FIREWIND Unveil Days of Defiance Album Cover Art and Track Listing; Announce iTunes Exclusive Track

September 3rd, 2010
by EvilG
FIREWIND - Days of Defiance

FIREWIND - Days of Defiance

The Greek melodic metal phenomenon FIREWIND, led by the young guitar sensation Gus G. has returned with the scathing new studio album effort Days of Defiance, which is easily their defining musical moment. The much anticipated disc is set for an October 25th release in Europe, as well as an October 26th release in North America. Days of Defiance is a truly ambitious and dynamic opus featuring some of the most brilliant guitar playing the genre has seen in many years.

The striking cover artwork was designed by the band’s longtime partner in all design matters, Gustavo Sazes / www.abstrata.net and can now be viewed at www.myspace.com/firewind.

A special iTunes edition for Days of Defiance will feature the exclusive new track, “Riding On The Wind.”

FIREWIND’s guitarist and songwriter Gus G., currently on tour with Ozzy Osbourne in Europe, checks in with the following comment about the album and its artwork: “I’m very excited and cannot wait for our fans to listen to our new album! We feel we’ve captured great performances and took our songwriting to the next level on this one. There’s tons of cool guitar on there and I believe Bob has finally managed to reach warp-speed with his keyboard solos! Even more seriously, I highly recommend that you listen to this album at a very loud volume.

“As for the artwork, it was once again done by our visual wizard and webmaster extraordinaire, Gustavo Sazes. This time we asked Gustavo to come up with a great landscape scenery, with a more traditional approach and even get the “pencil” style of artwork on there, but also combine it with more modern stuff. So, he gave us that…with a slight futuristic, sci-fi element and I think the end result is stunning!”

EVILE WORKING ON NEW STUDIO ALBUM

September 3rd, 2010
by EvilG
Evile 2010

Evile 2010

British thrashers EVILE have revealed that they are currently hard at work writing for a brand new studio album.

EVILE, who recently won a coveted Metal Hammer Golden Gods award, are writing the follow-up to their critically acclaimed 2009 album, INFECTED NATIONS.  The band announce that they will once again be working with producer RUSS RUSSELL.

EVILE lead guitarist OL DRAKE comments:

“We’re well on our way into writing the material for Evile’s third album now.  We’ve been playing around with the odd part and riffs since ‘Infected Nations’ came out in 2009.  I have about ten song ideas which are being built on daily, but not going to stop there.  We’re not going to limit ourselves this time to a certain number of songs.  We’re just going to write until it’s time to give up and go into pre-production.  We’ve been sending tracks/recordings/ideas back and forth between ourselves, Russ Russell and our management (Wiseblood) and there’s an excellent vibe going.

“I don’t want this to be a typical ‘new album’ update using the same descriptions and words most bands use to big up an album, so I’ll just say the new stuff is really getting my blood boiling and my heart racing.  We’ve been through a lot over the past year, and it’s being naturally reflected in the music which is coming out.  I’ve never been as passionate as I am now about writing the best material we can.  With Joel in the mix, and him being a die-hard thrash fan since the ’80s, I’m looking forward to see how this will turn out.  Keep an eye on our website for more details, and come catch us on one of the 77 shows in September-December in North America!  (If you don’t see me I’ll be busy riffing for the benefit of your ears.)”

Hollow – Two progressive power metal classics to be re-released

September 3rd, 2010
by EvilG

Hollow is easily one of the most underrated bands in the history of progressive power metal. Their two stunning albums – “Modern Cathedral” and “Architect of the Mind” – never received the attention they deserved, despite stellar reviews in the music press. Metal Mind Productions presents the exclusive double reissue which brings back true classics from the past, filled with music that brings “power” back to “power metal”…

The history of the band began in the early 1990’s in the university town of Umeå, Sweden. There guitarist/vocalist Andreas Stoltz teamed up with Marcus Bigren (guitar), Thomas Nilsson (bass) and Urban Vikstrom (drums) to form a unique power metal group, which they called Vaalkyrian. The name was eventually changed to Hollow and in 1995 the band released a demo called ‘Speak To Me”, which contained six tracks. This was followed in 1997 by a self-titled EP with 4 tracks, which caught the attention of MM Records – a small, independent label. This way, by the end of the year Hollow managed to release their debut LP – “Modern Cathedral”. In 1998 the album got re-issued with a new cover by Nuclear Blast.

