In March 2010, EVILE’s OL DRAKE issued the following statement upon realising his band had been nominated for a Metal Hammer Golden God award:
“If we win, I promise we will do a bungee jump, dressed as cowboys. I’m writing that without checking if anyone else will do it, but that’s how I roll. But I definitely will.”
Four months later, Metal Hammer Golden God award in hand, OL and EVILE are facing up to the consequences of that statement. OL DRAKE, lead guitarist of EVILE and recipient of Metal Hammer Golden Gods “Metal As Fuck” award, will bungee jump for charity dressed as a cowboy. Accompanying him will be ALEXANDER MILAS, editor of Metal Hammer magazine and winner of 2009 “PPA Editor of the Year” award.
OL DRAKE will be jumping in aid of the British Lung Foundation, in memory of late EVILE bassist MIKE ALEXANDER. The British Lung Foundation are the only UK charity that helps people with any lung condition. There are 8 million people in this country with lung disease – whether it’s pneumonia, asthma, COPD, or lung cancer, the charity strives to be there for them and their loved ones. The British Lung Foundation provides information and support for people with pulmonary embolisms and their families via the help line, publications and recent scientific research into the condition. For more information, go to http://www.lunguk.org
ALEXANDER MILAS will be jumping in aid of the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout cancer charity, in memory of DIO. Stand Up and Shout is primarily to provide free cancer screening programs and testing to the public regardless of any individual’s ability to pay for it, and to provide financial assistance to cancer patients who are burdened with the cost of healthcare. For more information, go to http://www.ronniejamesdio.com
OL DRAKE recalls how he nonchalantly suggested a bungee jump dressed as a cowboy:
“I remember when we were nominated for Best UK Band at the Metal Hammer awards. We were up against Judas Priest, so naturally I thought there’s no competition there. I thought, why not make a ridiculous statement that won’t happen, because we can’t, and shouldn’t, beat Judas Priest. I said I would bungee jump dressed as a cowboy if we won an award at the Golden Gods.
“Little did I know we would win the ‘Metal as Fuck’ award. I’m a man of my word, so I’m going to do it along with Metal Guru and MH Editor, Alexander Milas. Instead of it just being some silly joke, I thought it would be great to make this a jump for charity, and that’s why I want to help raise awareness for the British Lung Foundation in memory of our late bassist, Mike Alexander, who passed away from a pulmonary embolism last year.”
ALEXANDER MILAS comments on why he is standing by OL DRAKE and joining in this jump for charity:
“When Ol first told me he wanted to jump off a bridge in a cowboy outfit, I thought: ‘wow, that sounds fucking idiotic – can I come?’ So imagine my dismay when he later replied that he was actually serious. Why the cowboy outfits? I have no idea, but I figure if you’re going into battle with gravity, you might as well do it in style, and generate some cash for a charity in honour of one of the greatest heavy metal singers of all time, Ronnie James Dio. It’s my hope that with this act of sheer metallic tomfoolery, we can help raise some cash for a truly worth causes, the Stand Up And Shout Foundation for my part, and the British Lung Foundation in honour of the late, great Mike Alexander for Ol.”
EVILE and Metal Hammer thank you for your support.

