The album’s eight songs, written exclusively by Sorceron, contain far more urgency then the band’s previous material, cutting down on snyth and keyboards without depleting their crushing atmospheric capabilities, while adding a more brutal, sinister edge to their attack.

Do you recall the wonder singer who dubbed Mark Wahlberg’s vocal parts in the movie “Rock Star” (2001)? Thats right – Miljenko Matijevic, the Croatian-American main man of Steelheart from Connecticut. The band was acclaimed as one of the finest in early 90s’ hair metal. The two first albums “Steelheart” (1990) and “Tangled in Reins” (1992) overflow with classics like “Angel Eyes”, “Steelheart” and the killer ballad “She’s Gone”. Steelheart dissolved in 1992 after Miljenko getting severely injured on stage by a falling lighting rig. An attempted comeback in 1996 proved abortive, but ten years later Miljenko revived Steelheart for real and released the Led Zeppelin-influenced “Good 2B Alive” in 2008. Now the band makes their Swedish debut – beware of glass-shattering high notes when Miljenko opens his mouth!

Swedish modern metallers SOILWORK – who were originally scheduled to head out this April & May supporting SYMPHONY X – have regretfully been forced to cancel their participation on this upcoming North American tour.

Drummer Dirk Verbeuren has issued the following statement:

“Due to recurring issues with a herniated disc in his lower back requiring a prolonged period of resting and healing, our guitarist Peter Wichers is forced to sit out this spring’s North American tour with Symphony X and Nevermore. We did consider hiring a fill-in guitar player, but we’ve decided to stick together as a band and out of respect for our fans, to cancel our participation in the tour. Our apologies to those of you who were hoping to see us. If all goes well, Peter should be healed and ready to hit the road in time for the summer festivals.”

Debuting at #88 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart the week after its July 2010 release, The Panic Broadcast secured SOILWORK’s highest-charting record in the history of the band and marked the return of original guitarist, songwriter & producer Peter Wichers, whose last album appearance was in 2005.

According to TMZ, former ALICE IN CHAINS bassist Mike Starr died in Utah.

Police tell TMZ Starr’s body was found in a Salt Lake City home today. Cops say they were called to the house at 1:42PM.

Starr appeared on the third season of Celebrity Rehab back in 2009 – and was arrested last month for felony possession of a controlled substance. Salt Lake City cops say he had 6 Xanax pills and 6 Opana (painkiller) pills when he was busted.

Starr was 44 years old.

Mike’s dad tells TMZ, “It’s a terrible shock and tragedy.”

According to The Salt Lake Tribune, police do not suspect foul play.

The medical examiner’s office will likely conduct an autopsy on Wednesday, says Reuters, but the results of toxicology tests could take up to two months.

Starr appeared on Alice In Chain’s most successful albums including Facelift (1990), Sap (1992) and Dirt (1992). Starr later played bass for the band SUN RED SUN, which featured Ray Gillen and Bobby Rondinelli, both former members of BLACK SABBATH. The project was cut short by Gillen’s death in 1993.

AT THE GATES/GROTESQUE Frontman Tomas Lindberg Pens Foreward to ‘METALION: The Slayer Mag Diaries’

March 8th, 2011
by EvilG

Bazillion Points Books is proud to reveal that legendary Swedish death metal vocalist Tomas “Goatspell” Lindberg (AT THE GATES, GROTESQUE, DISFEAR) has contributed a foreword to the upcoming 744-page hardcover book METALION: The Slayer Mag Diaries, by Jon Kristiansen. Lindberg’s connection to Norway’s Slayer Mag dates to the 1980s, when he and Kristiansen were part of a core group of Swedish and Norwegian headbangers during the wild early years of the Scandinavian extreme metal scene.

“Metalion and his Slayer Mag are responsible for me (and a lot of other Swedes) getting into the death metal underground,” begins Lindberg. “I clearly remember how proud I was when Grotesque got a mention in the classic mag-this meant more to me than anything else at the time!”

