HURTSMILE: The latest from Gary Cherone

December 9th, 2010
by Celtic Bob

Frontiers Records is excited to announce the release of HURTSMILE self-titled debut album on January 21, 2011 in Europe and February 8, 2011 in the US.

HURTSMILE is a new band featuring singer Gary Cherone (Extreme, Van Halen) who has teamed up with his brother Mark to write his most succinct record to date. The self-titled, HURTSMILE is a raw sonic sucker punch in the face! From the opening buzz saw riff of “Just War Theory” to the epic finale of ”Slave” and “Beyond The Garden/Kicking Against the Goads”, Gary continues to push and poke you in the ear with his lyrically provocative themes.

“Hurtsmile was a long time coming… I always wanted to write a record with my brother,” says Gary. “I’m a big fan of Mark’s song writing and his snarling guitar riffs.” The timing was right as Extreme was in-between their touring and record cycle, leaving Gary the freedom. They recruited Joe Pessia (bass) an alumnus of Nuno Bettencourt’s Dramagods as well as the guitar player for Tantric. Joe also engineered, and co-produced the record with Gary. To round off the lineup they enlisted heavy hitter Dana Spellman on drums “It’s an east coast-Boston thing,” states Gary. “Mark, my brother, was in a band with Nuno’s brother… Joe was in Nuno’s band and Dana was a friend, and student of Mike Mangini (former Extreme drummer) … we like to keep it in the family.”

The lineup is not the only thing familiar with the band. In true Cherone fashion, the record is chock full of swaggering guitar, soaring vocals and the trademark Cherone eclecticism on tracks such as “Jesus Would You Meet Me”, the reggae-tinged “Just War Reprise” and the Dylanesq “The Murder of Daniel Faulkner (4699)”. “Hurtsmile was about returning to my roots, writing a record in my basement, a straight up rock ‘n’ roll record… but it turned out to be more diverse and ambitious than I expected.”

Gary is no stranger to taking on intense topics, and Hurtsmile is no exception. The first half of the record is a group of more loosely knit songs such as the cynically inquisitive “Just War Theory”, the limit’s of free speech “Tolerance Song (edit)” and the disturbingly mesmerizing “Kaffur (Infidel)”, inspired by the beheading of Daniel Pearl.

The 2nd half of the record is more conceptually cohesive; an introspective look at the nature of man and the condition of the human heart. “Stillborn” introduced earlier, and “Set Me Free” both touch on mans inclination toward darkness, culminating with an epic journey from sin to salvation… “Slave” to “Beyond the Garden/Kicking Against the Goads”.

For the most part both themes are represented as 2 sides of a record. A concept familiar to Extreme fans but make no mistake, whether reading between the lines or just moved by the visceral power of the music, this is a completely different type of record. Gary adds, “All the boys in the band have brought something new to the table, and you’ll never know what hit you!”

“Hurtsmile” tracklisting includes:
Just War Theory; Stillborn; Love Thy Neighbor; Kaffur (Infidel); Painter Paint; Tolerance Song (Edit); Set Me Free; Jesus Would You Meet Me; Slave; Beyond The Garden / Kicking Against The Goads; Just War Reprise; The Murder Of Daniel Faulkner (4699).

The songs “Just War Theory” and “Love Thy Neighbor” can exclusively be listened in full in streaming on the Frontiers Web radio. Tune in at: www.frontiers.it/webradio

Gary Cherone – Vocals
Mark Cherone – Guitars
Joe Pessia  – Bass, Mandolin

BLIND GUARDIAN with Holy Grail – Best Buy Theater, New York, NY November 20th, 2010

BLIND GUARDIAN

with Holy Grail

Best Buy Theater – New York, NY

November 20th, 2010

Words and pictures by Kyle Moore, the Metal Magnus

Blind Guardian has an extremely important place in my personal metal pantheon. Their seminal album NIGHTFALL IN MIDDLE-EARTH blew my teenage mind into little tiny pieces that still have to re-collect themselves whenever I give that CD a spin. I went out of my way to see their live show in Venice, Italy almost eight years ago as they were touring in support of A NIGHT AT THE OPERA and like many other fans, observed that frontman Hansi Kursch doesn’t quite have the vocal gusto in concert that he does in a recording studio. They nonetheless gave a fine performance, and I looked forward to seeing them at some later date. As it happened, that later date came one night after covering Epica’s concert – fresh after spending 90 minutes of my previous evening fawning over Epica’s flawless siren Simone Simons, tonight I got to stare up the nostrils of some of power metal’s gnarliest-looking veterans.

