VOIVOD Members Contribute to 'MEAN DEVIATION: Four Decades of Progressive Heavy Metal'
Bazillion Points Books is proud to announce the late 2010 release of ‘MEAN DEVIATION: Four Decades of Progressive Heavy Metal’, by Jeff Wagner-a former editor of Metal Maniacs magazine and veteran supporter of metal’s most risk-taking bands. Wagner analyzes the heady side of metal in this exhaustive history of a relentlessly ambitious musical subculture. The book features extensive original artwork throughout by VOIVOD drummer Michel “Away” Langevin, including the lavish front cover which can be viewed at this location:
The book’s foreword was penned by PORCUPINE TREE founder Steven Wilson. Revered in progressive rock circles, the multi-talented Wilson is also highly respected by metalheads as producer of three landmark Opeth albums. As he writes: “In Jeff Wagner’s MEAN DEVIATION, we now have a definitive book on the relationship between metal and progressive music, and the myriad variation of styles that it has given rise to…In the meantime, metal continues to mutate and evolve, sometimes in the most unexpected ways, demonstrating that it is far from spent and is, in fact, the most flexible of musical forms.”
Beginning with 1970s progressive rock acts Rush and King Crimson, MEAN DEVIATION unfurls a colorful tapestry of sounds and styles, from the “Big Three” of 1980s prog metal-Queensrÿche, Fates Warning, and Dream Theater-to extreme pioneers Voivod, Watchtower, and Arcturus. As sparks of inspiration spread to obscure outposts in Scandinavia, Florida, and Japan, progressive metal burst into full creative flame with the successes of prog metal overlords Opeth, Meshuggah, Tool, Between the Buried and Me, and many others.
“One thing prog metal certainly is, is metal,” Wagner continues. “Hard and bold and brash, but refined, adulterated, and mutated. Progressive metal is heavy metal taken somewhere illuminating and sometimes bizarre.”
Weighing in at 400 pages, the heavily-illustrated book includes a 16-page color photo insert, a constellation of appendixes, and a full index. For more information, and to preorder, visit:
Singapore-based Pulverised Records is pleased to announce the re-signing of horror/gore death metallers BONE GNAWER.
BONE GNAWER is the collaboration between legendary growler Kam Lee (ex-Mantas, ex-Massacre, ex-Denial Fiend), Rogga Johansson (Paganizer, Demiurg, Ribspreader etc.), Ronnie Bjornstrom (Hate Ammo, Ribspreader, Taedeat) and Morgan Lie (Naglfar).
Commented Lee of the new album deal and the band’s upcoming recording: “It feels good to be back with Pulverised. This is the one label that has a true understanding of the type of oldschool ’90s style of death metal we play. This time around we’re taking another brave and bold approach to our musical direction and lyrical concepts. We always strive to go against the grain and not cater to modern trends, all the while staying true to the oldschool death metal sound. This time around we are going for a torture and vengeance type lyrical concept, although some of those traditional ‘cannibal themed’ type lyrics will remain. We are [going for] a grittier feel and a much darker edged ‘grind-house’ appeal to our lyrical concepts taking influences from some of the more hardcore exploitation type films of the late ’70s such as I Spit On Your Grave and Last House On The Left. Musically we are retaining the horrific blend of oldschool death metal we are known for, yet combining it with an even catchier flair.”
Further details on the follow-up to BONE GNAWER‘s Feast Of Flesh debut to be announced soon.
The dense, diverse seven tracks on All The Waters Of The Earth Turn To Blood form of the most twisted releases in recent doom metal history. The typical duo of THE BODY have teamed up with The Assembly Of Light Choir on this damning full-length, adding a totally mind engulfing, spine-chilling and downright freaky twist to the band’s already devastating doom, resulting in astonished, bewildered praise from Pitchfork, The New York Times, Decibel, Terrorizer, Metal Hammer, Rue Morgue and countless other major and D.I.Y. media outlets internationally in recent months.
The Rhode Island-based duo embarked on a two-month long tour in July in support of the release, and are about halfway through the venture as we speak, preparing to unleash hell on Denver tonight. IN THIS MOMENT will also be performing a series of special headlining shows all this week to get them back to LA for a massive homecoming show at The Whisky on Friday, Aug. 20th. Support on all of these headlining shows will be the Las Vegas based hard rock sensation Otherwise (featuring vocalist Adrian Patrick), who will be performing the soon to be ITM smash hit “The Promise” with Maria Brink at every show. Be sure to visit www.myspace.com/inthismoment now to view their entire touring itinerary.
