haarp TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM ‘THE FILTH’ ON NOVEMBER 23RD, 2010

October 19th, 2010
by Celtic Bob

New Orleans heavy metal act haarp’s brand new album, The Filth, to be released on November 23rd, 2010 on HOUSECORE RECORDS. The Filth is produced by label owner Philip Anselmo. With several DIY releases to their name, their debut full length album for HOUSECORE RECORDS, The Filth is an ugly, oppressive journey into heavy metal. Famed artist and tattoo master PAUL BOOTH is credited for the amazing album artwork for the new record.

On August 27th, 2005, two of New Orleans’ extreme metal bands, manic grind freaks rat in a bucket and black metal blazers De Capa Preta, were slated to play a show at the now defunct Dixie Taverne in the heart of Mid-City.  Due to ‘inclement weather’ and the threat of Hurricane Katrina making landfall, the bands decided that since many people were evacuating the city, the show could not go on.

Hurricane Katrina struck and devastated the Gulf Coast region and effected many aspects of people’s lives. The music scene in New Orleans was not spared from this change and many bands, including rat in a bucket and De Capa Preta, suffered members departing the band, and ultimately calling it quits.

Keith Sierra Jr., drummer from rat in a bucket, and Grant Tom, guitarist from De Capa Preta, got in contact with each other from their temporary locations and discussed the state of the music scene. After digging up old conversations and ideas they had discussed at various local shows, they decided to return to New Orleans and start a new band.  This new band would approach music from a new direction from the speed and chaos of their respective previous bands, and focus more on mid-tempo and slower music.  The immediate choice for vocalist was Shaun Emmons of rat in a bucket, who shared the varied and eclectic musical tastes of Keith and Grant. Several tryouts later, Ryan Pomes of Milktoast joined the group and finalized the lineup as bassist.

“To call haarp “slow” would be somewhat fair, but to say that they’re just “another slow band” would be sacrilege,” states label owner Philip Anselmo. “Their music is crushing, resolute, dramatic and conceptually insane.  If critics are going to try and lump them into any one genre, than they’d better put the crown on haarp’s collective heads once it’s picked.  This ain’t Doom Metal by any stretch. haarp makes playing halftime sound like an original idea all over again.  This music is essential.”

haarp is:

Shaun Emmons- Vocals
Grant Tom – Guitar
Ryan Pomes – Bass
Keith Sierra – Drums

“a masterful control over the multi-faceted Cradle Of Filth sound; brutal vocal gymnastics, skull-rattling double-kicks, symphonic flourishes, dramatic narrative and balls-out axe-slinging all make their presence known, but in a manner which routinely serves to bolster the coherency of the greater whole…this fucking slays.” (9/10)

CORROSION OF CONFORMITY Reunion – “We’re Gonna Try To Get Back Together And Get The Four Piece Going; Deliverance With That Same Lineup”

October 18th, 2010
by EvilG

DOWN guitarist Pepper Keenan spoke with Elliot Levin from Examiner.com recently about a number of topics. A few excerpts from the chat follow:

Examiner: When does North America get to see Down play live again?

Pepper: “That’s a good question. Right now we’re working on new material, so we’re trying to keep up more of a brisk pace, once we get some new shit out. We’re moving backwards towards the NOLA sound, go-for-the-throat kind of shit. We’re not putting too much time into the production of it, like the last two records we did. Which I enjoyed doing, but now it’s time to go backwards a little bit, have some fun. So maybe this summer.”

Examiner: I recall reading recently that you’re thinking of releasing say a four song EP, and then hitting the road.

Pepper: “Well it’s more than a four song EP, but we’re talking about finally getting this thing together, I don’t wanna go into any detail yet, but it’s going to be pretty massive. The first EP will be the first section of a whole big deal we’re working on. It’s gonna be fucking nuts.”

Examiner: The original line up of CORROSION OF CONFORMITY is out on tour right now, what’s your take on that?

Pepper: “I think it’s a bunch of shit.”

Examiner: You’re not happy about it?

Pepper: “No, no, no. I mean, we want to do something again, it’s just I was so busy with Down and those guys had an opportunity as a three piece which is cool because some of the Animosity stuff people were asking about, and now with (drummer Reed) Mullin back in the band we’re gonna try to get back together and get the four piece going (with Woody Weatherman on lead guitar and Mike Dean on bass), Deliverance, with that same lineup.”

Examiner: So you’re going to let them ride out this tour and then everything’s back to normal?

Pepper: “Yeah, that’s what we’re talking about. They’re gonna do a recording of some of the songs they wrote, which is cool, hell I’ve been doing Down shit. So hopefully we’ll get that shit wrapped up and get back out there, we don’t have a record deal or nothing, but we got a shitload of interest that want to see CoC out there, it’s just kind of a matter of getting all our ducks in a row.”

