VILE VINDICTION – guitarist Jim Nickles (original founding member of Malevolent Creation)

Interview by Luxi Lahtinen

Jim - headspin.gif

Jim Nickles is one of the original founding members of Malevolent Creation. After parting ways with Malevolent Creation due to some personal reasons, he joined Hellwitch for a tour during 1990-91. Jim was struggling in his life due to having a drug problem, but however eventually learned his lessons by reaching many setbacks in his life by a continuous use of drugs.
Vile Vindiction is Jim´s new incarnation of a brutal and heavy blend of both thrash- and death metal which best could be described as a sort of early Malevolent-Creation-meets-Slayer type of musical mixture. The band will have their debut 5-song E.P. out soon – and while we are all waiting to get to hear it, please read what Jim had to tell about Vile Vindiction – as well as f.ex. his involvements with both Malevolent Creation (formerly Resthaven) and Hellwitch as well.

Fashion Bomb

Interview with Fashion Bomb frontman Val

Fashion Bomb is poised to explode on the Industrial Metal circuit with the re-release of their debut offering "Angels To Some, Devils To Others" courtesy of Full Effect Records. I recently had the opportunity to visit with Fashion Bomb vocalist/frontman/mastermind Val, a classically trained opera singer with a penchant for aggressive music and a disdain for organized religion, about signing with Full Effect, what it means to be a Drone and his unique take on the music industry at large. Expect a new full length album to follow the debut’s reissue in the immediate future, and definitely try and catch these guys live when they come to your town if Industrial Metal is your cup of tea!

TUSKA 2008

TUSKA 2008

Review by the Finnish team of Metal-Rules.com

"No Pain No Gain" as Scorpions used to sing, but the last weekend of June in the central park of Helsinki was nothing but pure pain from the beginning to the end in a good way. The Tuska Open Air metal festival has been taken place ten years in a row. The first festival took place at the Tavastia club back in 1998. As the years passed by, the festival has grown bigger and carved out its prestigious and now legendary reputation all around the world.

Traditional metal had a minor role on the roster of Tuska 2008. Extreme metal, in different forms, attracted and had drawn many extreme metal hearts. As well, metalcore bands KillSwitch Engage landed at Tuska for the first time with a massive impact. The younger audience appeared to be delighted about that. Power metal had the strongest presence as it had a dominating role last year. But booking Slayer, Carcass, and Morbid Angel were extreme brilliant achievements.

Even though the festival was sold out several months ago, the most  surprising thing from the Tuska organization was to let people of the age of 70+ go in for free! All in all a few hundred metal grandpa and grandma’s were witnessed headbanging for several bands!!!

As usual, the whole three piece Finnish Metal-Rules.Com squad attended Tuska again to sense a reek of putrefaction, feel raining blood and obtain the pleasure to kill. Enjoy!!

Headbangers Open Air 2008

Headbangers Open Air 2008

Brande-Hörnenkirchen Germany

The self proclaimed biggest garden party in the world was once again the gathering place for classic heavy metal fans, hellrats and rivetheads of the world. The first night (thursday 24th of July) was a warm up night with only a few bands performing. There was also a warm up for all this in Itzehoe day before but our group decided to stay in Hamburg to have a good ”sightseeing” around that wonderful town. And here’s what happened during our three day stay at the grassy fields of Brande-Hörnenkirchen.

The traffic culture and roads are too much different in Germany so sadly I was a bit late to start the party at it’s earliest. It was the first time when I arrived by car to Germany in to see festivals and there certainly were problems but we made it with my loyal driver, my little brother with icy nerves. So, after one year off I was again in HOA with high expectations. Great bands, atmosphere with dedicated legions of fans all around the globe not forgetting the delicious food. Sadly we missed Messenger and Roxxcalibur and arrived somewhere after and just heard Deadly Blessing and Benedictum who were a great soundtrack while putting together our old oversized tent. Luckily our german neighbors finally helped us so thanks to them who ever they were. So my festival starts from…

