Nightwish's Anette Olzon

Nightwish's Anette Olzon

NIGHTWISH mainman Tuomas Holopainen has issued the following studio update:

“Time to add the final touches for Imaginarium while waiting for Anette to get well. This means the celtic magic of Mr. Troy Donockley with his pipes and bodhran, the smoking fingers of Mr. Pekka Kuusisto with his violin and some additional percussion & tribal drums.

I picked up Troy at the airport on Saturday night while Jukka and Kai (Hahto) were generating some new percussive ideas and boozing at Petrax. When we returned they had already nailed all tambourines, shaman drums etc. Satisfied with the day`s work we celebrated the Cumbrian – Carelian Dead Poets` reunion by entering the realm of the ultimate alchemic magic potion called Salmari. Jari (Sinkkonen of Kotiteollisuus) also joined us during the night to do a new tattoo for Jukka.

It took one and a half days for Troy to record his pipes and bodhran. He even ended up doing some singing in one of the songs, which was a killer of a last-minute-idea. This particular tune has grown up to be one of the highlights of the whole album. Saturday evening was filled with the much anticipated Troy`s magic show, sauna and a Youtube medley consisting some of our all-time faves like the ultimate tenor fail, cat vs. printer with translation, Sony releasing a stupid piece of shit that doesn`t f…ing work, etc.

Pekka`s violin virtuosity stunned us once again when he joined us on Monday night to play a couple of leads. His hand-written notes make medical doctors` prescriptions look like Rembrandt`s art. A true genius of a musician with a big heart.

A huge thanks and eternal gratitude to all of you fellow imagineers contributing to this album! A special appreciation goes to Tiina and Petri, our studio hosts, caretakers and dear friends at Petrax.

At the moment we are recording Anette`s vocals, seven songs done so far. She hasn`t quite cured from her broken ribs yet but fortunately it doesn`t affect her singing at all. She`s never sounded better. Time to enter the lair of Mr. Karmila now and start devouring song number eight.”

Holed up in Finland’s Petrax Studios for the better part of this spring, Nightwish’s’ new album, Imaginarium, is scheduled to be released early in 2012, followed by the movie after an indefinite time. The first single off the album as well as the trailer for the movie should appear well before the end of the 2011.

Nightwish - Imaginarium

Nightwish - Imaginarium

A recent Imaginarium movie update from Nightwish reads: “If you were to witness an unprecedented magic trick that could not be explained rationally, would you want to know how it is done?

A child experiences something new and unique each day. Something that is often impossible for the child to put into words without the guidance or explanation of an adult. Often the explanation has disappointed us. Sometimes it’s better not to know the truth.

If you had the chance to return to your childhood – just for a split second – when witnessing a magic trick, would you forfeit that chance and seek for a rational explanation?

Imaginarium is all about such questions. They have been answered by many people who have worked with the album and the movie already in the planning stages. As the final storyboard is being created, the producers, the director, the band, the production designer, the concept artists, and the casting director all work together to perfect their various arts for the movie. Contradictorily, they often have to ask the question: “How can we weave that kind of magic?”

The script has seen many improvements, more than ever before. The truth about movie production is that the script is often polished right until the first day of shooting, sometimes even during the shooting. At the moment, a lot of loose ends are being tied together, and a lot of characters are changed substantively to act as either a negative or a positive force in the story.

The SFX and prop design is underway, as well as the casting for the main roles. Storyboard drawing is interrupted momentarily, as concept art is needed to outline the characters and the environments.

We’ve experimented with arranging the background score with the actual songs off the album, and the best indicator of success is the amount of goose bumps the combination has raised.

?These are exciting times, because the decisions being made now largely shape the finished movie. We can only say that we’re already immensely proud of it.

We’ve travelled a long road, but not until the next crossroads can we distinguish a sign “Imaginarium, X miles”.”

Nightwish recently announced that the very first show for the Imaginarium World Tour will take place at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, CA, on Saturday, January 21st, 2012.

This will be the biggest Nightwish show production ever on North American soil and strictly a one-off – there will be no US tour until later in 2012. Ticket sales will begin soon.

