Death Angel - Relentless Retribution

Death Angel - Relentless Retribution

San Francisco Bay Area thrash legends, DEATH ANGEL, have uploaded the album cover art by Brent Elliot White (JOB FOR A COWBOY,CARNIFEX, WHITECHAPEL) for their upcoming release entitled Relentless Retribution, to their official Myspace page [Out on September 3, 2010 (Europe) and September 14, 2010 (North America)]

Relentless Retribution is a full return to the bands thrash roots and will be released on September 3rd in Europe and the 14th in North America.

The album was recorded at Audio Hammer Studios in Sanford, Florida with production genius Jason Suecof (TRIVIUM, AUGUST BURNS RED, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, ALL THAT REMAINS, WHITE CHAPEL, DEVILDRIVER).

Vocalist Mark Osegueda commented:

“I haven’t been as excited about the cover artwork on any other DEATH ANGEL album as I am for this one! It fits the whole theme of the album! Angry and aggressive! I think what excites me most is that Brent did the artwork based on our lyrics! It wasn’t an already finished product. When we first saw Brent’s work we were floored by the mixture of fantasy meets reality and we knew we wanted him to do the artwork for this album! In the end he surpassed our expectations with the fiercest DEATH ANGEL album cover to date!”

Cover artist Brent Elliot White added:

“Originally the theme of this album was betrayal by those close to you and revenge against the deceitful. After a pretty spirited conversation with Rob and emails back and forth the saying “Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing” kept coming up. Basically we danced around that metaphor till it became pretty clear that a direct interpretation was the way to go. Illustrating betrayal and revenge in a single piece proved to be a challenge but as I received the lyrics to the songs things quickly fell into place.“

Legendary manager – BILL AUCOIN (R.I.P)

July 1st, 2010
by Marko Syrjala

Bill Aucoin

Legendary manager Bill Aucoin sadly passed away at age 66 in June 28th after losing his long battle against prostate cancer. Bill was the man known for masterminding and managing the career of the group KISS but later on he also managed such bands as: Starz, Billy Squier and Billy Idol amongst many other names. I interviewed Bill back in 2006 in Helsinki when was here working with Finnish monster band Lordi. For reason or another this interview was never published in here in so I decided to do it now as my tribute to Bill.

THE CROWN Sign Worldwide Deal With Century Media Records; Announce New Album Title

June 30th, 2010
by EvilG
The Crown - 2010

The Crown - 2010

Swedish Death Metal legends THE CROWN have signed a worldwide deal with Century Media Records. Marko Tervonen (guitars) states: “We are happy as hell to turn a new page in THE CROWN’s history book and to pick up the journey with Century Media Records supporting us feels great. We can’t wait to unleash the new album, Doomsday King, upon you all!”

Jens Prueter (Head of A+R, Century Media Europe) further comments: “Some of the very early Century Media signings have been Unleashed, Grave, Tiamat, Asphyx, Morgoth – the glory days of the first Death Metal wave. We are still in love with Death Metal and are more than proud to announce the signing of Swedish Death Metal legends THE CROWN. They haven’t lost any aggression since the early 90’s and are still a guarantee for some Death Metal Holocaust! In case of doubt, go to one of the summer festivals and hear some new songs live before the album’s fall release. We will be there as well. Cheers!”

The band was founded in 1990 in Trollhättan under the name Crown of Thorns but was forced to change their name to THE CROWN in 1998 due to another band from the U.S. using that name. Three of the original founding members are still in the band: Marko Tervonen (guitar), Magnus Olsfelt (bass) and Janne Saarenpää (drums). In 1993, Marcus Sunesson (guitar) stepped in to replace Robert Österberg. In 2004, the band announced their break up, but by good luck for all Death Metal fans, the band decided to reform in 2009 with Jonas Stålhammar (from the Death Metal pioneers God Macabre) taking over vocal duties from Johan Lindstrand. For more background information about the reunion, please check the in-depth interview Marko did last December with Metal Sucks.

The new album Doomsday King is planned for fall release and stay tuned to for all new info as it becomes available.

DANZIG: Returns to Billboard charts with “Deth Red Sabaoth”

June 30th, 2010
by EvilG

Brooklyn, NY – The release of DANZIG’s brand new album, Deth Red Sabaoth returns the legendary artist to the Billboard Charts this week.

