Earlier this week, Anso DF of MetalSucks unveiled part one of his epic two-part interview with legendary guitarist/vocalist Kelly Shaefer of Atheist and Neurotica. Amongst other topics, Shaefer discussed Atheist’s new album, Jupiter, his lyric-writing process, locking horns with Death’s Chuck Schuldiner, drugs, the genius of James Hetfield, and how Atheist represents a “different kind of technical metal.”
An excerpt follows: At this point, it’s a matter of record that the instrumentation of Atheist is amazing, right? Adding a confrontational personality throughout the lyrics serves to elevate Atheist to an even higher plane. It’s like chocolate on ice cream. Or fresh raspberries in cereal. Better!
[laughs] You know, there was a question poised to me 20 years ago: “How is this music going to survive?” And my answer was always that people need to learn how to play their instruments. That’s probably an easy statement to make, but it was something I felt really strongly about. In order for extreme metal to make it as a valid genre of music that would have classic qualities to it 20 years later, it’d have to up the level of musicianship. And that’s exactly what happened. And 20 years ago, I didn’t think we’d make it here and people would still be talking about this music now.
You can see that in the early career of Chuck Schuldiner [of Death] — very basic, very simple, with more of a shock factor than instrumentalism. As the story is told, Death gets a lot of credit for being one of the bands that broke into technical metal. Purists and people who were there back in the day know that that’s not necessarily true. I give him all the credit in the world; Chuck is the godfather of Death Metal, without a doubt. So in order for the genre to survive this far, if anybody needed to turn and introduce more musicianship into their band, it was Death. They had so much influence on all the young bands coming up. So by Chuck recognizing that musicianship would be key, it became easier for fans to accept bands like Atheist. I love Chuck for that. I love the fact that he finally got it. But if you look back at the old magazines, he was not a fan of Atheist at all. We had many, many verbal confrontations at Morrisound Studios and through magazines. His argument was always that jazz has no place in metal. “Those guys [in Atheist] don’t even listen to metal,” he used to say.
Really? Is that true?
Oh my god, yeah! He says all that then gets Paul Masvidal and Sean Reinert [both of Cynic] in his band. So his opinion changed. That’s okay. I don’t chain him to that in any way. He was smart enough to recognize it. He never admitted that he was wrong, but the music admitted he was wrong, from Human on. He knew to go get the best musicians. That was most important — not the guy with the most evil hair, or the biggest upside cross, or the guy who watches the most horror movies. He fucking got Gene Hoglan, Paul Masvidal, Steve DiGiorgio, Sean Reinert … all these guys who could play their asses off. So I tip my hat to him for that.

X Japan - Left to Right: Sugizo, Toshi, Yoshiki, Heath, Pata
X Japan, the biggest rock band in Japan, wrapped up its first-ever North American tour last weekend with an SRO show at New York’s Roseland Ballroom. Over the course of the seven dates, all played at theatre-sized venues, X Japan easily demonstrated why they’ve sold 30-million units and filled the 55,000-seat Tokyo Dome a whopping 18 times. X Japan hadn’t played venues this small in more than 20 years, so they tailored their “stadium-sensibility production” to the theaters, bringing in everything from lasers to pyrotechnics to CO2 to a jumbo screen.
If you missed seeing the band this time, they will be back, as 2011 will see a full-on North American tour as well as the release of X Japan’s debut album – with lyrics in English.
Read what some of the press had to say about X Japan’s North American tour, below…
L.A. Weekly: “X Japan is a stadium band…as such, they treated The Wiltern as though it were Dodger Stadium.”
Time Out Chicago: “X Japan is a master of epic metal on the other side of the world. [Vocalist] Toshi screams right up there with the banshee hell ranks of Al Atkins and Bruce Dickinson. Yoshiki is his classically trained pianist and warrior drummer. And together, with the help of a trio of guitarists, X Japan possesses a call-and-response fury infused with operatic mayhem.”
Examiner New York: ” X Japan put on an arena-quality show.”
“All it took was one show to make it very clear why X Japan is such a phenomenon in its homeland. Many rock bands have lost the drama and theatrics that was the hallmark of the rock concert. Clearly X Japan gets it.”
