SATURNUS – New Lineup/Band Photo; Seeking a new Record Label

Saturnus - New Band Photo 2011

SATURNUS(Denmark) – One of the most inspiring and widely recognised names in the melancholic doom metal genre started way back in 1991. Since then they have released 3 albums and an ep. A slow output some might think but with each one standing beside itself as a monumental release of emotional and crashing doom metal, one cannot judge or cast a weary eye. The band have just finished a short tour behind the iron curtain which brought them to Moldova, Ukraine, Russia and Belarus. which they put it themselves as ” exceeding well and above  all our expectations with full houses everywhere “.

Some words from Thomas, Vocals:

“Saturnus has been through a major transition due to a necessary line-up change arising from different views on how things needed to be run. This put the brakes on the bands progression for so long that eventually something had to break or otherwise we would inevitably have split up.

We love playing live whenever we can and right now we want to do it more than ever to follow on and raise our profile once again to echo the success of our last album ‘Veronica Decides to Die’ and previous efforts.

The new line-up is just perfect. All the things I (Thomas) have been looking for in musicians has been delivered perfectly; the creativity, the lust for playing live, the understanding of the universe of  Saturnus and the way to compose is just perfect.

I could not wish for better.”

Leaving Firebox Records was necessary for Saturnus and even with 1 contractual album left to be fulfilled, both parties amicably decided to annul the contract we had and go our separate ways.

So now the future lies open for Saturnus. We need a record label to fully get the ship back out to sea again, and believe me we are hungry like never before.”

ZAKK WYLDE – Black Label Society, ex-Ozzy Osbourne

March 21st, 2011
by Marko Syrjala

Guitar virtuoso Zakk Wylde is best known about his long stint in support of former Black Sabbath singer Ozzy Osbourne and leading his own band Black Label Society which recently released its 8th studio album ORDER OF THE BLACK. Wylde has gone through many changes during the last two years. His long term run as Osbourne’s guitarist came to an end and he also faced serious health problems in 2009 when he was suddenly hospitalized due to blood cuts. Fortunately, everything seems to be fine in Wylde’s camp now.  His health problems are long gone and ORDER OF BLACK is becoming their most successful release to date. Black Label Society’s new tour reached Finland in early March and in Helsinki we had a pleasure to speak with the man himself and hear all the latest news from Wylde’s world. Read on!

NIGHTWISH mainman Tuomas Holopainen has issued the following studio update

March 19th, 2011
by EvilG

“Petrax Studio, March 2011

A week or so ago I felt the Curse of the Mummy was cast upon us. The vocal recordings were set to begin on Monday, March 7th but Anette (Olzon; vocals) fell at her home just a few days before that and broke her rib. Thinking positive, luckily just that, from the sound of it it could’ve been much worse. So now she just needs to rest and heal well before we continue, the new vocal recording date set to the beginning of April. We’ll take our time and do nothing half-way at this point.

So we called Marco to enter the studio for a couple of days before he left for winter holidays with his family. We figured we need to make the best of the booked studio time anyway. The first thing he told me on Tuesday was that he’d slipped on his front porch and hurt his rib, not sure if he’ll be able to sing. At the same time Mikko (Karmila, the recording engineer) was lying in bed, sick to the core.

On Wednesday Marco was still hurting, Anette hadn’t improved at all, Mikko was still sick in bed and Tero (Kinnunen, the other recording engineer) was run over by a horse and a cart (!)

There was three more weeks of studio time left and I was alone sipping some Shiraz by the studio’s mixing console trying to come up with a counter – spell to put the poor mummy’s soul to rest.

Now, a week later things are looking much brighter. Marco was actually able to sing a couple of tracks thanks to Mr. Burana, Tero hurt his pride worse than his body, Mikko is back from the dead, and I just heard Anette was able to go outside for the first time in two weeks. Wonderful news! I also got all my keyboard, piano & hammond – parts recorded, we got majority of the soundscapes a’la Mr. Jussi Tegelman put in place and Mikko already started the editing process. So no studio time wasted after all.