Innovative Psych-Metal band will tour North America this fall with High On Fire & Torche Aug. 12 — Kylesa will release Spiral Shadow, the eagerly anticipated follow-up to their breakthrough album Static Tensions, on Oct. 26 via Season of Mist. Recorded at the Jam Room in Columbia, SC earlier this summer, the eleven-track album was once again produced by band member and renowned producer Phillip Cope (Baroness, Withered). Static Tensions received worldwide praise with Spin profiling the band in their November 2009 issue, Terrorizer putting the release in their top five releases of 2009, Pitchfork saying “If the world were just, Kylesa would be a household name” and Revolver awarding the release 4 stars. Over the past eighteen months, the co-ed Savannah-based quintet worked non-stop including an unrelenting tour schedule that took them around the globe three times, writing songs for the new album and ultimately recording Spiral Shadow. Kylesa, who are currently on tour in Europe with Converge, will join High On Fire and Torche for a five-week trek beginning Sept. 29 in San Francisco and wrapping up on Nov. 7 at the Fun Fun Fun Festival in Austin. The video for “Alas, Lord Is Upon Me” was produced and directed by Rafal Szermanowicz and Grupa 13 who also shot BEHEMOTH’s videos for Ov Fire and the Void and At the left hand ov God. Fans can also check out a behind the scenes clip from the video shoot HERE.
Nergal comments on “Alas, Lord Is Upon Me:
“First of all, we’ve overcome ourselves with this new video clip. Period. It’s something we’ve wanted to do for a very long time. Pretty much no digital intervention, no blue boxes, no fake shit this time, but great filming, good acting, and a fuckin’ awesome storyline. It’s disturbing, crazy, and evil. We’ve had over 70 people working for us on this video so we can easily say it was the biggest production so far. I’m beyond excited! Wait and see…”
Dariusz Szermanowicz of Grupa #13 adds; “This time we decided to make something different. We’d like to make video in ‘cinematic’ style without so many VFX like in last two videos. We found great location, we had dozen of actors and extras and awesome stylizing. During the 16 hours of hard work we’ve created amazingly killer video!”

Selfmadegod Records is proud to announce the release of the CD version of the debut album by the U.S. death metal/doom band ENCOFFINATION, entitled Ritual Ascension Beyond Flesh.
Formed in 2009, ENCOFFINATION is the sepulchral embodiment of rancid death. Crushing, suffocating death metal doom of the lowest caliber. Named for the ritual preparation of the dead for burial, ENCOFFINATION exists below the plane of mortality; deep within the realms of death and decay. Slowly they lurch forth with their educated form of blasphemy, occult, and ritualistic expulsion of the holy from the earth.
This is the first full length from this amazing two-piece band, which is comprised of Ghoat on vocals, guitar, and bass (also in Festered) and Elektrokutioner on drums (also in Decrepitaph, Festered, Tombstones, Beyond Hell, Scaremaker). The follow-up to their After Their Temples Descend Below The Earth 7-inch, released earlier this year, this Georgia/Texas-based duo attacks with the 8-song Ritual Ascension Beyond Flesh, featuring over 30 minutes of cryptic metal influenced by early ‘90s American doom/death and bands like Incantation, Disembowelment, and Morpheus Descends. The album has already been released on tape format by Ritval Death Offerings, and the vinyl version is available on Psychedelic Lotus Order. Now it’s time for the CD version! View the cover art and more here.
Prepare for the most soul draining and graven death metal album of the year this September!

2. Nefarious Yet Elegant Are the Bowels of Hell
3. Miasma of Rotten Serenity
4. Eucharist of Bone and Flame

THE BLACK SWAN EPILOGUE is the name of the excellent debut album that comes from the Swedish progressive doom metal act BibleBlack. The band consists of some very well known Swedish musicians like Mike Wead (King Diamond, Mercyful Fate) and his partner in crime Simon Johansson (Memory Garden, ex- Steel Attack). They have joined forces together with Tobhias Ljung on drums, Jonaz Bulund on bass and Kacper Rozanski on lead vocals and this is what they came up with. A brilliant debut album. I had the pleasure to have a talk with Kacper, Simon and Mike about the band, the future as well as some personal matters with Mike.

9/13/2010 Regency Ballroom – San Francisco, CA SLEEP debuted with 1991’s Volume One album, recorded for San Francisco label Tupelo. Earache Records received the band’s next recordings in the mail as a demo. The label — impressed by SLEEP‘s single-mindedness and unique vision — immediately signed the band and released the tape exactly as it was received. Record stores worldwide stocked SLEEP’s Holy Mountain from November 1992 to this day.
The band then signed to London Records. Their debut album for the major took the form of one mammoth 63-minute leviathan of a track entitled “Jerusalem.” The band resisted the label’s attempts at radio edits and bringing in their own engineer to remix the album in view of “marketability.” London baulked at the prospect of promoting what probably still is the most extreme music ever recorded for a major label, so shelved the recording and dropped the band.
STREETCLEANER, the seminal 1989 album from British industrial metal pioneers GODFLESH, has been reissued and is out now in North America.

STREETCLEANER has now been reissued as a special expanded edition, with all tracks remastered by GODFLESH founding member JUSTIN BROADRICK. STREETCLEANER now also includes a bonus disc featuring 12 previously unreleased live tracks, remixes and demos with detailed liner notes.

