Jävlä Swedenrock, här kommer vi igen. The annual roadtrip to Swedenrock by the Finnish Metal‑Rules.Com team is already the tenth time in a row. The 2010 line‑up presented a wide range of metal and hard rock. Therefore, over 70 bands offered nothing but an utter blast and a helluv an experience for the attendees to enjoy metal and rock. Swedenrock has been successful during the past ten years as the festival has always been sold out. This year wasn’t any exception as the fest was sold out despite the lousy economomic situation worldwide. As mentioned in the first sentence, this is the tenth time in a row when Sweden Rock has been featured on Metal‑Rules.com, so it is quite logical for us to give a real in‑depth article of several bands performing at Sweden Rock. The weather wasn’t ideal compared to previous years. It either rained or was windy with a little sunshine. But we were there for bands, not for having some beach party. We are not able to cover every bloody band, but hopefully you will have a pleasant reading experience… Enjoy or die !!!
EVILE WINS 'METAL AS FUCK' AWARD AT METAL HAMMER GOLDEN GODS
British thrashers EVILE have been honoured with the “Metal As Fuck” award at the 2010 Metal Hammer Golden Gods.
EVILE have been making tracks since their 2007 debut album, ENTER THE GRAVE. Since then, the band has been through a lot, including the release of their critically acclaimed second album, INFECTED NATIONS, tours with the likes of MEGADETH, EXODUS, KREATOR and OVERKILL, and the tragic death of the band’s late bassist, MIKE ALEXANDER.
Through all of the ups and downs, EVILE continue to impress with their dedication and sheer passion for what they do. Winning the “Metal As Fuck” Golden God award marks another triumphant milestone in the band’s short history, and they show no sign of slowing down.
EVILE lead guitarist OL DRAKE comments:
“The other night we took a trip down to London to take part in Metal Hammer’s Kawasaki Golden Gods awards show. They’d been kind enough to ask us to play the show, which we were chuffed about. We’d also been nominated for ‘Best UK Band’. We played our set and had a great time.
“Whilst in our dressing room our manager, Julie Weir (Wiseblood Management), and a few Earache guys came in to tell us we’d won an award. We were honoured with the prestigious ‘Metal as Fuck’ award. We couldn’t feel more privileged and honoured to receive such an award, and as far as I remember it’s the only thing we’ve won (other than me winning £50 from Walkers Crisps when I was a child).
“Like Matt said, we’d like to thank everyone for this, everyone at Metal Hammer, Dig and Earache, all our fans. We’d also like to dedicate it to our late bassist, Mike Alexander, because he’s more metal than all of us put together… in a scrap yard, listening to Judas Priest, eating metal.”

18.06.10 – Clisson, France – Hellfest
31.07.10 – Knebworth, UK – Sonisphere

Black Sheep frontman Willie Basse has just uploaded his new single “Break Away”, featuring Dokken’s George Lynch on lead guitar, to www.myspace.com/williebasse. The new track features King James Kottak (Scorpions, Black Sheep) on drums, Mitch Perry (MSG, Talas, Black Sheep) on guitars, Mike Finnigan (Jimi Hendrix, Joe Cocker, CSN) on Hammond Organ and Willie Basse himself on bass and vocals.
Basse is best known for his role as bassist/frontman for legendary metalheads Black Sheep, who were mainstays on the Los Angeles Sunset Strip during the ‘80s metal explosion. The band, best known for their technical prowess and precision, has boasted members that include Slash, Paul Gilbert, James Kottak, Randy Castillo and Mitch Perry.
Basse’s is preparing for the release of the follow-up album to his critically acclaimed debut, “The Money Grind”. The album is expected to surface in early 2011 through Basse’s own New Empire Media. The album is being recorded by producer Andy Johns (Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Van Halen, Godsmack).
The Big 4: METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH and ANTHRAX
METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH and ANTHRAX — the so-called “Big Four” of 1980s thrash metal — will play together for the first time in history tonight (Wednesday, June 16) at the Sonisphere festival at Bemowo Airport in Warsaw, Poland.
The first photo of all the members of the four bands (minus SLAYER guitarist Jeff Hanneman) hanging out in a room together, apparently taken earlier today (Tuesday, June 15), can be viewed to the right.
“It’s about fucking time this happened,” says SLAYER’s Kerry King, “and about time the fans finally get what they want. This is fucking awesome.”
ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian agrees, commenting on the enormity of the announcement. “People have been talking about these four bands playing together since 1984,” he says. “That’s twenty-six years of expectation!! And the thing is, I believe not only will we live up to the expectations, we will shatter them! No other four bands as influential as the four of us have ever done this. Imagine if THE BEATLES, STONES, THE WHO and ZEPPELIN had done shows? Or SABBATH, PRIEST, MAIDEN, MOTÖRHEAD? Well, I may be getting into some rarified air here but as a fan, that’s how big I feel this is.”
