Warbringer – John Kevill

Interviewed by Alan Gilkeson

wb-walking.jpg

Warbringer’s second full length album, WAKING INTO NIGHTMARES, pounces you with ten slick, heavy hitting, super riffing rageful songs. A modern Thrash record that harkens back to the genre’s heyday, yet makes it sound brand new. In spite of Gary Holt’s emphasis on guitars, and they do crush, the real star of the record is vocalist John Kevill. He’s ferocious and agressive and hits all the pockets. Here’s my interview with him.

Stratovarius – Jens Johansson

Interviewed by EvilG, Transcription by Duke

Stratovarius-JJ-4.jpg

Keyboardist and (often) mouthpiece for Statrovarius, Jens Johansson, spoke to us about the triumphant return of Finland’s premier power metal band. As many a fan and even casual observers know, this band has been though a lot of inner turmoil over the few years. The band had been on ice, near death, or almost defunct for a while. Whether it was because of their former label going tits up or the mental stability of now former guitarist and band visionary, Timo Tolkki, the dust has finally settled and from it all the band (sans Tolkki) is back and have returned with their strongest album since INFINITE (2000). We spoke to Jens about the new album and how it was that the band which was teetering on the edge are now back to restore and hopefully take the band onwards to new horizons.

Richard Mentzer of Manimal

Interviewed by Alan Gilkeson

richardmentzer.jpg

Soaring vocals, flowing rhythms, tasty licks, Manimal walk the fine line between Progressive and Power Metal. Released independently, their new album THE DARKEST ROOM reached number 36 on the Swedish charts, forcing AFM to rise up and sign them. Now the stage is set for Manimal to surprise the Metal world when the album is officially released on June 19th, 2009.

From Hell’s Heart: June 2009

"My Unpopular Opinion"
From Hells Heart...

Each of us took the opportunity to break from the pack and voice our unpopular or out of step views on anything metal related, like “Judas Priest is totally overrated,” “FORBIDDEN is the best Sabbath album ever,” or “RELOAD is the bestest ‘tallica album and they need to wear more green eyeliner again! harhar!”  Here’s what the staff of metal rules had to say……

Pestilence – The Underworld, London

June 1st, 2009

Pestilence

with Vreid and The New Dominion

Live at The Underworld

12th April 2009

Live review and pics by HannTu

Atheist and Cynic in 2006. Pestilence in 2008. I can see a pattern starting to emerge…In all seriousness though, unless there’s cloning technology that will bring us back Chuck Schuldiner and resurrect Death, fans of old school progressive death metal have pretty much been in heaven over the last year or so. Cynic playing Wacken and releasing a new album, Pestilence releasing a new album and returning to the touring circuit, and a new Atheist album on the cards…incredible.

The resurrection of Pestilence probably raised the most eyebrows though, and frontman/guitarist Patrick Mameli moved quickly to quell any rumours that him and Martin van Drunen had made up and reunited under Pestilence’s banner. In fact, Tony Choy is the only person in the current line-up to have played in Pestilence before. But no matter, their recently released album RESURRECTION MACABRE promises much for the future of these Dutch guys.

Thanks to the dedication of Paul and Felicity at Arcane Promotions (the people who bring the excellent Deathfest annually to London), we had the chance to see Pestilence right here on our doorstep, instead of traipsing over half of Europe to catch them at festivals – although no doubt we’ll be doing that in the summer anyway!

Guitarist Jukka Kyrö

Interview by Niko Karppinen

NNS - pic2.JPG

National Napalm Syndicate is one of the oldest speed´n´thrash metal bands in Finland. Lots of water has flown under the bridges of Northern Finland since band was formed in 1986. I had an opportunity to talk with one of the original members of the band, Jukka Kyrö. N.N.S. just released their new album DEVOLUTION OF SPECIES so it was time to meet under the meat hook, speak the truth and of course shoot straight.

