Maurizio Iacono, vocalist of iconic Canadian extreme metallers KATAKLYSM, recently gave us a track by track break down of the their new album Heaven’s Venom. The following is Part 2 of the commentary, which encompasses tracks 4 – 7 from the album.
“Push the Venom”:
“One of my faves on the album for its simple in your face approach. The first video and single off the album. Aggressive with no compromise and you will be singing ‘Push the Venom’! This one deals with people who think they know you but they don’t and judge you for it with no merit.”
“Hail the Renegade”:
“A more experimental KATAKLYSM on this song but again an undeniable KATAKLYSM approach. Song is straight forward with weird patterns and a bass solo that will blow your mind. Again some old KATAKLYSM here and a very cool JFK speech at the end. Song deals with the protecting our freedoms at any cost necessary and showing that this battle has been on going since the very beginning of civilization and still today.”
“As the Walls Collapse”:
“This song is in the melodic haven where the intricate clashes the dark melodies. A very fist pumping song. I can see this one becoming a fan favorite very quickly. IRON MAIDEN would be proud. Song is about feeling imprisoned and having those walls around you and what it takes to bring them down.”
“Numb & Intoxicated”:
“This is a mid paced melodic and chugging track. To the point Death metal with a crazy chorus riff that would make Zack Wylde bang his head. Song title says it all.” Read the rest of this entry »

With the release of their debut single Haunted House Tapes in May on Heavy Artillery Records, Italy’s traditional heavy metal warriors SIGN OF THE JACKAL threw their hat in a ring that has been predominantly dominated by the Swedes, Germans and Americans to date. Their female fronted melodic metal attack fuses influences from classic Italian horror films from legends such as Lucio Fulci, Mario Bava and Dario Argento with pure heavy metal for fans of Warlock, Iron Maiden, Acid, Bitch and Blacklace or more recently, Enforcer, RAM, White Wizzard and Cauldron. Eager to earn their share of fandom in the resurging world of traditional heavy metal, SIGN OF THE JACKAL offer a preview of the demo version of “Night of the Undead” from their forthcoming debut album In the Mark of the Beast, tentatively scheduled for a March 2011 worldwide release on Heavy Artillery Records.

Born in the frigid winter of 2007 in the Rovereto, Italy four friends were brought together by a mutual passion for classic heavy metal and horror movies. These four friendssought to create a band that paid homage to such 80’s metal legends as Warlock, Black Knight, Taist of Iron, Black Lace, Judas Priest and Lizzy Borden-that band became SIGN OF THE JACKAL. The core of the band was formed with Bob on rhythm/lead guitar, Sergio Mate on drums, Kill on bass and lead vocalist and front woman Laura on vocals. The bulk of gigs in their first year found SIGN OF THE JACKAL covering their favorite classic metal songs, opting to avoid the hits and instead keep things interesting with a set list full of rare b-sides and obscure album tracks. However, the band desired to write their own songs and have a fuller sound so in April 2008 rhythm guitarist Max was added to complete the line-up. With the line up complete, SIGN OF THE JACKAL quickly found their own sound, meshing together classic metal and horror influences to create a buzz for themselves amongst European underground metal fans. By Winter 2008 SIGN OF THE JACKAL’s debut two track demo, the aptly-named Haunted House Tapes, found its way across the Atlantic to American underground metal fans and ultimately to HEAVY ARTILLERY RECORDS which gave Haunted House Tapes the vinyl treatment.

Ruisrock celebrated its 40th anniversary in sunny Ruissalo. Although the festival lineup included mostly domestic artists, there were lots of interesting foreign names as well such as the legendary Ozzy Osbourne, former Guns’n Roses guitarist Slash, Arch Enemy, and Amon Amarth represented the heavier side while there were also a long list of bands from pop, punk, prog and alternative worlds as well. Such names as: Billy Talent, Canned Heat, NOFX, Flogging Molly and the Sounds show clearly how versatile the festival Ruisrock is and that mix seems to work out well. Altogether there were over 70,000 visitors in Ruisrock during three days.
Steve DiGiorgio is known for his work with Sadus, Death, Testament, and of course been involved in a plenty of other great outputs. The man has gained the respected status in the metal world amongst musicians. His skill and passion to play various types of music from metal to jazz is nothing short of phenomenal. When Florida’s death metal squad Obituary conquered the European festivals including the Tuska Open Air Steve DiGiorgio had been recruited to handle the bass. Therefore, it was a great opportunity to have a chat with Mr. DiGiorgio.
Back in 1987 Death Angel’s debut album called THE ULTRA-VIOLENCE catapulted five young thrashers onto the map of Bay Area thrash metal. The years were wild and a full of touring until Death Angel faced the end of the road in the early 90’s. Since the Thrash of the Titans co-benefit show (for 2 metal warriors battling against cancer: Testament vocalist Chuck Billy and Chuck Schuldiner of Death), Death Angel has been activate even though the line-up has undergone a few major changes. Despite these changes, the Death Angel is still flying high. Their newest album called RELENTLESS RETRIBUTION is due out September 3 in Europe and Sept. 14 in in The U.S.A. It was an utter pleasure to have a chat with the band’s frontman, Mark Osegueda, to speak about the new material and take a glance at the past.