EPICA

With Scar Symmetry and Blackguard

The Gramercy Theater – New York, NY

November 19th, 2010

Words and pictures by Kyle Moore, the Metal Magnus

I acquired a taste for Epica only recently, having finally been swooned by their latest effort DESIGN YOUR UNIVERSE. What really got my attention was seeing their live show earlier this year at New York’s Gramercy theater – their music truly explodes to life when experienced in the flesh. Naturally I was utterly elated that they would be returning and that I would have the opportunity to photograph the show!

Believer finishes tracking for new album

December 8th, 2010
by EvilG

Believer has just finished tracking their second release for Metal Blade Records. The recording will be mixed by Kevin Gutierrez at Assembly Line Studios and produced by Trauma Team Productions. The band is once again pursuing new musical territory.

“We decided to bring back some of the orchestral feel of Dimensions by utilizing more layered guitars, keys and melody with different vocal arrangements. There is still the ‘Believer’ sound, but the musical progression continues for us.” – Kurt Bachman

“We revamped our writing and recording process so that everyone could work at their peak times. We also spent a lot of time finding the right combinations of gear to achieve the sounds we wanted. Each Believer album has had its own sound that distinguishes it from the preceding album, and this project is no different in that respect. You still have the core elements that make it recognizable as Believer, but the guitar tone is heavier, the songs are tighter and musically it seems more refined.” – Jeff King

Believer’s Metal Blade debut, Gabriel, was released to rave reviews in 2009 and is available at these links: Amazon.com, iTunes.com

LAZARUS A.D. announce new album title, track listing, and artwork!

December 7th, 2010
by EvilG

“Black Rivers Flow” set to come out February 1, 2011 – First single ‘The Ultimate Sacrifice’ to premier on SiriusXM’s Liquid Metal!

AGOURA HILLS, Calif. – December 07, 2010 – Midwest thrashers LAZARUS A.D. are pleased to announce Black Rivers Flow as the title to their second full-length album due out February 1st via Metal Blade Records. The highly anticipated release was recorded in July and August 2010 at Belle City Sound with Chris Wisco and was mixed & mastered by James Murphy at Safehouse Production.

Track listing for Black Rivers Flow:

1. American Dreams

2. The Ultimate Sacrifice

3. The Strong Prevail

4. Black Rivers Flow

5. Casting Forward

6. Light A City (Up In Smoke)

7. Through Your Eyes

8. Beneath the Waves of Hatred

9. Eternal Vengeance

Bassist and lead vocalist Jeff Paulick comments; “First off, I have to say we are incredibly proud of Black Rivers Flow. It’s been three and a half years since we recorded our last album and we’ve grown a lot since then. During the writing process for Black Rivers Flow we were dealing with great personal tragedies. We found a way to draw strength from those tragedies and use it as inspiration to write what we feel is an incredibly more sound record than the last. On Black Rivers Flow, everyone stepped up their game; the riffs are heavier, the choruses catchier, and the vocals have improved and been diversified tenfold. We are on a mission to show the world that we are a force to be reckoned with and aren’t thinking about a trend, we’re thinking long term. I think our fans will hear these songs and be blown away. The energy and power this time around is undeniable, and we hope the reaction amongst the community reflects just that.”

The first single off the upcoming album Black Rivers Flow, “The Ultimate Sacrifice,” will premier exclusively on Sirius Satellite’s Liquid Metal TODAY at 10am PST/1pm EST. CIRCLE II CIRCLE Issue Update From Midwest Tour; Interviews Available

December 7th, 2010
by EvilG

American power metal kings CIRCLE II CIRCLE — featuring vocalist Zak Stevens of Savatage fame — are currently rocking through the Midwest US on the newest leg of their ongoing world tour, which is in support of their latest album Consequence Of Power. The band will play Kenosha, Wisconsin tonight on their way to the final two shows in Chicago and Cleveland.   Stated Zak Stevens from the road this week: “We’re still cruising along playing shows in the Midwest in Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota in November and December to finish off our initial world tour in support of our new CD Consequence Of Power. We’ll be touring out across the U.S. supporting the new album throughout 2011. We’re looking forward to seeing all our fans across the country in the coming year and we’re very excited about the worldwide response to the new record.”

