Montreal’s Derelict Streaming New Music Online

March 1st, 2011
by EvilG

Montreal technical death metallers Derelict are streaming a new track online as a preview of their next album. Listen to it here:

“Perpetuation is about our current social system, which has humanity pitted against itself in endless competition and misery,” explains vocalist Eric Burnet. “We can choose to perpetuate this system until we burn ourselves out, or we can choose to do something more sustainable and perpetuate our species.”

This is the first of three songs to be released this month as part of Derelict’s new promotional demo.

“Although we’re labeling this as a demo, the production is full album quality,” says Burnet. “We went with Chris Donaldson (Beneath The Massacre, The Agonist, etc) again for the mix and master, and we got Sébastien Pittet (ex-Augury touring bassist) on fretless bass duties. All in all we’re pretty psyched and we hope this gets people excited for our next album.”

Check out more work from Seb Pittet at

Over the next few months Derelict will be putting the finishing touches on their next release, playing select shows around Quebec, Ontario, and the East Coast, and looking at expanding their reach to the US and Europe.

Derelict’s 2009 release ‘Unspoken Words’ is available in stores across Canada through Year Of The Sun Records, in the US and online through Relapse Records, as well as on iTunes.

Gothenburg Sweden based metal sextet MARIONETTE is currently in the process of mastering its yet to be titled third full length album at Masters of Audio Studio in Stockholm with Erik Broheden (RAMMSTEIN, TURBONEGRO, WITHIN TEMPTATION). Song titles set to appear on the CD include “Something Forgotten”, “Remember Your Name”, “Stand In Line” and “Lights Out”. Guitarist and backing vocalist Aron Parmerud commented:

“Our third album is currently being mastered at Masters of Audio Studio in Stockholm. These guys really know what they are doing, having worked with acts like RAMMSTEIN, TURBONEGRO, WITHIN TEMPTATION, and THE HELLACOPTERS among many others. We’re currently adding the final touches and making some final tweaks, but the light at the end of the tunnel is drawing very near! We worked really hard on all the compositions and we feel this is by far the most unique, dynamic, and mature record we’ve made. Here is a photo we took recently after completing the mixing at Pontus Hjelm’s PH Studio (Dead By April) in Gothenburg.”

MARIONETTE also recently completed European dates with the MURDERDOLLS – the band consisting of Joey Jordison (SLIPKNOT, ROB ZOMBIE) and Wednesday 13 – on the “Women and Children Last Tour”. Aron Parmerud commented:

“We recently completed our European dates with the MURDERDOLLS on their “Women And Children Last Tour.” It was great to get back down to play in Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany and Italy again. We want to give a special thanks to all of our new fans in France as well. We’ll be back to see you soon! Big thanks to the MURDERDOLLS and their crew for helping us make this the best tour MARIONETTE has ever done. We have confirmed a date in Copenhagen on March 19th; we look forward to playing some new songs from our upcoming record that we haven’t tried yet live!”

ALTARS OF DESTRUCTION – past, present and future

March 1st, 2011
by EvilG

One of the earliest metal-bands in Finland was ALTARS OF DESTRUCTION. They entered the scene along STONE, AIRDASH, A.R.G. and NATIONAL NAPALM SYNDICATE in the second half of the 1980s.

However, due to some twists of fate and a record deal that after all did not happen, the band went into hibernation. They might have already been considered history, but fortunately reformed several years ago and set their energy towards recording that one debut album they did not had the chance to deliver earlier. “Gallery Of Pain” was released in April 2010 through Violent Journey Records. Autumn of 2010 saw the first video, “Cross The Line (Of No Return)” by Jani “ViSKi” Viskari.

A new Interview by fireangel / Night Elves is the first AOD-interview in English and also the first one to cover AOD’s story extensively. Interviewees were Kimmo Osmo (Guitar), Pasi Osmo (Bass) and Mika Luoma (Vocals).

Some excerpts:

Anja Fireangel: When the band was formed in 1986, you were between 16 and 18 years old. When and how did you learn to play an instrument or to do vocals? Which were your heroes that motivated you so much to start a band yourself? How did the band members get into contact with each other?

Pasi Osmo: I was 17 when I started to play seriously. First playing guitar for a few months and singing for my own band. My brother Kimmo had a band of his own with some school buddies, playing bass and [doing] vocals, but wanted to change over to guitar. He convinced me into joining his band and taking the bassist role. This was a good decision, because the bass works better for me, and Kimmo is more talented with guitar than I could ever be.

Back then in the mid 80’s we listened to old heavy, BLACK SABBATH, DEEP PURPLE, LED ZEPPELIN etc., gradually bands like VENOM, SLAYER, METALLICA etc., stepped into the picture. All of these bands have made an impression on our music. There were no famous thrash bands in Finland yet at that point, but metal-wise we had great names like ZERO NINE, TAROT and OZ.”

