MARIONETTE recently performed a special farewell show for departing vocalist Axel Widén (ZOMBIEKRIG) at Sticky Fingers in Gothenburg. Fan-filmed high quality video footage of the song “HateLust” taken from the show can be viewed below.
WHOLE LOTTA LOVE: An All-Star Salute To Fat Chicks
Veteran Quiet Riot drummer Frankie Banali and guitarist Alex Grossi are the newest recruits to the upcoming tribute album “WHOLE LOTTA LOVE: An All-Star Salute To Fat Chicks.” Each lends their talent to a unique interpretation of the title track, originated by Led Zeppelin in 1969. Offering a new twist on the familiar classic, Alex provides a nuanced lead while Frankie brings his trademark Zeppelin sensibilities to the drums, making this the first time the two have appeared together on a studio recording. The track was arranged and produced by Paul LaPlaca(Chris Caffrey, The Great Kat, Zandelle), who also contributes acoustic guitar, bass and additional percussion. All vocals are handled by newcomer Celisa Stratton, a supersized songstress of 6’2″ and 400+ lbs. A big, beautiful woman with a big, beautiful voice, she more than embodies the spirit of the album and brings all new meaning to the phrase “Whole Lotta Love.” A sample of the song is now available at the official “WHOLE LOTTA LOVE” MySpace page.
“Since this is a salute to fat chicks, my intention was to make the song sound FAT,” says vocalist Celisa Stratton. “So I changed the key and utilized my full vocal range to create a whole new version of the song. Hopefully in listening to this track, people will see the point of view of a proud fat woman who has a whole lotta love to give.”
“I put much thought into the best way to approach this,” adds producer Paul LaPlaca. “I ended up with a largely acoustic arrangement with lots of hand percussion and some exotic loops. Interestingly, when Alex and Frankie added their parts, it took the song in a completely different direction that still totally worked.”
“It was a lot of fun providing the drum track for ‘Whole Lotta Love,’” comments Frankie Banali. “To bring some authenticity to this iconic song, I brought in a drum kit of the exact specs used on the original ‘Led Zeppelin II’ sessions, right down to the drumheads. While not copying beat for beat, I played drum parts that are in the spirit of the great John Henry Bonham.”
“I was pretty excited to add my guitars to this song, especially after hearing Frankie’s drums,” continues Alex Grossi. “Overall, I’m glad to be a part of this project, paying tribute to fat chicks everywhere!”
Sweden’s SPIRITUAL BEGGARS – featuring guitarist Michael Amott (ARCH ENEMY, CARCASS) and bassist Sharlee D’Angelo (Arch Enemy, WITCHERY) – started working with Apollo Papathanasio (FIREWIND) as a new singer after parting ways with JB (GRAND MAGUS) and finished the recordings of their 7th studio-album at Sweetspot Studio with producer Rickard Bengtsson, who already produced the On Fire (2002) and Demons (2005) albums, and is also known for his work with Arch Enemy, OPETH, etc.
“The new Spiritual Beggars album is to my ears some of best stuff I’ve ever done with this band and I’m very much looking forward to releasing the seventh Spiritual Beggars studio album, Return To Zero, with the help and expertise of the InsideOut team! At the end of the day it was a no-brainer to do a new licensing deal with the InsideOut label, they did a great job on the Demons album and the Live Fire! DVD (2006). Since then, they have merged with the Century Media company whom I have a long and successful history with. I already know a lot of the people that will be involved in this release, and that feels good.” says founding member Michael Amott. “I respect InsideOut label boss Thomas Waber for being a true music fan and for his undying enthusiasm and efforts in making this deal happen.”
Also Thomas Waber (IOM) is really happy about re-signing a deal with Spiritual Beggars and welcomes the band again to the InsideOut roster. “We had a great experience with the Demons album and are looking forward to working the new one as well. After all the turmoil last year, things are back on top and better than ever and Spiritual Beggars will no doubt benefit from this!”