“Modern Cathedral” was an amazing collection of progressive power metal tracks strongly influenced by such acts as Queensryche, Crimson Glory or Elegy. With their debut release Hollow have proven that the genre holds no secrets for them. Crafty compositions (like the doom-infected “In Your Arms” or the brilliant power ballad “Lies”), phenomenal guitarwork and Andreas Stoltz’s impressive vocals all made up for a truly extraordinary LP. Hollow returned in 1999 with their sophomore offering – “Architect of the Mind”. This time the music was even heavier and more powerful than on “Modern Cathedral”. With such brilliant tracks as “Rain”, “Father” or the ultra-fast “Shadow God” the group once again showcased their incredible skills. Even Stoltz’s singing got better – his vocals in mid and high register were equally mind-blowing. The album received a very warm reception in the music press and Hollow were considered a breath of fresh air on the power metal scene. Unfortunately, due to several circumstances the band ceased to exist not long after the release of “Architect of the Mind”… As of 1999, Hollow remains a solo project governed solely by Andreas Stoltz. He occasionally posts new tracks on his MySpace page, the latest being called “Descending” – a song written in memory of Crimson Glory’s late vocalist Midnight who departed in July, 2009.

This exclusive double re-release of “Modern Cathedral” and “Architect of the Mind” holds two extraordinary musical gems that after all these years shine with the same overwhelming intensity. Both albums are absolutely essential for fans of progressive power metal, delivering all the best this genre has to offer. The new digipak edition is limited to 2000 copies. Remastered using tube technology, digitally edited on a golden disc. Metal Mind Productions set the release date for 11th October in Europe and 7th December in USA (via MVD).

New singer Apollo Papathanasio states: “I was completely inspired by doing the recordings for the new SPIRITUAL BEGGARS album. Working with Richard Bengtsson (co-producer/mixer) and Michael Amott while recording was fun and super creative! We were all on the same page and we had a good flow in the studio and I’m more than pleased with the end result! There were no arguments, we worked effectively – and we laughed a lot.  Michael and I share the same kind of humor and that was awesome. I always liked SPIRITUAL BEGGARS, but as I’m listening to the catalogue more carefully, I understand more what fantastic songs and arrangements they have on their past albums. I’m proud to be a part of this band and the new album. The biggest difference between SPIRITUAL BEGGARS and other bands that I’ve played with is that this band gives me the opportunity to use a more bluesy vocal approach. ‘Return To Zero’ has that instant feeling of the 70’s that I love, lots of groove and the cool improvised stuff that we did in the studio. To me, it’s perfect. Looking forward to come out and play live with the guys!”

Spiritual Beggars is Michael Amott (Guitars | ARCH ENEMY, CARCASS, Ludwig Witt (Drums | FIREBIRD), Per Wiberg (Keys | OPETH), Sharlee D’Angelo (Bass | ARCH ENEMY, WITCHERY) and Apollo Papathanasio (Vocals | FIREWIND)

Anthriel – “The Pathway” Coming Sept 17th

September 3rd, 2010
by EvilG

Anthriel - The Pathway

Anthriel - The Pathway

With their spectacular debut “The Pathway”, Finnish progressive metal outfit ANTHRIEL have produced an album which has all the potential to be hailed a classic and is guaranteed to fascinate metal fans worldwide.

Formed in 2004 by guitarist Timo Niemistö, keyboardist Antti Hakulinen and drummer Jari Kuokkanen the band went through a couple of line up variations before finding bassist Klaus Wirzenius and ultimately released a 3 track e.p. “Visions of Inner Light and Deeper Thoughts” in 2007 which won considerable praise on the underground metal circuit. Yet it was until the band found powerhouse vocalist Simo Silvan in 2008 that the bands sound became fully realised.

