FREEDOM CALL - Live In Hellvetia CD/DVD

FREEDOM CALL - Live In Hellvetia CD/DVD

Having sold over 35,000 copies of their debut, Stairway To Fairyland, FREEDOM CALL’s tour with SAXON, ANGRA and EDGUY turned into a triumphal march. The tour culminated with memorable shows with SAVATAGE and SKEW SISKIN in August 1999 as part of the Popkomm music fair in Cologne. The band played almost fifty shows in 2000 and proved their worth at various festivals, like the Wacken Open Air 1999 and 2000.

Their second release, Crystal Empire, even surpassed the debut’s success. The sales figures increased, and even before the album was available, Freedom Call were invited to the Metal Fest in Bologna, Italy, the Metal Days in Switzerland and delivered an unforgettable performance at the STRATOVARIUS / RHAPSODY show in Bourges, France.

Following the release of Crystal Empire, Freedom Call embarked on a 63-day European tour with HAMMERFALL and VIRGIN STEELE that took them through Scandinavia, Holland, Germany, Austria, Hungry, France and Spain, among other countries.

June 2002 saw the arrival of the third Freedom Call recording, Eternity” followed by an extensive tour with BLIND GUARDIAN. During that time period they recorded Live Invasion. At the same time, Freedom Call established themselves as a headlining act in their own right and they were celebrated as the stars of the Wacken Road Show 2004 night after night.

The Circle Of Life saw the integration of more modern and unusual arrangements into the band’s sound, extending the musicians’ sonic range – an element which their album, Dimensions, also benefits from. With both albums they toured extensively with bands like RAGE and DRAGONFORCE.

In 2010 the new album, Legend Of The Shadowking, saw the light of day. The album is based on the story of King Ludwig II and charted in Sweden and Finland. In February/March 2010 Freedom Call embarked on a huge European tour together with GAMMA RAY and in May 2010 with AXEL RUDI PELL. Afterwards they played over 40 gigs on festivals and as a headliner. After nearly 15 years of existence and approx. 200,000 albums sold it was time for the first DVD which was shot by the end of 2010 in Pratteln, Switzerland.

Both the CD and DVD packages include the entire live show from Pratteln, Switzerland. The second disc of the DVD set includes interviews, a A Day In The Life Of Freedom Call featurette and much more. The limited edition 2 CD/2 DVD deluxe package contains both CD’s, both DVD’s and a deluxe A1 Poster.

March 25th, 2011
by EvilG

Today The Official Japanese Blog of Almah ( revealed the message of Almah musicians, Edu Falaschi and Felipe Andreoli, to Japan:

“After all these days I still have no words to express all this pain that I have in my heart! But at the same time I feel that I must try in any way to help the people that I love and respect so much!

My daughter has Japanese blood and a part of my family is Japanese, and this make the sadness that I feel even stronger!

But I’m sure that Japan will rise again and will show to the world why this country is so evoluted!

I know that Japan lost many innocent lives, but if this kind of disaster had happened in some other country, we would have million of dead people! I’m proud of Japanese people! Their respect, culture and intelligence, saved million of lives.

With all my love and respect,

Edu Falaschi”

“To all our dear fans and friends in Japan,

I know that you are a brave and hard working people, and I know that you will overcome this bad situation in the best way possible.

From Brazil we send you our thoughts, hoping for the best for each and every one of you, your families and loved ones.

This great country has showed the world in the past an incredible capability for overcoming great tragedies, and this time shouldn’t be any different.

Best wishes,

Felipe Andreoli”

PLACE OF SKULLS: As A Dog Returns To See European Release

March 25th, 2011
by EvilG

Volcom Entertainment is proud to join forces with legendary doom guitarist/vocalist Victor Griffin (Pentagram, Death Row, Cathedral) and PLACE OF SKULLS. Titled As A Dog Returns, the nine-track follow-up to 2006’s The Black Is Never Far was released in the U.S. last fall via Giddy Up Records. Recorded at Lakeside Studios in Knoxville by Travis Wyrick and Griffin with drums recorded and engineered by Mike Dearing, As A Dog Returns will finally see a proper European release on April 4, 2011 via Volcom with distribution by ADA Warner.