The new album, Return To Zero, will be released on August 30th in Europe. In an interview with the Japanese Burrn! Magazine Michael Amott talks about the new singer Apollo and the new album and gives a short impression of how the album sounds like “Apollo’s influences are very much rooted in the classic rock and metal of the 70s and 80s. He is the same age as the rest of us in Spiritual Beggars so we instantly shared a lot of common ground musically, and he really connected with the songs and delivered emotional vocals that really impressed us all. I was always aware of the fact that he is great singer. However, even I was surprised how well his voice fit Spiritual Beggars, in the new and the old songs. Apollo is showing a range and depth on this album that I believe will both surprise and please the Spiritual Beggars fans! The new album has a lot of the typical Spiritual Beggars trademarks, it’s heavy rock with a 70s atmosphere – but I also hear a definite progression and a deeper sense of melody in the songwriting and performances. It’s exactly the kind of record I wanted to make with Spiritual Beggars in 2010!”
On the Spiritual Beggars official MySpace page, the band uploaded a short audio sample of the new album as a pre-listening.
Spiritual Beggars lineup:
Michael Amott (Arch Enemy, Carcass) – Guitars
Ludwig Witt (Firebird) – Drums
Per Wiberg (Opeth) – Keyboards
Sharlee D’Angelo (Arch Enemy, Witchery) – Bass
Apollo Papathanasio (Firewind) – Vocals

Metal Mind Productions presents the complete discography of one of the best and most influential prog-metal bands of the 80’s – Crimson Glory. The exclusive 5 CD box entitled “In Dark Places… 1986 – 2000” contains all of their studio albums: “Crimson Glory”, “Transcendence”, “Strange And Beautiful”, “Astronomica” (2CD). The box also includes bonus tracks, such as songs taken from singles, videos, live or demo tracks plus a 60 pages booklet. All recordings are remastered using tube technology. Box is limited to 1000 numbered copies and is a must-have for all fans of the band as well as for the lovers of the progressive metal genre! Crimson Glory’s origin reaches the 80’s, when the band emerged with a dazzling combination of early Queensryche style, fascinating guitar melodies and distinctive, emotive vocals. The line-up, consisting of Ben Jackson (guitars), Jon Drenning (guitars), Jeff Lords (bass), Dana Burnell (drums) and Midnight (vocals) recorded two albums – Crimson Glory and Transcendence, both bringing the band a large number of devoted fans. The unique musical mixture, followed by a characteristic image (all band members wore silver masks) marked the beginning of a prog metal legend. But the band did not wish to be captivated in only one musical style. With their third album, Crimson Glory reached far beyond simple power metal musicianship, replacing it with complex, precise songwriting, controversial both in sound and structure. Strange and Beautiful turned out as an epic musical experience, filled with elements borrowed from prog metal, as well as blues and hard rock. For some fans the band explored far too commercial regions, but others greeted Crimson Glory’s evolution enthusiastically.
Unfortunately, after the release of their third LP the group stepped down from the scene for six years. It wasn’t until 1997, when Jon Drenning and Jeff Lords decided to reunite Crimson Glory. Ben Jackson’s return was a great start to the process; however it was soon clear that this trio will be the only remaining members of the original line-up, as vocalist Midnight was at that time not interested in recording a new album. Drenning, Lords and Jackson had a tough decision on whom to set as a replacement for the charismatic singer. The final choice was Wade Black, whose vocals sounded much more powerful and aggressive, brining a totally new quality to Crimson Glory’s music. After adjoining ex-Savatage drummer Steve Wacholz the band was ready for a definite comeback. In 1999 Astronomica saw daylight. The album proved the band’s great form, being both a nod to the past as well as updated for the present, retaining some of the classic guitar harmonies with a slightly more dynamic approach. Although soon after its release Black left the band to front Seven Witches and Leash Law, Crimson Glory did not cease to exist. On May 2010 the band announced that a new singer, Todd La Torre, had joined the band. La Torre made his first (and as yet only) public appearance with Crimson Glory at ProgPower USA X as one of seventeen guest performers paying tribute to Midnight, the band’s original singer who passed away in 2009 The band is currently working on their new material.
Metal Mind Productions will release “In Dark Places…1986-2000” on 23rd August in Europe and 5th October in USA (via MVD).

Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons of KISS fame have issued the following statement in the wake of legendary rock manager Bill Aucoin’s passing.
“Bill Aucoin, our irreplaceable original manager, mentor and dear friend has died of complications arising from his ongoing battle with prostate cancer. He was instrumental in guiding us from the beginning and without his vision, leadership and unending dedication, we could never have scaled the heights we have reached. Bill loved life and lived it to the fullest. Words can never convey his impact on us or those close to him.