These four legendary acts broke out of the underground thrash movement to dominate the metal world in the 1980s, selling millions of records and packing arenas across the globe. The metal giants have never before all shared the same stage, despite huge demand.
A second “Big Four” appearance is planned for Sonisphere Switzerland two days after the Warsaw concert, with more Sonisphere shows featuring the awesome combo to follow.
“This is a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ opportunity for heavy metal fans to see the four greatest heavy metal bands in American history back together on one stage,” concludes MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine. “If there are any heads left at the end of this festival that haven’t banged, they don’t belong there.”
The “Big Four” concert on June 22 in Sofia, Bulgaria will find its way to the U.S. via a satellite broadcast. That day’s show, as part of the Sonisphere festival, will be beamed to more than 450 movie theatres in more than 140 markets in the U.S., along with cities in Europe, Canada and Latin America.
The concert will be broadcast to theatres in high definition. Delayed screenings are planned for Australia, South Africa and New Zealand.
METALLICA’s Lars Ulrich said in a statement, “Who would have thought that more than 25 years after its inception, thrash metal’s ‘Big Four’ would not only still be around, be more popular than ever, playing shows together at stadiums all over Europe, and on top of that, coming to a movie theater near you in high definition (for better or worse??!!). Bring it on!”
RATT drummer Bobby Blotzer recently discussed “control issues” within the band during an interview with Noisecreep about his new book, Tales Of A Ratt: Things You Shouldn’t Know. An excerpt from the story is available below:
“I never know from one day to the next that this band’s going to be together because of certain people in this band. You can depend on me, I will be there for every show. I won’t pull some of the shenanigans and stuff that people do in this band.
“And it makes it hard. It makes the creative tension-wise I guess on how that frustration comes in and goes into the music and comes out sounding like kick ass Ratt music. But it’s just hard. It’s between me, Warren [DeMartini] and Stephen [Pearcy] trying to perpetuate our way of doing business. You got three chiefs and no Indians.”
In fact, when pressed on what the members of Ratt fight about the most, Blotzer provides a simple, one word answer: “Control.” Blotzer is brutally honest. His new book, Tales Of A Ratt: Things You Shouldn’t Know tells the Ratt story from beginning to today from Blotzer’s perspective. The autobiography was written by Blotzer with some help from writer friend Jim Clayton.
The writing style is conversational — as if Blotzer is talking directly to you. In fact, Blotzer dictated all his stories to Clayton in chronological order, and the two collaborated back and forth. Blotzer began working on the book in January 2008 and waited until the release of Ratt’s new album, ‘Infestation,’ to completely finish the book. He self-published the autobiography, and it began shipping in April 2010.
Like all music biographies, the book spends some time on Blotzer’s childhood, his love affair with music and his desire to be in a band. Then there are the chance meetings of future Ratt members and the rise to fame. Along the way there are hilarious stories of rock ‘n’ roll mayhem and painful realities of everyday life.
Toward the middle of the book, Blotzer addresses the ’90s when glam metal was no longer the favorite type of music and it was hard for bands like his to get work. Then there was the fact that his lead singer quit. Times were lean and bills had to be paid and Blotzer became an entrepreneur in order to keep his family afloat. Among others, Blotzer owned a steam cleaning business. While he was earning good money, Blotzer admits writing about the steam cleaning business was “painful.”
“The irony was that I still lived in my beach house,” explains Blotzer. “[I was] still getting royalties or whatever but it’s not enough. And I didn’t have any other experience in any field other than selling cars — I didn’t want to do that. And I had to do something. And that was something that I knew that I could fire up immediately. It’s definitely not a glamorous job, but it’s something that does make good money for the guys that do it.”
Ratt recently canceled their scheduled European tour, issuing the following press release:
Ratt have been forced to cancel their upcoming European tour dates. Vocalist Stephen Pearcy will be undergoing urgent hernia surgery this week. The band regrets missing the European dates on the heels of the release of their first album in 11 years, Infestation, which enjoyed a high chart debut in European territories.
Ratt shares this disappointment with all their European fans who planned to attend the shows at Sweden Rock, Sauna Open Air Festival, UK Download, Hellfest, Grasspop and Gods of Metal as well as their other dates. The band is looking into rescheduling as many of the shows as possible.
Pearcy’s doctors anticipate a full recovery in time for Ratt’s North American touring schedule, which includes a run with THE SCORPIONS, beginning in July and running through September.
