Mark Osegueda of Death Angel

Interview by Luxi Lahtinen

On/offstage pictures by Terhi Pihlaja

Much thanks to both Silke of Tough Enough Promotion and Flo for setting up the interview with Mark

Death Angel – among so many other Bay Area thrash metal acts like Testament, Exodus, Vio-lence, Heathen, Forbidden, Defiance and so forth, has come a long way from the times of their monstrously wicked thrash debut, THE ULTRA-VIOLENCE. Many people still consider their best album to dat when the band seems to spend months on tours, just like back in their old days.

It’s been almost 30 years since the formation of the band and Death Angel´s engine is still in excellent shape, just like their energetic live performances have proven for many of us lately. Witnessing Death Angel playing live at Sauna Open Air Metal festival in Tampere, Finland on Friday, 11th of June, simply kicked each and everyone of us fully awake in the venue. These fine Cali-thrashers seem to get better as they age over the years, just like an old wine.

I managed to hook up shortly with the band´s always polite and smiling frontman Mark Osegueda in the dressing room of the band after the show – and naturally I couldn´t help but ask him some details about their 6th studio, titled RELENTLESS RETRIBUTION, which by the words of Mark himself, contains some of  ´the most technical and aggressive´ stuff they´ve ever recorded since the classic ULTRA-VIOLENCE album. Of course the old times weren´t left untouched completely either…

KAMELOT’s Thomas Youngblood On Status Of Singer Roy Khan – “I Know That There Is A Religious Aspect To It Now That I Can’t Really 100% Explain”

March 16th, 2011
by EvilG
Roy Khan - Kamelot

Roy Khan - Kamelot

Jorge Ciudad from Chile’s spoke to KAMELOT guitarist Thomas Youngblood and he confirmed those “religious” rumors about singer Roy Khan and his current situation in the band. Here are a few excerpts from the chat:

Thomas talks about the first Kamelot show with Fabio Lione (RHAPSODY OF FIRE) on vocals, which is going to take place in Santiago de Chile:

Youngblood: “Yeah, it’s gonna be the first show and we are gonna be doing some rehearsals here in Florida before that, of course. But I’ve heard some songs with Fabio, singing some Kamelot songs like Ghost Opera, and he sings quite different than he does with Rhapsody for Kamelot, which also of course makes sense, because it’s a different approach o vocals (…) Obviously, the hi-range that he can do with songs like ‘Centre Of The Universe’ or ‘Nights Of Arabia’… these are songs that we (silence). I think that Roy over the years, his range has dropped!, so a song like ‘Nights Of Arabia’ is no problem for Fabio to sing.”

About the rumor that Khan has simply found religion and the music world is just a distant memory now:

Youngblood: “We love performing, we love touring, and… I don’t know if Roy has lost that, kind of… in his heart, you know? In terms of what he likes doing. I know that there are some other issues. I know that there is a religious aspect to it now that I can’t really 100% explain. Obviously we were disappointed and you know, I’m not gonna lie: I was a little pissed off about it, but at the same time, the whole band together decided ‘listen, we are not gonna slow down! We’ve got this new album and we wanna come to South America.’ The religious aspect is something that I wanna let him to kinda talk about, but I know that he had been going to religion classes for whatever reason, you know? Obviously, over the years of working together, being at times best friends and things like that, we have discussed all kind of topics about religion, so it’s actually very surprising to me that this is where we are at now with him! But really, I don’t really want to talk too much more about it because that’s really something I think that he should come out about, in terms of what he believes or doesn’t believe or whatever.”

About the possibility of needing to find a new singer for Kamelot:

Youngblood: “All I can say is that we are not gonna fire him, that’s not my position and I… it is my position!, but I’m not gonna do that (…) if Roy decides that he doesn’t want to do this anymore, he has to make an announcement. Right now, the smartest thing for us, and the most compassionate thing is to just give him the time until the next record, when we start really working hard on the next album, and if by that time he is not ready to work or he doesn’t wanna work, then we will have to look at the possibility of getting another singer, which is obviously something that we are ready/willing to do if we have to do that.”

RHAPSODY OF FIRE – FROM CHAOS TO ETERNITY out on June, 17th (Europe) and TBA (North America) via Nuclear Blast Records!

March 16th, 2011
by EvilG

RHAPSODY OF FIRE are proud to announce to the world that the mix of “FROM CHAOS TO ETERNITY” is now at the end and that the new album will be released by Nuclear Blast on June 17, 2011.

“It is the end of an era. This historical release will end the Rhapsody’s sagas once for all after 15 years of fantasy oriented lyrics and for the last time we’ll hear Sir Christopher Lee narrating in one of our albums the last dramatic events of a legendary tale started in 1997 and told through 2 different sagas and 10 full length albums. We are surely very sad but we also know that for this same reason the upcoming release will remain in the history of the band for its artistic importance and unique epic!”

Below is the new album cover, realized once again by Felipe Machado Franco, and the new tracklist. Enjoy and wait for further exclusive news on April 15th 2011!

