Sometimes things happen in fast and unexpected ways. I wasn’t ready for an interview with Poisonblack at all, but suddenly in the middle of their touring, I had a chance to talk with guitarist Janne Markus and bassist Antti Remes. We had a somewhat hectic interview session, so we talked… talked about… Just wait! I need to take my pills in the right order. DONE! So yeah, just go on and read some more about this  relentless and rockin´ Finnish bunch so that you know what’s going on in the Poisonblack-camp these days.

Interview with TESTAMENT guitarist Eric Peterson

Interview + pictures by Luxi Lahtinen

TESTA - Eric.jpg

Testament have been touring their ass off ever since their excellent comeback album, THE FORMATION OF DAMNATION, was released in 2008. They have done many headlining tours of their own during 2008-2009, this including playing as a part of “Priest East” together with the mighty Judas Priest and Megadeth on their UK tour in February 2009 – and overall just working really hard touring-wise to keep the band´s name on people lips the best they can.

Testament also played at Ankkarock festival in Finland on August 2nd and were very well received there by the fans. After their gig I met a tired Eric Peterson briefly in Testament´s dressing room, and he was kind enough to tell what´s still in store for Testament for the remaining months of this ongoing year…

THE DEVIL’S BLOOD

Interview and pics by Arto Lehtinen

The Dutch occult combo The Devil’s Blood have gained both interest and attention with mysterious classic sounding hard rock elements. The band is heavily influenced by 60/70’s psychedelic hard rock and has doomy metallic elements involved as well. The most recent output called THE TIME OF NO TIME EVERMORE has seen the light of day or the dark of night. Therefore it was a good moment to interview a mysterious member Selim Lemouchi who tells more about  the world of The Devil’s Blood.

THE VOICE OF DOOM METAL – ROBERT LOWE

The singer of Candlemass and Solitude Aeturnus

Interview and pics by Arto Lehtinen

Transcription by Antaura Zed

Robert Lowe has fronted the mighty Texas doom metal legends Solitude Aeturnus since the early 90’s and gained a respectable status as one of the greatest metal vocalists. Back in 2007 when the Swedish doom metal giant Candlemass were struggling with a vocalist problem again, looking for a suitable vocalist – an unexpected rescue came from the other side of the world. When Robert Lowe teamed up with Candlemass, he had a big task to convince old Candlemass fans. The second album with Robert Lowe as a frontman of Candlemass entitled “Death Magic Doom” is an perfect masterpiece in the doom metal genre. Before Candlemass took to the stage, I had the great opportunity of talking about Solitude Aeturnus and Candlemass.  (The interview was conducted during the Tuska festival time).

HIRAX – Katon W. De Pena & Glenn Rogers

September 7th, 2009
by Robert Williams

Interview with Katon W. De Pena and Glenn Rogers

Conducted by Robert Williams

Videography Courtesy of Sandra Torres

Longtime thrash metal assassins Hirax recently embarked on a mini tour of the Lonestar State; performing for die hard thrashers in Houston, Austin and Corpus Christi, Texas before taking the metal to the masses outside the US where the band will play to large crowds of rabid thrash metal maniacs in Chile, Argentina and Puerto Rico.

On the immediate horizon for the band looms the upcoming "El Rostro De La Muerte" release. An album that you will learn pushed the band to their very limits to produce. I recently had the chance to talk metal with vocalist Katon W. De Pena and guitarist Glenn Rogers about the new album, adventures when touring abroad, and much more. It would be a difficult task to find two more friendly and genuine headbangers than Katon and Glenn. You really get the sense that they are as eager to talk metal with you and learn about your local metal scene as vice-versa. Later that same evening I witnessed firsthand the intensity and breakneck speed of Hirax in concert. If you are lucky enough to have Hirax come to your area; take my word for it and catch them live. You will not be disappointed…You may have to schedule a visit to your chiropractor afterwards from all of the headbanging however…

Tuska Open Air 2009

TUSKA 2009

by Arto Lehtinen

As everyone who was there still recalls, last year’s Tuska was an outstanding and brilliant event in several ways. Several great headliners literally crowned the event last year when Morbid Angel and Slayer unleashed and utter maelstrom resulting in a ballistic reaction amongst the audience. Besides the younger generation was absolutely thrilled about having an opportunity to witness Killswitch Engage. Topping the previous year is always a complex task for any organization of any festival. Obviously the Tuska organization may have faced a problem to top the previous events as the 2009 line-up didn’t look that tempting and convicting on paper. However, there were true highlights and and long awaited names in the line-up. It felt somehow that  these bands didn’t bring the metallic pleasure enough for the crowd. As with much recent news items, the global economic depression is a factor that impacts these large metal festivals and secondly it has to be pointed out that several mainstream rock festivals have been eager to book metal bands to the line-up, at least here in Finland. It is kind of weird to see, for example, Testament playing at a mainstream rock festival, whereas Tuska is supposed to be a metal festival even a few Japanese hara-kiri j-rock pokemon rock combos were there and of course Volbeat.

The audience have obviously realized the low offering of the Tuska festival because of any single day was not sold out. According to sources, some 9000 metalheads visited the area every day. Apparently that number is a little bit exaggerated. This year’s Tuska article is a little bit different compared to other years. There are a few clear points as some of bands didn’t present a metal approach that much, especially the Japanese ones, and one Danish band. Here is the shorter review of the fest to see and feel what Tuska offered this year.

UFO – drummer Andy Parker

August 19th, 2009
by Marko Syrjala

ANDY PARKER

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the classic UK rock band UFO. Still featured in the ranks are two founding members, vocalist (and the only constant in the bands event rich history) Phil Mogg and drummer Andy Parker. For the past few years the lineup has in addition consisted of two other members of the bands perhaps best loved (”Lights Out”) incarnation, namely bassist Pete Way and keyboardist Paul Raymond, with Vinnie Moore on guitar since 2005 who is filling the shoes of the mad axe man Michael Schenker. UFO’s newest record entitled THE VISITOR is their 20th studio album and the first one since 1988’s AIN’T MISBEHAVIN’ without the wild man Pete Way on board. Filling in on bass for the album is Peter Pichl, and on this summer’s tour, Barry Sparks. For this interview we sat down with Andy Parker to learn more, not just about Pete’s predicament, but many other things relating to the past, present and future of UFO.

Divine Heresy – Travis Neal

August 17th, 2009
by EvilG

Divine Heresy – Travis Neal

Interviewed by Alan Gilkeson

After the unheralded departure of their former lead singer, Divine Heresy sought a vocalist who was not only better with the pipes, but who had it all together in the head. They auditioned many guys and settled on Bereaved front man Travis Neal, a young but motivated talent with the bravado to take on the world. With the recent release of the band’s sophomore effort BRINGER OF PLAGUES, Neal’s first with the band, Divine Heresy has stepped thing up a notch, going full throttle with brutal and extreme music. Combine Neal’s talent with the legend of Dino Cazares, mix in one of the best rhythm sections in Metal with Tim Yeung and Joe Payne, and you’ve got quality of epic proportions. Here’s our interview with Travis…