Part anthology, part memoir, and years in the making, METALION includes over 600 reproduction pages from every issue of Slayer mag, spanning from the early 1980s through 2010. In addition, author Jon Kristiansen recounts his life’s story, from alienated outsider to central figure in Norwegian black metal to world-weary metal survivor. The book also features over 100 rare photographs, including two color sections and a portrait gallery of photographs taken by Kristiansen himself.

“The greatest heavy metal story ever told” will be available June 6, 2011, wherever books are sold, and is available for preorder now with two bonus limited patches from Bazillion Points Books, “America’s smallest but heaviest book publisher.”

OGEN completes work on new album

March 8th, 2011
by EvilG

Hartagga, mastermind of Italian atmospheric black metal project OGEN, has issued the following update:

“We have completed work in the studio, both the recording and mixing/mastering duties are gone. I think the result is way beyond what I expected sound-wise. Producer Daniele Mandelli [FORGOTTEN TOMB, DARK HORIZON] did an incredible job on this album, and thanks to him we are one step closer to get it out there in record time. If you are looking for some inspired, atmospheric metal, then I guess you won’t be disappointed while listening to “Black Metal Unbound”!”

OGEN’s debut EP “Black Metal Unbound” is tentatively due in late Spring via Kolony Records.

At the following link you can see a teaser of the new album including studio shoots:

Polish technical death metal band DECAPITATED continue their work at Radio Gdańsk Studio in Poland recording their Nuclear Blast debut and follow-up to 2006’s Organic Hallucinosis.

Bassist Filip “Heinrich” Hałucha checks in from the studio:

“The sound we’ve worked out for the bass recording is huge, nasty, and crushing.  Thanks to this, we’ve come up with a couple of arrangements where the bass comes out of the background and plays the major part.  I must admit that, with his old school approach, Arek ‘Malta’ Malczewski has fit well in the concept of this album.  His choice of instrument levels was superb – it all sounds mighty yet there’s no mutual interference.  The bass recording took us three days plus an extra day for sound search.  After much deliberation and testing different solutions, we chose a configuration of two amps: a tube Ampeg SVT Classic and a transistor B4R, one of which had huge distortion.  I should add that we did not use any line signals and all the signals come from microphones, which recently has been a rarity as far as bass recording goes in metal music.  Taking into account the ‘no compromise’ approach of Vogg and Malta, it has been undoubtedly the hardest and the most advanced session I have ever participated in.  Tracking lasted from the beginning of a song to its end; ‘copying and pasting’ any parts was out of the question.  Due to this, the session was much more demanding and time-consuming, but the final effect is the music sounding more lively and natural.  Everything has been recorded using instruments only; it’s awesome without all of these digital fireworks – advanced editions, plastic drums, pasted riffs, etc.  It reeks of the old metal spirit.  There ‘s proper metal groove and speed but also a specific vibe which adds up to what this type of music is all about.”

DECAPITATED’s fifth studio album is being produced by Wacek Kiełtyka and sound engineered by Arkadiusz “Malta” Malczewski.  Drums were recorded with Daniel Bergstrand (BEHEMOTH, MESHUGGAH, DIMMU BORGIR, KEEP OF KALESSIN, DEFLESHED), who is also handling mixing duties.  The band will be self-releasing the new album in their native Poland.

DECAPITATED’s line-up includes: Wacław “Vogg” Kiełtyka on guitar, Kerim “Krimh” Lechner (Thorns Of Ivy, Tone Intimacy) on drums, Rafał Piotrowski (Ketha, Forgotten Souls) on lead vocals, and Filip “Heinrich” Hałucha (Vesenia, Rootwater, Unsun, Masachist) on bass.

British thrashers EVILE have been confirmed to play at this year’s High Voltage festival, which takes place on July 23rd and 24th at Victoria Park in London, UK.

EVILE were among the latest bands to be recently announced for the UK’s Download festival, as well as Masters of Rock in the Czech Republic.  The band are now due to perform alongside even more rock legends at High Voltage, including JUDAS PRIEST, QUEENSRYCHE, JETHRO TULL and more.