“Anja Fireangel: In Kimmo’s photoalbum on Myspace is a newspaper-scan about AOD playing a gig with STONE and added comments about how at a similar gig with them the police came because stage diving was not permitted. Could you please tell of that gig and also in general how the atmosphere at your concerts was?

Kimmo Osmo: The atmosphere back then at shows was real intense and sometimes brutal, and our audience sure knew how to put on a show of their own… We played joint gigs with STONE, AIRDASH, and PRESTIGE. One of the gigs with STONE was definitely the most memorable, when the crowd started stage diving and the cops stopped their show…then hell broke loose.

THE OCEAN will be touring in support of their 2010 separately-issued double album: Heliocentric and Anthropocentric (released in April and November 2010 respectively). This mammoth conceptual effort took almost two years to complete. From a lyrical and artistic point of view, the albums represent a fundamental and philosophical critique of Christianity. Both albums scored rave reviews worldwide, including Album Of The Month in Metal Hammer Germany, Italy and Greece, and a cover feature in the December issue of Metal Hammer UK’s/Subterranea (their extreme metal supplement). Said AMG Magazine: “This is the most forward-thinking statement by THE OCEAN yet, and stands as the most seamlessly integrated and consistent recording they’ve issued to date.” Added Rock Sound (UK): “Luxurious, tectonic, ingenious, calculated, charismatic, enterprising, dexterous, inventive, unrestrained, fascinating and poignant. If all this doesn’t convince you to at least check them out, then seriously, fuck off.”

Fresh off a month long run with Eluveitie, Los Angeles’ Holy Grail will be teaming up with Canadian band Cauldron for a North American tour April 15th through May 12th. Holy Grail will close all U.S shows and Cauldron will close all Canadian dates. Local bands chosen by Holy Grail, Cauldron, and the tour’s promoters will fill out the bills in each market.

Holy Grail has been touring in support of their fall 2010 release, “Crisis in Utopia”, and has supported Exodus, Blind Guardian, and Eluveitie so far in the touring cycle. Prior to this tour, Holy Grail will be going to the UK for a co-headline tour with Roadrunner Records band Revoker.

Only assembled a few years ago, Holy Grail is already at the forefront of the new wave of metal that pays homage to such legends as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Dio. The band’s debut EP IMPROPER BURIAL (released in late 2009), featuring just two original tracks and two covers, earned Holy Grail significant press accolades including a 2-page feature in hometown paper LA Weekly, a spot on Decibel’s “25 Most Anticipated Releases Of 2010” list and inclusion on Metal Hammer’s “Guide To The Best In The Upcoming New Wave Of Trad Metal”. Holy Grail was also recognized with a nomination for Metal Hammer’s 2010 Golden God Awards in the “Best New Band’ category – quite an honor since they hadn’t even released a full-length album yet! Metal Hammer sums it up best: “With a killer name, awesome logo and a sound that is more metal than metal itself, Holy Grail are one of the most promising traditionally inclined metal bands to emerge from the US in the past decade…This is metal played with conviction and belief and you’re going to love it.”

SCALE THE SUMMIT formed in 2005 while attending the Musicians’ Institute in Los Angeles. The band relocated to Texas in 2006, where they recorded their first, self-released album. After signing with Prosthetic, they released “Carving Desert Canyons”, which Revolver called, “a cinematic blast of intricately melodic fretwork and pummeling percussion,” in 2009.

The band, who received praise from Guitar World for their “tightly-woven guitar interplay, irregular time signatures and tasteful licks,” has toured with the likes of PROTEST THE HERO, BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME, CYNIC, THE DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT and were handpicked by DREAM THEATER to participate in the 2009 installment of their famed “Progressive Nation” festival tour. SCALE THE SUMMIT has also been featured prominently in Guitar Player magazine, and has tracks available for the Rock Band video game through the Rock Band Network.

IMMORTAL with ABSU: The Gramercy Theater, New York, NY February 19th, 2011

March 1st, 2011
by EvilG

Words and pictures by Kyle Moore, the Metal Magnus

The Gramercy Theater – New York, NY

February 19th, 2011

I was fortunate enough to cover Immortal’s concert in Brooklyn nearly a year ago, and at the time I didn’t expect I’d ever get to see them live again. But to my delight, the true sons of northern darkness came back to the States for a second tour. This time, it would be in a far superior venue to their last digs, where there wasn’t anything to keep rambunctious fans off the stage (one fan even stopped Abbath from playing to give him a hug.) It was an appropriately frigid winter night in the Big Apple, a sudden frost that dispelled what had previously been a very warm week. No doubt we can thank Immortal for bringing the icy cold of Blashyrkh with them to the States.
