Artillery, one of the best thrash metal bands around, is currently working in Medley Studios, Denmark on the follow-up to their highly acclaimed album “When Death Comes” (2009). The new material entitled “My Blood” will be released by Metal Mind Productions in March 2011. So far Artillery recorded 14 songs – 10 brand new tracks, a remake of “Ain´t Giving In” (from 1992´s “Mind Factory” demo) and 3 bonus tracks which are all new versions of timeless classics from the 1985’s album “Fear of Tomorrow” (“The Eternal War”, “The Almighty”, “Show Your Hate”). Soren Adamsen, Artillery’s vocalist, revealed a few titles of the new tracks. He also described the lyrics for those tracks: 1. “The Great Satan” – it’s a song about the decadence of the western society and evil empires all around the world.
2. “Monster” – a song about serial killers. None in particular.
3. “Death is an Illusion” – a track about life and death.
4. “The End of Eternity”- dealing with depression and thoughts about starting a new life.
5. “Mi Sangre” – it’s about my son. It’s a 7 and a half-minute song, almost an epic endeavor.
6. “Concealed in the Dark” – two words – David Sharp. Go search for it on the internet, it’s an interesting story.
7. “Dark Days” – it’s about the change in the climate.
8. “Warrior Blood” – a song about fighting. Soldiers, prize-fighters, people who are struggling with deadly diseases.
What can we expect from the musical side of the new album? Guitarist Michael Stützer says: “The sound is a bit more heavy than it was on ‘When Death Comes’. The music is a mixture of our previous albums ‘When Death Comes’ and ‘By Inheritance’, with a slight touch of ‘Terror Squad’ and ‘Fear of Tomorrow’ with some oriental pieces.” Producer Søren Adamsen added: “There is an almost rock´n roll feeling in some of the songs”.
The release date of “My Blood” is set for 9th March 2011 in Japan (via Kings Records), 21st March 2011 in Europe and 5th April 2011 in USA (via MVD). Full details to be announced soon.
All the best, Agnieszka Świątnicka-Kulpińska
FEAR FACTORY will return to the stage later this month as part of their ongoing Fear Campaign tour. The short string of U.S. dates will kick off in Tempe, Arizona on December 29 and conclude 9 days later in San Diego, California on January 8. FEAR FACTORY — guitarist Dino Cazares, vocalist Burton C. Bell, bassist Byron Stroud and drummer Gene Hoglan — spent the greater part of 2010 touring in support of their critically-acclaimed Mechanize full-length released in February via Candlelight Records. Decibel magazine called Mechanize the “greatest FEAR FACTORY full-length in more than a decade,” while Revolver noted, “the record marks a clear return to the classic FEAR FACTORY sound. The result rings familiar but also fresh; even in the very futuristic year of 2010.” Added Blabbermouth: “FEAR FACTORY 2010 is a fiery and evolved rebirth of the band that changed metal in the ’90s…Mechanize is the album I have been waiting for.”
“Dimmu Borgir,” the new video by Norwegian symphonic black metal band, DIMMU BORGIR, is now available for viewing at Nuclear Blast’s VEVO channel. The video was created by Katapult Films (Rammstein) director Sandra Marschner (Marilyn Manson, Children Of Bodom, Mando Diao).
The track “Dimmu Borgir” comes off the band’s recent album, ABRAHADABRA, which debuted at #42 on the Billboard Top 200 chart, #5 on the Top Hard Music Albums chart, and #6 on the Independent Current Albums chart. ABRAHADABRA also debuted at #4 on the Top Rock albums and #30 Top Albums charts at iTunes (U.S.) the day of its release. In Canada, the album debuted at #4 on the Nielsen Soundscan Top Hard Albums chart.
DIMMU BORGIR just completed their headlining “Darkness Reborn World Tour” of North America.

Here is an interview I did with guitarist Matt Leff in the new band Machines Of Grace. The well known Zak Stevens (ex- Savatage, Circle2Circle) and Jeff Plate (Trans Sibiran Orchestra, ex- Savatage, Metal Church) are two of the members of this new group. Leff and I talked about the band and their debut album amongst other things including the impact that Ronnie James Dio had on Matt Leff and the band. Machines Of Grace plays hardrock and even though their album has been out for about a year now I thought it was time for the band to be featured in metal-rules.com.
