Sweden’s AMON AMARTH are currently gearing up to unleash, Surtur Rising, the eighth studio offering in their critically revered pantheon of Viking-inspired death metal. Named in tribute to Surtur, leader of the fire giants of Muspelheim (“flame land”) and the oldest being in the nine worlds of Norse mythology, the record, which was listed among Decibel Magazine’s most anticipated albums of 2011, features 10 tracks of sword-wielding, fist-pumping, hyper climactic battle anthems. The follow up to 2008’s monolithic Twilight Of The Thunder God full-length, was recorded again at Fascination Street Studios Örebro, Sweden with Jens Bogren and features strikingly brutal cover art by Tom Thiel.
Surtur Rising Track Listing:
01. War of the Gods
02. Töck’s Taunt – Loke’s Treachery Part II
03. Destroyer of the Universe
04. Slaves of Fear
05. Live Without Regrets
06. The Last Stand of Frej
07. For Victory or Death
08. Wrath of the Norsemen
09. A Beast Am I
10. Doom Over Dead Man
As an unofficial kick off to its release, AMON AMARTH will make a live appearance on the long anticipated 70,000 Tons Of Metal cruise, scheduled to take place from January 24th – 28th. The voyage will begin in Miami, Florida, make its way to Cozumel, Mexico and play host to 40 bands including Voivod, Sodom, Iced Earth, Fear Factory and Obituary. Surtur Rising will be released in North America on March 29, 2011 via Metal Blade Records.
Today legendary Finnish melodic metal troupe STRATOVARIUS unleashed their thirteenth studio album, Elysium, to North American fans. Recorded at 5-By-5 studios in Pitäjänmäki, Helsinki, Finland, the nine-track full-length will is available via Armoury Records and features the gorgeous cover art of Gyula Havancsák. In an advance review, About.com called Elysium “one of STRATOVARIUS‘ strongest CDs in years.” Noted SMN News: “The record bristles with gorgeous keyboard landscapes, fiery solos, and the most glorious choruses this side of Gamma Ray,” while Blistering added: “STRATOVARIUS haven’t sounded this focused and on-point since they seemed poised to overtake the melodic metal world over a decade ago.”
In conjunction with the record’s release, Loudtrax.com is currently selling Elysium for the low price of $6.66. For more info, point your browser HERE.
3 INCHES OF BLOOD made a huge splash on the heavy metal community with the release of their last epic ‘Here Waits Thy Doom’, now the band is preparing for an exciting tour as direct support to ELUVEITIE, but before that gets started they will be making a quick pit stop into Shostroud Productions in Vancouver to record a couple of their new cuts with Sho Murray (City of Fire) and Byron Stroud (Strapping Young Lad, Fear Factory). One of the songs will be played live on the upcoming tour and will be making its way online soon. The band comments:
“It’s a great time for us to be touring North America again. We haven’t slugged it out in the US since Mayhem fest in summer 2010 and we’re always happy to play to our loyal Canadian brethren. Everyone in the 3IOB camp have been eagerly anticipating this tour. We’ve never toured with a band like Eluveitie before. Their fan base is probably more similar to ours than most other bands we’ve toured with in the past. The Holy Grail guys are always fun to hang out with and we’re curious to check out System Divide. We’re extra pumped for this tour because it will give us the opportunity to road-test a new song or two. Hope everyone digs the new jams.”
Following a tragic car accident on November 3rd, 2008, Chi Cheng, bassist of the world renowned hard rock band, The Deftones, has been in a state of semi-consciousness after suffering severe TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury).
Under the supervision of Dr. DeFina, Chief Scientific Officer and founder of International Brain Research Foundation (http://www.ibrfinc.org/), Chi has shown remarkable signs of recovery. Although great strides and great progress have been made in administering a pioneering method of treatment to wake Chi up, funds are needed to continue Chi’s treatment and bring him back to total consciousness.
Chi’s mother, Jeanne Cheng, her son and Chi’s brother, Ming Cheng, and family friends Gina Blackmore and Dennis Morrow have been working tirelessly to raise awareness and money for towards continuing Chi’s treatment. Benefit shows have already commenced, and on Saturday, January 22nd, WAKE UP FEST, a series of shows around the world that will be donating 100% of their ticket sales to the cause, will continue. A complete list of shows can be found at http://wakeupfest.com/.
But it doesn’t end on the 22nd. Shows are being scheduled well into 2011, and will continue to roll on as long as people are willing to play and raise money for the cause. On top of the benefit shows, national recording artists are being asked to donate $.25 from their ticket sales from any specified show to help get Chi to a treatment facility in New Jersey for six months of rehabilitation. Relocation is still an issue, and anyone willing to donate a motor home, tour bus, or any other mode of transportation to get Chi from coast to coast is urged to contact the family at www.oneloveforchi.com.
