Varathron – Stefan NecroAbyssious

The Greek black/occult metal scene has always had unique and original bands since the late 80′s when Rotting Christ and Varathron, and later Necromantia, rose from the world beyond. These three hellenic occult black metal bands carved their own marks into the metal underground in the 90′s when they put out legendary releases. For example: ONE STEP BEYOND by Varathron, the legendary Rotting Christ/Monumentum spilt Ep, and the split album of Varathron and Necromantia. However, Varathron has battled through these years by facing the ups and downs, but the band’s leader Stefan NecroAbyssious is still committed to Varathron. Here is the interview with Stefan telling about the new album and other interesting issues in the world of Varathron.

Fatal Smile live at The Rock Copenhagen Denmark
Fatal Smile
Neo Natural Freaks Tour
The Rock, Copenhagen
Denmark, 22/6 – 2006
Review & pictures by Anders Sandvall
Even though the World Cup of Soccer seemed to hold Scandinavia in a steady grip it was time for me to take the train over to Copenhagen to witness one of the new up and coming bands from Sweden. This Swedish act plays heavy 80’s hard rock mixed with dirty glam/sleaze party rock’n’roll and is called Fatal Smile. I’d really looked forward to seeing the guys live because their latest album NEO NATURAL FREAKS literally blew my head off.

On the eve of one of their biggest performances of the year at the launch of 2006’s Rue Morgue Festival of Fear, MATADORS singer/guitarist HOOCH was left stunned and devastated this morning when he learned that a weekend break-in at the Burlington, ON home of CREEPSHOW frontwoman Jen Blackwood resulted in the loss of a number of valued possessions (detailed below), including Hooch’s one-of-a-kind Fender Jazzmaster guitar, color: tobacco sunburst w/ red pick guard.
The 1962 re-issue guitar is not only unique in its composition, but more importantly it is priceless in sentimental value.

The Matadors and Stereo Dynamite would like to implore all media / fans / supporters of the band to do anything they can or wish to do in order to assist in locating the stolen guitar. Searching pawn shops in the Southern Ontario area (especially in the Burlington / Hamilton area) and the GTA, alerting guitar shops + instrument stores that buy & sell used equipment, checking popular sites like Ebay and Craigslist.com, checking message boards and spreading the word as much as possible would be infinitely appreciated both by the band and their label – there’s power in numbers!!

MTM MUSIC is proud to announce the release of the brand new ZENO album “Runway To The Gods”!
It always takes many years until ZENO pleases AOR and Classic Rock fans with a new album. But when the album is finally released – it’s always a masterpiece! Now, 8 years after “Listen To The Light“, ZENO returns with another rock jewel called “Runway To The Gods“!
In 1984, Zeno Roth the younger brother of ULI JON ROTH formed the band ZENO with ULE RITGEN (FAIR WARNING). ZENOs self-titled first album “ZENO” was released in 1985 and toured with BLACK SABBATH, KROKUS, KEEL and also played a festival with QUEEN in the UK. His first album, the follow-up “Zenology” and “Listen To The Light” reached many different charts, #25 in the ‘Foreign Music Charts’ and #2 in the ‘Rock Music Charts’ among others.
In 2004, MTM CLASSIX re-released ZENOs self-titled debut album from 1985 and “Zenology II” which was a compilation of previously unreleased ZENO songs.
After 8 years the wait is finally over: “Runway To The Gods“ is a masterpiece of finest musicianship, song writing and production. Sophisticated arrangements with strong melodies and an outstanding instrumentation make this album play in heavy rotation. With “Runway To The Gods”, Zeno Roth impressively proves what a fantastic musician he is: he recorded most of the album on his own and even performed the lead vocals on one song. The other lead vocals are handled by no other than former JADED HEART singer Michael Bormann, who delivers an awesome performance on this album. Truly a highlight!
The release of “Runway To The God” is scheduled on MTM MUSIC in October 20, 2006.

