The technical death metal outfit was founded in 1994 and has done time on the road with bands such as Cannibal Corpse, Despised Icon, The Faceless and took part in the 2008 Canadian Summer Slaughter Tour, with Necrophagist, Dying Fetus, Beneath the Massacre and more.
On Monday, January 17, Swedish black metal overlords WATAIN took home the “Best Hard Rock” award for their Lawless Darkness full-length at Sweden’s annual Grammis ceremony (the Swedish equivalent to the U.S. Grammy Awards).
Comments frontman Erik Danielsson: “I always pictured the criteria for entering the Grammy awards to be those of mainstream music in general; conformity, insipidity and commercial potential. In other words, I was quite surprised when we even got nominated. But considering all the blood, sweat and tears we have put into this, our life’s mission, during the past 13 years, it is by all means an award well deserved. And no matter what the parameters were by which the jury made their decision, the Devil won again.”
“Even if this music genre will always be one with adversity and wild hearted insanity as it’s very roots,” he continues, “the artistic value must be acknowledged not only on an underground level but in any cultural circumstance, high or low. Acknowledged I say, not necessarily appreciated. And in a country like Sweden it is about fucking time, for here it has been neglected and stupefied by the mass media for years, while legends such as Dissection and Bathory have been writing and releasing some of the most monumental albums in music history. The Grammy that we have won with WATAIN is a step towards rectification in that matter, and a sign that the artistry and infernal creativity that permeates WATAIN and this genre is being taken seriously. For that we are proud and delighted in accepting the award. As for it’s market-value or importance in a “music industry context,” we sincerely could not care less.”
Lawless Darkness was released via Season Of Mist on June 7, recorded at Necromorbus Studio (Deathspell Omega, Funeral Mist, Ondskapt et al) in Alvik, Sweden and features cover art by Zbigniew M. Bielak.
In related news, WATAIN was also nominated in the P3 Gold Awards to be held this Saturday in the “rock/metal” category as well as the Manifest Awards on February 4 in the “rock” category.

SCALE THE SUMMIT formed in 2005 while attending the Musicians’ Institute in Los Angeles. The band relocated to Texas in 2006, where they recorded their first, self-released album. After signing with Prosthetic, they released “Carving Desert Canyons”, which Revolver called, “a cinematic blast of intricately melodic fretwork and pummeling percussion,” in 2009.
The band, who received praise from Guitar World for their “tightly-woven guitar interplay, irregular time signatures and tasteful licks,” has toured with the likes of PROTEST THE HERO, BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME, CYNIC, THE DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT and were handpicked by DREAM THEATER to participate in the 2009 installment of their famed “Progressive Nation” festival tour. SCALE THE SUMMIT has also been featured prominently in Guitar Player magazine, and has tracks available for the Rock Band video game through the Rock Band Network.
The new band MaYaN with many Epica members involved will release their debut album: Quarterpast on the 20th of May 2011.
The 7 singers on this album will be:
Mark Jansen: grunts & screams, Arien van Weesenbeek: grunts, Jack Driessen: screams, Floor Jansen (ReVamp, ex-After Forever), Simone Simons (Epica), Henning Basse (Sons of Seasons) and the revelation and one of the biggest Italian Opera talents, named Laura Macrì. See Laura sing here:
MaYaN will upload every day a new movie about the vocal recording sessions.
PERIPHERY Announce Massive North American Spring Tour With
Fair To Midland and Scale The Summit; Post New Video For “Jetpacks Was Yes” Exclusively At GuitarWorld.com
There is no doubt that PERIPHERY are innovators and guitarist Misha Mansoor is being hailed by industry experts and his peers as one of the main purveyors of this current Djent movement that is feverishly spreading throughout the progressive circles. This Maryland based six-piece spent the better half of 2010 on the road and pick up in the New Year right where they left off as they prepare for a massive European tour, which kicks off at the end of the month.
On March 3rd, PERIPHERY makes their much anticipated return to North America alongside Fair To Midland and Scale The Summit. This five-week trek is going to be a monster and see below to view the entire touring itinerary. Also, the group’s visually stunning masterpiece for the track, “Jetpacks Was Yes,” can be viewed now exclusively at the link below. The video was produced by Eric Haviv, Richard Webb, and Brandon Morris of FUGO Studios (www.fugostudios.com). Click on the link below now to check it out.
Guitarist Alex Bois states: “This tour couldn’t have come at a better time! We’ll be fresh off of our first UK/EU tour and hungry to return to our home crowds. We’ve all been HUGE fans of both bands for a while now and it will be great to finally share the road/stage with them. I think our styles compliment each other in such a way that this tour will be educational, as it is exciting. Our new Icarus Lives EP will also be released around this time too, so we’re also stoked to be showcase some tracks from it. See you all soon.”
