Rafał Piotrowski recording vocals

Rafał Piotrowski recording vocals

Polish technical death metallers DECAPITATED continue their work at Radio Gdańsk Studio in Poland recording their Nuclear Blast debut and follow-up to 2006’s Organic Hallucinosis.

Guitarist & founding member Wacek “Vogg”Kiełtyka checks in once again from the studio:

“All right guys!  We are slowly heading towards the end of the session. We have been here for six weeks now and we can feel the first signs of fatigue but we are still holding tight. We will be recording the vocals for the fifth song today. Rafał[Piotrowski] is in excellent form and his vocals are awesome. We have decided for a more middle range timbre because we felt it was the most powerful one. The vocals contribute a great deal to the intensity of the music and therefore the material has gained even more in its potency and destroying might. I am not going to expand on the lyrics right now as I would like to leave it for later, and the same goes for the music. The author of the lyrics would like to remain anonymous for now. It is a person you all know well and I can only say that the lyrics will be quite controversial and will pertain to our surrounding reality.

“To conclude, we are soon finishing the vocals, starting to record the solos and the album will be set for the mixing, which we have actually started already. Daniel [Bergstrand] is just finishing mixing the drums and starting with the guitars.”

DECAPITATED will soon be announcing the new album’s title and present the album artwork.

DECAPITATED’s fifth studio album is being produced by Wacek Kiełtyka and sound engineered by Malta Arkadiusz Malczewski.  Drums were recorded with Daniel Bergstrand (BEHEMOTH, MESHUGGAH, DIMMU BORGIR, KEEP OF KALESSIN, DEFLESHED), who also handled mixing duties.  The band will be self-releasing the new album in their native Poland.

DECAPITATED’s line-up includes: Wacław “Vogg” Kiełtyka on guitar, Kerim “Krimh” Lechner (Thorns Of Ivy, Tone Intimacy) on drums, Rafał Piotrowski (Ketha, Forgotten Souls) on lead vocals, and Filip “Heinrich” Hałucha (Vesenia, Rootwater, Unsun, Masachist) on bass.

SoundCheck Hollywood’s Grand Opening Postponed Due To City Ordinances; Rescheduled For National Record Store Day On April 16th

March 23rd, 2011
by EvilG

Following a blitzkrieg of promotion announcing SoundCheck Hollywood’s grand opening comes the unfortunate reality of the store’s big day being postponed due in part to the City of West Hollywood and their pesky permits. The hype behind this opening and the slew of RSVP’s for the big Asking Alexandria and I See Stars’ signings tomorrow forced city officials to step in and delay this event for another few weeks.

However, on National Record Store Day (April 16th) the store will be cleared and well primed to launch the biggest celebratory occasion that the Sunset Strip hasn’t seen in years. SoundCheck Hollywood promises this will be a night for the ages for all metal/hard rock fans. That day the store will be giving away free tickets to the Revolver Golden Gods Awards, the Winds Of Plague CD Release show at The Key Club on April 19th, Summer Slaughter and Warped Tour, as well as an ESP guitar.

Thanks for bearing with us and stay tuned to or for all up to date information.

SoundCheck Hollywood (located at 8872 Sunset Blvd.) is essentially a lifestyle music store that will feature CDs, Vinyl and DVDs from all artists spanning the spectrum of the metal/underground rock genres as well as limited edition merch that will cover the walls. SoundCheck Hollywood will truly separate itself from any other store with the unique meet and greet opportunities with bands that takes place in the “backstage” of the store which will differ greatly from your normal autograph signings. Founder Ash Avildsen states: “We want to create an intimate environment that no other store has ever offered fans when they go to meet their favorite artists at a signing. SoundCheck’s backstage will be far different from your typical “move-it-along” setting, i.e. having a line of people looking over your shoulder while you are sharing your coveted moment with the band you came to meet.. and for those waiting in line, free Guns N Roses and Royal Rumble pinball!!!”

