Announcing the launch of Indie Label Metal Mantra Records

February 6th, 2011
by EvilG
Metal Mantra Records

Metal Mantra Records

Heavy Metal enthusiasts had a prayer answered recently with the launching of Indie Label Metal Mantra Records, LLC, based in Bucks County.

This upstart record label is catering to the genre that is responsible for  many others, most of which thrive today, all around the world. With strict focus on what they call ‘Pure Metal’, Metal Mantra Records is reigniting  a flame that has been fading in the local scene, for some time.

While the grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of Heavy Metal flourish, their forefathers, having earned an eternal place in the World of Metal, are scaling back on touring, recording, likely in preparation for them enjoy their Golden Years,  which they richly deserve.  With only a modicum of bands from the local or underground scenes who exhibit that classic style and sound, the ‘Pure’ Metal genre risks extinction. As the waves of ‘modern metal’ such as Black, Core, Death, Screamo, etc., and all that spawns from them, are breaking on the shores of listeners, the foundation from which they are rooted has had few additions to its structure.

Bands like Slipknot, approaching their 3rd decade have Disturbed, and Korn following in their footsteps. The sounds of Morbid Angel  already in their 3rd decade, will live on through the efforts of  Autopsy, and God Dethroned. In countries around the Globe, the mid-range guitars and ‘tin’ sounding drums of Black Metal is as prevalent as the breeze, and show no signs of fading. Multi-faceted bands such as Dimmu Borgir, Children Of Bodom, Avenged Sevenfold, and female fronted performers such as The Agonist, Holy Moses, Straight Line Stitch, Arch Enemy, and the like, demonstrate an ever-popular blending of styles and sounds, that are becoming as standard, as they were recently unique.

Meanwhile those who have stood the test of time, forge ahead like the Champions they are. Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Slayer, Overkill, Ozzy, and Motorhead watch as their partners fade; King Diamond/Mercyful Fate, Scorpions, Ritchie Blackmore, and  Twisted Sister,  or pass on completely; Dio, Schudiner, Steele, Chris Dudek ,Phil Kennemore. Glimmers of hope appear with the return of Megadeth, Accept, Manowar, and Kreator. Though these well respected, tireless, pioneers of all things Metal press onward, who is waiting in the wings? Who will carry the flag, and defend the faith once Father Time has deemed it necessary to retire the Metal Elite?

With the launching of Metal Mantra Records comes a commitment to provide, even on a local, ‘underground’ scale, an opportunity for bands with a traditional Metal sound to be heard.  Info taken from the company Bio states, “ METAL MANTRA RECORDS is focused on ‘Pure’ HEAVY METAL and it’s immediate sub-genres*, is personally funded by the owners, and believe that the majority of earnings attributed to a creative piece, should be paid to the Artist(s). As such, METAL MANTRA RECORDS offers to work with METAL Artists after close scrutiny of their operational processes…….Decades of experience, trial and error has produced a fresh and innovative approach to the business. Gone are the days of Artists signing away rights and royalties of their creations, or having to pay out of pocket for sub-par production.”

The up-and-coming Label defines ‘Pure Metal and it’s immediate sub-genres’ as: Classic, Progressive, Power, Speed, Thrash, and Doom Metal, and emphatically state they, “openly support all forms of METAL, and music in general.”, choosing to direct their energy, helping to re-build ‘Pure’ Metal, beginning on a local level.

Metal Mantra Records is currently involved in active negotiations with companies on several Continents, in an effort to secure distribution deals so the sound of ‘Pure’ Metal once again reaches Metal listeners, World Wide. A spokesperson for the label said, “We’re on a conference call this Friday(2/4) with a German Record Company, and are confident we’ll be announcing that we’ve reached an agreement with them, soon after.” One thing is certain; After this is achieved, once again the Flag of Heavy Metal will fly high for all to see.

2010 was a volatile year for San Diego’s Pathology. While it saw the band releasing their Victory Records debut, Legacy of the Ancients and doing three tours alongside Nile, Immolation/Vader and Destroyer 666, the group was plagued by a rotation of fill-in singers and ultimately a horrible van accident that derailed the band from continuing.

Since that tragic event November 10th, the guys have been putting things back in order. In addition to a new van, trailer and gear, Pathology has also enlisted a new full-time vocalist to replace original voice Matti Way, who was unable to tour with the band. Jonathan Huber, formerly of I Declare War, has taken over duties as front-man for Pathology. In addition to his stellar vocal capabilities, Jonathan proved to have the right attitude and presence that won him the spot.

“I’m very honored and feel very privileged to now be a part of the Pathology family,” stated Jonathan. “After being a fan of theirs for three years, being in the band is pretty surreal. I look forward to touring and recording with the band, and thank them for this opportunity.”

In addition, the band has welcomed back guitarist Tim Tiszczenko, who stepped down mid-way through the touring cycle. Tim joins his replacement guitarist Kevin Schwartz for a dual-guitar assault. Both guitar players have also been writing new material in the downtime, bringing a whole new level of intensity to the band.