If you give to one charity this year, let it be this one. Individual donations can be made through www.oneloveforchi.com. So many beautiful people have come together to raise money for a phenomenal human being who deserves a second chance; what better way than through music, something so near and dear to Chi, that has the power to unite people of all races and creeds across the globe for positive change. Come out to the shows and be a part of this truly amazing movement.
Not yet satiated by the free booze and such available to them over the last few American jaunts, hardcore blues band EYEHATEGOD again prepare to ride around in a small crappy van and get as unhealthy as possible. The games will commence this February with a blatant hit to the Pacific Northwest in Seattle, Washington on February 5th at El Corazon. The performance will coincide with the club’s six-year anniversary. From there, the depraved New Orleans-based sludge miscreants will preach to the unwashed masses in the following cities:
EYEHATEGOD – February 2011 U.S. Tour 2/05/2011 El Corazon – Seattle, WA
2/16/2011 JB’s – Philadelphia, PA
2/17/2011 Sonar – Baltimore, MD
2/18/2011 Europa – Brooklyn, NY
2/19/2011 Lucien’s Entertainment Complex – Syracuse, NY
2/20/2011 Lido’s – Boston, MA
2/21/2011 Daniel St. – Milford, CT
2/25/2011 Siberia – New Orleans, LA
Ending the whole fiasco will be the annual EYEHATEGOD Mardi Gras show on February 25 in New Orleans with guests, crust/grind legends Phobia and Texas newcomers Venomous Maximus.
In related news, N’Awlin’s sickest brothers of the riff have a brand new website at: http://www.eyehategod.ee. Go forth and destroy.
KIUAS, whose vocalist Ilja Jalkanen last year officially left the band because his musical tastes have changed, now had one final concert with Ilja, which took place at Nosturi, Helsinki, on January 15. Ilja will not leave the stage, just sing other kinds of music.
At their previous gig at Pakkahuone, Tampere, on October 29, 2010, KIUAS performed with stand-in-vocalist Asim Searah [THE NIBIRUAN], who also was a guest at Ilja’s farewell-concert.
The whole evening, including the other bands on the schedule, AMORAL and RYTMIHÄIRIÖ, was under the headline of being dedicated to a late friend to all of these bands (and many more Finnish musicians), Lauri Mailasalo. He was the bass player of CODEON and also a lighting technician to the mentioned bands who passed away due to leukemia.
All the proceeds of the evening are going to Sylva Ry, an organization of parents whose children have leukemia.

MetalUnderground.com recently posted the brand new music video for the single ‘God Loves Violence’. Head to this link to view the new video. An original music video depicting scenes of violence and war was posted on YouTube several months ago, but after receiving over 100,000 views in under two weeks, the video was banned. This new video was filmed by New York City based filmmaker Justin Johnson. Justin is known for his popular short political satire, Hillary in Bosnia, which has over 2.4 million views, and was featured on Fox News and other TV outlets.
In a recent interview with Metal Sanaz, guitarist Erik Barath mentions more upcoming plans for the band. “We will shoot another video in April and planning to tour the UK in the summer and hopefully other parts of Europe as well. We want to play the US end of summer, start of fall but things change all the time and we may tour sooner.”
Through humble beginnings in Connecticut, INDESTRUCTIBLE NOISE COMMAND exceeded their own expectations and the expectations of others with two successful full-length Giant Records releases, Razorback (1987)and The Visitor (1988). Giant Records signed I.N.C. after witnessing the band’s crushing live performances with the likes of Exodus, Megadeth and King Diamond; all of which taking place only six months after they had graduated high school. In 1988 with The Visitor, the band hit #1 on the CMJ Metal charts and stole the U.K. #2 Import slot out from underneath Aerosmith. Now based in New York City, the band is back with their Bleed the Line EP and Heaven Sent, Hellbound. I.N.C. is an original pioneer of the thrash metal scene, resurrected in order to take back a genre recently flooded with neo-thrash carbon copies. Revived and back with a vengeance, I.N.C. is ready to prove ownership of the scene in 2011.
INDESTRUCTIBLE NOISE COMMAND is:
Erik Barath – Guitar
Tony Fabrizi – Guitar
Dennis Gergely – Vocals
Dennis Leeflang – Drums
Samuel J. Roon – Bass

With the weather freezing in London and doors not opening until 7.30pm; although it stated 7pm on the tickets, I wasn’t surprised to see a large group of cold moaning metallers, eagerly waiting to come inside when I arrived.