Chris Howorth (guitars) further states: “As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end and it’s with mixed emotions that we say goodbye to Mayhem Fest 2010. This tour was so much fun and so good for our band that we wish it would just continue on for the rest of the year. We are definitely all feeling the end of tour blues after this run and will miss our bus mates in Norma Jean, along with all the new friends we made this summer, but we are also really excited and optimistic for our headlining shows and our future tour plans (we are putting together something really cool for our fans this fall). We want to keep touring to support our new CD through 2011, so stay tuned to our MySpace page in the coming weeks for a major announcement.”
IN THIS MOMENT performing “Just Drive” and “The Promise” on Fuel TV’s “The Daily Habit” show can be viewed now at the links below.
Following a successful first run in 2010, The Finnish Metal Tour will once again unleash itself on North America in early 2011. Dubbed “The Finnish Metal Tour 2”, and presented by title sponsor Decibel Magazine, the tour will feature co-headliners Finntroll (Century Media) and Ensiferum (Spinefarm). Additional support will come from Barren Earth (Peaceville), and Rotten Sound (Relapse). The tour will start on January 31st 2011 in Orlando FL, and conclude on March 4th in Raleigh NC.
FINNTROLL have returned with their highly anticipated new slab of folk-rooted metal hymns entitled Nifelvind that is now available everywhere. It was recorded at Sonic Pump Studios (Apocalyptica, Amorphis, Ensiferum) in Helsinki, Finland and mastered by Mika Jussila (Children Of Bodom, Sonata Arctica, HIM) at Finnvox Studios. The album cover artwork was done again by the band’s own guitarist Skrymer and visually captures the true FINNTROLL spirit perfectly. The band toured throughout North America this past April with Moonsorrow and Swallow the Sun. Head over now to www.myspace.com/officialfinntrollin order to stream new tracks and view their tour itinerary.
Finnish folk metallers ENSIFERUM released their 4th album “From Afar” on September 8, 2009 via Spinefarm Records. The CD was produced by Tero Kinnunen (Nightwish, Amorphis) and Janne Joutsenniemi, who produced the band’s previous offering, Victory Songs and mixed by Hiili Hiilesmaa (HIM, Sentenced, Amorphis). Ensiferum completed their first headline tour of the USA this past November with Blackguard and Swashbuckle. Visit the band’s MySpace page: http://www.myspace.com/officialensiferum to check out tracks, and view the latest tour dates and news as it becomes available.
Ensiferum bassist Sami Hinkka had this to say about the upcoming tour: “Greetings from the north our brothers and sisters of the new continent! The time has come to unite forces with our fellow countrymen and raid your cities with unforeseen power. The amount of alcohol consumption on this tour is going to be horrifying, so don’t forget to bring your drinking horn! Grab your swords and hold them high with pride and join the ultimate metal event of 2011. Folk on!”
Tickets for the tour will be available starting August 17th, 2010 via an exclusive internet presale on www.enterthevault.com. British death metal act IGNOMINIOUS INCARCERATION have been forced to cancel their headlining European tour with Detroit deathcore destroyers AND HELL FOLLOWED WITH after the bands’ tour van crashed.
After a strong start to the tour, a few of the shows in mainland Europe fell through with promoters, so the bands had decided to head back to the UK to continue with the tour there and add some more shows.
Whilst driving through France on their way back to Calais, the van carrying the members of both IGNOMINIOUS INCARCERATION and AND HELL FOLLOWED WITH was involved in a crash on the motorway. All members are thankfully alive and well, although some had to be taken to hospital for injuries such as broken bones.
IGNOMINIOUS INCARCERATION bassist CHRIS BALL comments:
“Hey guys, sorry the tour got cut short but due to a major incident we are unable to do any shows for a while, we are all ok and still going strong. Up until the incident we had been enjoying the tour and have made some great friends in the process.
“We will be back as soon as we’re all 100% fit enough to take to the stage again. In the mean time just keep your eyes and ears peeled for us hitting the studio at some point and new tour dates. Thanks.”
AND HELL FOLLOWED WITH guitarist KYLE McILMURRAY describes the incident:
“Basically we were making a late night drive back to the UK when we nicked a semi truck and got sent like a pinball down the freeway. Most of us sustained minor injuries compared to the guys in Ignom… Thankfully we’re all alive. We’ll take back pain over death any day.
“The injuries and damage were so intense that we were forced to cancel the remainder of the tour and head back home. We are so thankful to have had such a great time with the guys in the other bands and play the shows that we did. Words cannot describe how bummed we are that we didn’t get to finish it up. We’ve never backed out on a tour like this.. But unfortunately it was out of our hands.
