Finnish Death Metal Special: Stench Of Decay Lie In Ruins Neutron Hammer Maveth Swallowed Hooded Me

April 11th, 2011
by Arto Lehtinen

logo dm special.jpg

Back in the late 80s and early 90’s death metal ruled metal in the catacombs of the underground. The Finnish death metal scene was one of kind unique offering tremendous bands from every town around Finland. Every underground death metal maniac still recalls with tears in their eyes when death metal gigs were packed and how demo tapes got traded and underground DIY magazines were informative and of high quality. How about the bands back then; well the list is endless! Let the name dropping start: Demigod, Convulse, Amorphis, Abhorrence, Belial, Mythos, Purtenance, Funebre, Xysma, Disgrace, Mordicus, Purtenance and so on. Many years have passed by since those days. Most of bands have vanished and some of them are more or less activate or some were catapulted to another dimension of success. Does Finnish death metal offer something new, and above all, more than newer bands of the genre? Of course it does, even though the Finnish death metal scene lives and well. Believe or not. The scene is awesome and tremendous as the bands of the present day sound brutal and vicious. The article of the Finnish Death Metal scene gives a half dissection of six great death metal bands. The interviewed members of the following bands are :

Ville : Maveth

Samu : Swallowed

Tommi : Stench Of Decay

Roni Ä : Lie In Ruins and Neutron Hammer

Roni S : Lie In Ruins

Lasse : Hooded Menace

Let Death Metal reign

News Update from US Power Metal Band Sonic Prophecy

April 10th, 2011
by EvilG

It’s been a while since we have updated our fans on the goings on within Sonic Prophecy and we wanted to take a moment and let everyone know what has been progressing the last several months. Throughout late 2010 and all through the first few months of 2011 we have been working hard recording the new album “A Divine Act of War”.  As a band we decided to make this album an eclectic mix of all that we feel makes our sound distinctly ours, moving forward with bigger, more symphonic overtones. In order to achieve this we sought out the skills of C.J. Lewis. His talent in composing several of the keyboard parts for our new music cannot be understated. His contributions have added mountains of melody and drama to the new album while staying true to the original vision of the music.

This week we finished the bulk of the recording sessions for the album and now it moves on to be mixed. Engineering credits go to Matt Hepworth at Studio Nu, located in Ogden Utah. His support has been crucial and we would highly recommend his services. We have also procured the talents of Valgorth at Hammerblaze Studio for the art and CD layout design. His epic and distinct work is well known throughout the true metal community and we are excited to unveil the artwork soon! Believe us when we say it is awesome!
Although we had hoped to have the album finished and released by now, we feel that the extra time has allowed us to produce our best work and come up with a significant leap forward with our sound. We hope that once you hear it you’ll agree that it was worth the wait! We will update you soon with clips from the new album, show dates, and other exciting news.

As always we appreciate you all more than you know!

Prepare for the birth of Symphonic Power Metal from Utah!!

Celebrating the wide acceptance of the debut ‘Modern Beast’ released last year and to present the new vocalist Ralph Wiltemburg to the public that follows the work of the band, the Brazilian bandREVIOLENCE released its new single ‘King of the Night’ for free download on its official website.

This work confirms the presence of the musician Ralph Wiltemburg, as the new frontman of the band. “‘King of the Night’ is a sample of what’s to come next album, which is already being made” says Edson Graseffi, drummer and one of the founders of the band.

BLACK SABBATH: ‘Born Again’ Deluxe-Edition Reissue Coming In May

April 10th, 2011
by EvilG
Black Sabbath - Born Again

Black Sabbath - Born Again

Sanctuary has set a May 30 release date for the deluxe-edition reissue of BLACK SABBATH’s “Born Again” album.

“Born Again” was the only album by BLACK SABBATH featuring Ian Gillan — who was at the time a solo artist and former singer for DEEP PURPLE — on vocals.

Gillan had first turned down the offer to join BLACK SABBATH but his manager later convinced him to a meeting with Iommi and the band’s bass guitarist, Geezer Butler. Iommi and Butler met with Gillan at The Bear public house in Oxford and Gillan officially joined the band in February 1983.