Deth Red Sabaoth was released on June 22 on Evilive/The End Records and is Danzig’s ninth studio album and first in over six years. The album debuts this week on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart at #35 and at #3 on the Top Independent Album Chart. It marks Danzig’s highest-charting album since the release of Danzig 4 in 1994.

The 11-track collection was written and produced by Glenn Danzig and joining Glenn in the studio for the recording of Deth Red Sabaoth were guitarist Tommy Victor (Prong, Ministry), a Danzig cohort on and off since 1997, and drummer Johnny Kelly (Type O Negative, Seventh Void).  While Kelly has toured with Glenn intermittently since 2002, this is the first time he has recorded with the band.  Glenn handled the bass chores for most of the album, and played drums on “Black Candy.”

The CD cover artwork for Deth Red Sabaoth is an original painting by the award-winning artist Joe Chiodo whose work has graced not only Danzig’s Verotik publishing line, but the covers of numerous graphic novels and comic books, including “X-Men Unlimited.”

Deth Red Sabaoth marks Danzig’s ninth studio venture that began back in 1988 with the Rick Rubin-produced, Platinum-certified, Danzig. In 1993 “Mother” became a major hit and added to his iconic status that began over a decade earlier when he founded the near-mythic punk band Misfits and then Samhain.  Sales of over ten-million albums later and having been dubbed “goth-punk’s godfather” by SPIN, Glenn Danzig is arguably the most versatile talent to emerge from hardcore’s first wave, and truly is a renaissance man – a graphic designer, photographer, comic book publisher and composer.  His venture into composing and recording classical music yielded Black Aria, that debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Classical charts, and Black Aria II, that had Glenn sharing the Billboard/Classical’s Top Ten with Itzhak Perlman and Andrea Bocelli.  His indelible stamp is on artists like Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails, and he has written songs that have been sung by a diverse array of artists, from Metallica to Roy Orbison to Johnny Cash.

Over his decades-long career, Glenn Danzig’s intense musical and lyrical statements have left a permanent mark on rock music, and continue to do so going into the 21st century.  Glenn’s song “Thirteen,” originally written for Johnny Cash and then recorded for Glenn’s own Satan’s Child album, was the opening song in last year’s box office smash and Golden Globe winner, “The Hangover.”

Danzig – Glenn, guitarist Tommy Victor, drummer Johnny Kelly and bassist Steve Zing – also a founding member of Samhain with Glenn – recently completed an exclusive 9-city album release tour and will continue to tour extensively to support Deth Red Sabaoth.

OCTOBER TIDE’s A Thin Shell Set For US Release

June 30th, 2010
by EvilG

Candlelight Records today confirms September 28 as the North American release date for A Thin Shell, the new album from Sweden’s OCTOBER TIDE. Currently featuring guitarist/founder Fredrik Norrman (Katatonia), vocalist Tobias Netzell, drummer Robin Bergh, and session bassist Jonas Kjellgren (Scar Symmetry, Carnal Forge), the album is the band’s first in ten years and follows the 2009 reissue of their debut, Rain Without End (Candlelight).

Mixed/mastered at Black Lounge Studios in Sweden and featuring artwork from American photographer/graphic designer Travis Smith (Opeth, Katatonia, Testament, Death), A Thin Shell delivers what fans have anxiously awaited from this treasured band. Seven doom-laden and emotive songs that are every bit as heavy as they are catchy fill the impressive recording that officially closes the band’s self-imposed, decade-long hiatus.

“I have wanted to get OCTOBER TIDE back together for some time,” reveals Norrman. “When we decided the time was right, ideas for new songs surprisingly came together nicely. Many sleepless nights were involved, with lots of coffee of course, but the songs were written in flow one after another.”

Discussing the recording process Norrman notes, “we started recording in March of last year. Jonas (Kjellgren) liked what he heard and offered to get it into the (Black Lounge) studio’s schedule even though we didn’t have a label yet. What was meant as a side project so long ago is now my main project and I am very proud of it. We only hope people enjoy it as much as we do.”