Now it’s all about waiting for Anette to get well, getting Marco to record the rest of his vocals, and flying Troy over to record his pipes and show us some of his legendary magic.

In the meanwhile, a beautiful springtime to everyone. I’ll write more soon.”

Nightwish announced that the very first show for their Imaginarium World Tour will take place at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, CA, on Saturday, January 21st, 2012. This will be the biggest Nightwish show production ever on North American soil and strictly a one-off – there will be no US tour until later in 2012.

ANVIL’s Lips Message To Japanese Fans ” I wish you all the very best and hope for your safety”

March 19th, 2011

Anvil - Juggernaut Of Justice

Anvil - Juggernaut Of Justice

Lips, the frontman Toronto-based metal legends ANVIL, has issued the following message to the band’s Japanese fans via Facebook:

“Just like to say I’m sending my regards to my dear friends and fans in Japan. I wish you all the very best and hope for your safety. Japan is a place of pure determination and is the most highly motivated society in the world. You shall prevail…”

Check out Anvil’s official Facebook page here.

Anvil will release their new album, Juggernaut Of Justice, on May 10th via The End Records. The album was recorded at Dave Grohl’s (NIRVANA, FOO FIGHTERS) Studio 606 in Northridge, California with famed producer Bob Marlette (BLACK SABBATH, AIRBOURNE, ALICE COOPER).

Juggernaut Of Justice features the following tracklisting:

‘Juggernaut Of Justice’

‘When Hell Breaks Loose’

‘New Orleans Voodoo’

‘On Fire’

‘Turn It Up’

‘This Ride’

‘Not Afraid’

‘Swing Thing’

The album’s title track, ‘Juggernaut Of Justice’, is currently available for download as part of The End Records Spring 2011 sampler, at this location.

Frontman Steve “Lips” Kudlow recently commented: “I must say that this is by far the best Anvil ever. There will be a few new surprises including Glenn 5’s first lead vocals in Anvil’s history. The production that Bob Marlette has done far surpasses anything we’ve done in the past. The excitement within the band is over the top and we can’t wait to unleash this amazing CD to the fans.”

Drummer Robb Reiner concurs: “The new album is pure Anvil with a new fresh kick, very exciting. Looking to rocking with The End, putting the music where it belongs – in everybody’s ears and face!”

Prior to the release of Juggernaut Of Justice, The End will be releasing the definitive Anvil anthology. The collection will be comprised of classics old and new, with some surprises, and will showcase the band’s entire career spanning back to 1978.

DON JAMIESON to release “Live and Hilarious” April 26th, 2011

March 19th, 2011
by EvilG

New audio clip from the album and an interview with Metal Blade’s Brian Slagel available

Agoura Hills, CA – March 18th, 2011 – Comedian Don Jamieson is set to release his debut album, Live and Hilarious, on April 26th, 2011 via Metal Blade Records. The album was recorded at Bar Anticipation (or “Bar A”, as we’ve been told it’s referred to as over in Jersey) on January 30th, 2011 in front of a room packed full of comedy and metal fans. The show was a resounding success and will set the bar high for Metal Blade Records’ first EVER stand-up comedy release! The album’s title is a parody of Live and Dangerous, the classic Thin Lizzy album and Don Jamieson’s name/logo has been transformed into a Thin Lizzy-esque logo, which will be seen on the disc and on a new t-shirt available on Metal Blade’s webstore, powered by Indiemerch. Live and Hilarious is available for pre-order and a clip from the album, Metal, Music, Masturbation, can be heard now at!

Don Jamieson chatted with Metal Blade TV earlier this year to talk about his record deal with CEO Brian Slagel. The video can now be seen on and Don Jamieson’s official youtube channel HERE.