Released in October 1983, “Born Again” was a commercial success. It was the highest-charting BLACK SABBATH album in the United Kingdom since “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath” and became an American Top 40 hit. Despite this, it became the first BLACK SABBATH album to not have any RIAA certification (gold or platinum) in the U.S.

“Born Again” deluxe-edition reissue track listing:

Disc 1: (marked as “Original Album”)

  1. Trashed
  2. Stonehenge
  3. Disturbing the Priest
  4. The Dark
  5. Zero the Hero
  6. Digital Bitch
  7. Born Again
  8. Hot Line
  9. Keep it Warm

Disc 2:

  1. The Fallen (Previously Unreleased Album Session Outtake)
  2. Stonehenge (Extended Version)Live at the Reading Festival, Saturday August 27 1983
    (BBC Friday Rock Show broadcast):
  3. Hot Line
  4. War Pigs
  5. Black Sabbath
  6. The Dark
  7. Zero the Hero
  8. Digital Bitch
  9. Iron Man
  10. Smoke on the Water
  11. Paranoid

Updated details from black-sabbath.com:
Disc 2 first. The first two tracks are a cool inclusion, especially if you’re not into collecting bootlegs and have never seen them before. The first is an unreleased (officially) track called “The Fallen”. It’s a pretty complete track from the Born Again sessions that was left off. I can see why it was left off, but it’s still a great track, glad it’s finally getting to see the light of day. The other is Stonehenge, which is a 5 minute long version (as opposed to the 1:58 version that’s on the proper album. So that’s cool, too.

The remainder of the tracks on Disc 2 are labeled as being the radio broadcast version of what’s known as the “Paranoid in Reading” bootleg. In all the time I’ve spent running this site, the two things people ask me for more than any other were the Ray Gillen version of Eternal Idol (released last year), and live stuff with Ian Gillan. Also being released on this set. Now those of you who are into bootlegs and things like that will immediately say “Well, what about the rest of the Paranoid at Reading show? The full show is a lot longer than what’s on this disc!” That’s a valid question, and one I raised myself to Universal when they sent me these materials. I asked why not the longer show? The response I was given back was (I’m paraphrasing here) that the longer version that they did have access to was seriously more inferior quality wise to what the BBC had in their archives from the radio broadcast in 1983. They felt it would have been too obvious to mix the two sources to get it all in there, and because the BBC version was so higher in quality, they chose to go with the better quality over the longer track listing. Their exact words were “too much of a contrast!” So that’s that.

Now. Disc 1. Born Again has had a quite legendary status in that the final mix was considered by a lot of people to be poor. Ian Gillan had a few stories where he threw copies out the window, and threw up when he heard it. Or was that the cover? Anyway, the album has been in desperate need of a remix. Even Tony Iommi said as much when he appeared on Bruce Dickinson’s radio show some time ago. Tony said that the album would get a proper remix. It’s something the fans have been clamoring for for ages. So, what’s on this album? The usage of the term “Original Album” could mean one of two things that I can think of. Either it’s a generic term to refer to “Hey, this is the running order the album was like in 1983”, or it could mean that it’s not the famed “remix”, and is a new remastering. It’s impossible to tell from the track listing. None of the materials that were sent to me indicate whether this is remixed, or just remastered.

So I’ve asked again, point blank about this situation, and will have ANOTHER update when I get more on that. Universal’s press guy told me I’m supposed to get the formal press release for the album in the next day or two, so there’s also that forthcoming.

I’ve also requested a review copy, so I can give it a listen and compare it to the original 80’s pressing of the CD I have (from Germany), as well as the 1996 Castle Remastered version. I want to see how they stack up to the new 2011 edition, whether remixed, remastered, or whatever.