“Now that we’re home with our families and safe we’re going to get ready for the road in September with Suffokate and The Red Shore.. It will most certainly be a banger!” Read the rest of this entry »

JAGERMEISTER ANNOUNCES FALL MUSIC TOURFEATURING SLAYER AND MEGADETH WITH SPECIAL GUEST ANTHRAX
LOS ANGELES, CA – August 17, 2010 — Jagermeister, the brand known for decades of involvement with rock and metals bands, continues to own the concert circuit with the announcement of the 2010 Fall Jagermeister Music Tour, North America’s biggest thrash tour in 20 years with the 1991 original “Clash of the Titans” lineup – Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax. The brand’s 17th Music Tour will bring three of the hardest hitting metal bands in the world to one stage and will feature complete performances of Slayer’s much lauded Seasons In The Abyss album from 1990, Megadeth’s landmark 1990 album Rust In Peace, and the return of Anthrax’s singer Joey Belladonna. The tour kicks off September 24 and will play 20 venues across the nation.
“I’ve been working with Jagermeister since 2004 to try to make the first Jagermeister Music Tour Trifecta happen,” said guitarist Kerry King of Slayer. “I always have such a killer time on the Jagermeister Music Tour, and this time we’re coming through with Megadeth and Anthrax so you know everyone will be on the top of their game for these shows.” Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine adds, “It is a rush to finally be a part of the Jagermeister Music Tour!”
“Slayer has been a long time friend and supporter of the brand,” says Bill Henderson, Senior Vice President Marketing and Advertising at Sidney Frank Importing Company, Inc. “Jagermeister has been sponsoring them since 2001 and named them as headliner of both the 2003 and 2004 Fall Music Tours. It is great to work with them again and know that adding Megadeth and Anthrax to the program will make this a tour to remember.”
In the beginning, when there were no blueprints, no set paths, no boundaries or steps to follow, SLAYER assaulted the world with its new hybrid of metal and punk. Heavier, faster and darker than the rest, Slayer – guitarists Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman, vocalist/bassist Tom Araya, and drummer Dave Lombardo – set the new standard that all others continue to follow. And that has continued through to 2010. Revolver, SPIN and Metal Hammer have all named Slayer “Best Live Band.” Esquire presented them with an Esky Award. They’ve got two Grammys, a Kerrang! Hall of Fame Award and multiple Revolver Readers’ Poll Awards. For this fall’s Jagermeister Music Tour, Slayer’s Tom Araya promises “no ballads, no acoustic numbers, no slow tempos.”
For the past two decades, Megadeth’s storied career, including more than 20-million worldwide sales and eight Grammy nods, has not only set standards in hard rock and metal, but defined them. Megadeth’s signature shredding and rousing lyrics have drawn fans in since the band’s beginnings, and are the very things that keep them interested, excited, and of course, head-banging, at every turn. Founding vocalist/guitarist Dave Mustaine, a NY Times best selling author who was the recipient of the first annual Golden God Award at the inaugural Revolver Golden God Awards in 2009, is renowned for his ability to use the vehicle of music to shake things up, to make a point and to rattle your brain, literally, figuratively and sonically, which he did with 2009’s ENDGAME, which received some of the highest critical accolades of the band’s already impressive career. The band’s fourth album, Rust In Peace, saw the band cement their status as one of the most important metal bands with masterpieces like “Hanger 18″ and “Holy Wars…The Punishment Due.”
With worldwide sales in excess of 10-million, Anthrax, who along with Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth, is credited with originating the thrash genre, is about to celebrate its 29th year as a band, and continues to be one of metal’s all-time great acts. Over the band’s career, Anthrax has received multiple Gold and Platinum albums, multiple Grammy nominations, and a host of other accolades from the press, industry and fans. Earlier this year, Anthrax announced that vocalist Joey Belladonna, an essential part of Anthrax’s lineup from 1985 to 1992, was rejoining the band, and has taken his place onstage this summer as Anthrax has joined Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth – The Big Four founding members of Thrash – as co-headliners of a series of Sonisphere Festivals in seven European cities. Plans are for the “classic era” Anthrax to write and record a new album for a 2011 release.
The Jagermeister Fall Music Tour will feature Jagermeister custom prizes from tour sponsors Schecter Guitars and Peavey Electronics. In addition, Jagermeister will be hosting nightly text-to-win giveaways including Tap machines and other branded POS. Giveaways are subject to state and local laws and participants must be of legal drinking age or older. The Jagermeister Fall MusicTour will be produced by Synergy Global Entertainment, Inc.

