The band’s turbulent new full-length Grim Scary Tales presents the classic MACABRE style fans have come to expect, cleverly combining nursery rhyme sing-along quirkiness with ultra-tight, high-speed, gore/grind/death ingenuity. MACABRE have cleverly devised a “story book of murder” with this album, as Grim Scary Tales tracing back to the earliest recorded and most infamous mass killers.

“…this odd, transgressive, audacious record will be like manna from the drill-hole in the head of a Dahmer acid zombie for those who can abide a healthy dose of absurdity in their brutality. 8/10” – Decibel

“Every bit the raucous, gore-grind slab of still-quivering meat fans have come to expect from the band, Grim Scary Tales is another one in the win column for this now legendary trio. ” – MetalSucks

“…a mixed bag, offering some straight up blasters, semi-technical death (these guys are underrated musicians, IMO), “true metal” ballads, chicken-pickin’, poetry and those demented carnival sing-songs that the band likes to dabble in. 8.5/10” – Hellbound

“Blending elements of death metal, thrash, nursery rhymes, country rock, circus music, chamber music, a weird old town crier and even some world music themes Macabre takes the listener on a twisted sonic journey on every track.” – Metal Army America

“…their approach is utterly distinctive, with snappy, unfailingly energetic songs, based around either crisp machine gun death metal riffs or crunching, hooky mid-tempo grooves.” – Metal Reviews

“…the technical synchronicity that the band is capable of is nothing less than awe inspiring, and new fans just discovering Macabre with this disc might not fully appreciate their capability. 4/5” – Metal Rules

“Destroyer Of Solace,“ a track off the new album by emotive, epic metal band WHILE HEAVEN WEPT can be streamed here.

Guitarist, song writer and founding member Tom Phillips gives a little insight on the song:

“Jim [Hunter] totally nailed the sick bass run in one take.  Clearly, this is Bathory and Immortal inspired yet totally WHW nonetheless. And of course, as with all WHW material, it is rooted in real life events and relationships.  Or, rather specifically, one.  The bottom line is the is album comes from the deepest wells of my heart, and it really requires several listens to understand… even for me.  Anyway, it is the beginning of the end of a process of bereavement that began with the VOL album.”

Fear Of Infinity, the Virginia band’s Nuclear Blast debut, will be released in North America on May 3rd and is the follow-up studio album to 2009’s Vast Oceans Lachrymose.

WHILE HEAVEN WEPT are confirmed to perform on the center stage at the ProgPowerUSA XII festival on Saturday, September 17th in Atlanta, Georgia.  View the festival line-up here.  Tickets are available via TicketMaster.

On Saturday, March 26th, the band will be headlining a benefit concert at Volume 11 Tavern in Raleigh, North Carolina for Tony “Dio” Leonardo, a local metal promoter who recently underwent a nephrectomy.

“Save Us From Those Who Would Save Us” and “On Earth As It Is In Hell,” the first singles off the debut studio release by British occult NWOBHM band HELL are now available for purchase at this location.  The album Human Remains will be released in North America on May 17th.

Producer and HELL guitarist Andy Sneap is a life-long friend of the band who was taught guitar by the original HELL singer/guitarist Dave G. Halliday.  Sneap shares a bit of background on the song selected for the single:

“’Save Us From Those Who Would Save Us’ was actually HELL’s only ‘official’ release back in 1983 on the band’s own Deadly Weapon Records label.  Written by original singer/guitarist Dave Halliday, the original single was complemented by the instrumental B side ‘Deathsquad.’

“All the songs on the new HELL album were written between 1981 & 1986, with just a few small adjustments to the arrangements.  We recorded the album over the last three years,  in down time between other albums I’ve been working on and it was only by chance we ended up with Kev’s brother David [Bower] singing.  As he’s a professional actor / voice over artist, Kev asked him to do a voice over on one song; he then sang some backing vocals and immediately I knew we’d found the right guy. He’d seen the band close to 20 times back in the day so appreciated the theatrics needed to fill the shoes left by Dave Halliday.  We didn’t really set out to do an album.  At first it was just a group of old friends getting together and putting three songs down to see what they sounded like because we could with me now having a studio.  We kinda didn’t stop.  Personally, I can’t really pick a favorite song as I’m so close to the whole record…”

One of the true founding fathers of occult metal and cited as a huge indirect influence to many bands, HELL formed in 1982 from the carcasses of U.K. metal bands Race Against Time and Paralex – whose 3-song White Lightning EP was listed by Metallica as a favorite and was subsequently included on the Lars Ulrich / Geoff Barton “NWOBHM: ’79 Revisited” sampler.

View the video for “On Earth As It Is In Hell” here *and below).  It was directed by Kristian Harvard of Visual Concepts U.K.

HELL’s 2011 line-up:

  • David Bower – Vocals
  • Kev Bower – Guitar & Keyboards
  • Andy Sneap – Guitar
  • Tony Speakman – Bass
  • Tim Bowler – Drums

Gamma Ray - Skeletons & Majesties (EP DIGIPAK)

Armoury Records proudly unleash the details on the new release from German power metal kings GAMMA RAY!

