January 24 th 2010

Review and pics by Orchidee Stachelig

This winter in Ukraine turns out to be extremely cold, but it doesn’t scare bands and their fans – quite a lot arrived to the second part of the third “Slovyansky Rok” (Slavic Rock) festival. The event is a part of a project with the same name which includes not only the fest itself, but releasing of the “Slovyansky Rok” collection of music and publishing of a magazine with the same title.

Paul Di’Anno

Interview conducted by Robert Williams

Filmed by Carlos Llanas / Edited by Sandra Torres

After seventeen long years; "The Beast" finally has returned to the United States to perform live in concert once more. After last year’s headlining tour was cancelled before it even began; anticipation and confirmation of the first scheduled gig for this current "30th Anniversary Tour" held many longtime Paul Di’Anno fans in a state of suspense. Upon word that the legendary vocalist of the first two Iron Maiden albums had in fact made it onto American soil; due in no small part to Dallas based music-immigration attorney Matt Gallagher, it looked as though this time it was finally going to happen, and I’m really happy to report that it did.

Backing up Paul on this current tour is the American traditional heavy metal band Icarus Witch; who are also doing double duty, playing a short set of original material before joining Paul on-stage for a best-of setlist comprised of the first two Iron Maiden albums and various high spots from Paul’s illustrious back catalog.

Speaking to Metal-Rules.com; Paul took the time to chat about future touring plans, a follow up record to "The Living Dead" what it was like to work with the German thrash metal band Destruction on the track "Alliance of Hellhoundz" and his memories of the early days…

ACE FREHLEY

INTERVIEW AND LIVE PICTURES BY MARKO SYRJÄLÄ

Ace Frehley is best known as an original member and lead guitarist for KISS. In the early days of KISS, Ace created his Spaceman persona including the famous Spaceman makeup. Ace also designed the original KISS logo and later on he created his unique stage theatrics like the smoking guitar and another guitar with a rocket launcher that shoots rockets. Ace started his musical  career in the late 60’s and played with such bands as Four Roses,  The Exterminators and Milemo before joining KISS in 1973. Kiss became one of the most successful bands in the 70’s. Albums like: ALIVE! , DESTROYER. ROCK AND ROLL OVER and LOVE GUN sold millions of copies worldwide and became instant classics.

Ace departed with KISS in 1982 and soon after he formed his new band called Frehley’s Comet. This band released its self titled debut in 1987 followed by LIVE + 1 EP and SECOND SIGHTNING in 1988. Ace decided to drop the Frehley’s Comet moniker and issued 1989’s TROUBLE WALKIN’ under his own name. The KISS reunion took place in 1996. The original lineup:  Ace, Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons and Peter Criss announced The Alive/Worldwide tour which became one of the most successful tours ever in rock history. The reunited KISS issued its new studio album PSYCHO CIRCUS in 1998 followed by another world tour. In year 2000 band announced its “Farewell” tour and Ace did his last KISS performance in the closing ceremony of the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City.  Ace returned to the limelight with his new solo band in 2007. The new band: Ace, Anthony Esposito (ex–Lynch Mob), Scott Googan (Ex-Brides of Destruction) and Derrek Hawkins started touring in late 2007. The new Ace Frehley album ANOMALY was released in September of 2009 and Ace announced another world tour to support his latest release. Ace and his band arrived in Finland in early December 2009 to play a sold out show in Helsinki and then I had a chance to sit down with the Spaceman himself and discuss ANOMALY and various other subjects. Hope you like it!

FRACTURE POINT

Ben Rosputni and Matt Hobart

Interview by Erich Heintzelman

Back before Christmas I was able to interview Matt Hobart and Ben Rosputni from the Phoenix, Arizona band Fracture Point.  Fracture Point is a Death/Thrash metal band that is making some noise in the underground with the album INHERIT THE DOWNFALL, which was released on an independent label.  The music is technical and bludgeoning and the guys gave me some insight behind the making of the album, their favorite tracks, and what the future holds for Fracture Point. If you have not heard them yet, check ‘em out!

ANVIL

Anvil Band Pic.jpg

 Interview conducted by Robert Williams

Videography courtesy of Sandra Torres

Thirteen albums into their career; Canadian heavy metal veterans Anvil have finally been on the receiving end of some much deserved attention, brought on in part by the hugely successful documentary "Anvil: The Story of Anvil". With the re-release of 2007’s "This Is Thirteen" album this past September through VH1-Classic Records, the band finds themselves back out on the road for Anvil’s first headlining tour in more than a decade. From the second they hit the stage the band’s mission plan seems transparent, to bridge the barriers between the band and their fans. Anvil vocalist and guitarist Steve Lips Kudlow announces from the stage that following tonight’s show he is going to come out later and shake everyone’s hand in the club. The packed audience seems to hang on every word of Lips’ in between song banter tonight. It is clear that many in attendance have seen the recent documentary and can relate in some way to the band’s struggle to attaining success. All three members of Anvil took the time prior to taking the stage to talk metal with metal-rules.com; detailing their current cross country trek, the upcoming "Juggernaut of Justice" album, what it meant to work with famed producer Chris Tsangarides once again and more…

From Hell’s Heart – Comedy in Metal (Jan 2010)

January 31st, 2010
by Aaron Yurkiewicz

COMEDY METAL

Jan. 2010

FHH.png

An extremely rare, but high profile sub-set of Metal releases are comedy albums. A few rare bands decide to release and record albums of metal that are strictly based on humor. Are these parody acts loving tributes or a tongue in cheek, kick at a genre that at times takes itself very seriously? Are these bands worthy of the definition of metal for bringing a new face to the genre, or to be shunned for crude and mean-spirited attempts to make fun of something they don’t understand? Metal comedy. Worthwhile or worthless?

