According to many, they are the seminal pioneers of prog metal. Seattle’s Queensrÿche got a minor break even with their first eponymous EP, and have since released eleven full-length album, with a twelfth one in the way. The band always distinguished themselves with their both intricate and accessible tunes, clever lyrics and Geoff Tate’s impressive vocal performances. Many still associate Queensrÿche primarily with such albums as “Operation: Mindcrime” (1988) and “Empire” (1990), but rather than copying their own recipe for success the band has continued to evolve, never releasing the same record twice. This is one reason for the devotion that characterizes Queensrÿche-fans. Another one is the band’s perennial qualities as a live-act, making them eternal favorites not least with the SRF-crowd.

ALICE COOPER Announces “No More Mr.Nice Guy” Tour and Re-Vamped Band

March 7th, 2011
by Celtic Bob

For Alice Cooper’s “No More Mr Nice Guy” summer tour, May-August 2011, Alice has announced a revamped band line-up. The tour will kick off in North America May 12-21, then go to South America May 25-June 3, and England & Europe June 7-July 16, before returning to North America again for the month of August.

Alice is bringing back to his stage show guitarist Steve Hunter, who famously toured and recorded with him for several years. Additionally, Tommy Henriksen will be replacing Keri Kelli on guitar, and Damon Johnson will be continuing with the band, making for a three guitar attack.

Glen Sobel will be joining the band on drums, replacing Jimmy DeGrasso, while bassist Chuck Garric will continue to anchor the rhythm section.

Said Alice, “Steve’s always been one of my favorite guitarists since the first time I ever heard him play, and I’ve been working with Tommy a lot on the new album. Oh, and yes, a new snake might make the band lineup…you never know. We will miss Jimmy and Kerri, but I know we will be sharing a stage again in the future.”

BACKWOODS PAYBACK Guitarist/Vocalist Releases Book; Band To Kick Off U.S. Tour March 9

March 7th, 2011
by EvilG

BACKWOODS PAYBACK guitarist/vocalist Mike Cummings recently unleashed Confessions of a Lackluster Performer, a collection of a writings by a musician/artist who’s been neck-deep in the U.S. underground music scene since the age of 15. These collected works capture the fine line between desperation and self-realization, depression and rejoice, the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. The book was initially issued in 2009. An updated edition with new works from the author and an introduction from acclaimed solo artist and co-founder of the legendary band Life Of Agony, Keith Caputo is now available. Turn on. Tune in. Drop out to live. Nosensemakessense. For order info visit lulu.com.

In related news, the Pennsylvania stoner/doom rockers are about to embark on a 17-date U.S. tour with labelmates Lo Pan. The loudness will begin March 9 in Baltimore and include two appearances as part of this year’s SXSW music conference in Austin, Texas. BACKWOODS PAYBACK will be touring in support of their Small Stone Recordings debut, set for release later this spring.

After touring the country relentlessly for five years, the singer of a Pennsylvania hardcore band decided to stop everything, lock himself in his basement and turn a new page. Armed with a four-track and a life long obsession with Neil Young, Black Flag and Sabbath, he re-emerged two days later with the blueprint for what would become BACKWOODS PAYBACK. With the help of a few like-minded individuals the band transformed into fully operational Death Star of riffage before the end of that year.

Staying true to the D.I.Y. sensibilities of their past, BACKWOODS PAYBACK spread their word one song, town and person at a time. The band toured the U.S. whenever possible, self-recorded and released their own EPs and full-lengths and acted (and continue acting) as hosts and goodwill ambassadors of sorts to touring bands from all over the world. Small bar shows led to bigger ones and weekend tours turned into month-long jaunts. After several years and countless trips crisscrossing the country, BACKWOODS PAYBACK found themselves sharing the stage with the likes of The Hidden Hand, Exodous, Gwar and Cradle Of Filth.

MR. BIG - What If...

MR. BIG - What If...

New Release «What If… » Out Now!