EXHORDER played the first concert with its new drummer Seth Davis on December 10, 2010 at The Hangar in the band’s hometown. Video footage of the performance can be viewed below.

Seth had been working closely with longtime EXHORDER sticksman Chris Nail in preparation for taking over drum duties for the band’s live performances as well as the upcoming recordings.

Jyri Vahvanen from Battlelore

March 23rd, 2011
by EvilG
Jyri Vahvanen (guitar/lyrics) from Battlelore

Interviewed by Theis

Battlelore Wiki:
"Battlelore is a metal band from Lappeenranta, Finland. All of Battlelore’s lyrics concern J. R. R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth. Battlelore mixes female vocals with harsh male growling in "beauty and the beast" duet, backed by heavy guitar riffing and occasional keyboard interludes. The band’s style takes elements from gothic metal, folk metal, power metal, and melodic death metal. Because of the ambiguity of Battlelore’s music, different reviewers have labeled the band with each of these, as well as idiosyncratic terms such as "epic metal" or "fantasy metal". Battlelore’s songs are all centered around J. R. R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth. Tolkien inspiration also includes a distinctive stage pseudo-medieval dress and make-up. Battlelore newest album, Doombound, came out in January 2011."

SOUNDGARDEN Release First Ever Live Album

March 23rd, 2011
by Celtic Bob

Soundgarden have just released their first ever live album, Live on I5, which can be streamed in full on the band’s Facebook page.

Titled Live on I5 – a reference to the Interstate 5 which runs up and down the West Coast-  the new collection compiles live tracks from a 1996 run by the band and captures the band at the height of their recording and touring career.  This carefully selected compilation includes fan favorites like “Spoonman”, “Rusty Cage”, “Burden In My Hand,” and “Black Hole Sun” (performed by Chris Cornell solo), as well what insiders are calling the definitive live performance of “Jesus Christ Pose.”  As a bonus, the disc includes two brilliantly inspired covers:  The Beatles’ “Helter Skelter” and The Stooges’ anarchic proto-punk classic, “Search & Destroy.” The band took out recording engineer, Adam Kasper with them on the West Coast leg of this tour- the first time they ever recorded any live shows. They rented a mobile 24 track machine/truck and recorded the gigs on 2″ tape. Soundgarden had always intended to release it as a live record soon after the tour, but alas, they disbanded and the tapes were left in the closet of Studio X in Seattle (now called Bad Animals) to gather dust until now.

Live on I5 is the follow-up to Soundgarden’s celebrated 2010 reunion, with the band re-staking their well deserved place, earning a Grammy nomination for previously unreleased track “Black Rain” for Best Hard Rock Performance, gracing the covers of music magazines SPIN and Guitar World, performing on the second night of Conan and topping critics’ lists with their fall 2010 release, Telephantasm. The multi-label, career-spanning collection, also available in collector’s editions with the band’s first-ever DVD and booklet,  was a comprehensive retrospective of the enormously influential band whose music put Seattle and a young label called Sub Pop on the map.  As befits a group whose sound redefined a musical generation, they also proved themselves to be innovators with their partnership with Guitar Hero, with 1 million copies of Telephantasm sold, bundled within the launch of Guitar Hero®: Warriors of Rock. The album went platinum before even hitting stores- a first time certification for the RIAA.

Soundgarden’s subsequent live appearances had all the chemistry and intensity fans and critics had hoped for with the band’s legendary heavy sound and power intact.  Their headlining Lollapalooza spot last year found the four members playing their classic material from the ‘90s to longtime fans and a new generation who never thought they’d be lucky enough to see them.  Rolling Stone wrote, “Chris Cornell is the ultimate rock frontman” and Spin said, “The band kicked into an epic set that was the sonic equivalent of a blueprint of the Seattle sound: heavy, loud, and full of metal guitar heroics and classic rock pomp.”