More to come…

black-sabbath.com reports: Armenian Charity Music Information

Who Cares

Who Cares

Some months ago there was news that Tony Iommi & Ian Gillan were writing new music, the first new music the two of them have done since 1983 and the Born Again album. Tony & Ian did work together about five years ago on Ian’s then solo album, “Gillan’s Inn”. If you never checked that out, you should. It has a new recording of Trashed on it.

But that’s the past. This is new. The project has a name, and it’s called “WhoCares”. The all-star lineup has recorded two new songs. They are to benefit a music school in Gyumri, Armenia.

First, the lineup, which is quite impressive.

Tony Iommi – Guitars (Black Sabbath)

Ian Gillan – Vocals (Deep Purple, Black Sabbath)

Jason Newsted – Bass (Metallica, Voivoid, Flotsam & Jetsam)

Niko McBrain – Drums (Iron Maiden)

Jon Lord – Keyboards (Deep Purple)

Linde Linstrom – Guitars (HIM, a Finnish band)

This was all recorded back in September of 2010, and finally we’re getting some details on it. 🙂 The new charity release will consist of two songs. The names of the songs are called “Out of My Mind” & “Holy Water”. This will all be out worldwide on May 6th. The primary distribution format will be digital. Meaning your iTunes of the world, that kind of thing. There will be a physical media presence with the release, too. There will be a very limited press run of 7″ vinyl for the album (a total of 1,000 copies), and a CD version. The CD will have a video, and a 30 minute documentary on the making of the songs.

None of this is yet available for pre-order, but when it is, I will make sure and get that information out for sure. Below is some text from earMUSIC, the folks who are distributing the release about all this:

What hides behind this new band name is in fact the renewed musical union between legendary Deep Purple singer Ian Gillan, with none other than Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi: the undisputed master of heavy guitar riffs.

The duo has recorded two brand new songs with the intent to support the rebuilding of a music school in Gyumri, Armenia. Both Gillan and Iommi have spent a lot of time in Armenia, fallen in love with the country and the people and have dedicated a lot of work to a nation still shocked after the earthquake that struck Armenia on December 7, 1988 at 11:41am.

The collaboration of Gillan and Iommi, who have worked together before on the Sabbath album “Born Again”, is in itself an incredible news for all rock and metal fans and will be the best of surprises to get to know who is completing the band:None other than Jon Lord on keyboard (“Mr. Hammond”, partner with Gillan on all the Deep Purple classics), Iron Maiden drummer Nicko McBrain, ex Metallica bass player Jason Newsted and HIM guitar player Linde Lindström are also featured on the two new songs.

WhoCares will release the 2 new songs on digital download and limited edition CD single on May 6th 2011: ‘Out of My Mind’ (and epic hard rock classic, destined to remain in time as a hard rock milestone) and ‘Holy Water’. The CD single will also contain the video clip of ‘Out Of My Mind’ and a 40-minute documentary that shows Gillan’s and Iommi’s involvement with the Armenia cause over the years.

There is no doubt that this is the most impressive rock ensemble ever to release new material in 2011.

Ian Gillan said: “The idea came as Tony and I flew back from Yerevan together after being inspired by the enthusiasm of everyone there to get this thing done. It was brilliant working with Tony again after all these years; he makes life easy for a singer. The other guys need no introduction do they…”

Tony Iommi added:”Some twenty years ago when the call came, I thought, well at least I’ve helped, but it was going to Armenia and seeing the actual devastation caused by the earthquake that really made me realise that funds were still needed. Despite all the money that was raised last time, here was a music school doing their best, forgotten, in basic tin sheds. After the warmth and honour bestowed upon us during our visit, we just had to help make a difference and get the school re-built. And what better way than to hook up with some of rock’s greatest players and my old mate Ian, both an honour and a pleasure.”

There is also a video promo out now in which you can hear some of the new tunes. Check it out below:

NIGHTWISH Recording Vocals For New Album

April 9th, 2011
by EvilG
Nightwish's Anette Olzon

Nightwish's Anette Olzon

NIGHTWISH mainman Tuomas Holopainen has issued the following studio update:

“Time to add the final touches for Imaginarium while waiting for Anette to get well. This means the celtic magic of Mr. Troy Donockley with his pipes and bodhran, the smoking fingers of Mr. Pekka Kuusisto with his violin and some additional percussion & tribal drums.