HOLLYWOOD, CA (March 7, 2011) – MR. BIG will once again unleash their brand of brutal fury to the masses in Hollywood, Saturday April 2nd at the House Of Blues with their very first US show in 15 years! “Man, it’s been a long time,” states guitarist Paul Gilbert. I can’t wait to play in L.A… actually, I can’t wait to play our first show in AMERICA in about 15 years. It’s gonna be huge!”

«What If… » is MR. BIG’s first all original album since the reunion of the four original members,  Eric Martin, Paul Gilbert, Billy Sheehan and Pat Torpey back in early 2009. Sixteen years after the release of « Hey Man », the new recording is set to bring back MR. BIG on the height of the current Hard Rock scene.

Guitarist Paul Gilbert said: “This is the first MR. BIG album I have been a part of, since fourteen years and it was done in a snap. It was fun and we had really a  good time in making this one”. Continues Billy SheehanIt’s so great to be back with Paul, Eric and Pat too. We wrote this record like we did in the old days for the first 2 records. Jamming together in the same room to write songs”. Pat Torpey adds ““Some of the recording process is different now from what we were used to in the old times. But I think this record really managed to capture the performances of the band, not of the individual musicians”.

Their hits included “To Be With You” (Billboard Hot 100 number one single in 15 countries for weeks, in 1991, propelling the band the band to huge international success and record sales in the multi-millions), “Wild World”, Green-Tinted sixties Mind”, “Just Take My Heart”, and a host of heavy metal songs that were played mostly during their live performances: “Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy”, “Addicted to that Rush”, “Colorado Bulldog”, and “Take Cover”.

“What If…” is released in a special edition CD + DVD in digipak, regular CD, vinyl and digital download and in a limited edition luxury box including the CD, DVD, LP and exclusive memorabilia.

“What If…” tracklisting includes: Undertow; American Beauty; Stranger In My Life; Nobody Takes the Blame; Still Ain’t Enough for Me; Once Upon a Time; As Far As I Can See; All The Way Up; I Won’t Get In My Way; Around The World; I Get The Feeling; Unforgiven (exclusive bonus track for Europe / North America – not on vinyl edition).

The DVD will include the videoclips of “Undertow” and “All the Way Up” plus a documentary “Making of” the album including interviews and exclusive behind the scenes features of the four members.

Sponsored by Nuclear Blast USA, Decibel Magazine, Amoeba Music L.A. and Dean Guitars, the world’s first-ever film festival dedicated to heavy metal music is set to take place at the Downtown Independent Cinema in Los Angeles, California this coming March 31st through April 3rd, 2011.

Organizer and metalhead Samuel Douek is proud to announce the festival’s Nuclear Blast In Cinema Concert Series:

“As part of the world’s first Heavy Metal Film Festival, we’d like to announce our Nuclear Blast Concert Series featuring MESHUGGAH: ALIVE by Ian McFarland and The Seventh Date of Blashyrkh by IMMORTAL.  These two concerts have been captured on DVD and each brings to the screen something magnificent.  ALIVE was made as a film first and as concert second, while The Seventh Date of Blashyrkh brings to life a band that can only be seen on a big screen to understand.”

A Q&A session with ALIVE filmmaker Ian McFarland of Killswitch Productions (who created the music video for the MESHUGGAH song “Bleed”) will follow the screening.

Shot by director/producer Ian McFarland of Killswitch Productions during MESHUGGAH’s 2009 North American tour and at their 2008 performance at the Loudpark Festival in Tokyo, Japan, ALIVE contains concert footage of selections from the band’s Billboard Top 200-charting 2008 release, obZen, in addition to their time-tested career staples.  Gracefully interlacing the live tracks are behind-the-scenes vignettes shot in black & white that give ALIVE a concert film feel so unlike many of the live DVDs currently on the market.  The result is a visceral, visual abduction into the band’s metric insanity-in-action.

The Seventh Date Of Blashyrkh is the first official live DVD in the history of IMMORTAL’s existence.  Many remember the shock in 2003 when – thirteen years into their existence – IMMORTAL suddenly announced they would disband.  Shot at the prestigious Wacken Open Air festival in Germany when the band headlined the Black Metal Stage in 2007 as their reunion show, The Seventh Date Of Blashyrkh features songs that span IMMORTAL’s timeless discography and includes three back-to-back-to-back selections from their most acclaimed release, Sons Of Northern Darkness. The leather & spikes, the “war paint,” the bursting pyrotechnics, the essential anthems, and Abbath’s on-stage acrobatics are all there, along with an audience of 70,000 witnesses to the magic.