With Live on I5, we catch the now-legendary rock titans at the top of their game. The collection captures the rawness, spontaneity and magic that happens at live gigs between Soundgarden and their audiences.  It cements the band’s place in rock history and shows why their appeal is as strong and as timeless as ever.

Based out Winnipeg, Manitoba EVIL SURVIVES first began spreading their metallic mayhem when the in the summer of 2006 Front man Karl “Axe n’ Smash” Warkentin and guitarist Adrian Riff began the arduous task of recruiting like minded metal heads. Finally after three months the search was complete and EVIL SURVIVES was born. By June 2008 EVIL SURVIVES made its first performance- by no coincidence…but fate! – outside of an Iron Maiden concert in their home town of Winnipeg. Less than a month later, EVIL SURVIVES entered the studio to record their debut full length album Metal Vengeance released exclusively on vinyl on War on Music.

On the heels of a growing renown, EVIL SURVIVES were right back in studio by the end of 2009 to record their second full length album, entitled Powerkiller, released by War on Music on vinyl and limited edition cassette. Mixed entirely in analog, the master reels contained over 40 minutes of driving NWOBHM worship, sounding like 1985-2009 never even happened. Powerkiller caught the attention of New York metal merchants HEAVY ARTILLERY RECORDS who released the album on CD and digitally on October 12th 2010.

Touring non-stop across Canada and beyond, EVIL SURVIVES quickly gained a reputation as a ripping live act, with piercing croons, guitar heroics, shotgun bass, and wild antics. Taking the torch from those who came before them, EVIL SURVIVES are positioned to become a leading force for the fight for the rightful return of Heavy Metal… and the execution of false metal everywhere.

ANAL CUNT Announce US Tour

March 22nd, 2011
by EvilG
America’s most hated band, ANAL CUNT, will be taking their shitshow on the road this coming month in support of their latest release,Fuckin’ A (PATAC Records). The tour will kick off in their Boston stomping grounds on May 24th and wind its way across the entire US throughout the month of April. A European tour is also in the works for later this year. No one is safe!

ANAL CUNT have been shocking, appalling, and causing grievous bodily harm to audiences all over the world since 1988,  peddling their ultraviolent noise-riddled grindcore and giving birth to some of the most hilarious (and hideously offensive) song titles in heavy metal history. Like GG Allin and the Dwarves before them, ANAL CUNT practice what they preach, gleefully embracing their own degeneracy and weathering an endless storm of drug busts, jail time, riots, controversy, and a drug-induced coma with two middle fingers aloft. Love them or hate them – they don’t give a fuck either way.

3. Loudest Stereo
4. Kickin’ Your Ass And Fuckin’ Your Bitch
5. Hot Girls On The Road

9. Yay! It’s Pink!
10. I Wish My Dealer Was Open

Fuckin’ A” absolutely guts every cock rock cliche from stem to sternum.” – Metal Underground

“Reviewing an Anal Cunt album is probably the shittiest thing I’ve done this week.” – Stereokiller

“Even when the jokes fall flat, it’s all played loud enough, hard enough, straight enough to not even matter. Sounds from a shriveled sac so goddamn obnoxious and catchy it’s almost enough to make up for Lord Petrus’s sudden croakage.” – Left Hand Path

The final two tracks are just genius though and are definitely my personal highlights. Closing your album that mocks the 80s with a soppy ballad entitled ‘I Wish My Dealer Was Open’ is just pure fucking class. Typical Anal Cunt. If you have avoided their music up until now this album may be your gateway into enjoying their sound.” – The Number of the Blog

Fuckin’ A is one of those Anal Cunt releases that shy away from being spastic manifestations of primal anger, ignorance and stupidity in favor of simply being funny.” – Metal Storm

” Putnam sounds like AC/DC’s Brian Johnson on a coke binge after smoking a carton of cigarettes.” – Kik Axe Music

Leaman had worked with Gutierrez previously and said that he was really easy to work with. From the first telephone conversation it was clear that Gutierrez understood exactly what we were looking for sonically and he seemed really interested in helping us achieve that.”