Former WHITE ZOMBIE Bassist Discusses Upcoming Book

October 18th, 2010
by EvilG
Sean Yseult - I'm In The Band

Sean Yseult - I'm In The Band

Art critic Brian Sherwin recently conducted an interview with former WHITE ZOMBIE bassist Sean Yseult. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Brian Sherwin: Sean, you were one of the founding members of the band WHITE ZOMBIE — and played bass in the band for over decade. Needless to say, WHITE ZOMBIE was very successful. I understand that you plan to release a book, titled “I’m In The Band”, that contains tour diaries, a collection of photos, and other information that details your years as a member of WHITE ZOMBIE. Can you tell us about the book and your motivation for writing it? For example, is part of the motivation to give credit where credit is due as far as the band lineup is concerned?

Sean Yseult: That is a huge part of the book — I actually reconnected with almost all of the past members of WHITE ZOMBIE and asked them to write a piece to go in the book. Whether that was their first impression of WHITE ZOMBIE, their experience within the band, or a few funny tour stories, it was entirely up to them.

I not only want to give credit where it is due to all of the band members who contributed in one way or another, but also to all of the people who helped us along the way — I have pages written by our first record producer, Daniel Rey, our first guy that booked us in the East Village, Steven Blush, our A&R guy who signed us to Geffen, the list goes on.

Part of my motivation in creating this book was hearing from our fans once our box-set came out — they were very upset upon opening it up to find not one liner note or note of reference about the band at all. When we broke up we disappeared, there was no farewell or fanfare, no chance to connect with our fans one last time. The box-set should have been our final word to the fans, but it said nothing.

When I started looking through all of the boxes of WHITE ZOMBIE things I had saved — photo albums, tour diaries, back stage passes, etc., so many memories came back and I felt like I had quite a story to tell, with quite a lot of visuals on hand to illustrate it. Having started off as a photo major in art school, I almost always had a camera around, so I have photos of us from day one until the very end!

Brian Sherwin: Speaking of WHITE ZOMBIE, I understand that when the band started to reach mainstream success you made the decision — or at least brought it up to Rob Zombie and the other members of the band — that it was vital to move from New York to Los Angeles. If my sources are correct it appears that said move was the best move for the band financially at the time and also secured the band from being dropped from Geffen — which may have put the band back at square one, so to speak. Thus, one could say that if you had not had the intuition to instigate that professional leap the band known as WHITE ZOMBIE may have not been as known as it is today. It was a pivotal decision. That said, how deeply involved were you with the direction of the band both creatively and professionally?

Sean Yseult: We were all deeply involved in the direction of the band creatively and professionally at the time, it was all four of us living together, living, eating, breathing and sleeping WHITE ZOMBIE. Rob and I made all of the decisions creatively and business-wise, but we were really a band, especially when we wrote music. This was up until and during “La Sexorcisto” being released.

While we were touring that record for two and a half years — Rob and I broke up. At that point he started making decisions without consulting me or J., as in getting a hired hand to write techno tracks, then having me and J. try to riff over them — not the most inspiring way to write! This went down for a couple of soundtrack songs, and was a drag. With the next full album, “Astro-Creep”, some of these extra techno tracks are there but more artfully worked into our songs, and I don’t mind it as much.

Brian Sherwin: Not to dwell on your years in WHITE ZOMBIE — but I must ask the following. As a fan of the band I must say that I was kind of thrown off when remix albums were released. The trendy dance tracks did not really mesh well with the underground grit that one expects from a band like WHITE ZOMBIE — it kind of took away from the visual and musical feel of the group in general. It left me thinking, “Where the hell did that come from?” I won‘t deny that the CD I had was donated to Goodwill. Please don’t take offense — but did you have any direct involvement with that choice at all? Considering what you have already said — what did you think of that direction in general?

Sean Yseult: Take offense? Are you kidding? I was disgusted by that, and have never even listened to it. Super Sexy Swinging Bullshit! I had nothing to do with that. I don’t even remember being informed of it to be honest. Management probably thought it was a good idea to cash in, but had to have had Rob’s approval at the very least. Rob seemed to like dance and techno, he kept trying to take us in that direction and went full on when he did his own solo record — I think this is pretty obvious upon listening.

Former W.A.S.P./METAL CHURCH Members Join Forces In W.A.S.

October 16th, 2010
by EvilG
W.A.S. (Where Angels Suffer)

W.A.S. (Where Angels Suffer)

Chris Holmes (guitar; ex-W.A.S.P.), Randy Piper (guitar; ANIMAL, ex-W.A.S.P.), Steve Unger (bass; ex-METAL CHURCH), Rich Lewis (vocals; ANIMAL) and Stet Howland (drums; ex-W.A.S.P.) have teamed up in new band called WHERE ANGELS SUFFER (W.A.S.). The group’s debut album, Purgatory, is scheduled for release on October 31st via Digital Nations.