I picked up Troy at the airport on Saturday night while Jukka and Kai (Hahto) were generating some new percussive ideas and boozing at Petrax. When we returned they had already nailed all tambourines, shaman drums etc. Satisfied with the day`s work we celebrated the Cumbrian – Carelian Dead Poets` reunion by entering the realm of the ultimate alchemic magic potion called Salmari. Jari (Sinkkonen of Kotiteollisuus) also joined us during the night to do a new tattoo for Jukka.

It took one and a half days for Troy to record his pipes and bodhran. He even ended up doing some singing in one of the songs, which was a killer of a last-minute-idea. This particular tune has grown up to be one of the highlights of the whole album. Saturday evening was filled with the much anticipated Troy`s magic show, sauna and a Youtube medley consisting some of our all-time faves like the ultimate tenor fail, cat vs. printer with translation, Sony releasing a stupid piece of shit that doesn`t f…ing work, etc.

Pekka`s violin virtuosity stunned us once again when he joined us on Monday night to play a couple of leads. His hand-written notes make medical doctors` prescriptions look like Rembrandt`s art. A true genius of a musician with a big heart.

A huge thanks and eternal gratitude to all of you fellow imagineers contributing to this album! A special appreciation goes to Tiina and Petri, our studio hosts, caretakers and dear friends at Petrax.

At the moment we are recording Anette`s vocals, seven songs done so far. She hasn`t quite cured from her broken ribs yet but fortunately it doesn`t affect her singing at all. She`s never sounded better. Time to enter the lair of Mr. Karmila now and start devouring song number eight.”

Holed up in Finland’s Petrax Studios for the better part of this spring, Nightwish’s’ new album, Imaginarium, is scheduled to be released early in 2012, followed by the movie after an indefinite time. The first single off the album as well as the trailer for the movie should appear well before the end of the 2011.

Nightwish - Imaginarium

Nightwish - Imaginarium

A recent Imaginarium movie update from Nightwish reads: “If you were to witness an unprecedented magic trick that could not be explained rationally, would you want to know how it is done?

A child experiences something new and unique each day. Something that is often impossible for the child to put into words without the guidance or explanation of an adult. Often the explanation has disappointed us. Sometimes it’s better not to know the truth.

If you had the chance to return to your childhood – just for a split second – when witnessing a magic trick, would you forfeit that chance and seek for a rational explanation?

Imaginarium is all about such questions. They have been answered by many people who have worked with the album and the movie already in the planning stages. As the final storyboard is being created, the producers, the director, the band, the production designer, the concept artists, and the casting director all work together to perfect their various arts for the movie. Contradictorily, they often have to ask the question: “How can we weave that kind of magic?”

The script has seen many improvements, more than ever before. The truth about movie production is that the script is often polished right until the first day of shooting, sometimes even during the shooting. At the moment, a lot of loose ends are being tied together, and a lot of characters are changed substantively to act as either a negative or a positive force in the story.

The SFX and prop design is underway, as well as the casting for the main roles. Storyboard drawing is interrupted momentarily, as concept art is needed to outline the characters and the environments.

We’ve experimented with arranging the background score with the actual songs off the album, and the best indicator of success is the amount of goose bumps the combination has raised.

?These are exciting times, because the decisions being made now largely shape the finished movie. We can only say that we’re already immensely proud of it.

We’ve travelled a long road, but not until the next crossroads can we distinguish a sign “Imaginarium, X miles”.”

Nightwish recently announced that the very first show for the Imaginarium World Tour will take place at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, CA, on Saturday, January 21st, 2012.

This will be the biggest Nightwish show production ever on North American soil and strictly a one-off – there will be no US tour until later in 2012. Ticket sales will begin soon.

