Acclaimed guitarist Ron Jarzombek (BLOTTED SCIENCE, WATCHTOWER, SPASTIC INK) has issued the following update:
“Basically, what is going on is I have too many things going on right now, and haven’t completed much of anything since the BLOTTED SCIENCE The Machinations Of Dementia CD in late ’07. (Well, I released ‘PHHHP! Plus’ last year but that was previously recorded material). This is what I get for starting up too many things, trying to run everything myself, handling nearly all production work, and I get so overloaded that I lose focus on what I should be working on, what is priority at the time, and nothing gets completed. Hopefully, one of the projects listed below will actually be completed sometime soon, but don’t hold your breath or you will die’
1. Instructional DVDs
I have not touched the DVD material since I posted the Oscillation Cycles video over a year ago. I had so many people asking what the DVDs would be like, so I completed that segment and posted it just to give fans a glimpse of what I’m putting together, but knew that after that I would be getting back with Watchtower in hopes of finishing up Mathematics. There will be three instructional DVDs, the 1st based on common scale use and abuse, the 2nd on timing, and the 3rd on 12 tone uses. I’ve got tons of work done on all three DVDs, but am far from being completed on any of them. They will be completed and released when they are done. How’s that? Believe me folks, I really want to get back to my DVDs, but I usually put bands/projects first when other band/project members are cooperating’
Seems like whenever we try to complete Mathematics, we hit a snag, roadblock, or wall. We’ve reworked the material for the third time now (2000, 2004, and now 2010), and I’m just tired of talking about it. It’s really getting old. You guy can keep asking me, but the answer will be the same… I really don’t know when the CD will be done. I really don’t. We need to get the damn thing done sometime, somehow, some way. But we have over an hour of good material sitting around waiting to be recorded and released. If we can just get this vocalist situation worked out, we should be fine. In April ’10 we digitally released ‘The Size Of Matter’ and played the Keep It True Festival in Germany and I thought at that point we would for sure get back on track and get the recordings done (just like I did in 2000 and 2004). So we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
3. Blotted Science EP and new drummer!
When we got together for the Tampa rehearsals in mid ’08, we began talking about plans for a second Blotted Science CD and came up with a wacky concept. Let’s just say there were lots of crazy and interesting ideas floating around. The ‘Laser Lobotomy’ and ‘Oscillation Cycles’ rehearsal videos were posted and talks of gigging were in the air, but nothing materialized. No writing for the second CD really happened after that. Alex continued working heavily with CANNIBAL CORPSE, Charlie with BEHOLD THE ARCTOPUS, and I was working on the DVDs/Watchtower. We just kept in contact and were thinking of how we could pull off this ‘concept’. After a year and a half of focusing on WatchTower, and it coming to a grinding halt, I REALLY wanted to get moving on something. I was getting hounded by fans about a second Blotted Science CD, so I began putting things together for Blotted Science II. Realizing that a full CD would take too long to complete, we decided that an EP would be our best and most realistic move at this point. Alex is heavily involved with Cannibal Corpse and our new drummer Hannes Grossman is writing/recording/touring with OBSCURA. New drummer?! What?!! Yes, folks, please welcome Hannes to Blotted Science! Those of you in the death metal world should be very familiar with his work with NECROPHAGIST and Obscura. Of course Alex and I wish Charlie the very best with his current bands/projects/sessions, and many thanks for doing an absolute brilliant job on Machinations.
The EP will consists of 4 songs totalling 22 minutes (3 of which are already already written), and will be hopefully released in early ’11. But again, but don’t hold your breath.
4. ‘Duodecimal Levorotation’
While Watchtower was in Germany playing the KIT Festival, we stayed over a few days and I got to hang out a bit with Hannes and Chris from Obscura. Chris and I soon starting talking about music theory, 12 tone uses, and thought that it would be cool for us to put something, maybe just a song or two, and have it available digitally. To fill out the recording lineup we fired up Hannes, and I asked my SPASTIC INK bandmate bassist Pete Perez if he was interested, so we all pitched in with a few tunes each, and came up with a 6 ‘ minute song. We haven’t come up with a name for the project yet, but the name of the song will be ‘Duodecimal Levorotation’.
5. EXIT STAGE LEFT
My local RUSH tribute band Exit Stage Left is at it again. We will be playing in the San Antonio area at Clicks (I410 and EVers), the Broadway 5050 Colonnade, and at Hooligan’s in a few weeks. Come out and have a brew while I kill my guitar on ‘Bytor’. Our first gig back is Nov. 6.
6. Ray Riendeau
Congrats to RAY RIENDEAU for completing his fifth solo CD Atmospheres. Ray played on the song Words For Nerds on Spastik Ink’s second CD Ink Compatible. And so my playing on the song ‘A Search For Life Forms’ from ‘Atmospheres’ completes our ‘trade’. Many thanks Ray, a freaking killer CD!
7. Online lessons
I have received quite a few inquiries about online gtr lessons. Right now I am only doing private live-in-person lessons 5 days a week at 3 locations in San Antonio, but am thinking about getting into online lessons. If/when this happens, I will post any info on all of my sites.