Set for release in the US and Canada on May 31st via Armoury Records/Eagle Rock Entertainment, Skeletons & Majesties is a collection of songs GAMMA RAY gathered from previous albums represented in two completely different styles. The purpose of the disc is simply to have fun, and to give fans a heads-up on what is in store for the band in the coming months, as well as involve their fans in the upcoming actions.

The first two tracks are the “Skeletons,” featuring brand new versions of some of GAMMA RAY’s songs rarely (if ever) played live, including “Hold Your Ground” (from their Heading For Tomorrow album) and “Brothers” (from the Insanity And Genius album). The second section, “Majesties,” is where the band display two more new versions of rarities, ”Send Me A Sign (originally on the Powerplant release) and “Rebellion In Dreamland” (originally on Land Of The Free), both performed in a new acoustic presentation.

Additionally, GAMMA RAY have also included some bonus tracks, including the ultra rare track “Wannabees” — previously only released on the To The Metal! 7’’, and available here on CD for the first time – as well as an extended version of “Brothers.”

And to top it off, the final track on the EP is another version of “Rebellion In Dreamland,” this time  KARAOKE style! The band have launched a special contest, where they’ll be integrating a “choir” of their fans’ voices on the upcoming album version of the song! Diehards and wailers can take part in the competition by submitting a recording of their version of the song via physical demo submission or digital sound file. Full album details are available at this location.

Skeletons & Majesties Track Listing:

1. Hold Your Ground
2. Brothers

3. Send Me A Sign
4. Rebellion In Dreamland

Bonus Tracks:

Interview by Arto Lehtinen

Back in the day when MTV used to show metal videos, Crimson Glory’s “Lonely” video hit the screen, people not familiar with the band before were entirely surprised and spellbound by the band’s progessive and catchy melodies. But above all their eccentric steel masks rose the interest and fuss around the band; who are these guys? TRANSCENDENCE is still hailed as one of the greatest melodic and progessive metal albums ever. Vocalist Midnight’s emotional and great vocals crowned the whole beauty of Crimson Glory. Years passed by, the band struggled with line-up changes and vanished from the map a couple of times. The passing of vocalist Midnight brought the rest of the band members together once again. After the Prog Power show the new vocalist Todd La Torre was introduced to the metal world. The man’s unique and great voice has awakened Crimson Glory to another era. It was a good opportunity to have a chat with the current frontman Todd La Torre and find out more about himself and how he got the GC vocalist job.

MERCENARY Post Video Commenting on North American Bonus Track

March 24th, 2011
by EvilG

Danish melo-death quartet MERCENARY — who just completed an extensive European tour alongside Symphony X and Nevermore — have posted a short video about “Incorporate Your Demons,” the bonus track that appears on the North American version of the group’s acclaimed new album “Metamorphosis,” which arrives in stores next Tuesday (March 29). Check it out here: Pre-order your copy of “Metamorphosis” now at Prosthetic’s online store: <>

“Metamorphosis” track listing:

1. Through The Eyes Of The Devil

2. The Follower

3. In A River Of Madness

4. Memoria

5. Velvet Lies

6. In Bloodred Shades

7. Shades Of Grey

8. On The Edge Of Sanity

9. Black Brigade

10. Incorporate Your Demons (North American bonus track)

Through the last decade, MERCENARY have been one of the most active and successful proponents of Denmark’s rising metal scene. Over the course of their previous five studio albums, which earned the band increasing critical acclaim for their distinctive blend of aggression and huge soaring melodies, the band earned a wide international audience and dedicated fan base. MERCENARY have toured actively as support for top acts such as Megadeth, Arch Enemy, Nevermore, King Diamond, Death Angel and many more. They have also appeared on most major metal festivals, such as Wacken (twice), Tuska, Metal Camp, Earthshaker, Inferno, Graspop, Dynamo, Summer Nights, ProgPower Europe, and ProgPower USA (twice) and many more.

Behind the scenes, however, deep creative and personal differences increased through the years, and they culminated when their drummer, keyboard player and one of their two singers left the band in late 2009. Joined by master drummer Morten Løwe, the band now counts the song writing team of original member Jakob Mølbjerg (guitar) and master shredder Martin Buus (lead guitar), as well as the versatile singer/bassist René Pedersen.

Rising from the ashes of the old lineup, the Mercenary of 2011 evolves and reshapes the band’s trademark sound of combined clean and aggressive vocals with a new edge, displaying a catchy and fresh sound, as well as an newfound unity, ambition and musical focus within their ranks. This is reflected in the “Metamorphosis” cover imagery.

“There’s of course a lot of obvious (and indeed slightly cheesy) self-referential symbolism regarding the rebirth of the band in the cover artwork,” the band said in a statement released last week. “But apart from that, we felt that the motive of a phoenix was a fitting expression of many of René’s lyrical themes on the album, as they deal with personal and existential crisis, overcoming personal obstacles and how we can sometimes redefine ourselves in the process of taking responsibility for altering the conditions of our very lives. This idea of personal freedom can be a very frightening thought for some, but it’s actually a message of hope and optimism – we can always take control of our lives and free ourselves of inner or outer constraints, or at least take pride in the struggle to do so.

