OLIVER/DAWSON SAXON – Graham Oliver and Steve Dawson

November 3rd, 2009
by Marko Syrjala

odslogo3.jpg

GRAHAM OLIVER and STEVE DAWSON

In 1979 when the classic NWOBHM band SAXON was formed its ranks consisted of five members, singer Biff Byford, guitarist Paul Quinn, guitarist Graham Oliver, bassist Steve Dawson and drummer Pete Gill. Now, thirty years later only Byford and Quinn remain under the SAXON banner. However, Oliver and Dawson have since joined together to carry on their part of the SAXON legacy. First, in 1996, under the name SON OF A BITCH, with Pete Gill on drums, and later, mainly to appease the promoters, as OLIVER/DAWSON SAXON. Read on to learn, straight from two founding members of SAXON, about the various stages in the history of one of the most celebrated metal bands to have emerged from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, and the falling apart, piece by piece, of its classic lineup through the years.

QStock Festival 2009, Oulu Finland

October 26th, 2009
by Brat

Qstocklogo2009.jpg

24 & 25 July 2009

Regulars of my reports will remember me as a dedicated Wacken Open Air fan who loves the atmosphere, the metal friends I have made, the diversity of bands performing and the whole experience of ‘Metal Mecca’. Over the years I have been able to cope with the discomforts of survival style camping and weather extremes, but last year I broke off my love affair when Wacken reached record crowd numbers making it mostly impossible to see what was happening on stage clearly without the help of screens and time consuming to move from one stage to another. The introduction of an outdoor movie theatre outside the festival area to cope with the increased crowd was a joke.

The thought of spending another three expensive days carrying around six kilograms worth of camera equipment, writing notes and trying to take photos of bands I couldn’t see anyway had me vowing not to return to Wacken for the 20th anniversary.

Being an obsessive compulsive list writer, I started compiling a calendar of European metal festivals when I returned to Australia and as line-ups were announced this year I started sorting through the festivals with either my favourite bands or bands on my live wish list. As it turned out, this year was mostly about seeing bands on my live wish list and those bands were playing Finnish festivals–perfect. I was traveling alone this year so I was happy that I was going to a country where I feel 100% safe and at home even though the language is quite beyond this tri-lingual girl.

I was on the train to Oulu a couple of days after flying into Helsinki. The 5-hour trip was made enjoyable by picturesque Finland. There’s isn’t a part of this country that isn’t a shade of green and coming from Australia it was a nice change to the shades of browns and reds associated with our landscape. For most of the journey I had my face pressed hoping for my first glimpse of the local fauna on this trip–the roadkill squirrel outside my Helsinki hostel didn’t count.

Jalometalli 2009

October 20th, 2009
by Arto Lehtinen

bandtaulu2009_c.jpg

The Jalometalli Open Air Metal festival has gained its status as well as place on the Finnish festival map. Although there are plenty of metal oriented festivals arranged all around in Finland, the Jalometalli festival has found its own style and approach in the metal festival offering in Finland. It doesn’t rely on the current hot names on the market like Volbeat and so on, instead the festival offers a more interesting line-up mostly consisting of old school thrash metal and of course death and black metal by having bands which have either never or rarely visited Finland. Especially several 80s thrash metal legends such as Whiplash, Agent Steel have never been seen on the soil of Finland. Now it is about time. Therefore the Metal-Rules.com team made a real assault at Jalometalli by witnessing plenty of killer bands and seeing the general atmosphere and here is the result.

Crimson Cult – guitarist/keybordplayer Guenter Maier

October 12th, 2009
by Anders Sandvall

crimson_cult_logo_1.jpg

Crimson Cult is a German act that has released its debut album this year. I had a short talk with guitarist/keyboard player Guenter Maier about this new band. Maier and bass player Alex Hilzensauer were members of the band Stygma IV before they formed Crimson Cult and this interview concerns both Crimson Cult and their brand new debut but also a look back on what Maier has done in the past.

Interviewed by: Anders Sandvall

Thanks to Christine Stephan at Dockyard1 for help with making the interview possible

Thanks to Pinky at Agentur Digital for the promo pictures of the band. All promo pictures are taken from the band’s homepage.

Lars Chriss of Lion’s Share

Interviewed by Alan Gilkeson

Since the release of DARK HOURS earlier this year, there’s been a slow and steady build up for Lion’s Share around the world. Recently inking a distribution deal in Russia and their video for ‘Judas Must Die’ appearing on ‘The Headbangers Ball’, the Swedish trio seem poised to bring their metal to the masses as word of their unique brand of US influenced Power Metal spreads across the world. Recently, founder and guitarist Lars Chriss answered some questions for Metal Rules.

SATYRICON – Satyr

October 10th, 2009
by Robert Williams

Satyr of Satyricon

Interview conducted by Robert Williams

Videography courtesy of Sandra Torres

Satyricon is presently in the midst of their second US tour of 2009; having previously been through the States this past January as a support act for Cradle of Filth and now headlining dates this fall in support of last years "The Age of Nero" album. Speaking with frontman Satyr about the current tour; it becomes evident that tensions abound due to poor promotion for the current trek. Nevertheless, the band delivers steadfast an intense career spanning set this night in San Antonio that featured two encore performances. As the show lets out; the skies in San Antonio have let loose a torrential down pour of rain and in the midst of all this; eager sharpie-wielding fans were delighted to find Satyricon drummer Frost ushered to a nearby table set up under the shelter of a tin roof, for him to meet and greet fans of the band. All of this immediately following his near two hour Olympian, drumkit-pummeling live assault. I caught up with Satyricon mainman Satyr and had the chance to talk to the man himself about "The Age of Nero" album, the bands headlining performance at Norway’s "Inferno Fest" black metal gathering, touring with Pantera and the offstage debauchery that surely followed, and of course…the idendity of the naked blonde chick from the "Mother North" video.

Primal Fear

Sept. 13 2009, Foufounes Électriques, Montreal, Canada

Review by EvilG

Photos by  Steve Sanders

pamela_primal.jpg

(Note: I didn’t have a photo pass for this show, and I didn’t realize that the venue would just let us chumps take a camera inside to take pics…otherwise I would of taken my own. However, thanks to Steve who attended and graciously gave us permission to use these photos)

When Primal Fear announced that their only Canadian stop on this leg of their 2009 tour was Montreal, it was a no-brainer on whether we’d attend or not. Primal Fear have been one of my favorite bands for a long time so the anticipation and expectations to see them live was running extremely high. I had seen Primal Fear just one time before way back in 2001 on their NUCLEAR FIRE tour stop in NJ, USA which was (I think) their first time in North America.
