DAMNATION FESTIVAL

22nd November 2008

Leeds University, UK

All live pics and review by HannTu

The Damnation Festival has a proud history of serving up quality metal to metalheads in the British Isles for quite a few years now. It has come from humble beginnings to currently span three indoor stages, and attracting big names in metal as well as breaking newer independent bands is its aim. Mille Petrozza of Kreator called it right, he said that “this isn’t a festival for scenes and trends”. Indeed, and with this year’s varied line-up, ranging from Carcass to My Dying Bride to Berserker to Sigh, there was something in it for everyone.

"Goddamn humans and their stupid ideas

Moronic morality for the weak and full of hope

We’re supposed to think we’re created to serve – when

domination is in our nature?

What kind of god is this?
"

- from the Cattle Decapitation song "Unintelligent Design"

I have seen this band live in Mexico City at Chas Metal Attack. On that night we also saw Monstrosity, Marduk and Setherial. We are used to expecting the best from the bands that we already know like Monstrosity, but this Death/Grindcore band really impacted on the face of many… since that day these following questions came to me… keep reading!!!

Flaming Tusk

I spoke via email with the members of Flaming Tusk, a metal band from Astoria, New York on their new EP, ABIGAIL, available to download on their myspace site. I had reviewed ABIGAIL and found it a refreshing listen, and when talking to the members of the band, it is clear that they do love their metal and are not short on confidence in the potential of Flaming Tusk. Read on for a quirky and articulate take on themselves and metal in general…

MASTER – Paul Speckmann

December 15th, 2008
by Luxi Lahtinen

Paul Speckmann – The mastermind behind Death Strike, Master, Abomination, etc.

Interview by Luxi Lahtinen

Paul Speckmann is one of those incarnations of everything heavy, brutal and metal that many have considered as a true inspirations and influence when starting their own band. Paul is mainly known for his bands Death Strike, Abomination and especially Master. He has received a lot of credit from musicians around the globe, from such bands as Terrorizer, Napalm Death, Obituary, Entombed, etc., for being a huge influence for all these bands back in the day. His impact on the whole death metal scene is unquestionable.

Having recorded 9 studio albums with Master in his career so far, the band´s latest album, SLAVES TO SOCIETY, contains 11 songs of classic Master material. Paul´s well distinctive, death grunts are one of the trademarks of Master´s sound – so is the fast, uncompromising, heavy and to-the-point approach style, which is actually easy to love. It even could sincerely be said that Master is like a rolling stone that just never becomes covered with moss. It has only gotten better over the years, which SLAVES TO SOCIETY so clearly proves for being a real nutt-kicking effort from them.

In talking with one of the true icons of the death metal, Paul was very keen on telling us about his latest ´baby´ SLAVES TO SOCIETY, his move from his birthplace Chicago, Illinois to his current home country the Czech Republic, problems about finding their latest album in music stores from Czech Republic – as well as naturally anything related to his past bands from War Cry to now Chech-based Master, that is also activated touring-wise.

Now let´s call our favorite beast in, and let him continue telling the story…

MADBALL – Nosturi, Helsinki, Nov 20, 2008

Madball with Worth The Pain and Ratface

The 20th of November, 2008

Nosturi, Helsinki

Review & Pictures by Arto Lehtinen

Obviously at least a few true metal heads will get freaked out again when seeing a gig review of a hardcore gig in the site of Metal-Rules.com. Several bands from both genres have drawn influences from both genres into sounds of their own and have created and unleashed groundbreaking metal and hardcore classics since the 80’s. Madball definitely appeals to both metal and hardcore genres and that could be testified as a plenty of metal heads arrived to see and feel the pure chaos and mayhem in the pit.

Interviewed by EvilG

Interview questions by Celtic Bob and EvilG

Live pics by Celtic Bob

Thanks to Jon Long and Jerrica Keeping

of Green Dog Productions for filming/editing and video graphics

Keri Kelli has been kicking around in many hard rock and metal bands for quite some time. His current gig is with the legendary Alice Cooper. He joined the band on the DIRTY DIAMONDS tour and is now onto his second tour with Cooper. This time out, Keri is even on the new Alice Cooper album ALONG CAME A SPIDER.

When the Alice Cooper circus came to town, we were given access to film the stage setup, see all of Keri’s guitars and then conduct an interview with Keri backstage. Besides the obvious topics of what it’s like to play with Cooper, we get to hear about some of the other musical endeavours such as Saints of the Underground that Keri is involved in and some other side projects he’s got cooking.

BLACK LABEL SOCIETY -House of Culture, Helsinki FINLAND

BLACK LABEL SOCIETY

22.11 2008

House of Culture, Helsinki

FINLAND

A lot of water has flowed under the bridge since Zakk Wylde made a debut visit to Finland, as a new axe man of Ozzy Osbourne on the NO REST FOR WICKED tour, almost 20 years ago. During these years since the first visit, the man has become the well known and adored name on the lips of several young guitar players around the world. His Black Label Society has been cllimbing the ladder of success during the whole decade. That can be noticed as venues have become bigger and the attendance of audience or so called “family” has grown tremendously as well.