Said Griffin of the cooperation: “We’re extremely happy with this arrangement. I’ve had my eye on Volcom for some time now. They’re a wide-reaching company and have their hand in other markets besides music… a clothing line, skateboard/surfing apparel, and more. It’s cool that a company like this loves heavy music and only puts out the stuff they really dig. It’s just a whole different angle than the way labels typically work.”

Already commended by critics and fans alike, Cosmic Lava called As A Dog Returns, “intense and evocative…,” with Doommantia adding, “…classy, solid and creative, the musicianship is second to none as Griffin is in top form, Tomaselli delivers a stellar performance on the drums and the bass playing of Abney is spot on.” Metal Register boasted, “…As A Dog Returns proves, convincingly, that PLACE OF SKULLS are much more than just a Trouble tribute band…a solid and creative heavy metal/hard rock album that will leave an imprint on many a listener.” Dangerdog also gave the record kudos claiming, “‘The Maker,’ ‘Breath Of Life,’ ‘Psalm,’ and ‘Desperation’ are some of the best, somber, foreboding, and often dark, heavy/doom metal you’ll find on this side of the Atlantic.”

Coinciding with the European release of As A Dog Returns, PLACE OF SKULLS will embark on a European tour with The Gates Of Slumber. Presented by Vibra-Agency, Volcom and Rock Hard Magazine, the dates are as follows:

3/31/2011 FIN – Helsinki, Kuudes Linja

SOILWORK Singer and ARCH ENEMY Bass Player Launch Classic Rock Band

March 25th, 2011
by EvilG

THE NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA, the new classic rock band featuring Björn Strid (SOILWORK) and Sharlee D’ Angelo (ARCH ENEMYSPIRITUAL BEGGARS), have posted two songs on their Facebook and Myspace pages. For music visit: |
THE NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA started like so many others as an innocent yet serious drunken idea when Björn Strid (SOILWORK) and David Andersson (MEAN STREAK, session SOILWORK) were on the road together somewhere in North America in 2007. Björn andDavid were bonding over what they considered “classic” or not, from rock n roll conspiracies to being arrested in a lobby with nothing but leather pants on. All those scenarios, fictional or real, needed a soundtrack. They also came to think that whether you’re on a metal tour or not, a lot of classic rock songs say it all and can really lend you a helping hand and make you forget about everything, especially when in motion or travelling. The classic escape. The never-ending road trip. The transatlantic night flight. It may sound simple and naive but what it all comes down to is that we all need that soundtrack to feel extra special, whether you have been arrested in a lobby or not.

It didn’t take long before bass player Sharlee D’ Angelo (ARCH ENEMYSPIRITUAL BEGGARS) joined forces as well as keyboard playerRichard Larsson (VON BENZO) and drummer Jonas Källsbäck (MEAN STREAK). The goal was to reclaim the 70’s/early 80’s sense for classic melody, the forgotten recipe to a timeless song, preferably a song mentioning a city, street name or an exhilarating alcoholic beverage. Anything that will have you spitting out the word ‘classic’. From “Tarot Woman” to “Badlands”, from “Rhiannon” to “Running on Empty”, from “Blind Man” to “Night Moves”, from “Deuce” to “Separate Ways”, from “Elected” to “Set me Free”. The list goes on. It’s all about reclaiming the “classic”. The band is currently unsigned but are looking into recording their debut album this summer.

Since the release of their debut album In Hatreds Flame during July 2008, EXMORTUS have kept busy touring and gigging relentlessly with bands such as label mates Vektor and LA black thrashers Witchaven. After suffering a temporary setback with the departure of former frontman Balmore during early 2010, the band rebounded quickly with lead guitar shredder Conan taking over on vocals and the addition of new guitarist Sean Redline. The short break from their busy live schedule also provided the band with the time needed to complete the material for their upcoming sophomore album entitled Beyond the Fall of Time. Armed to the teeth with their most aggressive material to date the death-thrash quartet entered Black Static Studio in Los Angeles to begin recording Beyond the Fall of Time, tentatively scheduled for release during late summer 2011 on Heavy Artillery Records. Drummer Mario Moreno had this to say about the new line-up and progress in the studio to date:

“We’ve been at Black Static Studios for nine days now and we feel that we couldn’t have picked a better studio to capture the new material. The line-up change during early 2010 set our original recording plans back by several months so we’re excited to finally be recording this album. With the new line-up of Conan on vocals and the addition of Sean Redline on second guitar the band is at its strongest ever. We’re really happy with the new material and the heavier sound. Sean has contributed a lot of great ideas to the album overall and Conan will finally get to showcase his vocals.”