Showtime schedule & additional films will be announced soon.

Las Marimbas Del Infierno (Marimbas From Hell) by Julio Hernández Cordón will be opening the festival on Thursday evening, March 31st.

The first portion of the maiden line-up for 2011’s Heavy Metal Film Festival can be viewed at the festival’s official site.  Click HERE to download HMFF movie posters (Password: 8j-RT4o).

On Thursday, March 10th, advanced tickets to the HEAVY METAL FILM FESTIVAL will be available for purchase via the Downtown Independent Cinema Box Office.  Ticket prices will be as follows:

  • $15.00 – Opening Night Screening (includes After-Party)
  • $33.00 – Day Pass (Friday, Saturday & Sunday)
  • $66.60 – Advanced Purchase Festival Pass (ONLY 30 available at this SPECIAL PRICE; includes Opening Night)

“On behalf of myself and Incantation, we would like to announce that we have just been added to the greatest indoor European death metal fest line up that we have ever seen. Yes, I’m talking about this year’s Neurotic Deathfest in Holland. Incantation is honored to share the stage again with the almighty Autopsy, as well as the return of At The Gates, and other metal legends like Obituary, and new metallers of the 2K-era Hail Of Bullets. We plan to play a very obscure set in honor of this amazing line up and for our very supportive fans, old school and new alike. With a well rounded fest lineup bound together with leather and spikes, you will not want to miss this Incantation setlist, which is already a making in the metal history. Due to a multitude of classic tunes (“The Boys Are Back in Town,” “Jailbreak,” “Waiting for an Alibi,” etc.) and albums (‘Jailbreak,’ ‘Live and Dangerous,’ ‘Black Rose,’ etc.), Thin Lizzy is undoubtedly one of rock’s all-time great bands. And with arguably the band’s strongest line-up since the days that the late/great Phil Lynott served as their front man, Thin Lizzy are set to take the USA by storm with upcoming tour dates in late March and early April.

The trek will include stops in Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, Toronto, Detroit, and Chicago, and will also include a live appearance on the popular radio show, Rockline, on March 23rd, which will run from 11:30 pm to 1:00 am EST. Thin Lizzy’s current line-up includes such ‘Lynott era’ Lizzy veterans as Scott Gorham (guitar), Brian Downey (drums), and Darren Wharton (keyboards), as well as singer/guitarist Ricky Warwick, bassist Marco Mendoza, and Def Leppard guitarist Vivian Campbell.

Thin Lizzy became one of rock’s top bands during the 1970’s, on the strength of Lynott’s poetic yet tough lyrics, and the highly influential dual guitar attack of Gorham and which ever second guitarist he was paired up with at the time (Brian Robertson, the late Gary Moore, Snowy White, or John Sykes). Lizzy split up in 1983, before Lynott passed away in 1986. But with Lizzy being either consistently name checked as an influence or having their songs covered by other bands, the group’s stature has remained at the forefront of rock over the years. And now, US fans will be able to experience the Lizzy legend once more on the concert stage.

Heavy metal with a Southern groove. That was the concept when former Ozzy Osbourne-guitarist Zakk Wylde formed Black Label Society in 1998, and that’s how it still looks today. To date the massive – in both senses of the word – guitar-hero/frontman and cohorts have released eight studio albums, including such successes as “Mafia” (2005) and last year’s “Order of the Black”. As we all know, American and European metalheads have different preferences, but in this case both sides agree: Black Label Society is one of the finest American metal bands today. Even if Zakk himself has given up beer, he can still count on countless beerdrinkers to give a warm reception to him, his trusted associates Nick Catanese (guitar) and John DeServio (bass), and newly appointed drummer Johnny Kelly (ex-Type O Negative).

Did we mention that the band will play just before Ozzy Osbourne on june 11th?