Beautiful Beast “Adult Oriented Candy” – OUT NOW

April 9th, 2011
by EvilG

It’s 1989 again – at least for 46 minutes and 34 seconds. With his new band Beautiful Beast, German singer and guitarist Julian Angel has recorded a late-eighties styled album that features melodic hard rock, hair metal, aor, glam and sleaze with a common denominator. “It’s a party rock album with style” says Angel who made sure the music always meets 80s quality requirements such as catchy hooklines, big choirs, virtuoso guitar solos and thundering drums.

After a few delays caused by illness and mixing engineer Rolf Munkes’ (Empire, Tony Martin Band) full schedule Beautiful Beast’s “Adult Oriented Candy” has finally been officially released on April 8, 2011 following an exciting release countdown on several social networks.

While the band has recruited a few select music outlets by fans’ demand for an exclusive pre-sale, the album is now available through well-known style-related online stores and download services.

Seattle’s blackened death metallers, BOOK OF BLACK EARTH, will release their new album, “The Cold Testament,” on May 24th, 2011. It is the follow up to 2008’s critically acclaimed concept album, “Horoskopus.” The album was tracked with Chris Common (Pelican, The Sword) at the Red Room Studio in Seattle and mixed and mastered by Dan Swano (Bloodbath, Nasum, Opeth) at Unisound in Sweden. “The Cold Testament” pre-order is now available, exclusively, through Prosthetic Records’ webstore; The CD can be ordered on its own, or in a bundle with an exclusive T-shirt design. Get your copy, now! http://store.prostheticrecords.com/index.php/sales-preorders/preorders

Vocalist/guitarist TJ Cowgill commented on the new album: “Thematically, ‘The Cold Testament’ will be a little looser than ‘Horoskopus,’ but there is still an underlying current to both the sound of the album and lyrically. This will in my opinion be our strongest, most haunting offering, closing another chapter in the Book of Black Earth.”

Look for the band, who have previously appeared with the likes of Watain, Cattle Decapitation, The Black Dahlia Murder, Amebix, and many more, to hit the road later this year in support of “The Cold Testament.”

THE SOULLESS INTRODUCES NEW GUITARIST AND DRUMMER

April 8th, 2011
by EvilG

British melodic death metallers THE SOULLESS, who are due to release their new album, ISOLATED, on May 16th, have added two new members to the group’s line-up.

Formerly known as IGNOMINIOUS INCARCERATION, vocalist ANDY WARDLE, guitarist STEVE BROWN and bassist CHRIS BALL have added KRISTEN DAWSON as the group’s second guitarist and DAN WILDING (ABORTED, TRIGGER THE BLOODSHED) as the band’s new drummer.

THE SOULLESS comment on new guitarist KRISTEN DAWSON:

“We auditioned guitarists for months, with not much luck for the perfect shredder.  The band While She Sleeps are great friends of ours and recommended a guy from their area.  They said he was perfect for the band and we trust their opinion so we gave him a shot.

“He sent us an audition video for the song ‘Earthbound’.  His was by far the best audition video so we invited him down to the studio while we were recording ‘Isolated’, the debut Soulless album.  We wanted Kristen to hear the album to ensure it was the music he was interested in.  He loved what we were doing and really wanted to be involved.  He stayed with us over the duration of the studio time.  This allowed us to test him out as we could get him to play along to the studio tracks as if recording, so we could hear every mistake.  He nailed what we gave him, especially considering the short time he had to learn the songs.  We spent two weeks with him and got on well so the decision was easy.

On new drummer DAN WILDING:

“Sam Bailey, who played drums for II, helped us out by recording the drums for the album, but was leaving the band to pursue other projects.  So we needed a drummer.  We asked a few friends to see if they could fill in whilst we searched for a permanent member.  We knew Dan Wilding from friends Trigger The Bloodshed, and asked if he could fill in while not busy with other projects.  He came to check the album out during the mixing process and liked the material so much that he asked to be a permanent member.  The band was really happy with this as we knew Dan to be an amazing, really professional drummer who happened to be a super nice guy too.  So, of course we said yes and The Soulless line up was complete and ready to shred!”