Beautiful Beast “Adult Oriented Candy” – OUT NOW

April 9th, 2011
by EvilG

It’s 1989 again – at least for 46 minutes and 34 seconds. With his new band Beautiful Beast, German singer and guitarist Julian Angel has recorded a late-eighties styled album that features melodic hard rock, hair metal, aor, glam and sleaze with a common denominator. “It’s a party rock album with style” says Angel who made sure the music always meets 80s quality requirements such as catchy hooklines, big choirs, virtuoso guitar solos and thundering drums.

After a few delays caused by illness and mixing engineer Rolf Munkes’ (Empire, Tony Martin Band) full schedule Beautiful Beast’s “Adult Oriented Candy” has finally been officially released on April 8, 2011 following an exciting release countdown on several social networks.

While the band has recruited a few select music outlets by fans’ demand for an exclusive pre-sale, the album is now available through well-known style-related online stores and download services.

BOOK OF BLACK EARTH Announce Release Date For New Album

April 8th, 2011
by EvilG

“The Cold Testament” To Hit the Streets on May 24th, Pre-order Now Available

Seattle’s blackened death metallers, BOOK OF BLACK EARTH, will release their new album, “The Cold Testament,” on May 24th, 2011. It is the follow up to 2008’s critically acclaimed concept album, “Horoskopus.” The album was tracked with Chris Common (Pelican, The Sword) at the Red Room Studio in Seattle and mixed and mastered by Dan Swano (Bloodbath, Nasum, Opeth) at Unisound in Sweden. “The Cold Testament” pre-order is now available, exclusively, through Prosthetic Records’ webstore; The CD can be ordered on its own, or in a bundle with an exclusive T-shirt design. Get your copy, now! http://store.prostheticrecords.com/index.php/sales-preorders/preorders

Vocalist/guitarist TJ Cowgill commented on the new album: “Thematically, ‘The Cold Testament’ will be a little looser than ‘Horoskopus,’ but there is still an underlying current to both the sound of the album and lyrically. This will in my opinion be our strongest, most haunting offering, closing another chapter in the Book of Black Earth.”

Look for the band, who have previously appeared with the likes of Watain, Cattle Decapitation, The Black Dahlia Murder, Amebix, and many more, to hit the road later this year in support of “The Cold Testament.”

THE SOULLESS INTRODUCES NEW GUITARIST AND DRUMMER

April 8th, 2011
by EvilG

British melodic death metallers THE SOULLESS, who are due to release their new album, ISOLATED, on May 16th, have added two new members to the group’s line-up.

Formerly known as IGNOMINIOUS INCARCERATION, vocalist ANDY WARDLE, guitarist STEVE BROWN and bassist CHRIS BALL have added KRISTEN DAWSON as the group’s second guitarist and DAN WILDING (ABORTED, TRIGGER THE BLOODSHED) as the band’s new drummer.

THE SOULLESS comment on new guitarist KRISTEN DAWSON:

“We auditioned guitarists for months, with not much luck for the perfect shredder.  The band While She Sleeps are great friends of ours and recommended a guy from their area.  They said he was perfect for the band and we trust their opinion so we gave him a shot.

“He sent us an audition video for the song ‘Earthbound’.  His was by far the best audition video so we invited him down to the studio while we were recording ‘Isolated’, the debut Soulless album.  We wanted Kristen to hear the album to ensure it was the music he was interested in.  He loved what we were doing and really wanted to be involved.  He stayed with us over the duration of the studio time.  This allowed us to test him out as we could get him to play along to the studio tracks as if recording, so we could hear every mistake.  He nailed what we gave him, especially considering the short time he had to learn the songs.  We spent two weeks with him and got on well so the decision was easy.

On new drummer DAN WILDING:

“Sam Bailey, who played drums for II, helped us out by recording the drums for the album, but was leaving the band to pursue other projects.  So we needed a drummer.  We asked a few friends to see if they could fill in whilst we searched for a permanent member.  We knew Dan Wilding from friends Trigger The Bloodshed, and asked if he could fill in while not busy with other projects.  He came to check the album out during the mixing process and liked the material so much that he asked to be a permanent member.  The band was really happy with this as we knew Dan to be an amazing, really professional drummer who happened to be a super nice guy too.  So, of course we said yes and The Soulless line up was complete and ready to shred!”