Over all the years, he never missed an opportunity to be with us at our shows near his home or fly in for special concerts, including our most recent Madison Square Garden show. He had hoped to attend our London show earlier this month but his illness prevented it. He still planned to visit us upon the start of our upcoming U.S. tour.
We loved him, told him and have peace that he knew it. We will grieve and celebrate all he was and did.
We have lost a part of us.”
Following is the official press statement on Aucoin’s passing:
William Aucoin, beloved record industry executive, manager, entrepreneur, and creative visionary, passed away this morning, Monday, June 28th at 9:11 AM (EST) at the Aventura Hospital and Medical Center in Aventura, FL.
Born December 29th, 1943, Bill was battling prostate cancer, and passed away from surgical complications.
The man known for masterminding the career of the world-renowned group KISS, Bill Aucoin also managed STARZ, TOBY BEAU, BILLY SQUIER, BILLY IDOL, and numerous other artists.
His most recent venture is Aucoin Globe Entertainment, which he founded in 2007 (www.aucoinglobe.com). In its three years, Bill and his company developed bands in the US and around the world.
He leaves behind his boyfriend of fifteen years, Roman Fernandez, and two sisters Betty Britton and Janet Bankowski.
A foot soldier leading the infantry of hardcore, Hatebreed’s Jamey Jasta has been belting out sing-along anthems of rage and alienation with his Connecticut based crew for over 15 years. Touring relentlessly, Hatebreed have played all over the world, delivering their patented brand of breakdown-inflected metalcore to the masses and influencing countless minions along the way. One would think Jasta, a self-confessed “workaholic”, would have his platter loaded to the brim with metallic duties concerning the ‘Breed. One would be wrong.

The Godfathers of Swedish modern metal, SOILWORK, have uploaded the track “Deliverance is Mine” to their Myspace page (www.myspace.com/Soilwork). The song comes off their new album The Panic Broadcast, which is set to be released on July 2 (EUROPE) and July 13 (N. America) via Nuclear Blast!
Rotting Corpse Records recording artists, Cyanosis, have announced the departure of bassist Kirk “Tony” Kangas. Replacing him is Andy Scheeler (ex-Silent Scream/Master Fury/Atomic #9).
Commented guitarist Scott Zwieg: “Like most bands that are about to record an album, losing a bass player and seeking a replacement is never a pleasant experience. However, in our case, it couldn’t have happened at a better time. Andy was looking to play, so after some E-mail exchanges we brought him out and after rehearsing one song with him, we knew he was a perfect fit.”
Vocalist/guitarist Al Andrews added: “Andy is an old friend, and long-time supporter of Cyanosis. He has given us shows with Monstrosity and Macabre, and radio interviews when he was program director of WIPZ Radio, at UW Parkside in Kenosha. I wish nothing but the best for Kirk in his future endeavors, but Andy is a monster on bass, and precisely what was needed to make Perpetuation of Eradication as sick and pummeling as possible.”
Cyanosis is currently in pre-production for their Rotting Corpse Records debut album, Perpetuation of Eradication. Artwork for the release can be viewed below.
Tentative song titles for the album include: “Maimed (Beyond Recognition)”, “Exsanguinate”, “Farewell to the Flesh”, “Pleasure in Torture”, “Glutton for Punishment”, “Reduced to Pulp”, “Skin Suit”, “Disinterred”, and a re-make of the Accidental Suicide classic, “Morbid Indulgence”.
The band has also announced that it will be performing at Midwest Heshfest II on September 4th in Milwaukee, WI in support of the new album’s release.
Polish prog metallers VOTUM recently confirmed their appearances at this year’s edition of the Metal Hammer Festival in Poland alongside Katatonia, Opeth, Pain Of Salvation, Riverside and headliners Korn (with one band still to be announced). The event will take place on August 27 at Spodek Hall in Katowice.
VOTUM formed in Warsaw in 2003. The band will unleash their second full-length, Metafiction, in the US on August 3 via Armoury Records. At once dark, somber and beautiful, Metafiction was recorded at the famed Izabelin Studio in Poland and is a seven-track concept album that focuses as much on the music as it does the lyrics and visual art surrounding it. VOTUM’s concern is not of the particular style of music they play but rather the atmosphere pouring from within. For fans of Opeth, Porcupine Tree and Anathema.
“…Metafiction is a progressive musical puzzle. A puzzle to a psychotic search. A mindgame; look for the pieces, connect them together and write the ending of the story.” – Power Of Prog Blog