Drummer Dave Astor has this to say, “I am happy to have Tim back in the band. He is a big part of the Pathology sound. He’s had time to reconsider and is fully committed now. It’s the right thing. I’m excited to be working with him again.”

Fans can see the new lineup beginning mid-month as they will open for DEICIDE and BELPHEGOR (tour dates below).

“I’m very excited to get back on the road,” responded Dave. “We have been working hard to get things back in working order after our car wreck and I am thrilled to be playing again and am looking forward to showing the fans the new lineup.  I have always been a big fan of Deicide. I remember seeing and meeting them in 1992 on Halloween here in San Diego. So to be touring with them 19 years later is very cool! We play very early on this tour so make sure to get there and catch our set.”

MONSTERWORKS: Image is Nothing; Metal is Everything

February 6th, 2011
by EvilG

The entity known as Monsterworks began as a death metal organism (metallicum necronominominom) spawned in a primordial swamp and went on to evolve into the sophisticated supermetal machine (uber-ferrous tonka) it is today in the fleeting span of 3.5 billion years. This incubation period has resulted in a genus that communicates through an intriguing musical blend borrowing from the best of proto-thrash, death and traditional metal.

Consisting of Hugo (bass), James (drums), Marcus (lead guitar) and Jon (guitar/vocals), Monsterworks has thrown all its collective experience into a new and ambitious slab of granite joy: The God Album; a philosophical journey navigating the woes of religion and its implications for the modern world. Monsterworks has been described as “thinking man’s metal”, a label to be proud of insofar as one can distinguish the message among the roaring and screaming that characterizes its sound.

Vocalist Jon (also vocalist/lyricist for Chicago based metal band The Living Fields) says “since the release of our heavy metal space adventure concept albums: Spacial Operations and Singularity, I was intrigued with the idea of ‘themed’ records rather than straight narrative stories. This new album has something to say from a few different angles and I hope it will reinforce the importance of critical thinking and the dangers of blind faith. We live in an age of great technological achievement, yet a significant part of the populations of supposedly modern industrialised nations believe that the Earth is six thousand years old. There is something profoundly bizarre about that. It is worth having a cup of tea or a few beers and pondering whilst listening to The God Album.”

Monsterworks has been compared with Strapping Young Lad, 3 Inches of Blood, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Death Angel.

Everything You Believe is a Lie

The Enemy of My Enemy

Let It Go

(Hymn of) Fire

The God Album is released through Casket Music on 28 February 2011 (UK) and 8 March 2011 (USA), distributed by PHD worldwide.

Following the release of their sophomore album Powerkiller, Canadian heavy metal heroes EVIL SURVIVES strike back with another entry in the HEAVY ARTILLERY RECORDS discography with a reissue of their debut Metal Vengeance. Available for the first time ever on CD and digital formats, Metal Vengeance was originally released by renowned Canadian vinyl-only metal label War On Music. Metal Vengeance will be re-released world wide on March 22nd 2011.

Based out Winnipeg, Manitoba EVIL SURVIVES first began spreading their metallic mayhem when the in the summer of 2006 Front man Karl “Axe n’ Smash” Warkentin and guitarist Adrian Riff began the arduous task of recruiting like minded metal heads. Finally after three months the search was complete and EVIL SURVIVES was born. By June 2008 EVIL SURVIVES made its first performance- by no coincidence…but fate! – outside of an Iron Maiden concert in their home town of Winnipeg.  Less than a month later, EVIL SURVIVES entered the studio to record their debut full length album Metal Vengeance released exclusively on vinyl on War on Music.

On the heels of a growing renown, EVIL SURVIVES were right back in studio by the end of 2009 to record their second full length album, entitled Powerkiller, released by War on Music on vinyl and limited edition cassette. Mixed entirely in analog, the master reels contained over 40 minutes of driving NWOBHM worship, sounding like 1985-2009 never even happened.  Powerkiller caught the attention of New York metal merchants HEAVY ARTILLERY RECORDS who will be released the album on CD and digitally on October 12th 2010.

Touring non-stop across Canada and beyond, EVIL SURVIVES quickly gained a reputation as a ripping live act, with piercing croons, guitar heroics, shotgun bass, and wild antics. Taking the torch from those who came before them, EVIL SURVIVES are positioned to become a leading force for the fight for the rightful return of Heavy Metal… and the execution of false metal everywhere.

Dead of Night Releases New Demos – Featuring Past and Present Members of Shadows Fall, Unearth, and More

February 6th, 2011
by EvilG

Combining modern hard rock and metal with powerful vocals, huge driving guitars, and a massive rhythm section, DEAD OF NIGHT is poised to destroy the current stale world of rock. With a strong focus on the melodic elements of the 80’s, the dark harmonies of the 90’s and a new modern twist, they have teamed up to deliver a familiar, but original sound. DEAD OF NIGHT is comprised of seasoned musicians Matt Bachand (Shadows Fall), Jon Donais (Shadows Fall), Derek Kerswill (ex-Unearth, ex-Seemless, Kingdom Of Sorrow), Jeff Fultz (ex-Seemless) and newly announced singer Jason Witte (ex-Goaded).