Metalunderground.com Reveals Cover Artwork And Teaser Trailer For “All For None, None For All: A Tribute to Peter Steele”

April 8th, 2011
by EvilG
“All For None, None For All: A Tribute to Peter Steele"

“All For None, None For All: A Tribute to Peter Steele"

As was previously announced, Metalunderground.com will be releasing an exclusive tribute album to Peter Steele, who passed away last April. A dozen bands from across the world came together to contribute to the album and honor the icon of doom and gloom. The cover artwork for the tribute, which follows the iconic Type O Negative style and was created by Dan Mitchell of Beneath the Woods studio, has now been revealed and can be viewed at http://www.metalunderground.com/images/news_articles/All_For_None_None_For_All_-_A_Tribute_To_Peter_Steele_500.jpg

To whet the fan’s appetites and give a taste of what’s to come, a teaser trailer is also now available that showcases clips from two of the cover songs appearing on “All For None, None For All: A Tribute To Peter Steele.” Check out the video below  to hear segments from the gothic recreation of “Love You To Death” by Autumns Eyes and the power metal rendition of “I Don’t Wanna Be Me” by Auvernia.

Speaking on Peter’s influence in the musical world, Argentina based band Auvernia commented, “Type O Negative – and specially Peter Steele as their front man and composer – has been inspirational for us in terms of diversity in music. They were not afraid to experiment, to melt genres such as thrash and goth for the sake of the compositions, that way creating their own trademark. If we also add musicianship, personality and attitude, then you have an icon. That’s the legacy we take from Peter Steele and his band, for their heritage is there, within all their music.”

The track order has now been finalized for the tribute album, which features bands from such diverse locations as Finland, Taiwan, Norway, Denmark, Spain, and even the U.S.

1. Auvernia – “I Don’t Wanna Be Me”
2. Fairytale Abuse – “Black No. 1 (Little Miss Scare-All)”
3. Stabbingback – “Halloween in Heaven”
4. Emancer – “My Girlfriend’s Girlfriend”
5. Dead Shape Figure – “Dead Again”
6. Enthrope – “Wolf Moon (Including Zoanthropic Paranoia)”
7. Dark Hound – “Life is Killing Me”
8. A Band of Orcs – “Green Man”
9. In.Verno – “Everything Dies”
10. Blind Greed – “Christian Woman”
11. Revilement – “Sex and Violence”
12. Autumns Eyes – “Love You To Death”

“All For None, None For All: A Tribute To Peter Steele” will be available in digital format through Metalunderground.com for a small fee, required to cover the mechanical licensing fees and transaction costs. Any leftover profits will be donated to charity. Stay tuned for additional details on the release of this multinational tribute to one of metal’s fallen legends.

SCARRED BY BEAUTY to release their debut album ”Sutra”

April 8th, 2011
by EvilG

The acclaimed Danish five-piece SCARRED BY BEAUTY releases their debut album ”Sutra” in Germany/Benelux June 10th 2011 and in the rest of Europe June 13th 2011.

After the Danish release of the acclaimed debutalbum “Sutra”  the Copenhagen five-piece SCARRED BY BEAUTY has been touring as a co-headliner on the NEW ERA TOUR, which included 11 dates of the finest venues all over Denmark. Check out the tour diary pt. 1 here, pt. 2 here, pt. 3 here and pt. 4 here. The date is now set for the European takeover. “Sutra” will be released in Germany/Benelux June 10th 2011 and in the rest of Europe June 13th 2011.

SCARRED BY BEAUTY was formed in 2006 by the brothers Dennis and Daniel Leszkowicz and the childhood friend Jonathan Albrechtsen (former Hatesphere singer). SCARRED BY BEAUTY won at the Danish Metal Awards 2009 in the category “Talent of the Year”. The band’s debut album “Sutra” follows in the path of their previously released E.P “We Swim”, and clearly shows how SCARRED BY BEAUTY has grown and developed new sides to their music. On “Sutra”, the band combines a range of various styles, in a new and playful way. From pounding punk and hardcore passages, into vast and melodic landscapes the band mixes noise rock, metal and core genres with minimalistic lyrics, in a graceful, unique and refreshing way. “Sutra” stands as a solid and personal product from a young and ambitious band. In 2010 SCARRED BY BEAUTY played both a Danish and a European tour, and have supported Gojira in Copenhagen as well as Berlin.
In total SCARRED BY BEAUTY stands as a strong new name, ready to advance to the international level. The band’s passion is undeniable, and combined with their commitment to take SCARRED BY BEAUTY to a higher level it seems there is no stopping this Danish five-piece.

