Memorial For Former ALICE IN CHAINS Bassist Mike Starr Announced

March 13th, 2011

Alice In Chains

Alice In Chains

According to his mother Gayle, the official public gathering/memorial for late ALICE IN CHAINS bassist Mike Starr will be held on Sunday, March 20th at The Fountain (Seattle Center) in Seattle, Washington starting at 4 PM. Details:

According to The Salt Lake Tribune, Mike Starr had addiction problems, but was on the road to recovery and didn’t commit suicide, two of his friends said the day after the former Alice in Chains bassist was found dead (March 8th) in a Salt Lake City house.

Starr, who played bass for the seminal Seattle grunge band from its formation in 1987 to 1993, died nearly three weeks after being arrested by Salt Lake City police on February 18.

“I don’t think this was a suicide,” said Brett Gunn of Salt Lake City, Starr’s Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor. “We had a lot of plans.”

Starr was living in the 1900 block of Richards Street with Spencer Roddan, a fellow musician who had known Starr for several years after being introduced to him by a friend, Travis Meeks (DAYS OF THE NEW). Roddan and Meeks met while in rehab at Utah’s Cirque Lodge Drug Rehab Center in Sundance.

“I don’t think [his death] was intentional,” said Roddan. “Our deal was he had to be clean. He said he was going to make me proud.”

Starr has been living with Roddan for about six weeks. He and Meeks had been making music in Roddan’s basement recording studio. Meeks had booked shows on the East Coast the weekend of March 18, Roddan said, and Starr was going to join him on the road.

Starr had other musical plans, Gunn said. He wanted to collaborate with Gunn’s Salt Lake City band NAZTY HABIT, and had spoken of playing with hard-rock bands P.O.D. and KORN.

Starr appeared on Alice In Chains’ most successful albums including the band’s debut Facelift (1990), Sap (1992) and Dirt (1992). Starr later played bass for the band SUN RED SUN, which featured Ray Gillen and Bobby Rondinelli, both former members of BLACK SABBATH. The project was cut short by Gillen’s death in 1993.

‘British death/thrash metal band Thirteenth Sign are proud to announce that they have a new lead guitarist- Adam Moore. Adam recorded all the solos on Thirteenth Signs close to completion second album entitled ‘Rise of the black angel’ and is currently rehearsing the new material for live shows. ”We considerer ourselves extremely privileged to have Adam as a part of Thirteenth Sign as he is probably the best guitarist we have ever met and has absolutely no ego! His solos on the new tracks are real highlights of the album, guitar fans will be able to hear influences from Friedman, Loomis and Petrucci in his playing as well as his own style and skills.”

‘Rise of the black angel’ will be mixed by the end of March, mastering completed as soon as possible. If plans work out mastering will hopefully be handled by Paul Allender (Cradle of Filth) and released via Battlegod productions later in the year.’

AVANTASIA Confirm DVD Release Date For “The Flying Opera: Around The World In 20 Days”

March 12th, 2011
by EvilG
AVANTASIA: 'The Flying Opera' DVD

AVANTASIA: 'The Flying Opera' DVD

AVANTASIA – founded by EDGUY frontman Tobias Sammet – will release their new double DVD concert film and documentary, called The Flying Opera: Around The World In 20 Days, on March 18th via Nuclear Blast Records. The title will be released in Japan/East-Asia on Avalon-Marquee.

Started only as a studio project, in 2008 Avantasia embarked on a world tour to write heavy metal history. For the first time a giant all-star project like that did not only gather in the studio to record an album, but The Metal Opera went on tour to play to hundreds of thousands of fans all over the globe within just a few weeks.

On March 18th fans will get the chance to relive the experience with the 2DVD package. One DVD will feature a full concert film in stereo and Dolby 5.1, recorded during their shows at Wacken Open Air 2008 and Masters Of Rock Festival 2008, the second DVD contains a documentary, shot by a camera team that followed the giant trek around the globe to give viewers the chance to catch a glimpse of never-before-seen behind-the-scenes footage, interview-material, the start of Avantasia and its history and all the video clips that Avantasia has ever shot.

The limited edition also contains two CDs featuring the concert and many never before seen photos.