“We let Kevin know we wanted this album to sound very musical; not just be heavy. We wanted to use the whole frequency range and not have all the mids scooped out so that everything going on in the tunes was audible. Most importantly, we wanted to keep the dynamics. We were a little nervous about not being there physically for the mix, but we spent so much time tweaking in the sounds for tracking that we were confident he had good stuff to work with. The rough mixes we made for ourselves already sounded pretty decent.”

“Kevin was fast and efficient. He’d send us reference mixes as he completed each song and we’d be emailing/texting comments back and forth at all hours of the day and night. He was very responsive to our change requests and was really helpful in setting up the mastering session and communicating what we wanted to Maor Appelbaum of Maor Appelbaum Mastering. Maor also understood what we were trying to achieve with the dynamics and the overall listening experience we wanted to create on this album.”

“Sonically we’re extremely happy with this album and can’t wait for other people to hear it. We feel like this is a really strong and unique album in the BELIEVER catalog and it’s something we’re definitely proud of.”

“So what will you hear? We focused more on the overall musicality which included more instrumental layers than we used before. The vocals were also more of a focus as we have had much feedback throughout the years, specifically to get out of the one dimensional realm. Kurt wanted the vocals to be more complimentary to the overall tune feel, so he used many facets of his vocal abilities. As with all Believer albums, this one is definitely unique.”

Transhumanism: The study of the ramifications, promises, and potential dangers of technologies that will enable us to overcome fundamental human limitations, and the related study of the ethical matters involved in developing and using such technologies.

Immensely heavy, deceptively melodic, ambitiously daring, and brilliantly played. BELIEVER’s brand new concept album TRANSHUMAN available everywhere April 12!

Joey Daub – drums

Jeff King – keyboards/guitars

Pain - You Only Live Twice

Pain - You Only Live Twice

Swedish industrial metallers PAIN have revealed the cover artwork (below) for the bands upcoming album You Only Live Twice.

Commented mainman & producer Peter Tägtgren: “I really wanted something with a Nightmare Before Christmas meetsAlice In Wonderland kind of feeling but with our mascot, the painhead in it. The artist Heile created what I wanted but did it in his own way. It really has this kind of Tim Burton feel to it. It will be really crazy on a big backdrop. We’re also gonna do some inflatable stuff with our Painhead. Its gonna be our Eddie, like IRON MAIDEN has.”

You Only Live Twice is set to be released on June 3 (Europe) and June 21 (North America) 2011 via Nuclear Blast!

Californian thrashers BONDED BY BLOOD are currently shredding their way around Europe on a co-headlining tour with LAZARUS A.D.

The tour is BONDED BY BLOOD’s first outing in Europe with new frontman MAURO GONZALEZ.  Following the first leg of the tour in the UK, the band are now in mainland Europe where bassist JERRY GARCIA has been keeping a tour diary of the band’s antics.

An excerpt from JERRY’s latest tour update follows:

“Hey what’s up guys!  Just checking in here from Vienna in Austria.  We had some incredibly epic nights recently and the highlights without a doubt are Zurich, Switzerland and Prague, Czech Republic!  The fans out there absolutely kick ass.  We had fans hanging from the ceiling, singing our songs, jumping on stage, buying us all sorts of alcoholic beverages, buying us pizza!  Great times in both of these countries.  It is such an honor to be able to come halfway across the globe and meet people that want nothing more than to spend some time with you and have a beer or two.  It is an incredibly humbling experience and one I will never forget.

“The scenery out here is rad!  Everything looks so epic that it is hard to explain.  After touring nothing but North America I am happy to see a forest where different kinds of trees grow and animals live, or buildings that were built hundreds of years ago compared to the skyscrapers of New York.

