Candlemass – Leif Edling

Interview and photography by Robert Williams

Candlemass recently embarked upon their first tour of the U.S. in seventeen years playing 16 dates stateside in support of the “King of The Grey Islands” album. The last time the band had toured the United States in 1991 they were accompanied with Texas Doom Metal icons Solitude Aeturnus. < ?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

How fitting it is, that after the bitter split from longtime vocalist Messiah Marcolin, Candlemass returned to the Lone Star state with Solitude Aeturnus vocalist Robert Lowe as the new singer for Candlemass.

The band played a 90 minute set draped in fog and lights that featured a broad repertoire consisting of the vast treasure chest that is the Candlemass back catalogue, and momentarily dipped into last years “King of The Grey Islands” album. There was a small crowd of ecstatic fans and well wishers gathered to see the band in an intimate club setting.

After the concert I had the opportunity to catch up with Candlemass bassist and figurehead Leif Edling and talk metal with him for the better part of twenty minutes. Leif was in an incredibly optimistic mood, given that his past vocalist troubles are behind him, and confident that upon the next visit overseas Candlemass will be playing to a packed house. After the awe-inspiring set from the Doom Metal legends, I would definitely have to agree…

Underground legends NOKTURNEL: Tom Stevens speaks out!

Tom Stevens of NOKTURNEL

Interview by Luxi Lahtinen

Nokturnel-Tom1.jpg

Tom Stevens, originally from East Rutherford, New Jersey, is a true warrior for oldschool thrash/death metal. He formed his first band Savage Death in 1985, did two kinda cult-ish underground demos (MASS GENOCIDE in 1985 and CRUCIFIED IN HELL in 1986) before the band called it quits. After that, it was the time for his second band, Nokturnel, which he formed together with Erik Young and Martin O´Connor in 1989. Two demos (YOU DON´T HAVE A CHANCE in 1990 and WELCOME TO NEW JERSEY in 1991) , one album (NOTHING BUT HATRED in 1993) and one 7-inch EP (ANTI GRUNGE in 1994) later, the band went on hiatus. Steve, however, kept moving on, and was recruited to Incantation for almost 2 years, plus also had some other temporary band activities going on for quite some time (live session slots in both Ripping Corpse and Morpheus Descends – not to forget Brimstone/Exile either, which he recorded BLACKENED REWARDS OF BLASPHEMY demo in 1997 with).

Tom decided to pull Nokturnel out from its icy grave in 1999, having Tophetarath from Fog/Hordes of the Lunar Eclipse handling the drums and Lee Ribera (Death of Millions ) n bass. The band´s second album, titled FURY UNLEASHED, was released through Tom´s own label, Nocturnal Eclipse in 2001, and was relatively well received amongst the fans of true underground thrash/death metal.

Tom and Chad Walls (on drums) are currently working with new material for Nokturnal – and this is where I leave further talking to Tom about the whole history from Savage Death up to the current activities of Nokturnel.

Be sure to read the interview as Tom´s skills as a real storyteller are unquestionable after you have read this lenghty and in-depth interview about him, and about all his bands he has been involved with for in the past years.

Summer has apparently begun in the UK, but I guess someone forgot to tell Mr Rain that. The only thing that could cheer anyone up on that drizzly, cold and windy Thursday evening was a good dose of pure, uncomplicated and cheesy heavy metal. Would the Swedes deliver, or would they fall as flat as the weather did? Read on…

IMMOLATION´s Ross Dolan

 IMMOLATION´s Ross Dolan

Interview by Luxi Lahtinen

Live pictures by Marko Autio

Transcription by David Groves

 Immo10.JPG

The true veterans of US death metal, Immolation, landed their troops on European territory during March-April 2008 on the "Shadows of the Emissaries Curse" tour – also bringing along fellow country mates Goatwhore, Israeli infamous black/deathsters Melechesh and Greek´s Sickening Horror, whose technical and tricky death metal seemed to make a huge impression on many fans who wanted to witness some quality death metal on that particular night of April 3rd 2008 in Helsinki.

Immolation´s 7th album, SHADOWS IN THE LIGHT, has given the Immolation camp more and more death metal muscle, making Immolation one of the last true torch bearers for the old school death metal. If you are yet to hear the album, do yourself a favor and get your hands on it immediately, ok?

I met a smiling and polite Immolation frontman Ross Dolan at Nosturi, Helsinki right after the band had just finished their soundcheck. We sat down, and I let my tape recorder roll during this nice conversation with Ross about the tour, Immolation albums, the friggin´ good old times and so on… ;o)
