PRIMAL FEAR – Mat Sinner and Ralf Scheepers

PRIMAL FEAR

Interview with Mat Sinner and Ralf Scheepers

Interviewed by EvilG

Live photos by Steve Sanders / Promo photos courtesy of Frontiers Records

For many years now, one of my favorite bands is Primal Fear. I finally found the time to squeeze in a long overdue interview with bassist Mat and vocalist Ralf on the eve of the band’s return to North America where they will be playing a number of shows throughout the USA and Canada in May/June (2010).  Most of the discussion is about their newest album, the upcoming tour, and the latest news from both Ralf and Mat.

MICHAEL MONROE: Live at Club Tavastia, HELSINKI

April 7th, 2010
by Marko Syrjala

MICHAEL MONROE

Club Tavastia, HELSINKI

1’st of APRIL 2010

REVIEW AND PICTURES BY MARKO SYRJÄLÄ

It’s been about ten years since Michael Monroe last played a solo show in Helsinki.  That’s of course because of Hanoi Rocks rebirth which started in 2001. Hanoi Rocks released three successful studio albums before they decided to disband again in 2009 after a series of sold out shows in Club Tavastia. Unlike his former colleague Andy McCoy, who announced his very short live Real McCoy project almost right away, Michael decided to take to some time before getting  back in action.  In January of 2010 Michael announced his new all star band which included: Ginger from The Wildhearts, former Hanoi Rocks / Demolition 23 bassist Sam Yaffa, guitarist Todd Youth and another former Demolition 23 member Jimmy Clarke. This new band first did a handful of successful shows in the USA before heading back in Europe. They arrived in Finland in late March to play six shows with the renewed line up including New York Dolls guitarist Steve Conte and and drummer Karl Rosenfist.

MEGADETH – Dave Mustaine

April 1st, 2010
by Robert Williams

Interview with Dave Mustaine

Conducted by Robert Williams

Videography courtesy of Sandra Torres

For the first time ever, North American thrash metal fans are witnessing Megadeth’s monumental "Rust In Peace" album performed live in it’s entirety as part of "The Rust In Peace 20th Anniversary Tour". A live in-concert DVD has been filmed already as part of the North American leg of the tour and plans are underway to take "The Rust In Peace 20th Anniversary Tour" to Mexico and South America. With the return of bassist Dave Ellefson rounding out perhaps Megadeth’s strongest lineup to date, this current tour absolutely scorches everything in it’s path and is not to be missed. Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine recently took the time to talk metal with Metal-Rules.com and filled us in on the return of Dave Ellefson, "The Rust In Peace 20th Anniversary Tour", the launch of Megadeth radio as well as his upcoming autobiography.

Theatre of Tragedy / Where Angels Fall / To-Mera / Pythia / The Mariana Hollow – Underworld, London

THEATRE OF TRAGEDY

with WHERE ANGELS FALL

and To-Mera, Pythia and The Mariana Hollow

The Underworld, Camden, UK

14th March 2010

Words by Ben Spencer

Live pictures by James G @ Altercarnated Photography

Theatre Of
Tragedy was a band that reminded me of my long haired, gothic trench
coat wearing youth. Between the ages of 17-18, I was gradually treading
through the gothic genre of music that was originally sparked by
symphonic metal band Nightwish and their CENTURY’S CHILD album. This
album unlocked a genre of music at the time that I was ignorant of and
yet longed to pursue. My journey began with Lacuna Coil, Tristania and  Flowing Tears. One day I came across an album cover where a white
rose lay across a red one with the italic font ‘Theatre of Tragedy’. This
band intrigued me and so I very quickly obtained this album along with
the more cohesive and better produced AEGIS album. My interest in this
particular genre of music desensitised over the course of the next year
and without sight or sound of these guys on music channels, I merely
assumed that their flames had extinguished with the changing of times.
To discover that the band was still around and that their show at Camden
Underworld would in fact be their last was an opportunity I did not
want to miss out on.

Iron Fire – Vocalist Martin Steene

Interview by Theis Rytoft

All promo photos courtesy of www.ironfire.dk

The Danish band Iron Fire has been around for many years and experienced a lot of changes in their line-up. Being the founder of the band, Martin Steene knows all about the upturns and downturns as well as other key aspects. With a new album in the works and optimism for the future maybe the time of Iron Fire will come in the 2010s.

CHTHONIC bassist Doris Yeh

CHTHONIC

Bassist Doris Yeh

Interview and words by HannTu

Promotional pictures courtesy of Spinefarm Records

Chthonic are in the unique position of being one of the most easily recognisable bands in the world of metal, in spite of (or possible by virtue of) being from the metal wastelands of Taiwan. Backed by a major label (Spinefarm Records), the band has taken their fascinating brand of Far Eastern black metal, their image and their country of origin on tour with them, bulldozing stages the world over with aplomb. However, in their own country, they are extremely outspoken and active on the subject of politics, especially where their country’s fraught relationship with the People’s Republic of China is concerned. Here, I speak to bassist Doris Yeh by email, who was recently in London to do some publicity work for the band’s latest album, MIRROR OF RETRIBUTION (incidentally, the lovely Doris was on the cover of the January edition of GQ Taiwan).

Philip Anselmo of Housceore Records, Down, Pantera, etc.

March 31st, 2010
by EvilG

Philip Anselmo of Housceore Records, Down, Pantera, etc.

Interview by Shawn Jam Hill

It was with great trepidation that I picked up the phone at 5:30 PM EST on Wednesday, March 10 2010 because I knew the (supposedly) mercurial Mr. Philip Anselmo himself was on the other end of the line. After spending years fronting one of metal’s greatest bands of all time (Pantera), starting up the lumbering behemoth know as Down, feuding with his Pantera bandmates, losing his best friend Dimebag Darrell to a crazed gun-toting nut in 2004 and subsequently being denied access to the funeral while generally leading a rock and roll lifestyle that famously nearly killed the man, maybe Philip wasn’t too keen on jawing with some nobody journalist way up in Canaduh.

I was wrong.

Speaking thoughtfully (some would say quite slowly) and seemingly choosing his words very carefully, Philip Anselmo spoke as would a true Southern gentleman. He told stories, rambled on a little here and there and even had a laugh or two during our 35 minutes on the horn that was (theoretically) set up to promote upcoming releases on his own Housecore Records imprint. In reality, it was a good old fashioned chin-wag.

From Hell’s Heart – Record Labels? (Feb/March 2010)

March 31st, 2010

From Hells Heart

From Hell’s Heart Feb/March 2010: Record Labels?

Record Labels – Are they relevant in 2010? Do they still serve a useful purpose and provide artists value, or are they the dying remnants of an obsolete model for the distribution of recorded music?

Helsinki Metal Meeting 2010

The annual Helsinki Metal meeting was hold in February on the eve of the cold winter storm coming from the sea. The wind was blowing the area of the Cable Factory when hundreds of people were heading to enjoy the metal offering on the stage and in the exhibition area. Last year the event suffered from the decreased number of visitors. However bigger names pulled the whole cable factory full. Here is the brief article with tons of pics from the HellSinKi metal meeting.
