Guitarists Ivar Bjørnson and Ice Dale of the Norwegian progressive/psychedelic black metal band ENSLAVED are featured on Page 23 of the February 2011 issue of Guitar World, on newsstands now.
“With [Axioma Ethica Odini], we wanted to get as close to our live sound as possible: urgent, upbeat and in your face,” says ENSLAVED founding guitarist and main songwriter Ivar Bjørnson to journalist Henry Yuan. “This approach actually ended up leaving an open field for the more melodic and progressive parts, and, in a way, helped crystallize them.”
More information on the February 2011 issue of Guitar World is available here.
ENSLAVED latest release, Axioma Ethica Odini, won the Terrorizer Reader’s Poll for “Best Album of 2010,” ranked #5 in Decibel Magazine’s “Top 40 Extreme Albums of 2010” list, and appeared on over 65 “Best Albums of 2010” lists in North America, repeatedly ranking in the Top 10. It also debuted at #16 on the Billboard Heatseekers (New Artists) chart, #40 in the Current Hard Music Albums chart, and #72 on the Independent Current Albums chart the week following its release.

VOIVOD will take part in the 70000 Tons Of Metal cruise, which is set to sail from Miami, Florida to Cozumel, Mexico on January 24, 2011 and return four days later. A total of 40 acts will appear at the event.
VOIVOD‘s new DVD, “Tatsumaki: Voivod in Japan 2008”, was released on November 17, 2009 via MVD Entertainment Group. The disc contains professionally filmed footage (three-camera shoot) of VOIVOD‘s September 20, 2008 concert at Club Citta in Kawasaki, Japan. The band was in Japan taking part in the two-night Thrash Domination 2008 event alongside TESTAMENT and FORBIDDEN.
“Infini”, the latest album from VOIVOD, landed at position No. 67 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.

The CD, which was issued in Europe via Nuclear Blast, contains the last thirteen songs written by Piggy and again features bassist Jason “Jasonic” Newsted (ex-METALLICA). Jason played bass on all the songs and mixed the album, which was released as a deluxe, digipack CD and was also issued on vinyl as a double LP.
Steven Patrick of Uweekly.com recently conducted an interview with JUDAS PRIEST/HALFORD frontman Rob Halford. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.
Uweekly.com: Pat Lachman, he was one of your guitarists in HALFORD, who went on to front the band DAMAGEPLAN. This being a Columbus, Ohio, paper and the Dimebag tragedy still fresh in our memory, I’m sure metal fans in the area would like to know how he’s doing and what he’s up to. Do you stay in contact with him?
Halford: I’ll be seeing Pat soon. I think he’s living in Dallas now. I got an e-mail from him the other day and I hope to be seeing him in the next couple of weeks. I don’t really know what he’s doing musically, but when I see him I’ll be asking him obviously. He’s an incredibly talented guitar player, but a great voice as well. I certainly hope he’s still working. He’s got everything that he needs to be a great metal musician.
Uweekly.com: I wouldn’t be able to call myself a metal fan if I didn’t ask about the news that JUDAS PRIEST will be doing a farewell tour in 2011. What brought that on? Was it just time?
Halford: Yeah, I think it’s time, you know. We’re not the first band to say farewell, it’s just the way everyone comes to at some point and we’re gonna say a few more things early next year, so I think the main thing that we just want to ask everybody to consider is don’t be sad about this, start celebrating and rejoicing over all the great things we’ve done in JUDAS PRIEST.
Uweekly.com: Does this news mean that HALFORD will be getting more of your attention in the future?
Halford: Yeah, I’ve always said regardless of anything else that’s going on when time permits and when there’s no conflict with PRIEST, I love to do what I do with the HALFORD band, so that really hasn’t changed at all.

“Sarcofagus Live in Studio 1979” Brand New Black & Clear Vinyl LP Release
This is the first ever official vinyl release of this forgotten “Sarcofagus Live in Studio 1979” tape by the grandfathers of Finnish Heavy Metal. This tape was made in Pan Studio, Helsinki Finland, during a single recording session in May 1979 and buried in time soon after. Lately the tape was rediscovered and is now available on limited high quality vinyl, as it should be! The Vinyl is newly mastered respecting the original tape master.
These early tracks are a brilliant document of the birth of Sarcofagus – the music has its roots in blues and progressive rock, as the band was still searching for its distinctive heavy metal style. Finnish national radio played some of these songs, which then led to a record deal and the rest is heavy metal history.
The Black Limited Edition 180 gram version, only few copies available! 350 gram heavy rough gatefold covers plus a large 16 pp booklet with liner notes and unseen photographs.

Marks After the Rain 20th Anniversary with Critically Acclaimed Sequel Release
LOS ANGELES, CA (January 11, 2011) – Multi-platinum recording artists NELSON led by twin lead front men Matthew & Gunnar Nelson announced the U.S. release date of their new original album Lightning Strikes Twice, a seamless sequel to After the Rain their classic multi-platinum debut album as they celebrate the 20th Anniversary milestone of the phenomenal record and its #1 Billboard hit “(Can’t Live Without Your) Love and Affection”. EMI / Frontiers Records USA / Stone Canyon Recordswill release the new NELSON album sequel Lightning Strikes Twice in the U.S. on February 15, 2011.
To coincide with the new release and 20th Anniversary of After the Rain, EMI / Frontiers Records USA / Stone Canyon Records will also release twin (2) NELSON catalog albums: Before the Rain the demo collection of songs that secured their recording deal with Geffen Records in 1990 and Perfect Storm – After the Rain World Tour 1991 live concert album. The North American release of the twin rare NELSON albums on February 15, 2011, will be a complement to the release of NELSON’s brand new original album sequel Lightning Strikes Twice.
“LIGHTNING STRIKES TWICE is the creative masterpiece NELSON has waited over 20 years to unveil,” enthuses Gunnar Nelson. “It’s given us the opportunity to resolve some unfinished business musically and artistically. American fans have waited long enough. We’re thrilled the U.S. release is finally here.”
“The forecast for 2011 is incredible with releasing three NELSON albums,” adds Matthew Nelson. “We are thrilled to be releasing our new original NELSON album LIGHTNING STRIKES TWICE in the United States. Plus, NELSON fans should enjoy the journey through the time capsule provided by these rare collectible albums – BEFORE THE RAIN and PERFECT STORM.”
Lightning Strikes Twice was recently released in Europe and the U.K. to overwhelming critical praise. Frank Thiessies of Metal Hammer Germany writes, “The two blonds have done the almost impossible: a comeback sequel as strong as Meatloaf’s BAT OUT OF HELL II. This sequel alone has more hits than Bon Jovi’s made in 18 years over 6 discs.”
Britain’s well-known music critic Alison Joy, who originally dubbed NELSON “the Timotei Twins” in Kerrang! in the U.K. back in 1990, writes in CLASSIC ROCK / AOR Legends magazine that Lightning Strikes Twice is “absolutely and unexpectedly awesome!”
“NELSON’s return has been hailed by the Melodic Rock press as one of the highlights of the year,” affirms Serafino Perugino, President & C.E.O. of Frontiers Records. “These results, along with the intrinsic quality of the album, make Frontiers extremely proud of this artistic cooperation. We look forward to more albums together with NELSON”.
After the Rain was the debut multi-platinum album by NELSON in the early 1990s. They zoomed to number one with their hit song, “(Can’t Live Without Your) Love and Affection,” which made history landing America’s iconic Nelson family (bandleader Ozzie Nelson, rock legend Rick Nelson, and twins Matthew & Gunnar) into the Guinness Book of World Records as the ONLY family in Entertainment with three (3) successive generations of #1 hitmakers.
NELSON’s After the Rain record and tour became a phenomenon just prior to the rise of grunge. The last major success of the good time rock’n’roll era, NELSON has had (1) Number One, (4) Top Ten, and (5) Top 40 Billboard Hot 100 hit singles, plus (5) #1 MTV videos and has sold over 6.5 million albums worldwide!
Nelson has always been synonymous with entertainment in America. Matthew and Gunnar follow Ozzie Nelson’s vision of embracing connecting with people and audiences through all forms of media. They have been doing television-hosting work for VH1 and E!
Plus, Gunnar co-hosted LIFETIME Radio’s nationally syndicated morning show.
NELSON has been headlining at major rock festivals around the globe celebrating the 20th anniversary of After the Rain. Touring in China, the U.K. where NELSON headlined the Firefest Rock Festival in 2010, and of course the U.S. where they have also toured extensively with Peter Frampton and Styx. A NELSON world tour in 2011 will soon be announced.
Lightning Strikes Twice tracklisting includes:
Call Me; Day By Day; Ready, Willing and Able; How Can I Miss You?; You’re All I Need Tonight; To Get Back To You; When You’re Gone; Take Me There; Come; In It For The Money; Change a Thing; Kickin’ My Heart Around.
The first single from the album released “You’re All I Need Tonight” and “Call Me” are available to listen online exclusively with full in streaming on Frontiers Web radio. www.frontiers.it/webradio
The new NELSON CD album sequel Lightning Strikes Twice will be available for purchase in the U.S. on February 15, 2011 on iTunes, Amazon.com and through retail stores nationwide.
Twin catalog NELSON CD collectible albums Before the Rain and Perfect Storm will also be available for purchase in the U.S. on February 15, 2011 on iTunes, Amazon.com and through retail stores nationwide.

AGOURA HILLS, Calif. – January 10, 2011 – Recently Knoxville, TN’s WHITECHAPEL and drummer Kevin Lane mutually decided to go their own ways and the internet is already abuzz with rumors as to the reasons behind the split. Kevin offered the following statement to answer fans questions as to why the drummer and the band parted ways:
“Over the past years I’ve had the experience of a lifetime and gotten to travel the world with not only a great band of musicians but some of my best friends. Unfortunately that time has come to an end. My playing had a falling out over the past year, thus I’ve decided to come home for good and go back to school full time. The past few tours I had the privilege of my good friend Gavin Parsons to fill my shoes and now another phenomenal drummer who I believe will do leaps and bounds of improvement to the band as a whole, Ben Harclerode has moved into the position until the decision for a full time drummer has been made. Thank you to everyone for all of your support.”
Founding member and guitarist Alex Wade adds: “It’s sad to see Kevin go, he was not just a fellow band member, but like a brother to all of us. I think it is honorable of him to step down to better the band. He is still and always will be an amazing drummer and talented musician; I believe it is just time for a new chapter for Whitechapel. That being said we would like to welcome Ben Harclerode (formerly of Knights of the Abyss) to the band to fill the drumming position. In my opinion he is one of the most solid and talented drummers in modern metal and we couldn’t be more excited for him to be playing with us. Ben will be helping us out until we take further measures to decide on a permanent drummer, but that is just something that is not needed right now, nor are we taking submissions. Come welcome Ben on our upcoming headliner and watch him shred his kit!”
Catch Ben Harclerode and the rest of the WHITECHAPEL guys as they tour across the states as headliners on the Welcome to Hell Tour featuring The Acacia Strain, Veil of Maya, Chelsea Grin, and I declare war.

On their 2009 Candlelight debut, Burn, Denver-based HAVOK quickly proved to metallers of all walks that they were far more than your average fly-by-night thrash act. Even Fear Factory’s Gene Hoglan took note of the young band saying, “HAVOK lays it down old-school heavy like a sharp stick in the eye.” Time Is Up, the band’s follow-up to Burn, will be released via Candlelight Records on March 29, 2011. Featuring ten tracks mixed by the legendary James Murphy, the record immediately showcases the band’s collective penchant for writing mammoth thrash anthems and the flawless musicianship that’s come from the last year’s worth of tireless live performances including national tours with Primal Fear, Hatchet, Hammerfall and Wretched, as well as regional dates with Destruction, Cephalic Carnage, Exodus, Anthrax and others. Blistering guitar and drum work once again highlight the record, particularly on standout tunes like “Prepare for Attack,” “Fatal Intervention,” “Covering Fire,” and “Scumbag In Disguise.” Bringing it all together is striking cover art by illustrator Halsey Swain. Check it out HERE.
Time Is Up Track Listing: 1. “Prepare for Attack” 2. “Fatal Intervention” 3. “No Amnesty”
4. “D.O.A.” 5. “Covering Fire” 6. “Killing Tendencies” 7. “Scumbag in Disguise”
8. “The Cleric” 9. “Out of My Way” 10. “Time Is Up”
HAVOK formed in 2004. After two self-released albums, the band caught the attention of England’s Candlelight Records and by the Spring of 2009, the band unleashed Burn to the metal masses. The album peaked on CMJ’s Loud Rock chart at 15 and broke MediaGuide’s Top 10. Continued radio play came from KBPI/Denver, KUPD/Phoenix, WKLL/Waterville NY and WSOU/South Orange NJ. Music Choice and the syndicated metal program Full Metal Jackie also gave HAVOK repeated airtime. HAVOK will kick off their first tour in support of Time Is Up next month as support for Florida death metallers Malevolent Creation. Stay tuned for tour dates and further info. http://www.myspace.com/havok

Finnish death metal outfit CORPSESSED has signed with Dark Descent Records for the CD release of their self-titled debut EP. Scheduled for an early 2011 release, the EP features six tracks of bludgeoning old-school death in the vein of Entombed, Incantation, Deicide, Immolation and Grave. Select tracks from the EP have been posted on the band’s official Myspace site, while more information on CORPSESSED can be found on their Facebook page. A video for the song “Altar Of Worms” can be viewed at this location.
CORPSESSED was spawned from putrescent slime in 2007, after the dissolution of an earlier project Skullfucker. Vocalist Niko Matilainen (Skullfucker), guitarist Matti Mäkelä (Tyranny, Wormphlegm) and drummer Jussi-Pekka Manner (Skullfucker, Pohjoinen Kuri) were joined by guitarist Jyri Lustig (Cardinals Folly) and the (de)composing of morbid death metal tunes began at the rotting houses of the Järvenpää delta-area.
The group’s original bass player Mikko Mäkelä disappeared in unknown circumstances, but was replaced in 2009 by Mikko Pöllä (Azure).
Look for CORPSESSED’s debut EP out soon on Dark Decent Records (CD only), with vinyl treatment coming courtesy of French label Ostra Records.