In other news, That Metal Show launches its new season this weekend on VH1 Classic. The first episode airs on Saturday, March 19th at 11pm EST and features none other than Metallica’s Kirk Hammett! That Metal Show is hosted by radio DJ and metal personality Eddie Trunk, alongside comedians Jim Florentine and Don Jamieson. For more information, head over to

“He’s a sarcastic, caustic rib-splitter who can wind up any audience and splatter them hysterically” – The Village Voice

Amongst his many accomplishments, comedian Don Jamieson’s proudest moment is becoming an “Emmy Award-Winner” for his work on HBO’s Inside the NFL. Don and long-time comedy partner, Jim Florentine, lent their brand of humor to the popular sports show; writing, producing and performing sports-themed comedy sketches.

The two have also collaborated on the hidden-camera DVD and Comedy Central web series, “Meet the Creeps” as well as a series of prank call CD’s, “Terrorizing Telemarketers,” which get a lot of airplay on the Howard Stern Radio Show. He is also a joke writer for the country’s best celebrity roaster, Lisa Lampanelli and has lent his voice to MTV2’s Crank Yankers.

Don’s stand-up act brings his everyday take on life, the hip, the cool and the tragically sublime into the spotlight. Besides performing at clubs in New York City, Don tears it up at clubs and theatres all over the country. For the last four years, he has been the regular opener for Andrew Dice Clay. His reputation as one of New York City’s top comics was cemented when he was asked to perform live on ABC’s Good Morning America. Don has also appeared as a guest on Joy Behar’s show on CNN HLN.

Don started his career as one of the young and talented comedy minds at MTV helping to launch the careers of comics like Jon Stewart, Kevin James, Pauly Shore (sorry) and Tom Green, but unbeknownst to many, Don was spending his nights on the local comedy scene developing his own comic style.

Making the transition from comedian to television host isn’t easy for most. Don has hosted his own series, OLN’s “Beach Ambush,” and is currently in production for the SEVENTH season of VH1 Classic’s, “That Metal Show.”

Enter 2010: Don Jamieson inked a deal with legendary metal label Metal Blade Records to release the comedian’s debut stand-up comedy album. The album, titled Live and Hilarious, was filmed during Don’s performance at Bar Anticipation in Lake Como, NJ on January 30 and will be released in 2011. When asked about why he chose Jersey as the location for his performance for the upcoming stand-up album, Don had this to say; “I’m a Jersey boy and there’s nowhere better to record my first ever live comedy CD than good old Dirty Jerzy! Malls, mullets and metal!!”

Ronnie James DioFormer DIO members Rudy Sarzo (bass), Simon Wright (drums), Craig Goldy (guitar) and Scott Warren (keyboards) will be joining forces with singers Tim “Ripper” Owens (YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, BEYOND FEAR, JUDAS PRIEST, ICED EARTH) and Toby Jepson (FASTWAY, LITTLE ANGELS, GUN) for a number of shows in Europe under the name DIO DISCIPLES.

Ronnie James Dio’s widow and manager Wendy remarked: “There will never be another Ronnie, but we want to keep his music alive and hope you will support the band and become one of the DIO DISCIPLES. We will post the UK/European tour dates as they are confirmed, and we are planning some US dates also. Hope to see you at one of the shows.”

A Ronnie James Dio tribute album is in the works by Dio’s widow Wendy according to a new interview by Noisecreep’s Steve Baltin.

“It probably won’t come out this year, but everybody signed up,” Dio told Noisecreep.

So, who’s signed on thus far? “Rob Halford (JUDAS PRIEST), Glenn Hughes, Dave Grohl (FOO FIGHTERS), Lemmy (MOTÖRHEAD),” she said, adding Grohl will do the Black Sabbath hit ‘Mob Rules,’ and Halford will be taking on ‘Long Live Rock ‘N’ Roll.’ And artists keep coming on. “I just talked to ALICE (COOPER), roped Alice in and SEBASTIAN (BACH) and Chris (Jericho),” she said, referring to fellow attendees at the Golden Gods press conference. And Cooper already has a song in mind, going back to the Elf days, according to Wendy.