Purgatory tracklisting:

‘Cardiac Arrest’

‘Can’t Stop’

‘Don’t Wanna Die’

‘Crying Eagle’

‘Unnatural High’

‘Judgment Day’

‘Zombie’ (CRANBERRIES cover)

‘Lust’

‘Violent New Breed’

‘Morning After’

‘Eye of the Storm’

‘Boom’

Audio samples are available at this location.

According to a press release, Where Angels Suffer will embrace their metal history while simultaneously astounding their fans with groundbreaking original songs that could only be created by the exceptional chemistry and passion these professional musicians discovered when they came together again.

Piper, an original member of W.A.S.P. along with Chris Holmes and Blackie Lawless, helped create the sound that took the band’s first two records to gold status. “I play from the heart!” Randy says.

Randy’s credit to heavy metal can not be summed up very easily as he is continually embarking on creative pursuits and is still very much a part of the metal scene. “You can’t go back, but you can definitely move ahead,” he says.

Holmes has etched out a stellar career which can be traced back to the early days of the metal scene that infiltrated L.A. and the Sunset Strip. A California native himself, Holmes is also well known for his role in The Decline Of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years and other projects, both in film and music, having played with the “A” list of metal musicians.

Piper and Holmes, who were an essential part of W.A.S.P., have stayed in close contact and feel now is the perfect time to launch the much-anticipated project fans have been waiting for.

Longtime drummer of W.A.S.P., Howland was featured on ten albums (studio and live) and has toured with all the top metal acts, including BLACK SABBATH, a personal highlight during his W.A.S.P. years. Aside from W.A.S.P., the ever-active Howland’s resume includes TEMPLE OF BRUTALITY, RUN 21, KILLING MACHINE, BELLADONNA, BLACKFOOT and LITA FORD, just to name a few. Howland resides in Florida, where he has a recording studio to keep him busy on a variety of projects, including his newest one, a reality show that will be filmed at his home and studio.

“We’re going out and were rocking,” says Howland, who sees Where Angels Suffer as an opportunity to bring some great musicians together and make some “real music.”

Steve Unger, who played with Metal Church, is a talented bassist in his own right: his contribution to Where Angels Suffer completes the dynamic of the band. Grateful for the opportunity to play on the project, he and the other band members have a mutual respect for one another because of the unbelievable talent of each artist involved.

Unger, who comes from Seattle, Washington, has had a long career with Metal Church and has been a key contributor to their success over the years. He believes this album will be one of the best culminations of talent the metal scene has seen in a long time. Unger commented that the music is so relevant today because it is “a high-bred cross-breed between old and new.”

Lewis, a longtime friend and fellow musician of Piper and Holmes, was a natural choice for Where Angels Suffer frontman and has become a key component to this venture. He has played alongside many greats artists, including his current bandmates, some of whom where in ANIMAL. He has been compared to greats like Ronnie James Dio, Bruce Dickinson and Lawless, but his signature style has blended with the dynamic sound of his bandmates that sets this album apart from the rest.

Where Angels Suffer is a unification of style, brought together by each band member’s tenacious effort and dedication to bring the fans the music they love. Whether it was the alignment of the planets or simply the right timing, the production of the album and the formation of the band came together seamlessly.

KELLY SHAEFER TALKS ATHEIST, LYRIC WRITING, DEATH FRONT MAN IN NEW INTERVIEW

October 15th, 2010
by EvilG

Earlier this week, Anso DF of MetalSucks unveiled part one of his epic two-part interview with legendary guitarist/vocalist Kelly Shaefer of Atheist and Neurotica. Amongst other topics, Shaefer discussed Atheist’s new album, Jupiter, his lyric-writing process,  locking horns with Death’s Chuck Schuldiner, drugs, the genius of James Hetfield, and how Atheist represents a “different kind of technical metal.”
An excerpt follows:
At this point, it’s a matter of record that the instrumentation of Atheist is amazing, right? Adding a confrontational personality throughout the lyrics serves to elevate Atheist to an even higher plane. It’s like chocolate on ice cream. Or fresh raspberries in cereal. Better!

[laughs] You know, there was a question poised to me 20 years ago: “How is this music going to survive?” And my answer was always that people need to learn how to play their instruments. That’s probably an easy statement to make, but it was something I felt really strongly about. In order for extreme metal to make it as a valid genre of music that would have classic qualities to it 20 years later, it’d have to up the level of musicianship. And that’s exactly what happened. And 20 years ago, I didn’t think we’d make it here and people would still be talking about this music now.