Vocalist Spencer Sotelo further comments on the new video: “Originally the guys and I wanted to portray a very melancholy vibe. We had been brainstorming ideas together for a few weeks and had some different concepts. I thought it would be awesome to try and bring to life the actual meaning and emotion of the song’s story line in a very literal, yet tasteful way. It is a fictional story about an infinite being who outlives everyone, and everything, he comes in contact with. He comes to realize that although living forever has it’s great benefits, it is a curse because everything has a finite lifespan whether it be people, trees, animals, even planets and solar systems. Therefore, this video is the section of his life where he is reminiscing on his past relationships with different places and people that had meaning to him. The rest is basically showing how he has outlived the very place he had called his home for a great deal of time, and he now has to search for new colonies throughout the galaxy to fit in to and ultimately start over and make a new life.”
Very rarely does a band come along that just defies the boundaries of conventionality, but the experimental, progressive metal outfit PERIPHERY have done just that and have blazed a trail of originality that has sent a shockwave throughout the metal world. Southern Lord label mates BLACK BREATH and NAILS are both confirmed to take part in the recently announced Scion Rock Fest, scheduled to take place in Pomona, California on March 5th, 2011. NAILS and BLACK BREATH are part of the amazing double-stage lineup also including Morbid Angel, Obituary, Death Angel, Municipal Waste, Agalloch, Integrity, Bastard Noise, Atheist, Floor, Crom, Wormrot, Kvelertak, Necrite, Woe, Fuck The Facts, Bonded By Blood and Christian Mistress!
Seattle’s d-beat crushers BLACK BREATH have been touring the US heavily over the past year, and most recently returned from a month-long European tour in November, followed by an appearance with label mates Wolves In The Throne Room and the mighty Neurosis at the end of December. The band continue to bring the pain on the stage in support of their debut album Heavy Breathing Southern Lord delivered in March 2010, which reared it’s head again in countless year-end lists worldwide. With a new album expected later in 2011 and more tour plans coming together for the coming months, expect more news on BLACK BREATH soon.
One of Southern Lord’s more recent signings, California’s trio NAILS’ insanely brutal 14-minute album Unsilent Death also ranked in endless year-end lists from fans and journalists everywhere. After several regional tours of the US, including a rash of dates with Venomous Concept, NAILS are working on their follow-up to Unsilent Death for Southern Lord, are set to appear on the first night of this year’s Maryland Deathfest, and will continue to unleash hell on audiences throughout the year.
Singapore grindcore trio WORMROT have just finished a mini-tour of South East Asia, which included the band’s first ever time visiting Thailand and Vietnam – where the band was forced to play two songs for permit officers prior to the show, in order to be approved and allowed to perform.
Following their return home, WORMROT have written a tour blog to detail their unique experience, including being one of the first and only grindcore bands to play in Vietnam.
Some excerpts from the tour blog follow:
14 Jan 2011 – Johor Bahru, Malaysia
“The show in Embrace Hall was fucking awesome. There were some guys from Penang who took a 12 hours train ride just to see Wormrot! That was really touching and we really appreciate their support. Everyone seemed to have fun; moshing, dancing, stage dive, etc…”
15 Jan 2011 – Bangkok, Thailand
“It is our first time in Thailand so we didn’t know what to expect from the crowd… Turns out to be a killer! Crazy, crazy Thai crowd!!! There were about 70+ people in total but it seemed like there were 100 people in there. Stomping the stage and dancing like they’ve been possessed! It was like a Thai Boxing competition!”
16 Jan 2011 – Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
“When we reached Ho Chi Minh City Airport at around 9.40am, the Security Police Officers checked our luggage. They would not let us through as we were carrying merchandise, especially CDs. One of them told me that he can let us go IF we gave them 3 of our Abuse CDs as there were 3 officers. We gave them the CDs and that settled everything. Hope they are into Grind coz I figured they might get heart attack when they listen to it.
“Again we did not expect anything much as it was also our 1st time in Vietnam. So, when the crowd went crazy during Wormrot’s set, it was really mind-blowing for us as most of them were not Metalheads. Some even brought their kids for goodness sake! But all ended well with everyone being so supportive that there’s nothing more we could ask for.”
If you’ve ever wanted to hear WORMROT slowed down, check out a video of the band having to play two “mellowed” songs from their set list for event permit officers in Vietnam at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9z2uunEs01k
WORMROT are due to return to the USA this March for their second ever tour there. Catch them live on the “Dirge Across America” tour at the following shows:

BORN OF OSIRIS are mature well beyond their years and this dynamic extreme progressive juggernaut has now perfectly honed all of their collective talents to create what will soon be a pinnacle release for the metal genre. This ground-breaking six-piece group creates an epic mix of intricate and memorable melodies with challenging time signatures that still hold an infectious groove, all while maintaining sheer, tasteful brutality.
Their much anticipated third full-length album, The Discovery, is now set for a March 22nd release and is going to serve the scene the much needed wake-up call it so much needs. The effort was mixed by the acclaimed producer Jason Suecof (All That Remains, Trivium). Be sure to stay tuned to www.facebook.com/bornofosiris for all info on the new album and samples of new material which will be posted in the coming weeks.