CIRCLE II CIRCLE Remaining Midwest US Shows:

12/04/2010 Hattrix Bar – Kenosha, WI
12/10/2010 Nitecap Chicago – Chicago, IL
12/16/2010 The Phantasy Nite Club – Cleveland, OH

When Savatage singer Zak Stevens left the band in 2000 to form CIRCLE II CIRCLE, the whole power metal scene listened up. Right from the debut of their first album Watching In Silence, Zak made it unmistakably clear that he was willing and able to continue where Savatage had left off, but without giving his new band’s sound a more up-to-date feel. His charismatic personality and unmatchable vocal talent established the name CIRCLE II CIRCLE in the metal scene within a very short period of time.

With the release of CIRCLE II CIRCLE’s fifth studio album Consequence Of Power, the master vocalist and his band return with their ultimate masterpiece. This release is musically the most mature album in the band’s history, wrapped in outstanding lyrical content, and sure to please and amaze every fan of Zak and Savatage.

“…what tends to make CIRCLE II CIRCLE albums resonate with a cross section of hard rock, heavy metal, and even prog fans is the purity of delivery and the fundamental basis of the songwriting, both of which characterize Consequence of Power.” – Blabbermouth

“On Consequence of Power, Circle II Circle proves over and over again that power metal doesn’t have to be alienating and wanky, over-the-top absurd, or dependent on flashy solos in place of meaningful expression; it can be melodic hard rock played with talent and both instrumental and compositional skill.” – All Music Guide

“If pondering the output of Savatage members in the 2000’s, one could argue that Zak Stevens and his group Circle II Circle has been the most productive as well as adhering to his emotional, confident metal sensibilities.” – Blistering

“Musically, this is a great album with equal emphasis on the drums and guitars both competing with Zak for supremacy.” – Metal-Rules

A Sad Note: The passing of former Annihilator drummer

December 7th, 2010
by EvilG

Guitarist Jeff Waters posted the below note to the official Annihilator page today:

“A few weeks ago (while I was touring in Europe), I got word that we lost a former member of Annihilator’s touring lineup, Dave Machander. He passed away from cancer.

Dave was a super nice guy. I met him under stressful circumstances. In 1996, we did a record called REFRESH THE DEMON. Randy Black was our drummer then and I had bought everyone’s plane tickets for our upcoming Refresh the Demon EUROPE tour 1996.

12 days BEFORE the tour weas supposed to start, I get a call from Randy telling me that, if I did not pay him dounle+ the money I was to pay him for the tour, that he would not come along and would join another Vancouver artist “Bif Naked” instead (as she apparently was offering more money). I told him that we could not afford this and that it is very, very wrong to hold us “hostage” like this. He ended up leaving for Bif Naked (which ended up lasting one tour and he was out anyway!) but, more importantly, Randy Black left us with NO DRUMMER, a cancelled flight that I did not get my money back for and a tour in 12 days!!!

12 days is wayyyy too short of a time to get someone to jump in and play an Annihilator set and I still had to hope I could find someone!!

Dave Davis, our long-time guitar player, suggested his friend Dave Machander and thought he could handdle the gig/pressure. I was not convinced but had no other option than to literally say “you are in”, before I even heard him play drums!

We rehearsed on Vancouver Island, near where both Dave’s lived. We had 6 rehearsals scheduled. Normally, for a drummer with us, headlining Europe, we would need 10 reherasals.

Many drummers play along with a “click”. That is a cowbell kind of sound that keeps a time/beat in the drummer’s earphones and lets him play close to perfect timing… it helps him zoom in and play tighter than without one. Well, Dave was not playing well to it. Turns out, he had never played to one before. I was in panic mode. So was everyone else. So by the 4th rehearsal of 6, I was ready to cancel. Almost. Then Dave Davis said “Jeff, why don’t we simply take Machander OFF the click and let him just “feel” the music”.

I said “Might as well try, Dave”.

We did. INSTANTLY, the guy played fantastic. Really good. Better than good. He then really only had 2 good rehersals with us and then got on the plane with us and kicked f…ing ass on that tour. The guy pulled through and stuck with it. Most guys would have quit after the first few rehearsals but he would not give up. And thanks to Dave Davis for the tour-saving suggestion!

Anyway, I only saw/knew Dave Machander on that one tour with us. He was a bio-chemist, if I have my info right. A very smart guy and seemed to be a very nice guy, too!

Send a thought out to him and his family. He was a good guy.

And grab a loved one and give them a hug,

Jeff Waters”