Extreme metal at its very best, plain and simple, is what the Atlanta based quintet DAATH delivers. The group’s highly anticipated third full-length release is going to be self-titled and is set for an Oct. 26th North American release.
DAATH are currently putting the finishing touches on the new disc, which is being co-produced by the renowned Mark Lewis (Trivium, Devildriver) and Eyal Levi (guitars). Metal Mark from Skulls N Bones recently spent some time in the studio with the band and compiled a video series documenting the recording process, so click on the link below now to check out the second installment. http://www.skullsnbones.com/video/daath-studio-report-vocals
Sean Z. (vocals) further states: “This album will definitely be the most real thing this band has put out to date. It’s on a level everyone can relate to. The lyrics have taken a brand new direction and the music compliments the insanity creating a fucking masterpiece of a way different kind.”
Currently the group is more determined, energized, and focused than ever before and is continuing to expand upon their unique, uncompromising and dynamic sound. For those previously uninitiated, feel free to head over to www.myspace.com/daath to see what they are all about.
After debuting their new line up to a sold-out audience in New York this past May and then traveling to Europe to devastate the masses with shows in 16 different countries in 80 days (including two shows opening for AC/DC), Germany’s legendary metal band ACCEPT will return to tour the U.S. for the first time in 14 years on a co-headlining tour with King’s X. Their first show will kick-off the eleventh annual ProgPower USA festival in Atlanta.
Guitarist & songwriter Wolf Hoffman checks in about the band’s time in Germany & their upcoming North American trek:
“Believe me, this was boot camp, but we loved every minute of it! Twelve months ago, there was nothing on the horizon that would have made us believe we would be on the stages of the world again as ACCEPT… and here we are! [New lead vocalist] Mark Tornillo inspires us to get it all out in a way we have not been challenged before. We can’t wait to be on stage with him!!!! He is the new kid on the block and he is the reason we are back again. It is such a relief, such vitamin shot!!! And if we could, we would never stop!!!”
When asked what has surprised the band the most about their fans, Hoffman responds enthusiastically:
“NO DOUBT ABOUT IT – the biggest surprise is the way they make us feel welcomed. Of course we hoped the fans would be happy to have us back – who would not believe that about their fans? – but, what is happening here, EVERYWHERE we go, is a TOTAL KNOCK-OUT for us. WE HAVE NOT SEEN FANS SO HAPPY IN A LONG, LONG TIME.”

TESTAMENT guitarist Alex Skolnick has checked in with the following update:
“It’s been nearly ten years since my first TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA winter tour. Each year it’s been an incredible experience, traveling from arena to arena being an important part of the largest symphonic rock production in history. This year, however, I’ve decided to make the difficult decision of stepping out of the spotlight (and lasers, fog, fire and snow) and embarking upon new adventures.
The reasons for this are twofold.
As one might imagine, the Trans-Siberian Orchestra winter tour is a demanding one — with long days and an action-packed show that calls for no less than 200% of yourself, often twice a day from the mid-October rehearsals to the final show in January.
While the awesome response from fans and the collaboration with fellow performers make it beyond worth it, there comes a point, after so many years of annual grueling intensity, for some of us to draw upon that quarter of a year’s worth of time and energy in order to launch a renewed focus on our own visions.
In my case, this process begins with the release of a brand new (ALEX SKOLNICK TRIO) album to be followed by heavy touring, including winter dates in support of RODRIGO Y GABRIELA.
There are many other endeavors in the works, the information of which will be continually updated online at AlexSkolnick.com. Furthermore, as someone who has been on tour with multiple projects and running on all cylinders during the entire calendar year since 2006, reclaiming this three-month period will open up the option to take breaks once in a while, remember what home looks like, lessen the constant separation from friends and loved ones and recharge my own batteries as needed.
Of course, I’ll miss doing the Trans-Siberian Orchestra tour. The stage time, friendships and overall experience has
I’m grateful to Paul O’Neil and Nightcastle Management for the opportunity, to all the musicians and singers for the good times and to all the fans for the unyielding support; you guys are the best! I look forward to seeing many of you out there in different configurations.”