Sammet says: “I am so proud of this DVD package and the featured footage, even though it took a little longer to finally complete it. It gives people an idea of what an impact the first appearance of Avantasia on stage had, and you will get an idea of how everything went beyond our expectations and what the roots and the seeds for the current Avantasia tour are. It portrays one year in Avantasia’s history, maybe the most important year in the project’s history because that is when a studio-project became a traveling institution. There are many Metal Operas, but we made it something real, something to take hold of. Something alive…”

Sponsored by Nuclear Blast USA, Decibel Magazine, Amoeba Music L.A. and Dean Guitars, the world’s first-ever film festival dedicated to heavy metal music will be taking place at the Downtown Independent Cinema in Los Angeles, California this coming March 31stthrough April 3rd, 2011.

Organizer and lifelong metalhead Samuel Douek shares an exciting addition to the HEAVY METAL FILM FESTIVAL’s inaugural line-up:

“We are proud to announce that Germany’s BLIND GUARDIAN have submitted a magical, one-of-a-kind, still-in-the-making film edited by Andreas Fiekers called ‘TRAVELERS AT THE EDGE OF TIME’ for a world premiere to debut exclusively at the Heavy Metal Film Festival in Downtown Los Angeles.  The new film speaks to the band’s evolution and how it led them into the symphonic saga of their latest album, 2010’s Billboard Top 200-charting At The Edge Of Time.TRAVELERS AT THE EDGE OF TIME’ will be screened at the HMFF’s special Closing Night event on Sunday at 9 p.m.”

TRAVELERS AT THE EDGE OF TIME (Editor: Andreas Fiekers) Germany 2011:  This documentary follows Germany’s legendary Power Metal band BLIND GUARDIAN through an unfinished cycle of their remarkable career up to now.  Showcasing an intimate insight throughout the massive amount of events the musicians had to face since Summer 2009, the film begins abruptly during the production for their breathtaking opus At The Edge Of Time when the band begins orchestra recordings at the Rudolfinum in Prague.  During the fragile act of creating real music, BLIND GUARDIAN are suddenly confronted with the virtual reality of a computer game called Sacred 2.  While tasting the sweetness of having accomplished one mission, another one immediately starts with dreary rehearsals in the “Twilight Hall” before the band heads off  to spread their mystical message to thousands of enthusiastic bards on another world tour.  We will meet an unmasked Hansi Kürsch, André Olbrich, Marcus Siepen, Frederik Ehmke, and their crew members through the many private on-the-road & behind-the-scenes encounters.  Fans will witness BLIND GUARDIAN take part in their never-ending quest for perfection beyond the musical aspects when cameras follow the band onto different stages from the first indoor shows to subsequent outdoor shows on the “Sacred World and Songs Divine Tour.”  Travelers At The Edge Of Time then takes on a new voyage when the group gets back to the studio and starts working on its lifetime project: the orchestral album.  Both completion of this film project and the touring cycle for the latest album are not yet complete, proving only one thing: There is no real beginning, nor there is a real ending…

In addition to the BLIND GUARDIAN film’s world premiere, “UNTIL THE LIGHT TAKES US” has been added to the midnight screening taking place on Saturday, April 2nd.

UNTIL THE LIGHT TAKES US (Aaron Aites & Audrey Ewell) USA 2009: Until The Light Takes Us tells the story of black metal. Part music scene and part cultural uprising, black metal rose to worldwide notoriety in the mid-nineties when a rash of suicides, murders, and church burnings accompanied the explosive artistic growth and output of a music scene that would forever redefine what heavy metal is and what it stands for to other musicians, artists and music fans worldwide. Until The Light Takes Us goes behind the highly sensationalized media reports of “Satanists running amok in Europe” to examine the complex and largely misunderstood principles and beliefs that led to this rebellion against both Christianity and modern culture.

To capture this on film, directors Aaron Aites and Audrey Ewell moved to Norway and lived with the musicians for several years, building relationships that allowed them to create a surprisingly intimate portrait of this violent, but ultimately misunderstood, movement. The result is a poignant, moving story that’s as much about the idea that reality is composed of whatever the most people believe, regardless of what’s actually true, as it is about a music scene that blazed a path of murder and arson across the northern sky.

Stay tuned for additions to the festival line-up, plus the announcement of the short films section.

Las Marimbas Del Infierno (Marimbas From Hell) by Julio Hernández Cordón will be opening the festival on Thursday evening, March 31st.

The first portion of the maiden line-up for 2011’s Heavy Metal Film Festival can be viewed at the festival’s official site.  Click HERE to download HMFF movie posters (Password: b=8X+6G).

On Thursday, March 10th, advanced tickets to the HEAVY METAL FILM FESTIVAL will be available for purchase via the Downtown Independent Cinema Box Office.  Ticket prices will be as follows:
