SoundCheck Hollywood Announces It’s Grand Opening On Sunset Blvd. On March 23

SoundCheck Hollywood Announces It’s Grand Opening On Sunset Blvd. On March 23rd; Featuring Signings With Asking Alexandria, Emmure and Many Other High Profile Artists

In an age where music retailers are closing at a rapid rate and record labels are going bankrupt due to online piracy and declining sales, Sumerian Records creator Ash Avildsen has taken a stand to prove that there is still an undeniable excitement to buying physical product. You have to admit no digital download can compare to having artwork and lyrics in hand when cranking that new album you just picked up at your local record store.

Avildsen has now boldly put his money where his mouth is, upon announcing the launch of SoundCheck Hollywood (located across from the infamous Whisky A Go-Go on the Sunset Strip and a couple doors down from The Viper Room), which is a store that harkens back to the days when Tower Records ruled the strip and also served as a place for musicians and music fans to unite. For additional information check out: www.soundcheckhollywood.com

The official SoundCheck Hollywood grand opening party will take place on Wednesday, 3/23 and will feature signings from Asking Alexandria, Emmure, Animals As Leaders, The Faceless, Suicide Silence, Winds of Plague and many others.

SoundCheck Hollywood is essentially a lifestyle music store that will feature CDs, Vinyl and DVDs from all artists spanning the spectrum of the metal/underground rock genres, but will separate itself from any other store with the special emphasis of limited edition merchandise that will cover the walls. The ONLY place you will be able to find the exclusive designs of shirts and other merch items carried at SoundCheck will be right there at 8872 Sunset Blvd.

However, the specialness does not stop there. SoundCheck will offer fans a unique meet and greet opportunity with bands that takes place in the “backstage” of the store which will differ greatly from your normal autograph signings. “We want to create an intimate environment that no other store has ever offered fans when they go to meet their favorite artists at a signing. SoundCheck’s backstage will be far different from your typical “move-it-along” setting, i.e. having a line of people looking over your shoulder while you are sharing your coveted moment with the band you came to meet” Avildsen added.

All new releases the store carries will be made available at 9:00PM that Monday (rather than the morning of the standard release schedule on Tuesday) “If a kid can buy it on iTunes on the east coast at that moment, then people in California should be able to buy the physical version in person too.” To top it off, whether you are just browsing the store or waiting in line to get backstage at SoundCheck Hollywood, fans can enjoy the two fully restored, timeless arcade pinball machines found inside: GUNS N ROSES and WWF ROYAL RUMBLE, which are free to customers.

WHOLE LOTTA LOVE: An All-Star Salute To Fat Chicks is released!

March 11th, 2011
by Celtic Bob

SplitScreen Entertainment announces the release of its uniquely themed tribute album, “WHOLE LOTTA LOVE: An All-Star Salute To Fat Chicks.” A musical homage to the big, beautiful women who make the rockin’ world go ’round, “WHOLE LOTTA LOVE” features all-new recordings of popular songs praising the fuller female figure, originally made famous by some of the biggest names in rock and pop music. These anthems to abundance are performed by renowned rock & rollers from yesterday and today, along with a select few rising stars. In direct opposition to the “no fat chicks” mantra espoused by some, “WHOLE LOTTA LOVE” is a star-studded celebration of large and lovely ladies.

Starting off the salute with a regal flourish is Queen’s arena rock classic “Fat Bottomed Girls” by L.A. Guns singer Phil Lewis, with guitarist Paul LaPlaca and drummer John Macaluso. Next, the Poison chart-topper “Unskinny Bop” is ably recreated by party rock outfit Evick, featuring members of the Bret Michaels Band. This is followed by a high-octane version of the AC/DC concert staple “Whole Lotta Rosie” by Rufus Fontain, featuring Cinderella guitarist Jeff LaBar and original Jackyl vocalist Ronnie Honeycutt. Danger Danger frontman Ted Poley lends his trademark vocals to the Electric Boys hit “All Lips N’ Hips,” alongside his Poley/Rivera partner Vic Rivera. Then rock & roll comic C.C. Banana offers up a faithful rendition of the Kiss track “Spit” (a.k.a. “Split”), featuring bassist David Z of ZO2 and guitarist Angus Clark.

Plus-sized songstress Celisa Stratton brings all-new meaning to the title track “Whole Lotta Love” by Led Zeppelin, in conjunction with veteran Quiet Riot drummer Frankie Banali and guitarist Alex Grossi. And the Sir Mix-A-Lot hip-hop smash “Baby Got Back” is given a metal makeover by comedian Don Jamieson, co-host of “That Metal Show” on VH1 Classic. Next up is an offering from founding Twisted Sister guitarist Jay Jay French, Tuff vocalist Stevie Rachelle and longtime W.A.S.P. drummer Stet Howland, who collaborate on a cover of the Ted Nugent cult favorite “Thunder Thighs.” Plus “Big, Fat, Sexy Mama,” a song by New York City underground sensation The Compulsions, is expertly rendered by newcomers Triangle Exception. Also included is the original studio recording of “You Need A Great Big Woman” by Candye Kane, celebrated blues diva and full-figured femme fatale.

Entering the album’s home stretch, Trixter guitarist Steve Brown puts a rock spin on Mika’s international Top 40 single “Big Girl (You Are Beautiful).” And appearing for the first time anywhere is the brand new song “BMW” by the mysterious Dogwhistle, a funk/rock fusion combining two of man’s favorite things: girls and cars. Concluding the tribute on a comedic note, the bass-heavy Spinal Tap dirge “Big Bottom” is given a 6-string revamp by Twisted Sister guitarist Eddie Ojeda and his Band of Steel. The entire affair is topped with an inspired cover by pop artist Les Toil, known for his bold and beautiful “big girl” pin-up art.

From beginning to end, “WHOLE LOTTA LOVE” delivers a heavy dose of heavy hitters, singing the praises of heavy women. The complete track listing for “WHOLE LOTTA LOVE: An All-Star Salute To Fat Chicks” is as follows:

1.     Fat Bottomed Girls – Phil Lewis (with Paul LaPlaca and John Macaluso)
2.     Unskinny Bop – Evick
3.     Whole Lotta Rosie – Rufus Fontain (featuring Jeff LaBar and Ronnie Honeycutt)
4.     All Lips N’ Hips – Poley/Rivera (featuring Ted Poley and Vic Rivera)
5.     Split – C.C. Banana (with Banana 7, featuring David Z and Angus Clark)
6.     Whole Lotta Love – Celisa Stratton (with Alex Grossi and Frankie Banali)
7.     Baby Got Back – Don Jamieson
8.     Thunder Thighs – Stevie Rachelle, Jay Jay French, Stet Howland
9.     Big, Fat, Sexy Mama – Triangle Exception
10.     You Need A Great Big Woman – Candye Kane
11.     Big Girl (You Are Beautiful) – Steve Brown
12.     BMW – Dogwhistle
13.     Big Bottom – Eddie Ojeda’s Band of Steel

Stratovarius – Interview with vocalist Timo Kotipelto

Stratovarius – Vocalist Timo Kotipelto

Interviewed by EvilG

Stratovarius are one of those bands that I am obsessed with. Since the release of the phenomenal album ELYSIUM I’ve been playing the album almost every day and have been going back through their discography (yet again) to see how it stacks up. In this fan’s opinion, the band have now proven, beyond any doubt, that they are as relevant and and as amazing today as they’ve always been.

Given the opportunity for an interview with Timo Kotipelto was of course a treat. A time was hard to nail down as a result of his recent throat problems and touring but with some persistence and patience, we got ‘er done and here is the result. Enjoy!

MORS PRINCIPIUM EST Seeking New Guitarists – “If it does not work this time, or we don’t find the right person/persons, then it’s game over for MORS PRINCIPIUM EST”

March 10th, 2011
by EvilG

Guitarists Tomy Laisto and Kalle Aaltonen have left Finnish melodic death metallers MORS PRINCIPIUM EST.

Commented the band: “If we still want to continue with MORS PRINCIPIUM EST, we need new guitar players.

“This is our LAST try to make things happen.

“If it does not work this time, or we don’t find the right person/persons, then it’s game over for MORS PRINCIPIUM EST.

“So, if you are, or know somebody, who is at least 21 years old, willing and able to write and play death metal with melodies and also would like to be a part of the new MORS PRINCIPIUM EST, then send us an email.

“YOU CAN BE FROM ANYWHERE. As long as you are eager and get something done, then you may be the one we are looking for. AND we are looking for one or two players.

“Soo, if you have what it takes, send us an email and we will talk more.

“And just to make things 100% clear: You can live, for example, in USA, Germany, Sweden, Australia, Finland or wherever.”

MORS PRINCIPIUM EST’s third album, “Liberation = Termination”, was released in February 2007 via Listenable Records. The follow-up to “The Unborn” was recorded at Astia Studio in Finland and was mastered at Imperial Mastering in Concord, California.

NIGHTWISH: New Album Vocal Recordings Postponed Until Early April

Nightwish - Imaginarium

Nightwish - Imaginarium

The vocal recording sessions for the new NIGHTWISH album, “Imaginarium”, have been postponed until April 4 in order to allow the band’s singer, Anette Olzon, a longer recovery period after she suffered broken ribs in a recent fall. She writes on her blog, “me, [NIGHTWISH manager Ewo Pohjola of King Foo Entertainment Ltd.] and [NIGHTWISH mainman/keyboardist] Tuomas [Holopainen] decided that it’s better if I rest the whole month and get in shape so I can do the vocals super good and have booked my vocal recordings from April 4 instead in another studio in Finland. This is really good, ’cause no one will be happy if the album won’t sound perfect. And we don’t have any hurry since the album has plenty of time to get mastered and ready still.”

Holed up in the studio for the better part of this spring, NIGHTWISH is not only putting finishing touches to its new album, “Imaginarium”, but also planning a movie of the same name. If all goes well, the CD will be released in early 2012, to be followed by the movie at some point further down the line. The first single off the album as well as the trailer for the film should arrive well before the end of 2011.

For the movie, NIGHTWISH has teamed up with director Stober Harju’s production team and Solar Films.

Classic rockers GRAVEYARD from Gothenburg, Sweden has offered the following track-by-track commentary on the nine songs comprising their new studio album, Hisingen Blues.  This 100% analog recorded release will be out in Europe on March 25 and in North America on April 19th.  It was produced, recorded, and mixed by Don Alsterberg (JOSÉ GONZALES, JUNIP, SOUNDTRACK OF OUR LIVES, THE INTERNATIONAL NOISE CONSPIRACY) at Don Pierre Studios in Gothenburg, Sweden.

  • Ain’t Fit To Live Here
  • “Classic blues riffs, just harder and on speed, and filtered through 30-40 years of rock history.  Lyrics – frustration and the feeling that you hate everybody.”
  • No Good, Mr. Holden
  • “Introspective lyrics. A doomy and gentle song at the same time. The song melodies really stand out on this one.”
  • Hisingen Blues
  • “A fast hard song about living fast and hard. Not your general song structure. Influenced by many different types of music.”
  • Uncomfortably Numb
  • “Jokingly, we’ve called it the power ballad of the album. Lyrics speaks for themselves. A touch of southern rock. Suitable for making love to. Maybe.”
  • Buying Truth (Tack Och Förlåt)
  • “A bit more modern if you will, but hard and primitive. Get-drunk-and-fight-it-out vibe. Lyrics about nervous, fake, media/music industry people, and other asshole musicians that haven’t got anything to bring to the table.”
  • Longing
  • “Something we’d been jamming on for a long time before we went in to the studio. But it was also very much written in the studio. Don (producer) had a lot of ideas for this one and we had kind help from a couple of friends, also.  It’s a nice break with a very different instrumental on the album.”
  • Ungrateful Are The Dead
  • “Title explains most of it. It’s not easy being alive. Personal lyrics. A song that we recorded a couple of times but never really were satisfied with until we made this version. Heavy. Maybe the most metal song on the album.”
  • RSS
  • “Live fast die. A party song with troublesome lyrics. And unusual backing vocals.”
  • The Siren
  • “Slow swamp blues with classic rock outbreaks and a really intense outro. Lyrics deals with a nightmare about Roky Erickson.”

View a trailer of the video for “Hisingen Blues” here.  The video will debut online on Monday, March 14th.

A limited edition 7” picture disc of the title track “Hisingen Blues” backed with the exclusive vinyl track “Granny And Davis” and featuring different artwork is now available through Nuclear Blast Germany’s mail-order.  On March 15th, it will be available viaNuclear Blast USA’s webstore.  This release is limited to 500 copies worldwide and they’re destined to go fast!

BLACK ‘N BLUE – “Hell Yeah!” Scheduled for release on Frontiers

March 10th, 2011
by EvilG

It’s BLACK ‘N BLUE time ! « Hell Yeah ! » finally scheduled for release on Frontiers

Frontiers Records is excited to announce the release of the new album from Portland-based Rockers BLACK ‘N BLUE on May 13th in Europe and May 17th in North America.

“Hell Yeah!” is a proud comeback statement for a band that wrote the pages of hard rock history in the 80’s. Black ‘N Blue released four successful and critically-acclaimed albums through Geffen Records: their self-titled debut (1984), “Without Love” (1985), “Nasty Nasty” (1986), and “In Heat” (1987), with the latter two albums produced by the legendary Gene Simmons of KISS. Catalogue sales in the US were in excess of one million units and the band’s original guitar player Tommy Thayer went on to replace Ace Frehley in the current KISS lineup.

Black ‘N Blue reunited for the first time in 2003 under the initiative of singer Jaime St. James, when he began writing tracks for a new album along with original member, Jef “Woop” Warner. The process came to a halt when St. James joined Warrant as their new lead vocalist in February of 2004. In recent years, Jaime has been releasing records and touring the world with Warrant.

In late 2008, plans to get back into the studio and finish the “Hell Yeah!” album were underway, as well as festival appearances and other touring. “The band’s line-up is all original except Shawn Sonnenschein”, tells Jaime St. James “but he has been in the band now for about 8 years. Still the new guy… Jeez!”. Black ‘N Blue recently joined the ever-expanding roster of Frontiers Records.

“Hell Yeah!” goes back to the roots of the “classic” Black ‘N Blue sound, mixing tight and hard rocking songs with a sleazy attitude. “This new album is a real thrill for us and all of the BNB fans” says St. James. “Our last studio recording was in 1988 so it’s a big deal. This is a classic BNB-sounding CD and could be described as a cross between all our previous records. It is heavy for the most part, but I like to think it reminds me of our first album. That’s why we brought back the original logo. We just modernized it”.

Black ‘N Blue will make a special live appearance at the M3 Rock Festival at the Merryweather Post Pavilion in Columbus MD on May 14th. More shows and festivals to be announced.

The new album “Hell Yeah!” will include the following tracks: Monkey; Target; Hail Hail; Fool’s Bleed; C’mon; Jaime’s Got The Beer; Angry Drunk Son Of A Bitch; So Long; Trippin’; Falling Down; Candy; Hell Yeah!; World Goes Round.

BRAINSTORM in studio preparing new album “On The Spur Of The Moment”!

March 10th, 2011
by EvilG

Good news for all lovers of high class power metal: BRAINSTORM have entered the studio 22 in Ludwigsburg (Germany) to record their new album “On The Spur Of The Moment”.

Here´s a first video from the recordings:

Vocalist Andy B. Franck:

“Since February 25th we are back together in the studio to work on the new album. We decided to record it with Axel Heckert in the Studio 22 in Ludwigsburg. Axel is a huge fan of the band and he will help us to reach a whole new level. The song material we have is again more aggressive than the last songs we had written. For us “Memorial Roots” was a cool album, but “On The Spur Of The Moment” will be a BLAST! We are really happy and excited to start recording new material because we cannot hear the old songs anymore… time for something new!”

MORBID ANGEL - Trey AzagthothFrench label Season Of Mist will release the eighth studio album from Florida extreme metallers MORBID ANGEL, Illud Divinum Insanus, on June 6th internationally, June 7th in North America. The album will be released in Japan via JVC (date TBA).

Season Of Mist will release a single, ‘Nevermore’, on May 16th as 7” collectors edition vinyl and digital download.

As previously reported, Illud Divinum Insanus will include ten songs, at least three of which stretch the boundaries of what is conventional Morbid territory.

BraveWords.com was privy to a sneak peek of four tracks, including the more traditional ‘Nevermore’ and the bizarre guitar that sounds like a keyboards of ‘I Am Morbid’, which begins with live crowd chant.

Morbid Angel’s ninth album begins with the letter I, keeping with the band’s tradition of naming their albums in alphabetical order beginning with 1989’s Altars Of Madness through 2003’s Heretic. The album was tracked at Mana Recording Studios in St. Petersburg, Florida with engineer Erik Rutan (HATE ETERNAL; former Morbid Angel guitarist).

Metal Assault caught up drummer Tim Yeung at the Scion Rock Fest in Pomona, CA. It was Yeung’s first live performance with the Florida extreme metal legends and the first show in 20 years that original drummer Pete Sandoval was not on the drum stool (he’s currently recovering from back surgery).

About the new Morbid Angel album, Yeung says it’s finished and being mastered now. “It’s great, I’m really excited about it. I will be touring with them for the next year, this full album cycle. Pete’s a big inspiration to us all and he’s a very special player. I knew that the shows were big to fill, but I’m more than ready.”