TALISMAN to release new disc
Frontiers Records is excited to reveal the details behind TALISMAN upcoming studio album “7” to be released on October 20th 2006.
Recorded under the working title of “Bar” which was dropped in the end in favour of the more immediate “7”, TALISMAN’s brand new album sees once again the combination of four amazing talents flourishing to the highest levels. The experienced swedish bass player and songwriter Marcel Jacob (ex Yngwie Malmsteen) teamed once again with US vocal sensation Jeff Scott Soto (SOUL SIRKUS and now with JOURNEY), drummer Jamie Borger (TREAT) and guitarist Fredrik Akesson (now the second axeman in the Heavy Metal legends ARCH ENEMY) to give birth to a sensational new recording that, according to Jacob, “might simply be our best ever”.
“I am much pleased with the result”, adds Marcel “more so than I’ve been in a while. There are a number of tracks that came out really well and I am quite curious as to what the response will be. As a songwriter I tried to write this time more for “other ears” than mine, trying to perceive what others could have liked from what we have been doing before… also this time we tried to go for some ballad and this was a sort of new challenge for us”.
“7” is therefore an album that encompasses several music styles, still keeping intact all the magical elements of the TALISMAN trademark: groovy rhythms, soaring and instantly hummable hooklines, aggressive guitar parts and melodies all the way.
Final tracklisting of “7” shall be as follows:
Falling; Nowhere Fast; Rhyme Or Reason; End of the Line; The 1 I’m Living 4; On My Way; Forevermore; Succumb 2 My Desire; Shed a Tear Goodbye; Troubled Water; Back 2 the Feeling.
Release of the album shall happen on Frontiers Records on October 20th 2006 with a Japanese release on King Records

CRASH KELLY COMMENTS ON POISON, ALICE COOPER SHOWS
Toronto glam rock quartet begins California blitzkrieg
Glam rock quartet CRASH KELLY – whose new album, the Gilby Clarke-produced Electric Satisfaction, is now available – is in the midst of a series of high-profile gigs. Last week, the band performed a hometown show at Toronto’s Molson Amphitheatre alongside Poison and Cinderella before flying to America to play two shows with Alice Cooper (including a gig at the Sturgis motorcycle rally).
“There was no better way to kick off the dog days of summer than to be on the same bill as two of my childhood favorites,” front man Sean Kelly says about the Poison/Cinderella show. “Despite blazing heat, we managed to rip out a couple of sets that highlighted the new material from Electric Satisfaction, and were pleased to find that the crowd was on board.”
CRASH KELLY already toured Canada with Alice Cooper earlier this year, but Kelly says the second go-round was even better. “Not even the Canadian dates we did with Alice could prepare us for the thrill of sharing the stage with him at two legendary venues. Sturgis saw us performing in front of a crowd of 20,000, and I’m pleased to report that we rose to the occasion. And to a kid growing up in small-town Ontario, Billings, Montana seems like the most exotic of locales, and playing the Shrine Auditorium felt like a true ‘70s-rock revival.”
The group is now in Los Angeles, where CRASH KELLY recorded their new album. Kelly describes the city as the “spiritual home for the band in a lot of ways. It was the early ‘80s Sunset Strip scene that served as one of Crash Kelly’s primary influences. Coming back to the birthplace of Electric Satisfaction is serving as inspiration for bringing these songs to life on the stage. We’re looking forward to playing with L.A. Guns in their hometown, rocking some legendary venues and also looking forward to highlighting some of the often overlooked other influences of the band with our appearance at the International Pop Overthrow. Wrapping it up at Metal Skool should prove to be a fitting cap for our latest rock n’ roll fantasy.”
In other news, CRASH KELLY was named “band of the day” by Spin magazine’s website earlier this week. The feature can be read at this location: http://www.spin.com/features/band_of_the_day/2006/08/060807_crashkelly/

MUSHROOMHEAD To World Premiere Song On WMMS
Mushroomhead will appear live on Cleveland’s WMMS on Friday, August 11, 2006, at 6pm (est) to world premiere the first song from the forthcoming Savior Sorrow album.
The new MUSHROOMHEAD album Savior Sorrow will be released on September 19, 2006. It was produced by Steve Felton and Mushroomhead at Cleveland’s Filthy Hands Studios in April 2006. Mushroomhead’s prior release, XIII, entered the Billboard Top 200 at #40 and went on to sell 400,000 copies worldwide.
“It’s a new chapter in MUSHROOMHEAD’s evolution. There are sounds on this album that sound so brutal and huge. The album is quite diverse, yet retains a Mushroomhead feel. Lyrically, it definitely reflects where the world is at this moment in time,” says drummer Skinny.
The visionary masked band combines theatrics with a mixture of rock, metal and atmospheric elements. The first single will hit radio in mid-August. The band will begin a world tour starting September 20, 2006.

REILY’S HAUNTING LISTEN TO THE RAIN CD RELEASE AND TOUR
`What are songs—what is poetry—if you’re not there, even in violent despair?’ Reily’s debut album Listen to the Rain swirls into ghostly existence with these words on its lips and is permeated by the inquiry through its fourteen gorgeously haunted tracks. The band is about to embark on a Canadian tour that kicks off August 18th in Toronto and will take them to Vancouver and back.
The Reily sound is surprisingly mature given that all the band members are between 19 and 23 years old. This Brampton, Ontario band features Lisa Horvath (voice & keyboards), Megan Bonnell (voice & piano), Anthony James (drums & percussion), Nathan Stretch (Bass) and Nick Bernal (guitars & cello).
Listen to the Rain was independently, produced, tracked, and mixed by Reily in Horvath’s and Bernal’s professional studio Last Ounce Media Productions in Brampton. The result is a pleasing aura of musical community; three songwriters in close collaboration with one another pen Reily’s tunes. Many of the songs touch on substantial topics, like death, illness, loss, forgiveness and reconciliation. They describe their music as indie folk rock, a sound that reflects their classical training, but has a contemporary feel.
As a bonus for the tour, Reily is offering a new unreleased EP We Were Archaeologists with every purchase of Listen To The Rain at the shows.
“The lyrics are thoughtful, with cohesive instrumentation and haunting vocals.” “If you had to make a comparison, their music sounds like The Cranberries’ early material.” – The Brampton Guardian

DEARLY BELOVED RUGGED CASUAL TOUR EXTENDS TO THE WEST
Western tour dates have been added to Dearly Beloved’s Rugged Casual Tour that will take them to British Columbia and back to Ontario. The band is currently taking over Newfoundland and Nova Scotia with tour partners Aide-de-camp featuring Cory Bowles from the Trailer Park Boys. The Populars will join both bands in Thunder Bay for the western tour.
Dearly Beloved recently released its debut You Are The Jaguar on Kindling/Warner Music and immediately received positive reviews and media coverage. There will be no rest for this band on their only two days off home in Toronto in the middle of the tour; Dearly Beloved will be at MTV Live on August 28th and XM Radio on August 29th. The band is also hard at work to complete the video for the first single “Manifesto.” www.dearlybeloved.ca
Press Reviews
“The band combine the grit of old-school punk, the guitars of the new rock revival and a touch of The Velvet Underground, rounded out by a pair of sickly-sweet female harmonies.” – Chart Magazine
“One minute they might be a snarling, drunken rock machine, the next a dreamy, quirky alt unit. Either way, the music stays fresh, which is why Toronto’s Dearly Beloved is onto something with their full-length debut, an album crammed with everything from punk to shoegaze, alt-rock and bazillion little subtleties.” – NOW
“If you are ever tired of the mainstream pop rock sound, Dearly Beloved will give you something fresh and original.” A- Saintrocknroll.com

The Salads long running Salad Gold concert series returns August 18th at the Mod Club in Toronto with performances by The Salads, Pocket Dwellers, New World Son and Chronic Soundsystem. Special guest hosts Darrin Pfeiffer (Goldfinger) and Bowman (Broke Ass Rock Star) will keep you entertained while DJ’s Wigs & Reggie Niceness ensure the crowd grooves between bands.
Salad Gold began in 2000 by The Salads as a way to showcase different musical genres in one concert event and to spotlight bands they themselves enjoyed. Audiences turned out to be a blend of music lovers, breakers, rawkers, hip-hop-headz, metal-headz, hippies, DJs, MCs and beatboxers. The shows always prove to be a major success, therefore, six years later the parties are still going strong. Salad Gold 13 is one you don’t want to miss. www.thesalads.com www.myspace.com/saladgold

Now the time has come to interview the mastermind and leader of the band Loch Vostok, Teddy Möller. The band comes from Uppsala, Sweden. Loch Vostok have been around a few years but have never been interviewed in Metal-Rules.com so I thought it was about time to get in touch with Teddy and talk about Loch Vostok and their new album.

Joacim Carlsson – Guitarist for Face Down
Interviewed by: Anders Sandvall

Face Down is a cult thrash band that recently re-united and released the ass-kicking new album THE WILL TO POWER. My mission was to get in touch with Joacim Hedestedt and ask him some questions about the bands past history, the album and so on but for some reasons he couldn’t do an interview so instead I had the luck to talk with Joacim Carlsson that plays guitar.