J. ALONSO – DAWN OF TEARS

Dawn of Tears

INTERVIEW WITH J. ALONSO FROM “DAWN OF TEARS” Interviewed by Kyle Moore (The Metal Magnus)

Dawn of Tears is a relatively new Spanish melodic death metal band that is deserving, yet long overdue for some real publicity in the metal world. Comparing their sound to other bands doesn’t serve them properly; their distinguishing mark is their ability to write a killer song, while seamlessly blending musical influences from all over the metal spectrum without breaking a sweat. Here’s my interview with vocalist J. Alonso.

Jimmy DeGrasso – Alice Cooper, Hail!, F5, ex- Megadeth, Y&T, Suicidal Tendencies

Jimmy DeGrasso

JIMMY DeGRASSO

INTERVIEW AND LIVE PICTURES  BY MARKO SYRJÄLÄ

TRANSCRIPTION BY PETTERI LIMNELL, EVILG AND RICK

American born drummer Jimmy DeGrasso is probably best known for his work with Megadeth, but he’s also been involved with many other interesting bands and projects during his long career.  In mid 80’s, after moving from Pennsylvania to Los Angeles, Jimmy first did studio sessions with the “Prince of Darkness” himself, Ozzy Osbourne, before getting his first permanent job from Californian rockers Y & T in 1986. After many successful years with them, Jimmy decided to leave Y & T in 1990 and in the subsequent years he toured with such names as Lita Ford and Alice in Chains before joining the thrash/punk/hardcore crossover  group Suicidal Tendencies in 2004. Unfortunately, the band broke up soon later and next Jimmy joined Alice Cooper’s touring band. He’s been working with Alice on and off since then. In 1998 he joined Megadeth and stayed with them until the band (temporarily) disbanded in 2002. Today Jimmy is a highly sought after session and touring drummer.  He’s also a full time member of all-star band “HAIL!” along with his former Megadeth bandmate David Ellefsson, Sepultura guitarist Andreas Kisser, and vocalist Tim “Ripper” Owens. Jimmy has also another band with Ellefsson called F5 and they released the album THE RECKONING in 2008.  In  December (2009) Jimmy came to Finland with Alice Cooper and then I had a chance to sit down with him and discuss his past, present and near future plans. READ ON!

Toxic Holocaust / Axegressor : Nosturi Helsinki

January 18th, 2010

The 26th of November

Nosturi Helsinki Finland

The success of Toxic Holocaust fronted by Joel Grind has increased massively during the recent  years. Especially the younger generation of thrash metal have found Toxic Holocaust nothing but a killer thrashing combo as a plenty of young looking kids with old school t-shirts and pants attended the gig at Nosturi. Seeing the young generation thrashing and moshing is definitely a good sign for the whole metal genre. Before Toxic Holocaust unleashed a metallic maelstrom the domestic thrashers Axegressor hit the stage to command the kids to go berserk.

Rob Bolger – A Film Maker of “Behind the Suit and Tie” documentary

January 18th, 2010
by Metal Rules

ROB BOLGER:

DOCUMENTARY MAKER OF "BEHIND THE SUIT AND TIE"

Interview by Luxi Lahtinen

"About BEHIND THE SUIT AND TIE documentary: A documentary that takes you into the hearts and souls of the real people who rule today’s heavy metal recording industry, put together by Robert Bolger Jr.

Unlike most music documentaries BEHIND THE SUIT AND TIE will spend more time with the people behind the labels rather than the more musician-focused approach of most music documentaries. BEHIND THE SUIT AND TIE will also showcase the truth of how the music industry is being affected by the downward spiral of hard CD sales and how established, new and up and coming artists must learn to adjust to these changing times with today’s major transition".

Rob Bolger talks more about this ambitious project of his in this interview, so be sure to read everything he has to say about making this documentary to understand a little bit better about the hard times that the record industry is facing these days when downloading music from the internet for free has become a true pain in the ass for the whole music business.

VoiVod – Live In Montreal, Canada

December 12, 2009 Club Soda

Live Review and pics by Geneviève Hamel

VoiVod live in Montreal

10 years! That’s what it took to Voïvod to play a headlining concert again in their adoptive hometown of Montreal! That’s quite long but it’s not that unusual in this case, the new momentum achieved by the return of long-departed singer “Snake” to the fold at the beginning of this decade was stopped by the premature death of founding member and riff-master “Piggy” in 2005.
