METAL-RULES.COM Does SXSW 2010

May 5th, 2010
by Robert Williams

sxsw-2010.jpg

SXSW or (South by Southwest) is an interactive, music and film festival based out of Austin, Texas. Now in it’s twenty third year and being one of the largest festivals of it’s kind, SXSW welcomes over 2,000 performers annually at over 90 different venues over the course of four days in March. The last several years have welcomed some amazing performances from classic metal favorites like Metallica and Motorhead. There was a Scandinavian metal showcase several years ago that featured Enslaved and 1349. In 2008, the Swedish power metal commandoes known as Sabaton made their North American debut and most recently, in 2009 Steel Panther broke out of the Sunset Strip long enough to conquer the popular festival. At this year’s event, Motorhead returned to perform two seperate concerts and promote "Lemmy The Movie" the upcoming rockumentary focusing on the charismatic and iconic Motorhead frontman. Michael Monroe (ex-Hanoi Rocks) debuted his new touring lineup with several showcase appearances and legendary Canadian thrashers Voivod triumphantly headlined the Relapse Records showcase that also featured Tombs, Brian Posehn and Graves of Valor.

Mathias "Vreth" Lillmåns, vocalist for the Finnish folk metal band Finntroll

Interview and live pics by Kyle Moore, The Metal Magnus

I had the opportunity to interview Vreth, vocalist of the acclaimed Finnish folk metal band FINNTROLL, before the show started.  Because there was a large crowd of people backstage, we had to conduct the interview on the staircase leading up to the stage, and after a time the interview was cut short by the opening band starting their set. Nonetheless, Vreth was a pleasure to speak with!

OPETH Interview with Fredrik Åkesson
and Mikael Åkerfeldt

Interview and live pics by Kyle Moore, the Metal Magnus

I had the opportunity to speak briefly with Frederik after Opeth’s 20th anniversary show in New York City. While I was told I’d only be seeing Frederik, Martin was also in the room hanging out, and a couple minutes in, Mikael walked in to answer some questions too!

Anvil – Steve “Lips” Kudlow & Robb Reiner

April 22nd, 2010
by Arto Lehtinen

Anvil Logo.gif

Interview with Steve "Lips" Kudlow & Robb Reiner

Interviewed by Petri Da Costa

The band Anvil, formed in the late 70’s in Canada by vocalist/guitarist Steve ‘Lips’ Kudlow and drummer Robb Reiner, had a glorious start releasing a string of three unforgettable classic metal albums: ”Hard ‘N’ Heavy”, ”Metal on Metal” and ”Forged in Fire”. With these three albums the band made a name for themselves and had even an influence in the early thrash scene, people like Tom Araya, Scott Ian and Lars Ulrich have already spoken about how impressed they were with Anvil. What happened next, from the mid 80’s until a few years ago, most people don’t know, the band somehow "fell under the radar" for many. The band never stopped, even with label or line up changes or problems with management. Steve ‘Lips’ Kudlow and Robb Reiner never gave up on their dream, and all this perseverance and passion for the band that they formed was one of the many ingredients for the success of ”Anvil! The Story of Anvil” (released in 2009), one of the most talked about and well received documentaries ever made.  So I asked ‘Lips’ and Robb about the band’s current situation and plans for this year and the future.

Cyprus isn’t maybe that well known for its metal bands, however, here is an interview with the excellent act Winters Verge that come from Cyprus. I hooked up with the lead singer of Winter’s Verge George Charalambous to talk about their amazing second album TALES OF TRAGEDY, the past, the present, and the future of the band. The band has recently been out on tour with Stratovarius on the first leg of their European tour. This band is one of the new up and coming stars within the heavy metal scene. So remember where you read about Winters Verge first.  :)

Grenouer – Singer Andrey ‘Ind’ and guitarist Alexander ‘Motor’

Grenouer

Singer Andrey “Ind” and  Guitarist Alexander “Motor”

Interviewed by: Anders Sandvall

Promo pictures provided by Grenouer

 Grenouer 1_1.jpg

Grenouer is a Russian act that’s fairly unknown to the western world. When I heard their latest album LIFELONG DAYS I was stunned by their amazing way of playing their industrial/death metal. The band started out playing thrash metal at the beginning of the 90’s so it’s hard to put Grenouer into just one musical label. Listen and you will find out what I’m talking about. However, I felt obligated to share Grenouer’s amazing music with the rest of the world because these guys deserve recognition. I think you can all agree that it’s fun to hear from a band from an “exotic” land as Russia. Here is what me, singer Andrey “Ind” and Alexander “Motor” the guitarist talked about.

FINNTROLL / MOONSORROW – The Gramercy Theater, New York, NY, April 8, 2010

FINNTROLL/MOONSORROW

Words and pictures by Kyle Moore, the Metal Magnus

The Gramercy Theater – New York, NY

April 8th, 2010

Finntroll / Moonsorrow

Having spent the previous evening being enchanted and thoroughly worn out by none other than Opeth, I wondered if I would have enough energy for Finntroll, who ranks very high amongst my all-time favorite bands. There’s something about the marvelously bizarre Trollish shtick and polka melodies of these Finnish madmen that I find unreasonably captivating. I’ve been hooked since their second album of bouncy priest-devouring tunes, JAKTENS TID, and their newest effort NIFELVIND overwhelmed me with their most creative, heaviest music to date. But before Finntroll could take the stage, three bands I was unfamiliar with had sets to perform.

OPETH: Terminal 5 – New York, NY / April 7, 2010

OPETH – Evolution XX

Words and pictures by Kyle Moore, the Metal Magnus & Sara Roggensack

Terminal 5 – New York, NY

April 7th, 2010

There’s the entire world of heavy metal in all its genres, evolutions, and extensive devolutions…and then there’s Opeth. The one band in all the world that embodies the essence of extreme metal while simultaneously eclipsing all confines of genre. Upon my first hearing of Opeth, I remarked “how can something so ugly be so beautiful at the same time?” Even outside their native realm of death metal, they have no peers or equals. The weakest album they ever released still stands leagues beyond the efforts of most, and no album of theirs can be called anything short of amazing. I shamelessly admit that Opeth is my favorite band, and that frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt is my personal musical idol, so my excitement was beyond containment when I learned they were performing a special 20th anniversary concert in my backyard. I’ve seen them in concert six times already, but I already knew this would be something beyond an ordinary show. In a statement, Opeth said that they would perform their breakthrough album BLACKWATER PARK in its entirety, followed by a second (yes, a second set!) digging deep into their back catalogue.