“X Japan is bringing spectacle and excitement back to music – and the band proved it is a force to be reckoned with.”
Rockstar Weekly: “Toshi, much like Freddie Mercury or even Geoff Tate of Queenscryche, is one of the most amazing singers you’ll ever get to hear live.”
“The most impressive aspect of X Japan’s show is the quality of musicianship. Principal songwriter, drummer and pianist Yoshiki’s classical training came gushing out when he took a seat at the clear-case grand piano for the power ballad “Endless Rain…guitarists Sugizo and Pata traded grinding riffs and lightning leads on songs such as “I.V.” and “Jade” that even American metal bands would find hard to tackle.”
Metromix New York:
“Everything about X Japan is massive. What other rock show nowadays features lasers, violin solos (of “The Star Spangled Banner,” no less), a cavalcade of power chords, and drum solos?”
Consequence of Sound: “Fans like this hardly exist anymore – at least in rock ‘n’ roll. People preoccupy themselves so much with what’s hip these days that they lose sight on why they listened to music in the first place.”
Lithium: “As energetic as the fans were, I felt the band was the obvious winner in the ‘who is having more fun’ category, a point driven home as they all posed for multiple photos FOR THEMSELVES at the end of their performance on the front of the stage with the Massey Hall crowd in the background.”
AOL/Noisecreep: “The X Japan live experience is meant to be seen in the space of a sports arena, but just after a couple of minutes, you felt like you were watching them a few miles away — at the Los Angeles Staples Center.”

David Lee Roth, lead singer of VAN HALEN, used to be known as the only musical one in the Roth family. His sister, Lisa Roth, never really considered herself musically inclined. Ballet was as musical as shot got, until about three years ago.
She was shopping for a baby gift, and couldn’t find anything she thought would be the perfect gift for her friend. She thought, “What if there was a gift that would benefit the parents and the child?”
“But most of the lullabyes out there, I wouldn’t think parents could relate to or enjoy hearing them over and over again. But their favorites songs, I figured they would.”
So, she approached her boss at CMH Records David Haerle about creating lullabyes based on a parent’s favorite singers and bands. Rock-A-Bye Baby features recognizable music from nearly 30 artists, from METALLICA to THE ROLLING STONES.
Roth adds, “When I knew I’d really hit something right was when I saw an interview of Kirk Hammett of Metallica talking about playing it for his child, and he said that it works.”

Riot Entertainment is extremely proud to announce distribution deals with Victory Records & Peaceville Records for the Australian market.
John Howarth CEO of Riot says
“Riot and I are totally honoured to be working with Victory and Peaceville. I have chased these labels for a long time and so we are extremely excited to be working with both labels. Tony Brummel and I are also huge wrestling fans so that is a bonus. I have known Tony for a long time; he is an innovator in the industry and I am looking forward to working with him and learning from him, too. With a stack of killer new releases such as A Day To Remember, Ill Nino, Comeback Kid, Hawthorne Heights and more, this is a great time for Victory and Riot to start doing business toether.”
“Peaceville is also a label I have always been keen on and they have really been at the forefront of the darker side of the metal scene with bands like My Dying Bride, Katatonia, Paradise Lost, Opeth, Darkthrone and more. Now with Cradle of Filth on board, the sky is the limit. It is a really strong catalogue and a lot of their bands have really loyal followings here. The vibe on the new Cradle of Filth is really strong and they have some other really impressive titles due for release.”
Victory and Peaceville join a stable of other labels at Riot that includes Nuclear Blast, Metal Blade, Season of Mist, Relapse, Edel, Good Fight, Earache and more.
“There have been so many changes and massive upheaval in the industry here that we have to continue to build and consolidate, and becoming a home to these key labels is something that retail have been demanding. Housing all the key product under the one roof is really helping all the labels as a lot of great product is all feeding off each other.
We have so many bands from the Riot Roster touring here between now and early 2011 such as Soilwork, Katatonia, A Day To Remember, Gwar, Dimmu Borgir, Fozzy, Kylesa, Silverstein, Smashing Pumpkins, Bayside, Ill Nino, Saxon and plenty more. We are also building a profile here for Rise To Remain who are playing Soundwave 2011. We really want to bring this amazing band to the fans here.”