EVILE bassist JOEL GRAHAM comments:

“It’s awesome to be added to the High Voltage festival – for the name Evile to be on the same poster that contains the such legendary names of Judas Priest, Jethro Tull, Dream Theater and Queensryche is an absolute mind f**k…  It’s amazing.  More than a couple of us in Evile are prog fans so I’m sure we’ll be hanging around the Prog Stage a lot.  For me personally, I became a huge Jethro Tull fan after doing a deal with my father; he agreed to take me to see Anthrax when I was about 11, if in return he could take me to see Tull around the same time, so he got me hooked.  Ol (Drake) also has a very uncanny likeness to a young Ian Anderson, so I’m hoping they bump into each other over the weekend.”

EVILE have also been added to the bill for Masters of Rock in the Czech Republic, where the band will be performing on July 17th.  For more information, go to http://www.mastersofrock.cz

EVILE have also confirmed a UK show with Taiwanese metallers CHTHONIC, which takes place next Friday, March 18th at the Underworld in London.

IRON WILL Begins Recording Debut Album

March 8th, 2011
by EvilG

IRON WILL, the heavy metal band from Boston MA, has entered the studio to record the band’s debut album. IRON WILL’s first official offering will be a concept album entitled “Life Is Your Labyrinth”. The band formed as early as 1999 and has played shows off and on in the Boston area since then but has never released a recording. The band is a side-project of Boston-area metalers RAVAGE, who most recently released their second full-length album “The End Of Tomorrow” on Metal Blade Records in 2009.

IRON WILL features the debut of vocalist Tony ‘The Metal Duke’ Canillas. Tony has long been a fixture in the Boston-area traditional heavy metal scene and is known for his high-energy stage performances and ear-splitting power screams. Eli Firicano and Al Ravage from Ravage handle guitar and drum duties respectively, and the band is rounded off by Rich Berte, of the thrash band Lethal Design, on bass. Drummer Al Ravage describes the band’s sound as “true garage-band metal”. He adds, “The band’s sound is a combination of traditional heavy metal elements from the 70’s and 80’s played by a bunch of guys who just like to get together and bash out metal songs and covers. Most of the stuff was jammed out from improvised pieces and refined off and on in intermitent rehearsals over the last 10 years or so. We have just been playing these songs out of the sheer enjoyment of playing metal – and now we’ve finally decided to make a recording of them and share them with the rest of the metal world. The idea is to keep things raw and primal and fun. Tony is a very unique singer an lyricist and is one of the world’s most ardent metal fans – he could be the bastard son of Ozzy or Halford or both. He has come up with a lyrical concept that is both fantasy-based and auto-biographical and Eli and I are excited to help him realize his musical vision. This music certainly won’t be everyone’s cup of tea – or necessarily anyone’s – but I think that is sort of the point. This is a metal album made for the love of metal, nothing else.”

The record will be self-produced. The band has yet to announce a planned release date or record label.

The proposed track listing for the album is as follows:

1. Conquer On
2. Life Is Your Labyrinth
3. Nemesis
4. The Agony Of Uncertainty
5. Darkness Falls Fast
6. Rising
7. The Shadow Lurks
8. Nightmares
9. Your Legacy Lives On

VENOM Mixing New Album

March 8th, 2011
by EvilG

According to a band update, pioneering UK black metallers VENOM’s new album is currently being mixed and the band’s management and label are in discussions regarding the release date, soon to be announced. The band are again working with top producer Tom Belton at his London Studio.

About the band’s new album, bassist/vocalist Conrad “Cronos” Lant told The Quietus recently that “the new tracks are tremendous. Basically, if you think of the way Antton was playing, especially on the last album Hell, he is a nu metal drummer and comes from that kind of background. He’s hung round Venom most of his life and it was just good to introduce him to the whole Venom concept of playing like the way Abaddon used to play. Basically Abaddon came from a rock background and then basically developed a black metal, speed metal, thrash metal style. The nu metal drumming is very different and it was a steep learning curve for him. At the end of the day he’s got his own style and he wants to be known for what he’s done and not be in my shadow which is totally understandable. Some of the guys we had coming to the rehearsals were not ex-CRADLE OF FILTH but they were still ‘I’ve been in this band, I’ve been in that band’ but they were all far too young, you know. We were looking for someone in their thirties upwards who understood rock music.”