Indian metal pioneers Demonic Resurrection have added another accolade to their already impressive list of achievements by winning the Global Metal award at the Metal Hammer Golden Gods 2010 in London, UK on 14th June. Metal Hammer is the one of the most prestigious heavy metal magazines in the world and the Golden Gods are their flagship awards for metal achievers across the world and are considered the most important heavy metal awards. In the past, the recipients of these awards have included bands like Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Judas Priest, Slipknot and Anthrax among others. Demonic Resurrection is the only band from India to ever have won a Golden God award, made all the more significant by the fact that they beat bands from all over the world to claim it. The complete list of winners is here:
2010 has already been an eventful year for the band who have just completed a decade-long career in heavy metal. Earlier this year, the band played the Inferno Festival in Norway, another first for an Indian band and shortly after were signed to Candlelight Records, one of the five biggest record labels for extreme metal. The band will also play the Brutal Assault Festival in August in the Czech Republic, alongside some of the biggest names in metal including Cannibal Corpse, Meshuggah, Fear Factory and Children of Bodom. The band also made an appearance in filmmaker Sam Dunn’s seminal documentary Global Metal as pioneers and forerunners of the Indian metal scene.
Dio’s contributions to heavy metal are profound and indisputable. He participated in no fewer than six of the most critically important hard rock and heavy metal albums of all time, including Rising, Long Live Rock ‘n’ Roll, Heaven And Hell, Mob Rules, Holy Diver and The Last In Line.
Ronnie James Dio lost his battle with stomach cancer on May 16th, 2010. It is one of the greatest losses ever suffered by the heavy metal community.
MANOWAR and Magic Circle Entertainment have decided to honor one of metal’s greatest legends with “Magic – A Tribute to Ronnie James Dio,” a new CD featuring Magic Circle Music artists and friends performing some of Dio’s most inspired work.
“Magic – A Tribute to Ronnie James Dio” is especially poignant because Dio hails from the same fertile upstate New York soil as MANOWAR. “Heavy metal has lost a great artist and a true gentleman,” says MANOWAR bassist Joey DeMaio. “I had the privilege of being his friend and, along with other friends and admirers, we wish to honor him.”
MANOWAR contributes a powerful rendition of Dio’s signature song, “Heaven And Hell.” Jack Starr’s Burning Starr and the Magic Circle All Star Band (with Shmoulik Avigal and Joe Stump) contribute the classics “Catch The Rainbow” and “Long Live Rock ‘n’ Roll” and his cousin and former Elf guitarist David “Rock” Feinstein delivers a song inspired and written for Dio titled “Far Beyond.” The album is rounded out by several tenacious, up-and-coming bands, such as female-fronted HolyHell, featuring the voice of Maria Breon (called by many “The Female Dio”) as well as Metalforce, Awaken and Crosswind, all of whom embrace Dio’s legacy in their own inspired interpretations of his songs on “Magic.”
In tribute to Dio’s legacy, famous fantasy painter and illustrator Ken Kelly, the man behind many of heavy metal’s most classic album covers (including some by MANOWAR) has reworked his iconic Rainbow “Rising” artwork for “Magic.”
“Magic – A Tribute to Ronnie James Dio” is from the hearts of these musicians.
It is not only their privilege, but also their duty, to honor Ronnie by singing his praises while singing his songs.
“Magic – A Tribute To Ronnie James Dio” will be released on Magic Circle Music’s online store Kingdom of Steel on June 18th, in Germany on July 16th, in the US and Canada on July 20th and further international territories in the forthcoming weeks. The album will also be available at the merchandise booth of all upcoming MANOWAR live appearances, starting at the Sonisphere Festival in Sofia, Bulgaria on June 23rd. Track Listing:
1) MANOWAR – Heaven And Hell
2) HOLYHELL – Holy Diver (Live In Norway)
3) METALFORCE – The Last In Line
4) MAGIC CIRCLE ALL STAR BAND – Long Live Rock ‘n’ Roll
5) AWAKEN – I Speed At Night
6) CROSSWIND – A Light In The Black
7) DEAN CASCIONE – Never More
8) FEINSTEIN – Far Beyond
9) HARLET – Straight Through The Heart
10) JACK STARR’S BURNING STARR – Catch The Rainbow

Australian melodic rockers LORD have released a video clip for the song “100 Reasons” which was featured on their most recent album “Set In Stone”.
Commented LORD mainmain LT, “We had a lot of fun doing this clip, throwing food around the house, trying not to get busted by mall security and doing possibly some of the most ridiculous cheesy stage moves you’ll ever see! Thankfully no one needed to wear the little gold hot pants this time, I still have nightmares about that! This is just one of a few really cool things we have on the boil this year, so keep an eye on our site.”
This video clip follows the release of LORD’s video for their cover of KYLIE MINOGUE’S “On A Night Like This” which raked up over 20,000 views in under a week.
LORD will return to Japan in October for a run of shows with DORO and JADED HEART, ahead of more Australian touring in the last part of the year.
Born from the ashes of DUNGEON, one of Australia’s longest running metal bands, LORD has gone on to tour nationally and internationally with bands such as QUEENSRYCHE, NEVERMORE, SAXON, NIGHTWISH, GAMMA RAY and more. Their last album “Set In Stone” featured guest performances by Pete Lesperance (HAREM SCAREM), Craig Goldy (DIO), Felipe Andreoli (ANGRA) and a host of other well known artists from around the world.