– A New Era of Corruption on vinyl
WHITECHAPEL’s latest release, A New Era of Corruption, entered Billboard Magazine’s Top 200 Chart at #43 in its first week of release. A New Era of Corruption also debuted at #2 on the Hard Music Core Stores Chart, #3 on the Independent Albums Chart, and #5 on the Hard Music Albums Chart. In addition to breaking the charts in the states, A New Era of Corruption also charted in Canada coming in at #70 on the Current Albums chart, #9 on the Indie chart, and #8 on the Hard chart. A New Era of Corruption marks the band’s 3rd full-length album and 2nd for Metal Blade Records. Check out what press has had to say about the band’s latest, and to date greatest, release A New Era of Corruption, which the group co-produced with infamous metal producer Jason Suecof at Jason’s Orlando, FL based Audiohammer Studios:
“while there’s a familiar sense of disgust spewed all over this third album, there’s been some evolving back at the deathlab. It’s easy enough to play fast and hard in death metal – easier still to make that all you do, but as Devolver’s ceremonious opener builds intensities, leveling the blows with a calculated malice for maximum damage, the band sound deadlier than ever.” 8/10 Decibel Magazine
“Say what you like about the way death metal has evolved, but to deny that Whitechapel are both insanely heavy and technically dazzling would be churlish petulance. They hinted at this level of bone-powdering brutality on their first two albums, but have slipped into a higher gear for their third, more than justifying their status as one of the few bands snapping at the heels of Job for A Cowboy… overall this is the sound of Whitechapel maturing and realizing their own considerable potential, with much precision, power, and simplicity.” 8/10 Terrorizer Magazine
“The band presents a truly mixed palette with progressive asides, tempered harmonies and arrangements that take surprising yet complimentary avenues… Whitechapel now appear unconcerned with all-out heaviness, in its place they have sampled the breadth of their genre creating a metal record both balanced and deep.” Rock Sound Magazine
“Sharp guitar melodies and serrated hooks augment the brawn without diluting it, and this new side of the band adds a superb twist to their already well-established fury.” 3/4 Kerrang! Magazine
“a sound so thick you could bite into it… Whitechapel are leading the next generation of extreme.” Metal Hammer Magazine
“Every band has their signature album. Slayer has Reign in Blood, Cannibal Corpse has Vile, Pantera had Cowboys from Hell. A New Era of Corruption is Whitechapel’s masterpiece.” 5/5, TheNewReview.net
“A New Era Of Corruption is more complete and more focused… Whitechapel has become the Behemoth of deathcore.” MetalReview.com
“a deadly, lumbering and ultimately trend-free beast” Noisecreep.com
“What Whitechapel will put out this year is nothing short of some of the grimiest metal sludge to ever breach the Billboard chart, a three-guitar wall of sound bolstered by vocalist Phil Bozeman’s rasp.” Albuquerque Journal
“Corruption, venom and hatred. Tons of blastbeats. Stomach-churning guitar riffs. It’s kind of shocking that the new Whitechapel is better than their last, namely because This Is Exile was amazing.” The Hartford Advocate
“there is no getting away from the fact that, as far as modern death metal goes, there are no better exponents of this breakdown laden mayhem than this triple-guitar monster.” Planet-Loud.com
“The band’s new album, A New Era Of Corruption, is eleven songs of being pummeled in the face with an iron pipe.” CraveOnline.com
Slovenian Thrash Kings NEGLIGENCE reveals track listing and artwork for 'Coordinates Of Confusion'!
Slovenian Kings of Thrash NEGLIGENCE have revealed the artwork and track listing for their new album Coordinates Of Confusion!
Coordinates Of Confusion has been mixed by Ruzz (drums) in their own Negligence studio in late spring of 2010 and was mastered at West West Side Music in New York by Alan Douches.
The band comments, “We’re stunned by the result of the mixing and mastering and can’t wait for you metal heads to hear it!”
Coordinates Of Confusion track listing
1. Mind Decay
2. Screaming Fear
3. Addicted To Aggression
5. The Way To…
6. Insane Asylum
7. The Q Box
9. Shark Attack
10. Coordinates Of Confusion
Coordinates Of Confusion will be released October 12th, 2010 in North America.
NEGLIGENCE was formed in 2000 by Dyz and Jey, two excellent Slovenian guitarists who shared the same passion for music and decided to start working together. They soon found a proper and stable line-up and played lots of shows in their homeland Slovenia including a gig at the infamous Metal Camp festival. Between 2003 and 2005 they also released three untitled demos.