Catch EXMORTUS live at the Black Castle in Los Angeles on Friday March 25th with Witchaven, Killbot, Zombie Holocaust and more.

Sponsored by Nuclear Blast USA, Decibel Magazine, Amoeba Music L.A., Boss Printing, Dean Guitars, and Full Metal Jackie, the world’s first-ever film festival dedicated to heavy metal music will be taking place at the Downtown Independent Cinema in Los Angeles, California this coming March 31st through April 3rd, 2011.

The following four shorts will be a part of the first annual HEAVY METAL FILM FESTIVAL’s inaugural short film program:

A short film by Mike Cassidy and Tim Sheridan (USA)

In March of 2003, “The Hottest Band in the World,” KISS, embarked on a concert tour throughout Japan, stopping for three Crazy Nights at the legendary Budokan Hall in Tokyo. With consecutive sold out shows bringing out over 14,200 Japanese Super-Fans each night, the Psycho Circus was as evident outside of the venue as it was inside. Dressed to Kill, the kabuki-faced fans from all walks of life joined en force to celebrate this much anticipated event. This KISS Army was more like a KISS Family. With lavish costumes and elaborate face make-up, this spectacle was unrivaled by any modern day costume ball. In other words, it’s Cold Gin time again!  “Faces of Budokan” puts you front row for the “show” before the show.  It’s like “Heavy Metal Parking Lot” with an extra shot of sake and a spicy tuna roll!

Directors: Gregg Ferguson & Kurt Squiers (USA)

Finally, a documentary with balls.  How did millions of fans connect with AC/DC?  To find out… we asked them.

The mission: create a unique film about the fans of one of the greatest bands the world has ever known, AC/DC.  The inaugural Heavy Metal Film Festival has been given the unique opportunity to screen 16 minutes of the film for its Los Angeles premiere, as directors Gregg Ferguson & Kurt Squiers are still battling time to complete the project.

DEATH ANGEL: A Thrashumentary (Trailer)

Director: Tommy Jones (USA)

This is an exclusive 12-minute trailer to the DVD that will be released in 2012.  This film gives the viewer an in-depth look into the mighty DEATH ANGEL, one of the longest-running thrash metal acts from the San Francisco Bay Area known for turning out historic thrash bands such as METALLICATESTAMENT and EXODUS.  With their classic debut album The Ultra-Violence nearing its 25th anniversary, DEATH ANGEL has survived a span of 30 years of activity and now was the time to finally tell their story.  Filmed on the “Relentless Retribution” world tour, the film shows the band on the road talking about their career, is cut with “fly-on-the-wall” documentary-style interview footage, and captures their trademarked, high-energy live performances that leaves their fans purged of sweat and adrenaline.

Director: Mohammad Kabeer (INDIA)

Capital Metal is a documentary about the local metal scene in New Delhi, India.  It features big bands in the scene likeThird Sovereign and Undying Inc., as well as little known yet extremely talented bands like Phobia and Guillotine. The film focuses on various issues related to the scene, from handling their day jobs and playing metal to how they hold their own in a market dominated by Bollywood.  Since no band in Delhi (no matter how popular they are) can play metal to support themselves, they all need a second job. The film was made in eight days with a meager budget of 200 dollars as part of a college project.  It is the first metal documentary to be made in India and explores the passion to play music despite all odds and shows us that metal exists outside of Europe and America.

Miami International Film Festival award-winner Las Marimbas Del Infierno (Marimbas From Hell) by Julio Hernández Cordón(Guatemala/France/México) will be opening the festival on Thursday evening, March 31st.

The first portion of the maiden line-up for 2011’s Heavy Metal Film Festival can be viewed at the official HMFF site.  Click HERE to download HMFF movie posters (Password: b=8X+6G).

Advanced tickets to the HEAVY METAL FILM FESTIVAL are now available for purchase via the Downtown Independent Cinema Box Office.  Ticket prices will be as follows:

The band’s turbulent new full-length Grim Scary Tales presents the classic MACABRE style fans have come to expect, cleverly combining nursery rhyme sing-along quirkiness with ultra-tight, high-speed, gore/grind/death ingenuity. MACABRE have cleverly devised a “story book of murder” with this album, as Grim Scary Tales tracing back to the earliest recorded and most infamous mass killers.