In the final installment of their track-by-track series, bassist/vocalist Grutle Kjellson and rhythm guitarist/songwriter Ivar Bjørnson of the progressive/psychedelic Norwegian black metal band ENSLAVED offer commentary on the final song that will appear on the band’s new album Axioma Ethica Odini, which is scheduled for release in Europe on September 27th and in North America tomorrow (September 28th).
Grutle on “Lightening”:
“This the last song Ivar came up with, and also the last one I did the lyrics for on this album. Another ‘love at first sight’ story for me; I enjoyed it straight away and had a really good time working on it. I really have to mention [lead guitarist] Ice [Dale]’s huge impact on this song, too. He really does some magic here and the beginning of the song had been remarkably different without his genius! I remember that I wrote the lyrics while listening to the pre-production on repeat, and the words just came out instantly. It was just like the words were already there and I was merely a medium… strange but cool. I won’t say too much about the lyrics other than they describe certain forces inside you, written in mythological metaphors. The title should provide a pretty good hint. Enjoy!”
Ivar on “Lightening”:
“[Keyboard player and clean vocalist] Herbrand was a little bit concerned with the opening riffs on this song, as they seem to skip a lot between scales, bars, and time signatures. Then he and Ice Dale sat down to work out a collaboration between the lead guitar and the clean vocals. And WHAT a result! I dare say this is Herbrand’s most impressing vocal efforts to date, and it shows that Ice Dale is a guitar legend in the sense that he can feel the notes, not only shred them. Then Grutle takes over in the second part of the song, again showcasing very impressive timing and his best aggressive vocals so far in my ears. These lyrics by Grutle definitely gives off a sense of lightening, of brightening up – but to me it is more the bright light of an explosion than any kind of meek light of forgiveness. A perfect end to the album.”

Reactivated San Francisco Bay Area thrashers FORBIDDEN have uploaded the track “Forsaken At The Gates” to their official MySpace page.
“’Forsaken At The Gates’ is FORBIDDEN‘s new thrash anthem for the 2010’s and beyond,” commented guitarist CraigLocicero. “If we could go back in a time machine to when we called it a day in 1997, there still would have been no way that we could have written ‘Forsaken…” back then. We needed the distance and hind-site to write this record and had to get a grip on what the hell FORBIDDEN was all about when we started. Our vision is clear. We are a Thrash Metal band! ‘Forsaken At The Gates’ says it all.
If I were to compare ‘Forsaken At The Gates’ to any of our old songs, it would be ‘March Into Fire’, which was one of the first songs that I’d ever written in my life. Ironically, ‘Forsaken…’ was the last song we’d written for Omega Wave. Funny how things work.
As far as the song itself, Mark was a fucking beast when we tracked it! I knew we had a monster on the first take, great energy and sense of urgency in his performance. It made one hell of a spine to connect all of the other moving parts to. Everyone blasted through their tracks with the same sense of urgency too. Playing those riffs, my blood pumps harder then in any other song I’ve played on. It was an intense session to track and Matt cruises through the entire thing like a bulldozer! The solo section brings me back to the good ‘ol days when trade-offs were all over the classic metal records we all love. I really love playing and writing with Steve, he makes me so much better and I think we make a great team.
After that, it’s Russ that’s next fucking level! Tim and I got him fired up and locked him behind the glass until he sounded as crazed as they lyrics are intended to convey. The song itself is about turning away the masses from the numerous underground shelters around the planet that will try to seek protection from any natural or unnatural disaster that would effect all of us on the surface.
The main line of the song says ‘Corpses laid out for the Rapture, New World Order buried in it’s tomb.’ In other words, if the surface isn’t worth living on and the powers that be decide who lives in a canned air bunker for future generations to come…let them rot down there, that’s not a world worth living in!”
Vocalist Russ Anderson added:
“Looking back on recording our first album Forbidden Evil and recording Omega Wave, there really is no comparison. During the recording of Forbidden Evil, we were in a time crunch and I sang the whole album in about one and a half days, impossible some could say, but true. I was happy with the results because that gave the album it’s rawness, that in my opinion goes down in history as true as a thrash album gets.
Omega Wave was a slower recording process. I worked with Craig and Tim as my right hand men and they know me. At times I think they were trying to ‘slap me around’ a little before the heavy songs like ‘Forsaken At The Gates’ to get me to approach the song with true aggression. You really should not be feeling love and flowers approaching a song like this, not to say that was what I was thinking, but it helps to bring out the aggression of the song through the vocals. ’Forsaken At The Gates’ was easier for me than some of the others, only because it was the last song I recorded and was done in one session.
By the time I was on the last of the songs I had a lot of fire to breathe and did not want to stop. ‘I love to record!’ As far as my voice being deeper or better, I don’t know, I tried to compliment each song and be one with it, and to do that, you must be one with your voice. That is something I have strived for over the years and hope it comes across.
I think that vocals can change or get better over time, like a fine wine, for instance if you listen back to James Hetfield when he did Kill ‘Em All he most defiantly has a more adolescent voice than, on say …And Justice For All. Vocals are touchy things and definitely unpredictable from day to day . The only way I have found to have any control over it is to approach every song with its intended emotion which is also the key to a good performance no matter how your voice is holding up that day. Point being, it’s a human instrument that mirrors the soul .
I truly gave it my all on Omega Wave and I hope everyone will enjoy it as much as I enjoyed recording it . Hope to see you all on our United States tour that kicks off on the East Coast November 4th, ending on the West Coast on December 11th, 2010.