Demos of new DEAD OF NIGHT music have recently surfaced. Fans can listen to the tracks at the band’s MySpace and Facebook pages. Recorded by the band and mixed by Chris “Zeuss” Harris, DEAD OF NIGHT conjure sounds of classic metal and rock influences such as early Metallica, Motley Crue, Alice In Chains and even Whitesnake, yet still maintain a modern edge that is clearly heard in songs such as ‘Shades of Grey’ and ‘In Your Hands’.

“There are too many bands out there with one radio-friendly song and nine throw-away tracks just to fill up an album,” states Jason Donias.

“We want our audience to be blown away with each and every song,” adds Matt Bachand. “This project has been a lot of fun as it is quite a departure from what we usually do musically, we are all looking forward to getting on the stage and showing the world what DEAD OF NIGHT is all about.”

The band has yet to debut the material live, but plan on scheduling some regional shows soon. To learn more about DEAD OF NIGHT, visit these sites below:

Commended Metal Maniacs: “The Human Machine is a monster here to restore the idea that the world’s most grotesque and horrifying subject matter has a place to unfurl itself and those of us who indulge can do so without worrying if a hair’s out of place.”

Germany’s veteran melodic heavy metal outfit, Deadlock, has released a digital single of the song, “State Of Decay”, downloadable now through iTunes at: http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/state-of-decay-single/id414877510.  In addition to the track itself, the digital single contains two bonus remixes; “State Of Decay” remix by S.U.N. Project, and “Virus Jones” by TRICKPOP.  “State Of Decay” is the first track to be released from Deadlock’s fifth studio album, Bizarro World, which is due out on March 15th on Lifeforce Records.

In addition to the “State Of Decay” digital single, Deadlock has launched a free downloadable ringtone (MP3 and iPhone format), available on the Lifeforce Records official website at: www.lifeforcerecords.com/sounds/Deadlock_ringtone.zip.

Bizarro World album teaser is currently streaming on the official Deadlock MySpace at: http://www.myspace.com/deadlock.

The track list for Bizarro World is…1. Virus Jones2. State Of Decay3. Falling Skywards4. Earthlings5. You Left Me Dead6. Brutal Romance7. Alienation8. Renegade9. Htrae10. Bizarro World11. Paranoia Extravaganza“’Bizarro World’ is a gem of an album” – AllVoices.com“DEADLOCK manages to combine elements of all around the musical spectrum into one giant cohesive piece of musical artwork.” SCRATCHtheSurface Webzine Bizarro World was produced by Deadlock guitarist, Sebastian Reichl, at Slaughter’s Palace studios this fall.

On Bizarro World, Deadlock has designed an interpretation of a world built up on extremes and antitheses.  The album is based on the concept of “Bizarro”, which originated in DC Comics in the early 1960s, and represents a weirdly mutilated version of earthly creations.  However, contrary to the concept of a world stigmatizing perfection, sonically, Bizarro World strives for the opposite.

Deadlock’s sound can be described as a combination of opposed elements, such as sharp guitar-assaults, pop and dance quotations, orchestral profundity, gruffly growls, and beautiful clean vocals.  With Bizarro World, the band seeks to improve on what they already did so well in the past, while offering a wider, self-assured view on symphonic and brutal metal, based on a progressive approach.

Over their previous Lifeforce offerings, Earth.Revolt (2005), Wolves (2007) and Manifesto (2008), Deadlock has accentuated the signature of their metal sound, which hovers somewhere in between beauty and darkness, with increasing relevance.  The band has toured in support of such accredited acts as Lacuna Coil, All That Remains, Sonic Syndicate, Dark Tranquillity, Caliban, and Heaven Shall Burn within the past two years.Stay tuned for more information on Deadlock and Bizarro World.

Deadlock is…
Johannes Prem – vocals

“Steve Vai is one of the most popular guitarists on the planet, and deservedly so,” says Dave Kusek, CEO of Berkleemusic. “We’re thrilled and honored to partner with Steve for this unique online guitar lesson, and excited to play a part in exposing a record-setting number of guitarists from around the world to his ‘otherworldly’ techniques.”

Berkleemusic and Steve Vai have also partnered to author a brand new 12-week online course: Steve Vai Guitar Techniques. This online course presents students with the chance to gain a deep understanding of Vai’s death-defying playing styles, repertoire, techniques, and musical concepts from anywhere in the world, and incorporate their learnings into their own playing. The Steve Vai Guitar Techniques online course builds upon the renowned guitar curriculum that Berklee has been providing to students for decades. The course is now open for enrollment for the school’s spring term which begins on April 4th, 2011.