JUDAS PRIEST guitarist K.K. Downing checks in with the following year-end update:
“Season’s greetings to all! ‘Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow’… as the song goes. And we have certainly got plenty of it in the UK. However, I can’t complain, because it is very rare that we have a white Christmas these days. I remember as a kid praying for tons of the stuff, especially as it could possibly mean that we would not have to go to school.
Moving on, I can’t remember ever having to cancel a gig because of bad weather, which is a complete miracle as we have had to battle through some horrendous conditions. Many times I can remember winter tours, especially in Europe. Painkiller comes to mind as we toured in Helsinki early February, it could not have been colder and they must have had as much snow as the North Pole. Especially as about a week before playing in sunny and hot Rock in Rio.
Speaking of Painkiller, please check out the Painkiller interview in this month’s updates. Also, try giving the HOSTILE Player (here; right-hand-side) a spin as it contains part of the song ‘Addiction’ that I composed especially for the band. Hostile are a young, hard-hitting metal band from my home town, lead singer Jay is just 18 years old. They have just played in Birmingham supporting HATEBREED and are currently performing showcase gigs for prospective record companies with the hope of getting a release date for their debut album Eve Of Destruction. That was also produced by me.
O.K. I am going to keep this blog nice and short as I am sure you all have lots of presents and stuff to wrap. Again, have a great holiday season, my special thanks as always to the dedicated Millworkers and their families and here’s to a rocking metal 2011!”
As mentioned, Downing is interviewed by the Steel Mill’s Jari Asell about the 20th Anniversary of Judas Priest’s legendary Painkiller opus. Here are a few excerpts from the chat:
Steel Mill: Your album Painkiller just passed the 20 years mark. Let’s go back in time when you finished the Ram It Down-Mercenaries Of Metal -Tour. You had a triumphant decade, did you have any thoughts about how to begin the 1990s?
Downing: “No, I don’t think so, I think as musicians/songwriters it’s always a case of not being sure of what will happen until you get your teeth into the songwriting and seeing what comes out, then depending on what does, the precedent is set for everything else.
Steel Mill: When writing songs, was your goal to produce Priest’s heaviest album (that far)?
Downing: “Not initially, but as the album started to grow we enjoyed the energy that we were creating. Now that we had Scott, we were sure going to see what he had in the tank.
Steel Mill: You had a wonderful time (1979-1988) with “Colonel” Tom Allom. How did you come to choose your old buddy (Sad Wings Of Destiby/1976) Chris Tsangarides to produce Painkiller?
Downing: “I am not totally sure, but Tom may have been involved with other things and it seemed a nice idea to meet up and work with Chris again.”
Steel Mill: The Painkiller stage set was phenomenal, a real statement in conjuction of the album theme. The support bands were among the hardest as well: MEGADETH and TESTAMENT, and later PANTERA and ANNIHILATOR. Any anecdotes you would like to share here?
Downing: “Yes! A very enjoyable tour and memories, I speak of it quite often, in fact I was just telling some friends yesterday how we went sightseeing in Rome with Pantera to the Coliseum and places like that. We had many laughs together on that tour, I can never forget that Dime R.I.P used to go busking in the streets, I saw a piece of film once with him doing that, it was so funny, in fact I will check if I can find it on YouTube, it’s a must to see. There was so much talent in Pantera and Annihilator and they were so humble, it must have been very tough for them and all of their crews to share one bus. They used to crack us up so much when they would form a queue outside our dressing rooms in the hope that we would spot them some beers, which of course we always did. Happy days!”
SYMFONIA, the new band featuring former STRATOVARIUS guitarist Timo Tolkki and ex-ANGRA / ex-SHAMAN frontman Andre Matos, has posted video footage from Studiomega in Varberg, Sweden. Check out two clips below.
Following is the official Symfonia press release:
The new melodic power metal super-group Symfonia begins recording its debut album on November 25th at Studio Mega in Sweden. They will start with the drum tracks of the renowned drummer Uli Kusch (ex-Helloween). The band will record 12 songs that some journalists, having already heard some of the tracks, have described as a “homecoming.”