“Lately we all came down with a bit of a cold and cough.  We’re doing better now and the great catering we get every night is helping us get back to 100% way faster than any of the times we’ve been sick on tour in the States when all we have to eat sometimes is a McDouble and tap water.”

AUTOPSY TO RELEASE VINYL EDITION OF ‘MACABRE ETERNAL’; Long-awaited studio album from death metal legend out in May

March 22nd, 2011
by EvilG

CALIFORNIA – San Francisco Bay Area death metal legend, Autopsy, has completed recording its long-awaited fifth studio album, Macabre Eternal, due out May 31st on Peaceville Records. The band has announced that it will release a special vinyl edition of the forthcoming musical massacre before the CD and digital versions hit stores, available exclusively through the Peaceville web-store at: on May 16th.

Autopsy drummer/vocalist, Chris Reifert, states, “We’ve brewed up the sickest and heaviest material that our rotten souls could possibly spew forth, and we are confident that it’s our best stuff yet. The EP was a taste of what’s to come, but now it’s time for the full assault from beyond the grave.

“The album will contain no repeated EP tracks, no re-recorded old songs, no triggered trickery, and nothing less than the pure death metal brutality that Autopsy has always delivered.”

One of the early breed of US death metal acts, and most respected names in the genre, Autopsy formed in 1987 in San Francisco, and released 4 albums on Peaceville Records – beginning with the classic debut Severed Survival in 1989 – before disbanding in 1995, with members going on to form Abscess.

Autopsy triumphantly and officially returned from the grave after a 15 year hiatus with the 2010 EP, ‘The Tomb Within’, delighting critics and fans alike.

Autopsy also celebrated this long overdue return with three headlining festivals at Maryland Deathfest, PartySan and Hole in the Sky, featuring friend, Dan Lilker (Brutal Truth, Nuclear Assault), on bass.

The band will play several 2011 festival dates in support of Macabre Eternal.

Stay tuned for more information on Autopsy and Macabre Eternal.

Autopsy is…

Chris Reifert – drums/vocals

Danny Coralles – guitar

Eric Cutler – guitar

Joe Trevisano – bass

Now it can be said. Or rather, shouted out loud, from the tops of buildings and mountains: HEAVY MTL is again bringing you a line-up sure to unite tens of thousands of hard rock and metal fans for an unparalleled, mind-blowing weekend at Parc Jean-Drapeau.
And you know when KISS shows up in town, it’s going to bring the mayhem to a whole new level. Continuing their decades-old relationship with Montrealers, the most influential hard rock band of all time bring their record-breaking, genre-defining, bone- crunching pyrotechnic theatrics to Parc Jean-Drapeau. Groundhogs and ducks: time to take cover! And stay under cover for awhile as  Disturbed brings back their dark, winding riffs to the stage, joining  the bombastic power of Godsmack’s nu metal and Juno-award winner Billy Talent’s indie-ish hard rock as they crank the levels sky-high.
Add to that the sonic wall of one of the originators of the new wave of British metal and you’ve got a party goin’ on – Motörhead will be sure to keep the guitar gods happy. As well as Anthrax, one of the Big Four of thrash metal, prog-metallers Opeth and even more of the biggest and best hard rock and heavy metal perpetrators around.
Last year’s second edition of HEAVY MTL saw 42,500 faithful bang their heads in unison and enjoy the heaviness that is HEAVY.  This year that call to hard rock and heavy metal fans goes even further and reaches out down the 401 as the event expands to include the HEAVY T.O. weekend, which launches its first assault on Toronto’s Downsview Park. Why have all the fun in one place: It’s time for Toronto’s fans of hard and heavy rock to stand up and count to ‘11’ on their amps. If you like your music loud and your t-shirts black, you’ll be embarrassed if you’re caught anywhere else this summer!
Tickets for HEAVY MTL go on sale this Saturday, March 26 at noon via Be sure to check out, Facebook page and Twitter account for news and updates before the festival goes on sale Saturday.