Riot will also announce next week the signing of a seminal Australian Metal Band returning to the scene.Howarth says “I sat and listened to the final product and it is possibly the best Australian metal recording I have heard.”
At the beginning of 2010 Riot set up an elite distribution deal with Warner Music Australia and more recently with New Zealand for its licensed and key label titles. These include the latest releases from Dillinger Escape Plan, Black Label Society, Hellyeah, Filter, John 5, JP, Chrissie & the Fairground Boys, Pearl, As I Lay Dying, Lostboy! AKA Jim Kerr, Dimmu Borgir, Kamelot and others through the Warner system, several of which have had strong chart success.
“Warner have been great.” commented Howarth “They are also going to support us with key overseas signings and albums that we bring to the table, so if there are any international bands looking at doing deals for Australia, just reach out to us!”
NEW ALBUM “BLOODY PIT OF HORROR” IN STORES NOVEMBER 9th ON METAL BLADE RECORDS
The two year 25th Anniversary Slay-A-Bration is showing no signs of slowing down, as your lords and masters GWAR are set to receive yet another accolade glossing their infinite greatness, this time in the form of a stunning endorsement from the academic community. GWAR is finally being recognized by The Ivy League colleges, and is now set to receive the prestigious honor of being one of a select few to be inducted into The Harvard Lampoon.
The Harvard Lampoon is America’s oldest institution of humor, operating from the Harvard campus since 1876, and boasting an elite cadre of members that include the likes of Conan O’Brian and BJ Novak, as well as many of America’s top comedy writers and performers. The ceremony will take place this Saturday October 16th at the world-famous Harvard Lampoon Castle in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
The Lampoon put out an official statement on GWAR’s induction:
“In honor of their prodigious achievements of slaughter, brutality, conquer, mayhem, and madness, The Harvard Lampoon is delighted to present GWAR with the award of “Most Terrible, Vile, Disgusting, Disturbed, yet Revoltingly Awesome Band Ever.” On October 16th the band will travel to Cambridge, Massachusetts to visit the Castle and celebrate in a private induction ceremony, banquet, and live human sacrifice in their honor.”
When reached for a comment on this prestigious honor Oderus briefly laid down his crack pipe and muttered:
“Me and the guys are as pleased as pig-shit to accept this near-meaningless accolade from a bunch of booze-sodden degenerates. To walk in the shoes that tread in the footsteps that tied the shoelaces that were Elijah Wood’s big ass hairy hobbit feet fills me with a feeling not unlike lust but nothing like nausea. To mumble the words that were the drool that became the Jell-o that fell out of Bill Cosby’s butt is the third most important thing to happen to me today. And finally, to lap at the glistening shores that is the toilet that Sarah Silverman left a dookie in is akin to having sex with Jesus’s wife. We are honored, pleased, and gassy as hell as we accept this mantle-crushing award and the considerable attached cash prize…there is a cash prize, right?”

When not making heads bang nightly, BONDED BY BLOOD have been detailing all of their tour experiences on a tour blog exclusively at SkullsNBones.com. In their latest installment, the band details 3 Texas shows that saw the band playing video games in their van, having meetings with BBQ ribs and playing surprise festivals:
“Today was a bit of a shocker! We played at the Ridglea Theater in Ft. Worth Texas with Cattle Decapitation and Devourment. What happened was that two tours combined into one big ass gig. There was 11 bands total that played I believe, it was a huge package – “that’s what she said”
We played a shorter set than usual due to the obvious time constraints of having so many bands packed into one bill but it was pretty cool. This was most definitely not our crowd and at moments I felt lost in a crowd full of kids decorated in large ear piercings, tattoos, and colorful band t shirts or whom I’ve never heard of before. We went on 6th and the previous bands were all death core bands so we knew we were going to sound completely out of place, we didn’t give two shits tho and went up there and did our thing. I am happy to say that up to that point we were the first band to get the crowd moving. We had a few fans in the crowd and they started the pit for us, thank you!”