Lee McKinney (guitars) further states: “I should start by saying this new album is heavier than anything the band ever released. We have moved onto seven strings and it couldn’t have complimented our sound any better. We brought back the ‘BOO-bounce’ on this one. It’s definitely a really fun and upbeat album. Also, the addition of our new guitar player Jason Richardson has increased the amount of shred on this album. There are some really incredible guitar solos on this album from the both of us. It takes the band to a whole new level of musicality. This album contains an awesome mix of our most heavy, most technical, most atmospheric and most beautiful melodies ever.”
BORN OF OSIRIS is now currently preparing to co-headline the third annual “Atticus Metal” tour with Darkest Hour. As Blood Runs Black and The Human Abstract round out the stellar bill. Sleeping Giant will be special guests on all westcoast dates and look for other special openers on other shows depending on the region. This monstrous trek, which kicks off on Feb. 25th in Washington, DC at the 930 Club will also serve as Darkest Hour’s record release show.
“Atticus Metal” promises to be one of the most exciting tours for the first half of 2011 and is a must see for all metal fans alike. For additional information and all tourdates feel free to see below head over to http://www.facebook.com/atticusmetaltour

LED ZEPPELIN 2, the tribute band featuring bassist Chris Klein, drummer Ian Lee, guitarist Paul Kamp and vocalist Bruce Lamont, rang in the new year with a North American tour which commenced with two dates at the House Of Blues in Chicago on January 7 and 8. The flashbacks continue as the band winds through nearly a month’s worth of dates before drawing to a close on February 12 in Denver at The Gothic Theatre. LED ZEPPELIN 2 brings you the excitement of Led Zeppelin “In Concert” by re-enacting the live improvisation and onstage interaction that earned Led Zeppelin their legendary status for performing. Rather than a “greatest hits” show, you get to experience Zeppelin as Zeppelin would have played live in front of an audience. LZ2 sold out venues across the U.S. in 2010 and have drawn rave reviews for a “spot-on” Zeppelin show, playing deep cuts and classic tracks from the entire catalog, and occasionally entire Led Zeppelin performances from specific dates.
“LED ZEPPELIN 2 is by far and away the next best thing,” says IndyConcerts.com. “The music excels and the chemistry is unmatchable. What LED ZEPPELIN 2 did was take a song that Led Zeppelin was known for and duplicate its sheer amazingness… Everything was right about it… They’re bringing Zeppelin to the stage for a whole new generation of people.”
“Bruce Lamont and Paul Kamp (of Yakuza and Busker Soundcheck fame, respectively) and the killer rhythm section of Ian Lee and Chris Klein bill themselves as LED ZEPPELIN 2, and they do as good a Zep as Zep ever did back in the day,” hails the Chicago Sun Times.
Timeout New York proclaims, “LED ZEPPELIN 2 is the best Zep band around,” and The Dallas Review reports that LED ZEPPELIN 2‘sperformance is “…the closest thing to seeing the real Led Zeppelin in concert.” “Who cares if the real Led Zeppelin reunited? This strong tribute act paraded through Page and Plant hits for a sold-out House of Blues…” says Timeout Chicago.
Most widely recognized for his saxophone and vocal work fronting Chicago’s Yakuza, Bruce Lamont has contributed to a plethora of other projects including Bloodiest (featuring members of 90 Day Men, Sterling), Circle of Animals (with Sanford Parker, Minsk/The High Confessions) and Sick Gazelle (with Eric Block and Sanford Parker). He’s also recorded with Sigh, East West Blast Test, Minsk, Nachtmystium, Rabid Rabbit, Brutal Truth, Cephalic Carnage, Sweet Cobra, Locrian, Hex Machine and more. Commented Lamont of the shows so far: “The shows have been amazing. Really enthusiastic crowds and the age range of folks coming out has really been insane…from teenagers to folks in their ’70s. Amazing!”

This Friday night (1/21) at 8PM EST, All Hail Hair will welcome Billy Childs, the bassist and original member of Britny Fox! Hosted by Bob Carroll and Francis, the guys will speak to Childs about the history of Britny Fox, the Philadelphia metal scene and what he is up to today. The show always welcomes listener participation, so call in at (347) 202-0832.
Britny Fox burst onto the music scene in 1987 with the release of their self titled debut, on Columbia Records. The band saw success through heavy rotation on MTV with both “Headbangers Ball” and regular rotation. The band released their sophomore release “Boys in Heat” in 1989, but vocalist “Dizzy” Dean Davidson left the band shortly after. The band pushed on, replacing Davidson with Tommy Paris (aka Don Jillson of the band Jillson) and released a 1991 album, “Bite Down Hard” The album was praised by critics as the bands return to its original sound, but timing was ill fated as the Seattle sound started to take hold of the music world and pushed the 80’s metal scene to the back. The band stayed together through numerous personnel changes, Childs staying as the only constant member. The band released a strong album, “Springhead Motorshark” in 2003 and toured through 2010. Childs will bring the listeners up to date on the Britny Fox story, what the band is up to today and also speak about his involvement in “Get The Led Out”.