Anthriel – the Archangel of balance and harmony is the perfect name for the bands music. With a sound driven by big guitar riffs, deft keyboard touches, a rock solid articulate rhythm section and a healthy dose of expressive vocals high in melody built into intricate yet digestible arrangements this is metal that is easily appreciated on first listen – yet where further plays reveal numerous hidden depths that will keep the listener coming back for more. The quality of material would not be best represented with anything less than a superb production and this is exactly what the “The Pathway” serves up being an impressive self production by Timo Niemistö and mix by Jussi Kulomaa at MSTR Studios.

On the bands sound Simo Silvan comments, “We don’t want to go extremity with any style of music. There is a time for a head banging and time for musical landscaping. We try to keep our music as versatile we can. “The Pathway” is a mixture of various different kind of music styles like heavy, pop, acoustic, orchestral and instrumental and symphonic metal. The music and lyrics were written hand in hand with the album theme”.

Thematically “The Pathway” is a concept based on a sequence of individual songs and themes with inspiration coming from R.A. Salvatore’s Forgotten Realms: “The Dark Elf Trilogy”.

On the basic premise of “The Pathway” Timo Niemistö comments, “The Pathway is the story of a man who finds himself grown against his former principles and philosophy of life. He decides to leave his past behind and begin a journey to find his own personal promised land and balance. As the path gets rough good and evil starts to battle in his mind where the reality and fantasy gets mixed. He puts the blame to the Gods for playing with his life and turns his adversities to the divine entertainment with consequences that ultimately lead to the discovery of perfect harmony from within his own soul”.

This compelling story is a captivating lyrical theme for the first class musicianship on offer all of which comes together to make “Anthriel – The Pathway” a serious contender for best newcomers in progressive metal in 2010. Read the rest of this entry »

Mindsplit – Charmed Human Art Of Significance

September 3rd, 2010
by EvilG

Mindsplit - “Charmed Human Art Of Significance”

Mindsplit - “Charmed Human Art Of Significance”

MindSplit are a new band yet one with years of experience behind its individual members. With a style planted somewhere between straight metal, progressive metal and classic rock the band deliver a truly epic tale with their debut album “Charmed Human Art Of Significance” which is set for release on September 17th 2010 on Lion Music.

Featuring veterans of the Scandinavian metal scene in guitarist Matthias Holm and vocalist H.B. Anderson, the pair began writing and recording together again in their spare time c.2003 once again after the duo had worked together in the late 80’s with “The ‘n’ Sin”. When the music was taking shape bassist Conny Payne (Madison) joined along with highly respect sessions musicians – drummer Jon Skäre and keyboardist Jonas Lidström. This new collaboration turned into a whole different ballgame though when H.B. found his great old, old grandfather Xerxes Anderson’s Artificial Universe (a.k.a. Prof. Xandau 1807 ~ 1851) notes from his therapy sessions.

Prof. Xandau was a much respected therapist during the first half of 19th century and had his sessions all over the world based in both Europe and the U.S. These notes are the solid ground to this project and are used to tell a true story about psychological thoughts and human behaviours. H.B. Anderson comments, “The memory notes declare what’s going on in the human mind in different situations making for compelling listening, although as there are no names involved so it’s totally anonymous. Its fantastic literature and breathtaking reading, the human brain is very complex and odd. You can say it sure lives its own life”

This inspired lyrical setting led to the music of what would become “C.H.A.O.S” taking on its own personality. This story line is set to a musically accomplished and captivating release which will draw the listener in from the first listen. Musically the album is big, powerful, dark yet with subtle light and a very impressive aura with a powerful production to suit the mood. This has been further extended by the promotional video for the song “NME – Myself and I” which has received positive reactions from YouTube viewers worldwide.