You can see that in the early career of Chuck Schuldiner [of Death] — very basic, very simple, with more of a shock factor than instrumentalism. As the story is told, Death gets a lot of credit for being one of the bands that broke into technical metal. Purists and people who were there back in the day know that that’s not necessarily true. I give him all the credit in the world; Chuck is the godfather of Death Metal, without a doubt. So in order for the genre to survive this far, if anybody needed to turn and introduce more musicianship into their band, it was Death. They had so much influence on all the young bands coming up. So by Chuck recognizing that musicianship would be key, it became easier for fans to accept bands like Atheist. I love Chuck for that. I love the fact that he finally got it. But if you look back at the old magazines, he was not a fan of Atheist at all. We had many, many verbal confrontations at Morrisound Studios and through magazines. His argument was always that jazz has no place in metal. “Those guys [in Atheist] don’t even listen to metal,” he used to say.

Really? Is that true?

Oh my god, yeah! He says all that then gets Paul Masvidal and Sean Reinert [both of Cynic] in his band. So his opinion changed. That’s okay. I don’t chain him to that in any way. He was smart enough to recognize it. He never admitted that he was wrong, but the music admitted he was wrong, from Human on. He knew to go get the best musicians. That was most important — not the guy with the most evil hair, or the biggest upside cross, or the guy who watches the most horror movies. He fucking got Gene Hoglan, Paul Masvidal, Steve DiGiorgio, Sean Reinert … all these guys who could play their asses off. So I tip my hat to him for that.

X Japan Clue Up North American Tour

October 15th, 2010

X Japan - Left to Right: Sugizo, Toshi, Yoshiki, Heath, Pata

X Japan - Left to Right: Sugizo, Toshi, Yoshiki, Heath, Pata

X Japan, the biggest rock band in Japan, wrapped up its first-ever North American tour last weekend with an SRO show at New York’s Roseland Ballroom.  Over the course of the seven dates, all played at theatre-sized venues, X Japan easily demonstrated why they’ve sold 30-million units and filled the 55,000-seat Tokyo Dome a whopping 18 times.  X Japan hadn’t played venues this small in more than 20 years, so they tailored their “stadium-sensibility production” to the theaters, bringing in everything from lasers to pyrotechnics to CO2 to a jumbo screen.

If you missed seeing the band this time, they will be back, as 2011 will see a full-on North American tour as well as the release of X Japan’s debut album – with lyrics in English.

Read what some of the press had to say about X Japan’s North American tour, below…

L.A. Weekly:
“X Japan is a stadium band…as such, they treated The Wiltern as though it were Dodger Stadium.”

Time Out Chicago:
“X Japan is a master of epic metal on the other side of the world.  [Vocalist] Toshi screams right up there with the banshee hell ranks of Al Atkins and Bruce Dickinson. Yoshiki is his classically trained pianist and warrior drummer.  And together, with the help of a trio of guitarists, X Japan possesses a call-and-response fury infused with operatic mayhem.”

Examiner New York:
” X Japan put on an arena-quality show.”

SF Weekly:
“All it took was one show to make it very clear why X Japan is such a phenomenon in its homeland.  Many rock bands have lost the drama and theatrics that was the hallmark of the rock concert.  Clearly X Japan gets it.”

Hollywood Reporter:
“X Japan is bringing spectacle and excitement back to music – and the band proved it is a force to be reckoned with.”

Rockstar Weekly:
“Toshi, much like Freddie Mercury or even Geoff Tate of Queenscryche, is one of the most amazing singers you’ll ever get to hear live.”

Chicago Sun-Times:
“The most impressive aspect of X Japan’s show is the quality of musicianship.  Principal songwriter, drummer and pianist Yoshiki’s classical training came gushing out when he took a seat at the clear-case grand piano for the power ballad “Endless Rain…guitarists Sugizo and Pata traded grinding riffs and lightning leads on songs such as “I.V.” and “Jade” that even American metal bands would find hard to tackle.”

Metromix New York:
“Everything about X Japan is massive.  What other rock show nowadays features lasers, violin solos (of “The Star Spangled Banner,” no less), a cavalcade of power chords, and drum solos?”

Consequence of Sound:
“Fans like this hardly exist anymore – at least in rock ‘n’ roll.  People preoccupy themselves so much with what’s hip these days that they lose sight on why they listened to music in the first place.”

Lithium:
“As energetic as the fans were, I felt the band was the obvious winner in the ‘who is having more fun’ category, a point driven home as they all posed for multiple photos FOR THEMSELVES at the end of their performance on the front of the stage with the Massey Hall crowd in the background.”

AOL/Noisecreep:
“The X Japan live experience is meant to be seen in the space of a sports arena, but just after a couple of minutes, you felt like you were watching them a few miles away — at the Los Angeles Staples Center.”
