TESTAMENT – Vocalist Chuck Billy

April 5th, 2011
by Metal Rules

Vocalist Chuck Billy

Interview by Luxi Lahtinen

On/offstage pictures by Terhi Pihlaja

Thanks to Silke from Tough Enough Promotion for setting up the interview and Laura Thiessen for the transcription

Testament has undergone quite an eventful history (both in good and bad) within all those 24 years they have existed under the Testament name. The band´s existence was seriously at stake in early 2002 when the band´s vocalist Chuck Billy was diagnosed with a rare kind of cancer. Luckily, after undergoing numerous treatments, he finally managed to fully recover.

THE FORMATION OF DAMNATION, Testament´s highly acclaimed comeback album in 11 years, came out in 2008 – and since then the band has spent long periods on tours of which taking a part of Megadeth´s "Rust in Peace 20th Anniversary Tour" around the U.S.A. in March 2009 together with Exodus, was undoubtedly one of the highlights for the Testament team.

Testament has also become a regular visitor for the Finnish metal fans over the recent years; the band has visited Finland for the last 4 years in a row, playing at some of the precious Finnish summer (metal) festivals. This year, they made their 2nd appearance at Tuska festival where they played in 2005 for the 1st time. Everyone who has seen Testament playing live within the last 2 years since they released their strong comeback record THE FORMATION OF DAMNATION in 2008 (which was also chosen as "The Best Metal Album of 2008" by the staff), can subscribe the fact the live chemistry between each band member in Testament, is on a phenomenal level; so well they have welded together as a band over the years.

Chuck Billy talked to again about some of the most current Testament-related things – like including naturally band´s hard touring in general, a slow song writing process for their follow-up album to T.F.O.D., etc. – and the 2nd album from Dublin Death Patrol, kind of "all-star jam band", was talked about a little bit, too.

PRETTY MAIDS – Vocalist Ronnie Atkins

April 2nd, 2011
by Marko Syrjala

The Danish hard rock band the Pretty Maids was originally formed in 1981 by singer Ronnie Atkins and guitarist Ken Hammer. They found worldwide success with the now classic 80’s albums RED HOT AND HEAVY and FUTURE WORLD but although they’ve sold hundreds of thousands of albums, they have never broken through in a major way. In the 90’s they enjoyed some overwhelming success in Japan market but when the decade ended, the band faced many difficult problems and they slowly disbanded from the spotlight. However, they never officially quit and instead they did some select dates in Europe every then and now until things changed again in 2010. Pretty Maids released PANDENOMIUM, their strongest album in ages, and they’re once again ready to rock again with full force.

SLEEP Announce 2011 Live Dates

April 1st, 2011
by EvilG

Following the successful Marijuanaut’s Return tour of September 2010, West Coast stoner metal legends SLEEP recently announced three North American dates for 2011. The mini run of dates will include New York City on June 22, Los Angeles on June 26 and an appearance at the Sled Island Music & Arts Festival in Calgary, Alberta, Canada on June 24.

SLEEP 2011 Tour Dates:

6/22/2011 Terminal 5 – New York, NY

6/24/2011 Sled Island Festival – Calgary, AB

6/26/2011 The Wiltern – Los Angeles, CA

Said Noisecreep of the band’s last live excursion: “…if the band put any more stacks on the stage, it just might have collapsed.” Added Popdose: “SLEEP was fucking killer and who knows what the future holds… if you get a chance, they are well worth your time and money…be prepared for one of the loudest fucking things you’ve ever heard.” Rolling Stone Brazil gave the band’s performance a perfect 5 out of 5 rating while Redefine Magazine noted: “SLEEP, despite being broken up for over ten years, seemed like they hadn’t missed a beat — and Holy Mountain never sounded so good in the process. This was the definitive show of the weekend, if not the definitive show of my year.”

Check out live footage of the band’s Denver show last year HERE.

About SLEEP:

SLEEP split in 1997 after two hugely influential albums. Members went on to form OM and High On Fire. Original members Al Cisneros and Matt Pike were joined by drummer Jason Roeder of Neurosis last Fall for a short stint of reunion dates that floored their earliest fans and converted new ones.

The band debuted with 1991’s Volume One album, recorded for San Francisco label Tupelo. Earache Records received the band’s next recordings in the mail as a demo. The label — impressed by SLEEP’s single-mindedness and unique vision — immediately signed the band and released the tape exactly as it was received. Record stores worldwide have stocked SLEEP’s Holy Mountain from November 1992 to this day.

The band then signed to London Records. Their debut album for the major took the form of one mammoth 63-minute leviathan of a track entitled “Jerusalem.” They resisted the label’s attempts at radio edits and bringing in their own engineer to remix the album in view of “marketability.” London balked at the prospect of promoting what probably still is the most extreme music ever recorded for a major label, consequentially shelving the record and dropping the band.

In addition, SLEEP’s music has been featured in films by Harmony Korine and Jim Jarmusch.

Pre-orders now being taken for Lars Eric Mattsson’s “Aurora Borealis”

April 1st, 2011
by EvilG
Lars Eric Mattsson - Aurora Borealis

Lars Eric Mattsson - Aurora Borealis

Pre-orders for Lars Eric Mattsson’s forthcoming instrumental masterpiece “Aurora Borealis – Concerto For Orchestra & Electric Guitar” (released 15th April 2011) are now be taken at the LM store.

This new wholly instrumental 12 track release takes a fresh approach to the blend of guitar and orchestra for a musical experience as uplifting as seeing the wonder of the northern lights, from which the album gets its title. Whilst the combination of orchestra and guitar may have been done before by amongst others one of Mattsson’s influences Uli Jon Roth; ‘Aurora Borealis’ takes the range of sound and expressions further that what has been heard before and places as much emphasis on each tracks backing as with its guitar work. The result is a highly captivating and listenable experience. Lush in textures and timbres, ‘Aurora Borealis’ comes across at times like a film score; sometimes fast and exotic whilst at others sweet and luxurious. Many moods are covered and all of which see Mattsson deliver impassioned guitar work in his own inimitable style.