As reported by to Radio Bulgaria: The rock legend Ronnie James Dio will have a monument dedicated to him in the Bulgarian Black-sea coastal town of Kavarna. The decision to erect this monument was taken by the municipal administration, with the most active proponents being Kavarna Mayor Tsonko Tsonkov as well as leading journalists, musicians and singers. The monument is to be built in the town park and will mark the creation of the so-called Walk of Rock. The model of the monument is ready and was displayed during the three-day Kavarna Rock Fest last week. Ronnie James Dio died on May 16 this year. In the past few years, he came to Bulgaria five times to give concerts and took an active part in the campaign for liberating the Bulgarian nurses held in prison in Libya for eight years.
According to Standart News, the mayor of Kavarna, Tzonko Tzonev, has managed to turn his life-long hobby — rock music — into a successful and profitable project and thus pours funds into the treasury of Kavarna Municipality. Thanks to Tzonev’s efforts, some of the greatest rock musicians of all time have come and performed in the small coastal town of Kavarna.

Ozzy Osbourne dedicated the song “Road To Nowhere” to his “old friend” Ronnie James Dio during Ozzy‘s September 22, 2010 concert at the Palasharp Arena in Milan, Italy.
“I’d like to dedicate this to my old friend Ronnie James Dio,” Osbourne said from the stage. “God bless you, man. It’s a song called ‘Road To Nowhere’. I love you, Ronnie.”