Symfonia has signed a four album deal with the biggest Japanese metal and rock label, Marquee Avalon, for the territory of the entire Asian region, including China. Negotiations with the other territories are still in progress. Symfonia has also launched a new website that contains brand new video interviews of guitarist Timo Tolkki and vocalist Andre Matos (ex-Angra).
The tentative release date for the yet-to-be-named debut album is March 25th, 2011.
As previously reported, Symfonia will make its World Premiere on February 18th at the Finnish Metal Expo, an International Metal Meeting, where they will take the stage at 11:00pm in the evening.
Check out BW&BK’s exclusive interview with Timo Tolkki here. An excerpt is available below.
“Everything with Symfonia has been very fast,” Tolkki reveals. “I don’t want to use the word ‘pre-destined’, but after Revolution Renaissance I said, ‘That’s it, I’m opening the flower store…’ (laughs). It’s a weird story. It all started with Andre Matos because someone told me that he’s living in Sweden now, in a village of something like 2,000 people. He comes from Sao Paulo, a city of 25 million people. I began thinking about it, that I had one of the best power metal vocalists practically living next to me. I know the guy very well, and I had nothing to do. I gave him a call and asked if he wanted to write some music, and Andre came to visit me in Helsinki. He spent the week here, went to sauna – where I showed the Brazilian what ‘hot’ really means (laughs) – and we worked on some music.”
“The next one was Jari. Everybody thinks he was fired from Stratovarius (in 2005) but he actually decided to leave on his own for personal reasons. He’s living in Norway now. I never had problems with him because Jari has this kind of Buddhist philosophy, and I always told him that I wished I could be like him (laughs). After he left EVERGREY (earlier this year) he was in another band, and the strange thing was he left that band on a Tuesday and I emailed him by chance on the Wednesday. I had no idea he didn’t have a band. We talked for about three hours on the phone and I felt like I was in a time warp, because I hadn’t seen him in five years. It really wasn’t a big issue having him come on board.”
“After I had Andre and Jari on board I went back and listened to my whole discography from beginning to end. I actually had to borrow the CD (laughs) because I didn’t have any of them. I tried to get a picture of what I’ve done so far, and I came to the conclusion that I need to crystallize what I’m all about. With these guys I can do that.”
Radio Metal has issued an interview with MOTÖRHEAD’s Phil Campbell. Notably, Phil strongly expresses his discontent towards Lemmy: 49% Motherf**ker, 51% Son Of A Bitch film makers:
Q: You and Mikkey rarely appear in the movie. How come? You’ve been his bandmates for so long…
A: “Speak to the movie people! That’s what we’re pissed off about. They spent three years following me around and Mikkey around, all of us, you know, three fucking years and the biggest shot they got of me is laying down to sleep in the bus with Familly Guy on the TV! (Laughs) The movie’s about Lem but it’s really insulting to us. What a bunch of cunts!”
On an other subject, Phil reveals that the next Motörhead album might be a cover album: “I had the idea to do an acoustic album. We might also do a cover album. Our next album might be this album of cover. We’ve done loads of these. We’ve done ‘Cat Scratch Fever’, we’ve done ‘Shoot ‘Em Down’ by TWISTED SISTER, ‘Hellraiser’ by OZZY, ‘God Save The Queen’ by the SEX PISTOLS, we got ‘Rockaway Beach’ by the RAMONES and more. But this album is just an idea for the future, we don’t know yet what’s going to be on it.”
Phil also talks about the book he just began to write: “I’m doing my book at the moment; it’s going to contain a lot of funny stories. It’s a book about all the fucking unbelievable shit that goes down on the road ! (Laughs) Funny stuff, yeah. It’s not going to be about my life’s story, that’s boring! But we don’t know yet when it’s going to be released. We’re starting it now but I guess we can expect it to be out in about three years.”
The already-larger-than-life Motörhead mainman Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister is headed to the big screen this winter, as the acclaimed new documentary Lemmy: 49% Motherf**ker, 51% Son Of A Bitch (Damage Case Films/Megaforce) is confirmed for theatrical bookings around the country.
The first round of screenings to be announced include: New York City (Cinema Village, opening January 28), Austin (The Draft House Downtown, January 14-21), Seattle (Film Forum, February 4-10), Portland, OR (Clinton St. Theater, January 14-21), and Atlanta (The Plaza Theatre, opening January 14).