NOCTURNUS – Mike Browning

NOCTURNUS 2008 – Mike Browning

Interview by Luxi Lahtinen

Live pictures by Luxi Lahtinen

Thanks to Erich Heintzelman for the transcription

Nocturnus8 - (Mike).JPG

Mike Browning does not need any introduction. His merits in such legendary satanic death metal bands as Morbid Angel, Incubus Nocturnus, Acheron, etc., should speak volumes for who Mike Browning is. The man is a living legend so to speak.

His latest band, After Death, got into a touring mood last October, doing 12 dates across the Europe, but this time Mike and his other band fellows decided to do the tour under Nocturnus´ moniker. The band concentrated on playing Nocturnus songs only off from the highly successful THE KEY album, plus they also played a couple of After Death songs – as well as they did a couple of old Morbid Angel songs that either Mike wrote himself for Morbid Angel´s ABOMINATIONS OF DESOLATION album, or co-write them together with Trey Azathoth.

Mike tells in this interview why he decided to do this tour with the After Death line-up, and not the original Nocturnus line-up that recorded both THE KEY and THRESHOLDS albums. He also reveals the possibility to continue doing more Nocturnus shows during 2009 – as well as speaking straight from his heart on how he felt when he was fired from his own band by the other band members, that he formed back in 1987.

This is a really interesting and in-depth interview that Mike was kind enough to do for Metal-Rules.com, so be sure to read it in order to understand why certain things happened the way they happened in the first place regarding Nocturnus especially.

SAXON – Biff Byford

May 28th, 2009
by Robert Williams

Biff.jpg

Interview Conducted by Robert Williams

Videography Courtesy of Sandra Torres

The last time Saxon graced a stage in San Antonio, Texas was in 2002 when the long standing British Metal institution recorded several live tracks for the "Heavy Metal Thunder" release. It would be seven years and what would seem like forever before Saxon would return to the US. At last the band of Brits had returned to play three US concerts; kicking things off at the BB Kings venue in New York before passing through San Antonio to headline an outdoor festival at the Sunken Gardens Ampitheatre before  wrapping things up the next night at the Meridian Theater in Houston, Texas.

By the time you read this the band will be back in Europe headlining outdoor Heavy Metal festivals such as the upcoming Wacken Open Air in early August. Plans are tentatively underway to return to the States possibly on a package tour sometime later in the summer.

Legendary vocalist and Saxon co-founder Biff Byford sat down with me to discuss the bands current activities; including the newly released "Into The Labrinyth" album, an upcoming unplugged live release where the band will collaborate with a full symphony orchestra, the band’s unique Riff King YouTube contest, the early days of the NWOBHM scene and more…

Enjoy, and fill your heads with Heavy Metal Thunder!

Roadburn Festival – Tilburg Holland

May 27th, 2009
by Arto Lehtinen

Roadburn2009-poster.jpg

Roadburn Festival

23 – 26 April 2009

013 Tilburg Holland

Roadburn has reached the status of an underground cult event amongst metal fans, arranged in a small idyllic town, Tilburg in Holland every year. This year’s Roadburn was nothing but an utter success as all the tickets were sold out within 45 minutes. Selling the tickets in such a short time was definitely a record. All in all 2500 people, when all bands and crews are added up, conquered the whole small town and its small bars and restaurants. The Roadburn festival offered a great deal of different kind of underground stuff covering from hard rock, space rock, stoner rock to industrial. All the mainstream metal styles don’t fit too well with the concept of Roadburn. However Metal-Rules made its debut visit to Roadburn to feel the atmosphere of obscure stoner spacy rock and sniff the smell of the weed.

Hour Of Penance – Giulio Moschini

Italian death metal squad Hour Of Penance’s latest album, THE VILE CONCEPTION, is a piece of utter death metal from beginning to end. The four-piece has already started working on the follow-up. The band’s leader Guilio Moschini goes back in time recalling how Hour Of Penance started out, why the band had to go through some line-up changes and finally sheds some light on working on the fourth album. THE VILE CONCEPTION is definitely a must-have for every die-hard death metal freak.