SLAYER – Dave Lombardo

SLAYER – Interview with Drummer Dave Lombardo

Interview by Arto Lehtinen and Marko Syrjala

Slayer-promo-photo.jpg

Slayer has been in the frontlines of thrash metal and extreme metal for nearly four decades. Several classic songs such as Hell Awaits, Raining Blood, South Of Heaven, Dead Skin Mask, Cult etc are immortal and present a well oiled metallic war machine pushing forward relentlessly and show the brutality of thrash metal. However, the thrash metal machine needs a powerful inexhaustible source of intense drumming to create the well-known Slayer tempo. Dave Lombardo is definitely at the core of the unique sounds of Slayer. Despise his absence from Slayer, his role in the world of Slayer has become, and still is, an important part of Slayer. Metal-Rules.com had the great pleasure to have a moment with Dave Lombardo.

Pathology: Slam Bloody Gore

Pathology

Pathology: Slam Bloody Gore

Interview by Shawn Jam Hill

In the metallic world, some of the most brutal heaviosity can also be the silliest. Nobody can deny the greatness of Cannibal Corpse, for example, but their bloody disgusting lyrics detailing zombies, necrobutchers, plagues and,um, being raped with a knife are slightly less genius than the heavy riffosity at hand.

When I first heard San Diego’s Pathology, the crushing death grunts of vokiller Matti Way were a) totally indecipherable and b) totally awesome. But I figured they were treading the same blood-soaked waters as their Corpse-Grinding peers. Turns out I was completely wrong. When delving into the lyrics printed in the liner notes of the band’s exceptional new album Legacy Of The Ancients (Victory), I found a trove of stories detailing conspiracy theory, giants called the Nephilim who will rise and conquer mankind, freemasons and the inevitable coming of a reptilian race all set to a blistering slam-metal soundtrack rife with sick riffs and Dave Astor’s (ex The Locust) dizzying percussive mastery.

This ain’t your average bunch of heshers.

I recently caught up with new vokillist Jon Huber, a 26 year old super-mellow dude from the Northwest who just happens to love crushing slam. Just like Mark Wahlberg in that classic movie Rock Star, which is loosely based on Tim “Ripper” Owens’ ascendancy to the top of the heap as Halford’s replacement in Judas Priest, Huber loved Pathology, tried out for the vokill vacancy and got the gig. Here’s my quick chat with a very astute and well spoken rocker who enlightened me on the perils of living in a van and the travails of a slamming death metal band on the road for perpetuity.

AMORPHIS – New single and major TV appearance

Amorphis - You I Need

Amorphis - You I Need

The digital single “You I Need” will be released in Finland on April 20 and in other countries on April 22. The song will be premiered on the Amorphis Facebook page and various radio stations on Monday, April 11.

On Easter Sunday, April 24, Amorphis will participate in the charity gala Idols tekee hyvää and perform the new song for a large TV audience (MTV3, 19:15). The proceeds of the event, which brings the popular American format Idol gives back to Finland for the first time, will be directed to education projects for children and teenagers in poverty-stricken countries such as Haiti and Cambodia.

Amorphis recently revealed the title and artwork for their upcoming album. The Beginning Of Times will be released at the end of May (27th, via Nuclear Blast).

The tracklist is as follows:

‘Battle For Light’

‘Mermaid’

‘My Enemy’

‘You I Need’

‘Song Of The Sage’

‘Three Words’

‘Reformation’

‘Soothsayer’

‘On A Stranded Shore’

‘Escape’

‘Crack In A Stone’

‘Beginning Of Time’

‘Heart’s Song’ (digipack bonus)

The new album is the most challenging Amorphis album so far in terms of both music and lyrics. Its central character is the iconic hero of Finnish mythology, Väinämöinen, whose tale has been masterfully retold by lyricist Pekka Kainulainen.

The Beginning Of Times was produced by the band; vocals were recorded under the guidance of Marco Hietala in his home studio in Kuopio. Like its predecessors, the album was mixed by Mikko Karmila. Its cover artwork shows Travis Smith’s magnificent interpretation of the mythological birth of the world from a goldeneye’s egg.

In June, Amorphis will embark on the extensive The Beginning Of Times tour, which is scheduled to continue through 2012.