More cities will be announced soon.
Critics around the world can’t get enough of Lemmy. The film won the Best Documentary prize at the In Edit Film Festival in Santiago, Chile last weekend, and it’s been a major hit at dozens of other international festivals, including screenings in France, England, Germany, Spain, Australia, The Netherlands, and South Korea. Currently in theaters in the UK, Lemmy has recently sold out screenings in Paris, Berlin and Tokyo, where it was rated by one firm as the second most popular film in theaters last weekend.
The DVD, a-two disc set packed with more than four hours of bonus features, will be released February 15 and will be available for digital download and on Blu-ray. Filmed over more than three years, and directed by Greg Olliver and Wes Orshoski, “Lemmy” features appearances by artists spanning the musical spectrum, from METALLICA, OZZY OSBOURNE and SLASH to Peter Hook (NEW ORDER, JOY DIVISION), Mick Jones (THE CLASH) and Jarvis Cocker.

Official trailers for Lemmy can be viewed below:
Lemmy will be released in the UK, Germany, France and Scandinavia on DVD by Entertainment One on January 24, 2011.
Greg Olliver and Wes Orshoski spent three years following Kilmister around the globe – from his Hollywood home to the hockey arenas of Russia.
Hailed as a godfather of heavy metal, 64-year-old Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister has established himself as the living embodiment of rock and roll over the past four decades. After stints with popular Mersey beat band THE ROCKIN’ VICKERS and influential psychedelic rockers HAWKWIND, and even a brief time spent as a member of JIMI HENDRIX’ road crew, Lemmy formed Motörhead in 1975.
Going on to record such influential metal classics as ‘Overkill’, ‘Ace of Spades’ and ‘Bomber’, the Grammy Award-winning Motörhead and Kilmister’s fusion of punk and metal registered a major influence on such bands as METALLICA, GUNS N’ ROSES and NIRVANA.
Members of METALLICA, VELVET REVOLVER, ANTHRAX, HENRY ROLLINS and other stars talk about who would play Lemmy in a movie, from the amazing bonus section on Lemmy: 49% Motherf**ker, 51% Son Of A Bitch. Check it out on YouTube below:
2010 marks the 35th anniversary of the birth of Motörhead, which features Kilmister, guitarist Phil Campbell and drummer Mikkey Dee.
Motörhead has announced their 2011 North American tour dates to celebrate the band’s 35th anniversary and the release their new studio album, The Wörld Is Yours, on February 8th, 2011.
Motörhead are a mindset, a belief, a way to live your life, a way to both survive and beat a society that sometimes seems intent on trying to grind you down. Which is why Motörhead have chosen now, in what might be some of the most tense times in recent global history, to release a hell-raising, rebel-rousing rock’n’roll statement known as The Wörld Is Yours.
If that isn’t enough, the critically-acclaimed documentary about Motörhead’s iconic founding-frontman, titled Lemmy, which has been tearing up the worldwide film festival circuit from New York to Melbourne to London and beyond, will premiere nationally in January.
“We don’t fit into anything!” roars founder and heartbeat Lemmy Kilmister,”the only thing we fit into is ‘Motörhead’ because we are Motörhead music and that’s what we do!”

It was a great experience so I was honored when they asked me if I would be interested in doing a Metal Grooves pack of my own. SWEDEN – Swedish melodic death metal titan, Arch Enemy, has begun recording a new studio album, the long awaited successor to 2007’s acclaimed Rise Of The Tyrant album. After releasing the Tyrants Of The Rising Sun – Live In Japan live DVD/CD (2008) and the re-recordings album, The Root Of All Evil (2009), the band’s ninth studio album will mark a return to new, original material.