TORNADO (4:57)

I. Lo Spirito Della Foresta

II. Realm Of Sacred Waterfalls

III. Thanor’s Awakening

IV. Northern Skies Enflamed

V. The Splendour Of Angels’ Glory (A Final Revelation)

Former HELLOWEEN vocalist Michael Kiske’s website has revealed that Kiske and GAMMA RAY frontman Kai Hansen (ex-Helloween) have teamed up again, with Kai joining UNISONIC.

Says Michael Kiske: “After so many years of abstinence I had a lot of fun doing my first live shows with Unisonic in summer 2010, so I agreed to do the short world tour with AVANTASIA. It was a great experience to be on stage with all those great artist, but with Kai it was something different: We instantly felt the magic again and had a lot of fun together on and off stage. We both realized that we want to be together in a band again. He was interested in the open musical concept of Unisonic and finally asked me if he could join the band. I talked to my bandmates and they all felt great about it. His talent as a guitarist and songwriter is an enrichment for the band and we are looking forward to his contribution for the music of Unisonic.”

Kai Hansen will stay a member of his band Gamma Ray and play all scheduled shows. Currently he is writing songs with the Unisonic guys for the long anticipated debut album, which is planned to be released at the end of 2011.

Unisonic lineup:

Michael Kiske (vocals)

Mandy Meyer (guitars)

Kai Hansen (guitars)

ICED EARTH Announce New Vocalist!

March 16th, 2011
by EvilG
Iced Earth's new vocalist, Stu Block from Into Eternity

Iced Earth's new vocalist, Stu Block from Into Eternity

In the wake of vocalist Matt Barlow’s retirement, dozens of demos and resumes flooded ICED EARTH’s management team. But one name kept popping up – INTO ETERNITY vocalist Stu Block, who has been named the new lead singer for Iced Earth.

According to leader Jon Schaffer, Robert Kampf, CEO of Century Media, early on suggested Block, whose band Into Eternity was previously on the CM label. That reminded Schaffer of one night in September, 2008, when Into Eternity opened for Iced Earth.

“Iced Earth was backstage waiting to go on,” said Schaffer. “We heard one of Stu’s incredible wails. I remember turning to Matt and saying, ‘Damn, that dude has serious range.’”

So while Iced Earth’s management team sifted through the growing number of prospective vocalists, Schaffer got in touch with Block.

After several phone conversations with the then-prospective Iced Earth vocalist, Schaffer asked his manager to e-mail Block several key Iced Earth songs, with the vocals stripped. Block went into his studio and recorded himself singing, then sent the files back to the team.

The result landed Block an intense two days at Schaffer’s studio where the two musicians hit it off.

“I felt a lot of chemistry between us, we knocked out a couple of great original pieces of music in no time” said Schaffer. “He’s very good at coming up with catchy melodies, and will help with lyrical duties as well. There’s no doubt Stu has an amazing vocal range and a lot of energy, but he also has the touring experience, which is a big plus for our plans of performing in all corners of the world.”

In addition, Schaffer said Block has what Iced Earth needs in a front man: “stage presence that includes high energy, passion, and focused rage.”

“Stu is charismatic and understands the depth and varying emotions in Iced Earth’s music,” said Schaffer. “So he will embody not only the emotion of our songs, but he will be able to perform them in a dynamic way. I believe fans are in for some incredible records and live shows in the coming years.”

New Iced Earth vocalist Stu Block concurs: “Iced Earth fans are wonderful, wonderful people,” he said. “The music is so passionate. So they’re passionate, and very loyal to the band. I am, too. I’m a huge fan of Iced Earth myself. So I share that same passion, and I will show it on stage. I think the fans are really going to dig it.”

Block continues: “It’s a huge honor to be doing this, to be part of this team,” he said. “It’s a dream come true, for sure.”

Schaffer is totally stoked. “This is a new beginning,” he said. “It’s game-on time. Iced Earth is going to record and tour like it never has before. The band is really amped-up and ready to hit the ground running in November.”

And to prove it, Iced Earth has released the European leg of a world tour that will take the band to countries it has never previously played. All told, the 2011-2012 Iced Earth world tour will be the largest the band has undertaken since its inception.

Check out Iced Earth’s tour schedule here.

NOTE: Retired Iced Earth vocalist Matt Barlow will perform with the band on all summer festival dates. New vocalist Stu Block will take over fromthere, starting with the European leg of Iced Earth’s world tour.
The band’s long-awaited 6-hour, three-concert live DVD Festivals of theWicked is scheduled for release this spring.

Sacred Oath - Revolution

Sacred Oath - Revolution

The Revolution begins

Sacred Oath has released a  digital 45  – “Revolution”  – exclusively through iTunes today March 15th.  The format offers a “B-side” track and so a previously unreleased track “Burn Away (Loki’s Song)” is included in the package.  This is the first commercially available release of a single from the World On Fire album.

“The world really is on fire,” says the band’s primary songwriter and lead singer Rob Thorne.  “Conceptually, we chose to do this album on ‘Dune’ because there are so many parallels with the struggles on our planet here and now, and revolution in this country seems inevitable. It was kind of freaky to see the revolutions here in Wisconsin and also in the Middle East break out just a couple months after the album was released.”
