Operatika and the challenges the band faces as a US band playing a style of metal much more popular in other countries.

From Hell’s Heart – The Perfect Supergroup (May 2009)

April 25th, 2009

From Hell’s Heart: May 2009

"The Perfect Supergroup"
From Hells Heart...

The topic for May is "The Perfect Supergroup." We each played god and imagined what would make a perfect supergroup. Looking at the wide range of metal styles, time periods, and skill levels, the choices and line-up possibilities are endless. To keep things consistent, here’s the guardrails we used for our selection process:

1) Musician can be either alive or living.

1) One musician per instrument, except for guitar (you can choose up to two).

2) For the musicians in your supergroup, you can choose from a particular era if you like.

Who would be in your ‘super group’?

Marcel "Schmier" Schirmer

Schmier of German thrash metal legends Destruction took some time out of his busy schedule recently to sit down on the Destruction tour bus before a San Antonio, Texas concert and talk metal. Among the topics covered include his unique perspective on touring the United States post Dimebag, the upcoming Chris Witchunter tribute concert, his recollection of the controversy regarding the band’s cover of the Exploited song "Fuck The USA" as well as meeting guitarist Mike Sifringer and the early days of Destruction.