“…this odd, transgressive, audacious record will be like manna from the drill-hole in the head of a Dahmer acid zombie for those who can abide a healthy dose of absurdity in their brutality. 8/10” – Decibel

“Every bit the raucous, gore-grind slab of still-quivering meat fans have come to expect from the band, Grim Scary Tales is another one in the win column for this now legendary trio. ” – MetalSucks

“…a mixed bag, offering some straight up blasters, semi-technical death (these guys are underrated musicians, IMO), “true metal” ballads, chicken-pickin’, poetry and those demented carnival sing-songs that the band likes to dabble in. 8.5/10” – Hellbound

“Blending elements of death metal, thrash, nursery rhymes, country rock, circus music, chamber music, a weird old town crier and even some world music themes Macabre takes the listener on a twisted sonic journey on every track.” – Metal Army America

“…their approach is utterly distinctive, with snappy, unfailingly energetic songs, based around either crisp machine gun death metal riffs or crunching, hooky mid-tempo grooves.” – Metal Reviews

“…the technical synchronicity that the band is capable of is nothing less than awe inspiring, and new fans just discovering Macabre with this disc might not fully appreciate their capability. 4/5” – Metal Rules

“Destroyer Of Solace,“ a track off the new album by emotive, epic metal band WHILE HEAVEN WEPT can be streamed here.

Guitarist, song writer and founding member Tom Phillips gives a little insight on the song:

“Jim [Hunter] totally nailed the sick bass run in one take.  Clearly, this is Bathory and Immortal inspired yet totally WHW nonetheless. And of course, as with all WHW material, it is rooted in real life events and relationships.  Or, rather specifically, one.  The bottom line is the is album comes from the deepest wells of my heart, and it really requires several listens to understand… even for me.  Anyway, it is the beginning of the end of a process of bereavement that began with the VOL album.”

Fear Of Infinity, the Virginia band’s Nuclear Blast debut, will be released in North America on May 3rd and is the follow-up studio album to 2009’s Vast Oceans Lachrymose.

WHILE HEAVEN WEPT are confirmed to perform on the center stage at the ProgPowerUSA XII festival on Saturday, September 17th in Atlanta, Georgia.  View the festival line-up here.  Tickets are available via TicketMaster.

On Saturday, March 26th, the band will be headlining a benefit concert at Volume 11 Tavern in Raleigh, North Carolina for Tony “Dio” Leonardo, a local metal promoter who recently underwent a nephrectomy.

“Save Us From Those Who Would Save Us” and “On Earth As It Is In Hell,” the first singles off the debut studio release by British occult NWOBHM band HELL are now available for purchase at this location.  The album Human Remains will be released in North America on May 17th.

Producer and HELL guitarist Andy Sneap is a life-long friend of the band who was taught guitar by the original HELL singer/guitarist Dave G. Halliday.  Sneap shares a bit of background on the song selected for the single:

“’Save Us From Those Who Would Save Us’ was actually HELL’s only ‘official’ release back in 1983 on the band’s own Deadly Weapon Records label.  Written by original singer/guitarist Dave Halliday, the original single was complemented by the instrumental B side ‘Deathsquad.’

“All the songs on the new HELL album were written between 1981 & 1986, with just a few small adjustments to the arrangements.  We recorded the album over the last three years,  in down time between other albums I’ve been working on and it was only by chance we ended up with Kev’s brother David [Bower] singing.  As he’s a professional actor / voice over artist, Kev asked him to do a voice over on one song; he then sang some backing vocals and immediately I knew we’d found the right guy. He’d seen the band close to 20 times back in the day so appreciated the theatrics needed to fill the shoes left by Dave Halliday.  We didn’t really set out to do an album.  At first it was just a group of old friends getting together and putting three songs down to see what they sounded like because we could with me now having a studio.  We kinda didn’t stop.  Personally, I can’t really pick a favorite song as I’m so close to the whole record…”

One of the true founding fathers of occult metal and cited as a huge indirect influence to many bands, HELL formed in 1982 from the carcasses of U.K. metal bands Race Against Time and Paralex – whose 3-song White Lightning EP was listed by Metallica as a favorite and was subsequently included on the Lars Ulrich / Geoff Barton “NWOBHM: ’79 Revisited” sampler.