Ozzy Osbourne told QMI Agency in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on in May that Ronnie James Dio‘s ultimately fatal battle with stomach cancer hit close to home.
“As soon as I heard I heard he had been diagnosed with cancer, I sent him some encouragement,” Osbourne said. “Having been through that situation myself with (my wife) Sharon when we were doing (the reality TV show) ‘The Osbournes’, it’s always somebody over there. When it lands at your doorstep you’re like, ‘What do you do? How do you get round this?’ When Sharon got (colon) cancer, I’d never known anyone who survived. I thought it was bullshit when they told you, ‘They can survive.’ I just thought they were trying to smooth me over. And she got over it.”
Osbourne added that he ran into BLACK SABBATH/HEAVEN & HELL drummer Vinny Appice at the Revolver Golden Gods Awards show in early April and inquired about Dio‘s health.
“I didn’t get a chance to see him but I was talking to the drummer Vinny, and I said, ‘Did he get my message?’ ‘I don’t know,’ he said.’ And I said, ‘Well, tell him to keep up the fight.’ Then on the weekend, we heard he had passed away, which is sad. He had a great voice. People thought that me and him were at war. At first, I suppose a bit of theatrics would be involved, but I mean it’s been 30 years.”
The deaths of Dio and SLIPKNOT bassist Paul Gray are the latest that have stunned the heavy rock world in the last few months. AVENGED SEVENFOLD drummer James “The Rev” Sullivan died last December, while TYPE O NEGATIVE frontman Peter Steele passed away in April.
Ozzy, who knew or had a passing acquaintance with all four artists, told The Pulse of Radio it’s sad to see so many musicians pass away in such a short period of time. “I mean, of late everyone’s dropping dead,” he said. “This happens every so often, you know. I’m only hoping my number don’t come up soon. It’s what happens, you know. You hear me talking, I’m lucky I’m not one of the dead ones, ’cause I used to — I mean, Ronnie James Dio didn’t have any problems, but when there’s drugs involved or alcohol…I should have died a thousand times.”
The Argentinian band AZEROTH will release its third studio album “Historias y Leyendas” – “Stories and Legends” on July 20th. This album has been recorded at the Virtual Studios in Buenos Aires (Argentina) and it presents a new formation: Fernando Ricciardulli (founder member and composer of the band) on the bass, the participation of Christian Bertoncelli (Renacer, Imperio) as vocalist, and the new members: Mario Dorantes on the guitar, Angel Montagner also playing the guitar, Alfredo Mondragón on the drums and Luigi Mondragón on the keyboards.
The new CD, totally produced and composed by Fernando Ricciardulli, has been mixed and masterized by Emiliano Obregon of Virtual Studios. The cover was designed by the Swedish artist Rudolf Hergzog. “I think that the work done by Rudolf is amazing. At last we could have total control when taking decisions, and I believe that collaborating with this great Swedish artist has been a wise choice.”
“Historias y Leyendas” will be available in digital format on July 20th by Duskwood Records. In Argentina , it will be released already in CD format by Hurling Metal Records on August, and its release in Mexico , Spain and Japan (among others) is being discussed.
Besides, AZEROTH has recorded a promotional video clip (an unprecedented fact for the band until now) of the song “La promesa” – “The promise”.

OCEANO vocalist, Adam Warren lent his formidable talents to Utah’s CHELSEA GRIN during their recent Canadian tour. Warren stepped in for CHELSEA GRIN vocalist Alex Koehler, who was recovering from a jaw fracture. Just after coming back home, Adam gave a statement that describes his excitement over his stint fronting for CHELSEA GRIN and beyond:
“The Grin tour went awesome. It was really fun to get to experience all the Canada has to offer. Even IF it involves paying bigger prices. Everyone (Blind Witness,Chelsea grin, Attila) were all cool and it was just like picking up on a tour that I had already started. It was a good way FOR ME at least to establish some good friendships with CG and Attila as well considering Oceano will be hitting the road with them very soon. So I’m sure there will more partying to ensue when that rolls around.”

Canada’s tech-death metal magicians DIVINITY are set to embark on their latest in-country tour offensive this week, which is being dubbed the The Singulari-tour 2010, in support of their latest full-length The Singularity. Beginning this Saturday at the Noctis IV Metalfest and Conference — in DIVINITY’s hometown of Calgary, Alberta — DIVINITY will rage the stage alongside Sodom, Ex Deo, The Devil’s Blood and countless more at the festival before hitting the road for the first half of October. They’ll tear their way through the country appearing alongside Beneath The Massacre, Goatwhore, The Black Dahlia Murder and more over the two-week assault, ending the festivities at the Metalfest 10 at Trois-Rivieres alongside Misery Index, Despised Icon and more on October 15th.

Powerhouse American vocalist Tim “Ripper” Owens (YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, BEYOND FEAR, ex-JUDAS PRIEST, ICED EARTH) joined German power metallers PRIMAL FEAR on stage on September 18, 2010 at Progresja in Warsaw, Poland to perform the JUDAS PRIEST classic “Metal Gods”.

“Play My Game”, the first solo album from Owens, landed at position No. 66 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200. The CD was released via SPV/Steamhammer. The offering consists of around a dozen brand-new tracks that Owens composed himself or together with renowned friends, such as Bob Kulick, Chris Caffery (SAVATAGE, TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA), Mike Callahan (ex-EARSHOT) and John Comprix (BEYOND FEAR, RINGWORM).
PRIMAL FEAR recently released a new live DVD, “16.6 – All Over The World” (recorded in various locations between September and November 2009), and a live CD, aptly titled “Live In The USA”. Frontiers Records issued the two products separately and as a limited-edition combo on June 22 in the USA. The DVD is filled with an abundance of extra materials, such as an entire bootleg section with funny moments on the road, bootleg footage from various festival appearances and other concerts, all of PRIMAL FEAR’s most recent promotional videos, plus the making-of footage for “16.6” and a brand new interview section about the past, present and future of PRIMAL FEAR.
