SCORPIONS: Live at Kotka, FINLAND 25.07 2008

KOTKAN MERIPÄIVÄT

25.07 2008 KOTKA, FINLAND

Kotkan Meripäivät is not such a festival where you can see too many metal or hard rock bands but sometimes the deviation approves all rules and this year the legendary Scorpions were headlining this three day festival. Scorpions are still continuing to tour support for bands latest release HUMANITY VOL 1, which came out over a year ago. In fact it was less than two months since Scorps last time played in Finland when they co -headlining Sauna Open Air -festival in Tampere but almost sold out audience in Kotka proved that there’s a huge demand for Scorpions in Finland.

VINNY APPICE – Heaven & Hell, Derringer, 3 Legged Dog, ex-DIO

August 3rd, 2008
by Marko Syrjala

SR2007p2 234.jpg

VINNY APPICE

Vinny Appice, having got an early introduction to drumming from his big brother Carmine Appice [ex-OZZY OSBOURNE, CACTUS, VANILLA FUDGE], first rose to fame in 1976 in DERRINGER, alongside Rick Derringer, Kenny Aaronson and Danny Johnson. Together they toured and released two studio albums (DERRINGER in 1976 and SWEET EVIL in 1977) and, to cap things off, a live record (LIVE in 1977). Now, after thirty years, the classic lineup of the band (that was only ever together for less than two years to begin with) has been resurrected for some very special appearances around the world. In the interim, like the other members of DERRINGER, Vinny Appice has gone on to achieve even bigger success in various forms. In 1978 he released an album (IT’S A CIRCUS WORLD) with AXIS, before facing the formidable task of filling Bill Ward’s boots, in BLACK SABBATH, for the remainder of the HEAVEN AND HELL tour. He then went on to record the now legendary MOB RULES album with them, as well as the double live record, LIVE EVIL. After Ronnie James Dio’s first reign at the helm of BLACK SABBATH came to an end, Vinny chose to accompany him in forming a brand new band, DIO. Together they went on to record multiple gold (SACRET HEART in 1985) and platinum (HOLY DIVER in 1983 and LAST IN LINE in 1984) selling albums. Finally in 1992 Vinny and Ronnie rejoined BLACK SABBATH for the DEHUMANIZER record and ensuing tour. After the Costa Mesa debacle, Vinny joined Ronnie for another couple of DIO records, before, in the late ’90s, jumping ship again to fill in for ailing Bill Ward on BLACK SABBATH’s "Reunion" tour. More recently Vinny has, among other things, put out an excellent record (FROZEN SUMMER) with his band, 3 LEGGED DOGG, featuring Jimmy Bain (ex-RAINBOW, ex-DIO), Carlos Cavazo (ex-QUIET RIOT), Chas West (ex-BONHAM) and Brian Young. All of this, of course, before once again being called to duty with HEAVEN & HELL to record three new songs for the BLACK SABBATH compilation album (THE DIO YEARS) and a subsequent tour. Now, with a phenomenal tour and a gold selling live release ("LIVE FROM RADIO MUSIC CITY HALL in 2007) to show for it, it’s almost time for another studio album.

We caught up with Vinny after he had just finished a killer show with DERRINGER at the prestigious Sweden Rock Festival (which last year he played with HEAVEN & HELL). Rock ‘n’ Roll!

Patrick Wirén of Midas Touch / Misery Loves Co.

July 20th, 2008
by Jason Petrochko

Midas Touch Logo.jpg

INTERVIEW WITH VOCALIST PATRICK WIRÉN

MIdas Touch Patrick Wiren.jpg

FROM BAND’S MYSPACE PAGE:

If you thought Sweden’s musical heritage could be measured by just one soulless stadium export, then think again. Since their inception, Midas Touch have been struggling for individuality within an often-anonymous Speed Metal scene. Inspired if never directly influenced by the heavenly Metallica, Slayer and a cast of many including industrial jazz and classical, this young Swedish quintet took three years to perfect their lyrical and musical masterplan. Careful in the selection of musicians, determined not to be lumped into the abyss of the mindless many, bassist Patrik Sporrong and his cousin Rickard were to prove that Speed did not have to sacrifice Soul. Formed in the summer of ´85, it wasn´t until 1988 that Midas Touch leapt to the attention of the European underground Radio and Press with "Ground Zero" – their first recorded works. Swayed by such roots groundswell, Noice International were quick to sign the band in the autumn of ´88 for a five year development deal. Midas Touch spent Christmas in Skytrak studio with producer Roy Rowland (Sabbat, Kreator). The results can be heard on the uncompromising debut album "Presage Of Disaster". Taking a cocerned lyrical stand against the arm´s race, drugs and apartheid, Midas Touch have succesfully married the intelligent to their brutal and complicated music. Think again. Presage Of Disaster was released in March 1989 on album, cassette and CD. – Noise International 1989

Bloodstock Open Air 2008 Preview

July 17th, 2008
by Hanntu

BOA2008(lo).jpg

For a country that has probably contributed more towards heavy music than any other country in the world, the UK is severely lacking in a major, pure metal festival that can rival Wacken, Hellfest, Graspop or Tuska, ever since the discontinuation of the legendary Monsters of Rock in Castle Donington. Download Festival, Monsters of Rock’s successor, manages to draw some of the biggest metal names, but dilutes it with other non-metal and rock acts. The annual Damnation Festival in Leeds is commendably stalwart, but a one-day festival really does not sate the English metalhead’s appetite. The solution therefore is to look towards Bloodstock.

Bloodstock started out as an indoor festival for metal back in 2001 in the English Midlands of Derbyshire. The first installation saw some big names of metal like Saxon, Blaze and Primal Fear, and it was up and running. 2002 saw Diamond Head, Blind Guardian and Gamma Ray appear, as well as Primordial and Bal-Sagoth. In 2003, Nightwish, Edguy, Paradise Lost made their debuts, while Blaze and Saxon returned. In 2004, Gamma Ray and Primal Fear returned, with the appearance of Children of Bodom, Sonata Arctica and Evergrey.

The names were getting bigger, but Bloodstock have always tried to give smaller bands the chance to make their name, especially English bands. Dragonforce made an appearance in 2003, right about the time they were entering the metal consciousness on mp3.com. Evile got spotted in 2006 and later got signed by Earache on the strength of their performance. The Unsigned Stage is only marginally secondary to the Main Stage, with English fans coming to support their mates’ bands.

In 2005, the founders took the brave step of bringing Bloodstock to the Open Air. On the website, they cite Wacken as giving them support and publicity via their “European marketing muscle”, as well as giving them sound practical advice. With Sebastian Bach and Children of Bodom headlining BOA 2005, the outdoor festival was also up and running. Since its humble beginnings, the outdoor festival has gone from strength to strength, with Lacuna Coil, Nevermore, Testament, Arch Enemy, Dark Tranquillity and In Flames headlining last year, in what is undoubtedly the biggest (maybe the only) festival dedicated purely to metal in the UK.