But with the clubs cosy atmosphere and great lighting, and a visit to the bar I was happy patiently waiting for the bands to come on.
Vocalist Joacim Cans and guitarist Oscar Dronjak of the Swedish heavy metal band HAMMERFALL will be available for a live, in-studio chat with their fans on Saturday, January 22nd, 2011 beginning at 9 a.m. PACIFIC / 12 noon EASTERN / 6 p.m. CET. The online event will take place at the Nuclear Blast Streaming Room at this location: www.nuclearblast.de/streamingroom
Having teamed up with producer James Michael (Mötley Crüe, Scorpions, SIXX:AM, Meat Loaf), HAMMERFALL members are now in Nashville, Tennessee recording the follow-up album to 2009’s No Sacrifice, No Victory, which debuted at #38 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. The as-yet-untitled new release will be available in Europe on May 20th. A summer release date in North America is expected.

No Sacrifice, No Victory achieved gold status in Sweden for sales in excess of 20,000 copies. The album registered the following first-week chart positions in Europe: #2 in Sweden, #7 in Germany, #20 in Switzerland, #21 in the U.K. (Indie Albums chart), #25 in Austria, #46 in Norway, and #95 in France.
Fallen, the eighth album from BURZUM, will be released in North America on April 5. The album is the second to be released via Varg Vikernes’ imprint Byelobog Productions (via Candlelight for the territory). Fallen features seven new compositions by the controversial Norwegian musician, each adding another storied journey to the celebrated BURZUM legacy.
Vikernes says of the new album, “Musically, Fallen is a cross between Belus and something new, inspired more by the debut album and Det Som Engang Var than by Hvis Lyset Tar Oss or Filosofem. The sound is more dynamic. We mastered the album as if it was classical music and I was more experimental than I was on Belus in all respects. Lyrically it is similar to the debut album, in the way that it is more personal and focuses on existential issues. But the mythological undertone known from Belus is still there. I have also included some ambient tracks, a short introduction and a longer conclusion.”
Fallen features artwork from renowned French painter William Adolphe Bouguereau. It is a striking contrast to art Vikernes has used for his albums in the past. He comments, “the cover is part of a painting called Elegy. I used it in this context because the album deals with the concept of falling, not least in a metaphysical sense. By definition, ‘elegy’ means a mournful, melancholy, or plaintive poem. It is a funeral song or a lament for the dead. It is a poem written in elegiac meter or a sad or mournful musical composition.”
Many credit BURZUM with influencing much of modern-day black metal. While his music has traveled roads often far removed from what many consider black metal to be (with parts ambient, electronic, and more), his compositions have immediately been taken to heart by countless legions of fans the world over. It is a “no fear” mentality that has made Varg Vikernes both an idol and a bastard.
Said Metal Army of 2010’s Belus, “Whatever you might think of Varg Vikernes, it’s impossible to deny the depressive brilliance of Belus, which recalls his classic albums Filosofem and Hvis Lyset Tar Oss yet shows a marked increase of maturity.” Fallen is the second album from the controversial recording artist since his release from the chains that bound him for nearly two decades. It is the first album from the musician to benefit from a proper North American release.
BURZUM was founded in 1991 by Vikernes. Under the pen name Count Grishnackh, the youthful musician quickly recorded four albums. During his lengthy incarceration, Vikernes recorded two additional albums, thus completing his initial series of compositions. Released from captivity in 2009, Vikernes immediately set out on a new path of creativity and quickly recorded/released Belus on his own label imprint, Byelobog Productions. Both CD and vinyl pressings of Belus quickly sold out with repressings of the album not coming quick enough to keep up with demand. Decibel Magazine featured a candid cover story with the musician while Guitar World and other key stateside magazines lined up for interview opportunities. He graced the cover of England’s Terrorizer and several other key international magazines.
Fallen Track Listing: 1. Fra Verdenstreet
2. Jeg Faller
5. Enhver til Sitt
7. Til Hel Og Tilbake Igjen
Danish progressive metallers Infinity Overture return with their second album “The Infinite Overture pt.1”. Led by the superb guitar and compositional skills of Neils Vejlyt, the band have taken a step away from the symphonic metal slant of their debut to mark the start of altogether darker and more distinctive journey with enhanced progressive elements blended with gothic textures.
After 2008’s self explanatory “Let The Metal Do The Talking”, Swedish traditional metal exponents OVERDRIVE deliver the most pulsating album of their career with the pedal to the metal bombast of “Angelmaker”. This new album sees Overdrive pummel the listener with their heaviest release yet. Home to 12 tracks all of which will make any self respecting metal fan throw the “horns” in appreciation.