“(Okay, dropping all the intellectual pretense, we just liked the artwork because it was freaking bird on fire – how cool is that!?)

“On a serious note, though, we also felt that a simple, raw and iconic visual theme would support the musical direction of the new album. We feel that the songs are our strongest ever – they’re no-bullshit, focused and straight to the point, and our good friend Don G really nailed these concepts with his artwork.”

WITHERED Announce and Comment on Spring Dates

March 24th, 2011
by EvilG

Blackened doom Georgian beasts, WITHERED, have confirmed a slew of shows this spring, including appearances at MACrock and New England Metal Fest, as well as dates with Krallice, and some headline dates. WITHERED continue to support “Dualitas,” which was released in October of 2010 and made Decibel’s Top 40 Albums of the Year list. Since then, the band has supported Danzig on his “Blackest of the Black Tour,” and toured with label mates, Skeletonwitch.

Singer/guitarist Mike Thompson commented on the April dates: “Our tour dates this April will harbor a monsoon of dynamics, venues, and participants. It feels very chaotic, just the way we love to work. It’ll begin with a one-off date April 1st as we participate in the return of the MACRock festival this year. It’ll be rewarding to bring our new music to this part of the country again, which we’ve neglected unintentionally for several years now. Following that, we’ve also been invited to participate in NEMF once again. This is always a good opportunity for Withered to bring our music to more diverse crowds than we’re used to. Plus, we’ll get to share the stage with some great bands and friends as well. After that we have a mix of headlining dates and a northeast US/Canadian run with Krallice. We’ve been talking about doing something together for quite a few years now so it’s great to see this materialize. We’ll be offering quite a mix of withered material for these dates from all three albums. We’re excited about playing some songs from “Memento Mori” that haven’t been performed in several years in addition to reaching into the deeper compositions from “Folie Circulaire” and “Dualitas”. It will feel great to be on the road again.

4/1 Harrison, VA- Blue Nile (MACrock)

4/15 Wilmington, DE- Mojo 13 (w/ Dying Fetus)

4/27 Cleveland, OH- Now That’s Class #

4/29 Baltimore, MD- Talking Head #

Like its predecessor, the critically acclaimed “Folie Circulaire,” “Dualitas,” was recorded by KYLESA’s Phillip Cope at the Jam Room in Columbia, SC. The CD and vinyl versions of the album have different covers, both of which were created by Paul Romano (Mastodon, Trivium, The Acacia Strain). The band appeared on the “Blackened Fest” in 2009 with Mayhem, and also toured with Watain, Marduk, and appeared at 2009’s inaugural Scion Rock Fest, as well as Maryland Death Fest.

SKELETONWITCH Taps Drummer Tony Laureano For April Tour and New Album

We’re fucking stoked to have a drummer of his caliber and experience on board. He’s a beast behind the kit and a great fucking guy as well. You can’t ask for more than that!”

“After our last tour Derrick informed us that he is putting down the drum sticks and picking up the paint brush. He is returning to art school and does not wish to be a musician anymore. We would like to thank Derrick for his years of dedication to Skeletonwitch. Though we will miss him, there is no bad blood. We will always remain great friends and wish him the best with his new endeavor.”

FIREWIND has returned and we’re looking forward to this one more than anything! We can’t wait to play a full set again for our crazy fans all over the continent and play songs from “Days Of Defiance” as well as older fan favorites! Get ready for an ass-kicking night full of Fire and Fury!

And he added the following regarding the recent confirmation of WOLF as touring partners: “We’re also pleased to have our buddies from WOLF on board for this tour. We’ve known them for years and we did a one-off show together in the UK back in 2007. They’re a killer band and great bunch of guys who just like us, live for Metal! See you out there!“

Swedish Metal Maniacs WOLF on the other hand had the following to say about the upcoming tour: “We are very happy to announce that we’re touring Europe together with our friends in FIREWIND. Not only do we get to play countries we haven’t done for ages, but we can also rock out every night before and after the gig! With “Legions Of Bastards” as part of our set list, this will be a WOLF tour to remember, cubs! See ya in the front row!”

BOSTON, MA (March 24, 2011) —After several weeks of careful tabulation, it’s now official: Berkleemusic, the online continuing education division of Boston’s renowned Berklee College of Music, and Grammy®-award winning guitar virtuoso Steve Vai, have set the Guinness® World Record for the world’s largest online guitar lesson. This first-of-its-kind initiative, held at leading streaming media platform Livestream Studios in New York City on March 3rd, brought together almost seven thousand members of the international guitar community in a celebration of online music education.  Guinness certified the world record based on Berklee having recruited 4,455 students over the first 15 minutes to the lesson. Building on the renowned guitar curriculum that Berklee has offered to students for decades, the course is now open for enrollment for the school’s spring term which begins on April 4th, 2011.