JOHN SYKES -Thin Lizzy, ex-Whitesnake, Blue Murder, Tygers of Pan Tang

September 7th, 2008
by Marko Syrjala

JOHN SYKES

The now legendary guitarist, John Sykes, first rose to public consciousness after joining the New Wave of British Heavy Metal band, TYGERS OF PAN TANG, for two albums; SPELLBOUND and CRAZY NIGHTS. He was then recruited into THIN LIZZY by the mastermind Phil Lynott himself. After one more album, the classic THUNDER AND LIGHTNING, as well as a double live LP entitled LIFE in 1983, THIN LIZZY was disbanded. Soon after John found himself working alongside Jon Lord, Cozy Powell, Neil Murray and David Coverdale in WHITESNAKE, in time to make an appearance on the 1984 SLIDE IT IN record. The biggest success was yet to come and took shape in the 1987 self-titled album, which went on to sell millions. Having been fired from WHITESNAKE (along with everybody else), John started his own band, BLUE MURDER, releasing two albums, the self-titled in 1989 and NOTHIN’ BUT TROUBLE in 1993. In 1994 John, Scott Gorham and Brian Downey decided to resurrect THIN LIZZY for some select shows, in honor of their departed leader. Since then, in between doing solo albums and tours, Sykes has, along with Scott Gorham, kept their version of THIN LIZZY going to the present day with the lineup presently being completed by drummer Tommy Aldridge and bass player Francesco DiCosmo. In this interview John Sykes shares some insights on the various stages of his illustrious career.

Tommi, Sami and Tapio tell a story about Survivors Zero

Interview by Luxi Lahtinen

Finland´s rising death metal "super group", Survivors Zero, is slowly building a reputation for themselves as one of the most noteworthy new Finnish death metal acts. They have made an overwhelming first impression on metalheads from all around the world. Survivors Zero´s debut 2-song demo, EXTINCTION (which was mixed by Jonas Kjellgren, the owner of Black Lounge Studio in Sweden and of Scar Symmetry fame), has gained lots of very good responses for the band for their downright heavy, ruthless and lethal death metal on that output.

Survivors Zero are preparing to record their debut full-length album sometimes around the beginning of 2009, while writing hectically new songs all the time for it – carrying out their own musical vision for death metal, with all the ambition and determination they have within the band.

Tommi, Sami and Tapio from Survivors Zero tell us all about Survivors Zero, their plans regarding their forthcoming debut album, how they feel about the current state of the Finnish metal scene – and many other things as well.

Live in Mexico City 06/15/08

Live Photos & Review by: Vanessa De Campos

Avantasia_2.jpg

Maybe Tobias Sammet underlined his name in the Metal market when rumors flooded the internet about his "strong consideration" in undergoing a sex change in 2005. Maybe it was just Edguy’s fist full of energetic German Power Metal that left fans and newbies thirsting for more. Whatever makes you think of Tobi – by rumors, because you’re a long time fan, or as a devoted hater of cheesy Power Metal, one thing is certain, don’t cut the guy short for his creative song writing, his immense stage presence and his talent.

ICED EARTH – Returning vocalist/god MATT BARLOW

Iced Earth – Vocalist Matt Barlow

Interview and transcription by HannTu

Live pics and interview pic by HannTu

One of the highlights of this year’s Bloodstock Open Air festival in England was the opportunity to see Iced Earth with Matt Barlow. Along with many other Iced Earth fans, I consider Matt Barlow to be the definitive voice of Iced Earth; and while Ripper Owens is a fine vocalist in his own right, the Iced Earth sound is pretty much incomplete without Matt’s soulful and emotional croon. When I was offered the chance to interview the man himself, I jumped at it, although I only had ten minutes.

The Iced Earth camp turned up late (stuck in traffic), and immediately Jon and Matt jumped off the bus to fulfil their publicity obligations, as true pros – even though they were due to be onstage in about two hours’ time. Matt looked pretty tired and flustered, but was anything but cold and distant, answering my somewhat inane questions with thoughtfulness and depth. Here’s the nine-minute interview…

THIN LIZZY – guitarist Scott Gorham

SCOTT GORHAM

INTERVIEW BY MARKO SYRJÄLÄ AND JARNO HUOVILA

PICTURES BY MARKO SYRJÄLÄ

After putting out three records as a trio, THIN LIZZY reinvented itself, to great success, as a four-piece featuring now the twin guitar leads of the American Scott Gorham and Scottish Brian Robertson. From that point on, Scott Gorham along with drummer Brian Downey, stuck with mastermind Phil Lynott until the band’s dissolution in 1983. Together they recorded nine classic studio albums (Nightlife in 1974, FIGHTING in 1975, JAILBREAK and JOHNNY THE FOX in 1976, BAD REPUTATION in 1977, BLACK ROSE in 1979, CHINATOWN in 1980, RENEGADE in 1981 and THUNDER AND LIGHTNING in 1983) and two live ones (LIVE AND DANGEROUS in 1978 and LIVE LIFE in 1983). Over the years, in addition to Robertson, Scott played alongside Gary Moore, Snowy White and finally John Sykes. Today, in tribute to their fallen comrade Phil Lynott, Gorham and Sykes continue to keep the THIN LIZZY name alive, touring all over world with legendary drummer Tommy Aldridge and bassist Francesco DiCosmo now completing the lineup. In between playing with THIN LIZZY Scott has, among other things, played with his own band 21 GUNS. Read on for Scott’s take on the different stages of his career!