The yet-to-be-named album will be self-produced by Arch Enemy, and engineered/mixed by Rickard Bengtsson (whom produced 2005’s Doomsday Machine). The band has recently entered Sweetspot Studio in the south of Sweden for the album’s recording process, and drummer Daniel Erlandsson, who just finished off tracking his parts, checked in with the following report:
“After an intense but inspiring stay in the studio, I’ve just completed recording the drum tracks for the upcoming Arch Enemy album! We’re working once again with Rickard Bengtsson, who produced ‘Doomsday Machine’, and he quickly dialed in an absolutely pristine drumtone! I’ve also had the expertise of local drum guru Beppe Wackelin at hand, helping out with tuning and kindly letting me use some of his vintage drums. This time around I’ve used a Pearl Reference drum kit, while incorporating various snare drums on songs that demanded a slightly different feel.
We had a very inspiring and creative time writing this album, I think this is definitely evident when listening to the new songs. There’s tons of variation in the material, ranging all the way from very melodic to extremely heavy. As you can expect there’s no shortage of killer riffs and intricate guitar work, the Amott Bros have come up with some very cool yet demanding ideas! This album has some of the fastest songs I’ve ever recorded, along with a bunch of heavy pounding mid tempo songs. As always, it’s difficult to describe music in words – but rest assured – this album will be one heavy fucker!”
A video of Daniel recording can be seen below:
The band has confirmed several summer dates and festivals in support of the forthcoming album.

MARIONETTE Signs Worldwide Publishing Deal With Warner/Chappell Music Scandinavia; In Mixing Mode; Video Diary From UK Headline Tour Available
Gothenburg Sweden based metal sextet MARIONETTE has signed a worldwide
publishing deal with Warner/Chappell Music Scandinavia (MESHUGGAH,
SABATON). The band is currently mixing its as-of-yet-untitled third album
with Pontus Hjelm (DEAD BY APRIL) at Studio PH in Gothenburg Sweden.
Commented by Warner/Chappell Music Scandinavia’s Sanken Sandqvist:
“Sweden has continued to produce quality metal acts for over twenty years
now. But MARIONETTE stands out above all for its focus on creating quality
metal that is innovative and unconventional, while putting on an excellent,
interactive, live show that is above and beyond what most bands with dudes
in jeans and t-shirts can do in concert. We look forward to working with
these young guys from Gothenburg and helping them grow to new heights.”
Guitarist, backing vocalist, and founding member Aron Parmerud added:
“We are proud to announce that we have signed with Warner Chappell for
publishing our previous two albums and our future material. This worldwide
deal will give us the support of one of the worlds largest publishing
companies, allowing us to focus on creating new and innovative music, which
has been our goal since 2005.
“Everyone at the MARIONETTE camp has been 100% focused on the mixing of
our third album, which is occurring (as I type) at Studio PH with Pontus
Hjelm. This album is by far our most mature release to date; there are a
lot of new elements we are introducing to the MARIONETTE sound. We expect
to turn a lot of heads with this release, and so far the response to the
new material we played live on our “The SlaughTour 2010” headline tour
of the UK and dates with DARK TRANQUILLITY earlier this year was received
extremely well both by MARIONETTE fans and people who have never seen or
heard us before. After our album is mastered in January we look forward to
getting back on the road and sharing more new material with everyone who
sees us live next year. Some titles of tracks on the album are
‘Something Forgotten’, ‘Remember Your Name’, ‘Stand In Line’
and ‘Lights Out’.”
MARIONETTE recently concluded its “The SlaughTour 2010” UK headline
tour and Scandinavian dates supporting Dark Tranquillity: the first tour
dates featuring new vocalist Alexander Andersson (ELDRIMNER) who joined the
band in the spring. The second video diary from the headline tour can be

“…a stoner dream from start to finish, incorporating dusty, doom metal elements with a hint of California sunshine added for good measure. Dusted Angel’s doom falls in line with traditional acts like 70’s era Pentagram and Saint Vitus’ more rockin’ moments, which is to say, a fine thing indeed.” – Metal-Rules“
…no doom fan should miss out on Dusted Angel.” – Hellride Music
“…a solid band with a wealth of experience that more than pays off on Earth Sick Mind. They’ve played with Fu Manchu, Nebula, Saviours, Saint Vitus and Black Cobra, and I can wholeheartedly recommend Dusted Angel to any fan of those bands.” – The Sleeping Shaman “…plenty of huge, infectious riffs, a thick production with a nicely audible bass, hard hitting percussion, and a gruff wail from vocalist Clifford Dinsmore all come together to produce a solid stoner metal album.” – About.com