Read the entire interview at Noisecreep.

Rainbow In The Dark: The Autobiography Of Ronnie James Dio, the revealing memoir of the heavy metal master, will be published in the spring of 2012 via MTV Books.

An excerpt from a press release reads: “with nearly five decades of worldwide success and album sales in the tens of millions as the front man of ELF, RAINBOW, DIO, BLACK SABBATH, and, most recently, HEAVEN & HELL, Ronnie James Dio grabbed the mic, took the stage, and led a movement whose influence resonates to this day. In Rainbow In The Dark, Dio himself will introduce the reader to this incredible life and the over 50 photographs included will provide readers with an unprecedented all-access pass to the rock concert of a lifetime.”

Erik Ravn

Erik Ravn

Mainman Erik Ravn from Danish symphonic metallers WUTHERING HEIGHTS has issued the following update:

“As some of you know, the reason for the current inactivity of Wuthering Heights is my bad health. For more than a year I have suffered from serious back pain. I have had surgery twice, but so far my condition has not improved. My situation leaves me no energy for creative production. Also, as I am currently unable to hold a day job, I have no financial basis for the recording or performing of my music. Therefore I am forced to put Wuthering Heights on hold for the time being.

Writing music and playing in a band has been the center of my life for more than twenty years so this is not something I take lightly. I want to be honest with the fans – I don’t want them holding on to false hope for new music from Wuthering Heights in the near future. I would rather everyone be pleasantly surprised when we (hopefully) do something again further down the line.

You will still be able to contact the band via our website and email address, courtesy of Intromental Management.

Finally, let me take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in the amazing rollercoaster ride that has been the history of Wuthering Heights – most importantly our fans, without whom none of this would matter anyway.”

WOODS 4: THE GREEN ALBUM, the latest album from Canadian blackened doom merchants WOODS OF YPRES, has just been released in Europe and is due to hit North America on Tuesday, March 22nd.

WOODS OF YPRES founding member and frontman DAVID GOLD recently took some time to discuss the writing process for the album.  Read part 2 below:

“A year from the day I arrived back in Canada, July 2009, we were in the studio with a new band, two tours already behind us, and we were recording W4: The Green Album.  By the fall and another tour later, we were signed to Earache Records.  Now, March 2011, The Green Album gets a worldwide release, less than two years since we started writing it and less than four years since I first said ‘fuck it all’ and moved to Seoul.  What can I say?  The plan?  It was just so crazy that it worked!

“The Green Album was certainly the only album I knew how to write as it was the only thing still preoccupying what was left of my heart and brain at the time and I’m thankful that something good could come of it all, after all.  The 16 songs of the album tell the story through the stages of such a journey that inevitably gets a whole lot worse before it gets any better.  What starts with total life-changing devastation ends with the arrival of spring again and the promise of summer.  If nothing else at all, at the time, it was enough.

“W4: The Green Album was certainly an inspired creation and has more reason to exist than anything else we’d ever written to date.  It wasn’t just more music for music’s sake, but literally life and death, to me.  That album is honest, about something real and based on true events.  At nearly 80 minutes of music ranging from gothic doom, post-rock, sludge, prog and forest metal, listen, take what you like and leave the rest.

“These have been a rather painful four years for a lot of people.  If you’ve recently felt your world shift and experienced change against your will, you’ll likely relate to W4: The Green Album.  Four years later, acceptance is hope for the rest of the journey, for we’ve found that the journey does continue after all.  Grieve the loss of everything you once loved but always keep moving forward.  Drag that weight!”

Gross, Grimy, Groove is the best way to describe Southern California’s THE DEVASTATED.

Now, Century Media is excited to announce that THE DEVASTATED has inked a worldwide deal with the label and is gearing up to release this dirty, destructive record this summer.