2005 marks a turning point in the history of NEGLIGENCE when they parted ways with their old singer and presented the 15-year old Alex as their new frontman. The band gathered a bigger fan base and in 2007 NEGLIGENCE independently released their debut album Options Of A Trapped Mind. The album opened many new doors for the group and got a good reception amongst metal fans and received great reviews worldwide. Following the release, the band went on to promote their album supporting some of the biggest acts in metal, such as Exodus, Forbidden, Heathen, Sadus and Death Angel among others.
At the end of 2009, long-time member Dyz parted ways with the band but was still part of the production for the second album. NEGLIGENCE have recently found a second guitar player – his name is Aljo – who will help increasing the sheer power the band is able to deliver on stage!
“The “Einhärjar” music video was recorded in July 2010, directed by Richard Moneus, the driving force behind the production company 1897. It was shot in an old dirty barn at a location just outside where we live. Spending what felt like ages in the old dusty room was well worth the sweat and blood. After the barn battleground, Richard took care of the hard work to cut, edit and piece it all together in a functioning symbiosis. Now, viewing the final result we are extremely proud of how good this video turned out. Hell yeah, Richard!”
‘Fi’mbulvintr’ was recorded in March and April of 2010 in Varberg, Sweden at Andy LaRoqcue’s (King Diamond) Sonic Train Studios. Andy also engineered and co-produced the album.
‘Fi’mbulvintr’ track listing:
1 – Intro
2 – Einhärjar
3 – Vämods Tale
4 – The Last Journey
5 – Never Will You Know of Flesh Again

KING OF ASGARD took form in 2008 by founder Karl Beckman (ex-Mithotyn) after dissolving his latest musical projects. Teaming up with long time absent fellow worker, Karsten Larsson (Falconer, ex-Mithotyn). As a result, after years apart, the decision was made to go back to their roots both musically as well as heading for their Norse heritage in lyrical approach. In late 2009 J. Albrektsson joined the ranks on bass to strengthen the line-up further.
San Francisco Bay Area thrash legends, DEATH ANGEL, were recently used in a psychological study that shows liked and disliked music are equally disruptive to serial recall. The disliked music in the study… the song “Thrashers” by DEATH ANGEL. Dr. Nick Perham explained his reasoning by using DEATH ANGEL as the “disliked” music in the study:
“We needed a track that most participants would say they did not like. Having been a fan of metal music since my teens, I was pretty confident that a thrash metal song would do the trick as most people never seemed to like the music I liked. In choosing a thrash metal song, I needed a song that was heavy but also allowed the listener to hear many of the different components of the song – the acoustical variation between the successive sound items. We chose ‘Thrashers’. Participants were only allowed to participate in the study if they disliked thrash metal as a musical genre.
Personally, I have been a fan of DEATH ANGEL since The Ultra-Violence’and saw them at the Bristol Bierkeller around 1990 supporting the Act III album.”
For decades research has shown that listening to music can alleviate anxiety and depression, enhance mood, as well as increase cognitive functioning such as spatial awareness. However, until now, research has not addressed how we listen to music. For instance, is the cognitive benefit still the same if we listen to music whilst performing a task, rather than before it? Further, how does our preference for a particular type of music affect performance? A new study from Applied Cognitive Psychology shows that listening to music that one likes whilst performing a serial recall task does not help performance any more than listening to music one does not enjoy.
The researchers explored the ‘irrelevant sound effect’ by requiring participants to perform serial recall (recall a list of 8 consonants in presentation order) in the presence of five sound environments – quiet, liked music (e.g., RIHANNA, LADY GAGA, STRANGLERS and ARCADE FIRE), disliked music (the track ‘Thrashers’ by DEATH ANGEL), changing-state (a sequence of random digits such as ‘4, 7, 1, 6’) and steady-state (‘3, 3, 3’). Recall ability was approximately the same, and poorest, for the music and changing-state conditions and the most accurate recall occurred when participants performed the task in the quieter steady-state environments.
Lead researcher Nick Perham explains: “The poorer performance of the music and changing-state sounds are due to them containing lots of acoustical variation the order of which impairs the ability to recall the order of items, via rehearsal, within the presented list. Other tasks and processes that also require the ability to retain order information in the short-term via rehearsal, such as mental arithmetic, may be similarly affected by their performance in the presence of changing-state, background environments.”
Although music can have a very positive effect on our general mental health, music can, in the circumstances described, also have negative effects on cognitive performance. Perham remarks, “Most people listen to music at the same time as, rather than prior to, performing a task but to reduce the negative effects of background music when recalling information in order, one should either perform the task in quiet or only listen to music prior to performing the task.”