Formed in 1995 by then Katatonia guitarist Norrman and Katatonia/Bloodbath vocalist Jonas Renkse, OCTOBER TIDE quickly made a mark with two albums recorded and released during the years 1997 and 1999 (Rain Without End and Grey Dawn, respectively). Much of the band’s music was written during a short break up of Katatonia which later proved only temporary as the band would reform and continues today; their latest album Night Of The New Day features work by Norrman. OCTOBER TIDE would not perform live during this short period of activity and few interviews with the members were granted despite praise from both media and fans. The band, until reforming in late 2009, would maintain a cult status throughout the doom/metal community.

Decibel Magazine calls Rain Without End “a peculiar album. It reminds of past and future Katatonia albums yet, it’s entirely unique in vibe and riff assembly.OCTOBER TIDE‘s slow to mid-paced doom/death stuns… Renkse and Norrman using counterpoint, build/release tension and melody to peerless effect.” EBlogger Lonely Ghost Transmissions on its 2008 review of the album’s European re-release says, “Rain Without End is without a doubt the greatest doom-death metal album ever.”

A Thin Shell Track Listing
1. “A Custodian of Science”
2. “Deplorable Request”
3. “The Nighttime Project”
4. “Blackness Devours”
5. “The Dividing Line”
6. “Fragile”
7. “Scorned”

Candlelight Records is distributed exclusively in the United States by Caroline Distribution, EMI Music for Canada, and Plastichead Music for the rest of the world.

CONSPIRACY To Release Third Full-Length; Track Listing + Cover Art Unveiled

June 30th, 2010
by EvilG
CONSPIRACY return with their third full-length, Irremediable

CONSPIRACY return with their third full-length, Irremediable.

Dutch extreme metal assault CONSPIRACY return with their third full-length, Irremediable. The record offers 12 warring tracks with artwork inspired by controversial 17th century artist  Félicien Rops. View the cover to the right.

Previously helmed by sole member Carpathian Wolf, aka A’ Hazred, best known for his work with Sumerian black metallers Melechesh, CONSPIRACY now features Wolf alongside German guitarist, composer and orchestrator Aryan Blaze.

Elaborated Wolf on the latest offering: “This time CONSPIRACY doesn’t just spit rage and hatred but presents the symphony of sinister entertainment for the elite black metal consumer. The material on Irremediable ranges from blackened heavy metal with melodic and harmonious guitar solos to black metal with unorthodox elements, which will pleasantly surprise even the most spoilt listeners. The cover art,” he continues, “is based on the painting by the Belgian Satanist painter Félicien Rops (1833-1898), which goes really fine with the dark poetry of Aleister Crowley, Charles Baudelaire and some other classical masters. As an additional treat, some of the songs that are on Irremediable will feature pre-recorded drum performances by Dirk Verbeuren (Aborted, Soilwork, Scarve etc.) taken from The Library Of The Extreme – Blasts & Fills by Toontrack.”

Track Listing
1. “Nocturnal Hunters”
2. “Ouverture” (Instrumental)
3. “Black Mass”
4. “End Of Religion”
5. “Pentagram”
6. “The Invocation Of Hecate”
7. “Irremediable”
8. “The Hag”
9. “Armageddon Broke”
10. “A Dream Of Fear”
11. “Carpathian Sunset” (Instrumental)
12. “Bukovina”

Irremediable will be released via Pulverised Records later this year. Official street date TBA.

After several auditions in Copenhagen, Hatesphere is now ready to announce their new frontman, Esben “Esse” Hansen and a string of German and Austrian live dates.

Esben “Esse” Hansen, who also sings in As We Fight, immediately joins the ranks of Hatesphere. However, bassist Mixen Lindberg has chosen to leave Hatesphere for other projects. Mixen is temporarily replaced by the old Hatesphere-member Mikael Ehlert until the end of 2010.

04.08 WIEN (AT) Viper Room

05.08 EGELSEE (D) Schwarzer Adler

06.08 MARKTREDWITZ (D) Sticky Fingers Festival
Earlier this year, Jonathan Albrechtsen left Hatesphere just before their first U.S. tour with The Black Dahlia Murder. Esse and Ehlert can now look forward to a six-week long U.S. and Canada tour stretching from September 23rd – November 5th where Hatesphere supports Nevermore along with Warbringer and Mutiny Within.

Esse comments:

“It didn’t take me much time to decide that I wanted to be the new singer of Hatesphere. Besides making some of the best metal music on Danish soil Hatesphere is one of the coziest bands in Denmark. And I’m very excited to be a permanent part of it all. Looking forward to screaming my lungs out for you on stage!”

Pepe comments:

“After having searched up and down and in between we’re honored to present Esse as new frontman in HateSphere. He’s got the qualities that we have been looking for but which have shown very hard to find. He’s got a brutal varied voice that will be a pleasure to hear in HateSphere. He’s got the necessary experience you will only get by playing tons of shows in front of big and small crowds. He knows what he is getting into – and last but not least he’s a great guy! Welcome to HateSphere – we look forward to kicking major ass!”

Furthermore, fans from Denmark, Spain and Portugal can expect more live dates soon.

Sunday night, Kiss closed out the anniversary edition of Graspop Metal Meeting with the necessary props, glitter and pyro – or what did you expect? Four simple words characterise this year’s edition: sun, sand, beer and metal, the ideal festival mix for the metal hordes! No fewer than 130,000 metalheads flocked to the GMM arena this year to catch leading bands from all metal genres live on stage.

On Friday, 45,000 metal fans made their way to the arena. Oceans of Sadness kicked off this year’s festivities and recorded their show for a future live release. Anvil were the first to raise a few eyebrows when they played a guitar solo with a golden dildo. Next it was time for thrash metal gods Slayer to tame the masses. The su n was still beating down mercilessly when Sepultura took the stage and Saxon and Mötorhead kept the temperature high and the fists pumping. Aerosmith headlined the first day with a fantastic greatest hits set.

Day 2 was even hotter than the first but the metal armies refused to give in. They came out in great numbers and when Sabaton mounted the stage around noon, thousands of die-hards had already gathered in front of the main stage. Walls of Jericho got the dozens of crowd surfers they wanted and Airbourne went one better by getting the fans in the front rows to take someone on their shoulders. Slash gave the fans what they wanted (Guns ’n Roses hits) and Soulfly put the icing on the cake with a blazing set.

Sunday provided no reprieve from the heat. It was still hotter than hell on the Dessel plains but that didn’t keep the fans from going for it, no holds barred!

Thanks to the unbridled enthusiasm of no fewer than 130,000 metalheads, this anni versary edition will go down in GMM history as one of the best ever! Thanks for a fantastic weekend and… see you all next year!!

WHILE HEAVEN WEPT Live Album Details Announced

June 29th, 2010
by EvilG

WHILE HEAVEN WEPT are currently working on the forthcoming release of their new live album Triumph:Tragedy:Transcendence – Live At The Hammer Of Doom Festival set for a November 2010 release date.

Triumph:Tragedy:Transcendence will be made available as a CD/DVD set courtesy of Cruz Del Sur Music, as well as a 2xLP set via a joint collaboration between Cruz Del Sur Music, Iron Kodex, and High Roller Records. The DVD portion will contain several bonus features that will be detailed after the band will finish the studio work on the masters.

The release is a stunning 24-track audio capture of WHILE HEAVEN WEPT’s performance at the Posthalle in Würzburg, Germany on February 6th, 2010. The final master will be later synchronized to the multi-camera pro-shot footage, resulting in the band’s very first DVD. This release is guaranteed to take all fans by surprise, seen the awesome quality of both audio and video materials.

The philosophy behind this release is twofold; First, it is an expression of gratitude to everyone who attended the show – who made it such a special, unforgettable experience for the band. Secondly, being that there are so many fans of the band who they’ve not been able to reach tour-wise, this record should help tide those fans over until WHILE HEAVEN WEPT can make it to their town.

In the words of WHW’s Tom Phillips, “The audio quality of this release is incredible – perhaps in some ways better than even Vast Oceans Lachrymose – along with the excellent energy of the performances and the excitement of the improvisations. The video is even more amazing, so expertly filmed and edited by our friends at Streetclip TV in Germany.”

Expect Triumph:Tragedy:Transcendence – Live At The Hammer Of Doom Festival to be an incredible live testimonial of WHV excellent musicianship and stage power, a release which will haunt your stereo and DVD player for many a night of relentless epic doom!!