About the band: Founded in the summer of 2008, SYSTEM DIVIDE quickly became a transnational project. The band set out to revolutionize the conventions of the over-saturated melodic death metal genre, proving that extreme metal can have more depth than blast beats, while female vocals do not have to conform to the precepts of the “Goth” genre. In mixing many styles, The Collapse, the band’s debut EP, breaks all the rules of extreme metal and is a landmark release for the new band.
As opposed to interjecting simple, predictable clean choruses into contrived song structures, SYSTEM DIVIDE unites serene female vocals and extreme vocals driven by lyrical themes that confront and seek to break everyday themes of disillusionment, societal materialism, and individual apathy. Musically, the band delivers myriad styles of riffing and grooves, while augmenting the entrancing soundscapes with hard-hitting drums and intricate bass lines. These elements together define the unique, spell binding, hypnotic sound of SYSTEM DIVIDE.
In order to achieve this complex calculus of sounds on The Collapse, Cole Martinez handled tracking duties at Conquistador Recordings. Mixing and mastering duties were handled by Jacob Hansen (Aborted, HateSphere, Volbeat) at Hansen Studios in Denmark in April and May 2009. Artwork for The Collapse was completed by Colin Marks (Strapping Young Lad, Aborted, Nevermore). The result is a sonic and visual masterpiece that metal has eagerly been waiting for.
The band recruited Michael Wilson (ex-Abigail Williams) as a second guitarist after the release of The Collapse EP and continued writing material for its first full length, The Conscious Sedation, which will be available online and in stores everywhere September 14, 2010. Following the philosophy of ‘if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it,’ the band once again recorded with producer/engineer Cole Martinez. Mixing and mastering for The Conscious Sedation was handled by the infamous James Murphy (Aborted, SWWAATS, Lazarus AD, Sigh, Arsis).
One of the greatest hard rock singers of all time, the late Ronnie James Dio brought a stylized, sophisticated nature to the heavy side of rock. He and his band, Dio, whipped the London crowd at the Astoria Theater into a frenzy when they took the stage and plowed through the classic Holy Diver album in its entirety. Holy Diver Live features not only this 2005 performance, which is also peppered with choice tunes from RJD’s Black Sabbath and Rainbow days, but a bonus band interview. Originally released on DVD in 2006, this high-def version is a fitting tribute to a true icon. [MSRP $19.98]
Release Date: October 12 (pre-book order date September 17)
I’ve seen the trailer for your new video “Uprising” and it looks phenomenal! When’s the release date for online viewers?
It will be the first or second of August. We’re going to go down to Poland for an August 1st premiere which is the anniversary of the start of the Warsaw uprising. I’m looking forward to seeing it as well as I’ve only seen the trailer, the same as you (laughs). So I’m really excited. I’ve seen some additional footage without music when we were back in Poland in early June and it looks great. We actually told the director to cut as much as possible of us, Sabaton, headbanging, out of the video because we had actual real good actors. I’d never heard of the Polish ones before, they are the main male and female actors in the video. It turns out they are really famous in Poland. Also in the video is Peter Stormare who of course we all know from Armageddon and from Prison Break. He grew up only an hour and a half drive away from where we live now. He’s the same kind of fucked up person as we are (laughs). It’s a pleasure to see professional actors, even though we’ve been making music videos with 2-3 people in the production and then the band, you know you play the songs over and over and over for five hours. They do there to get many different camera angles of like the drummer or whatever. But this time it wasn’t like that at all. We were actually done after playing for maybe 2 – 2.5 hours in costume. I did some additional acting which was scary because I’m not an actor. It was really nice to have the focus on the story that we were telling instead of just six guys headbanging.
Did you guys request Peter Stormare to play a role in the video?
Yes that’s because we like him as an actor and our booking agent in Sweden is a friend of his. He knew of us through a Swedish band called H.E.A.T. which are on his label (the band is signed by Peter Stormares record label StormVox). They even played with us, supporting us for a couple of shows in Sweden and Europe. So we thought, we’d ask him…he’s a really good actor. So put it out there and see what happens. The manager said “Yeah, Peter gets 50 or maybe more suggestions about making music videos every year, so I’ll ask him, but don’t get your hopes up.” Then we heard back “Hell yes, I’m coming!” just like that! What he said made the difference was first that we came from his part of Sweden, and secondly, when most bands ask him to be in their music video they ask him to show up to like a desert outside of Vegas and have him play the bad guy, shoot people, go party and fuck hookers. But he said we had something different here, with a plan, a vision, telling a true story. It was not “Hello will you be in our video?”. It was like, “Hello would you like to participate, you would be playing the role of SS-Obergruppenführer von dem Bach.” I really admire him as an actor, and even more after. After we recorded the video with him we had such a fucking blast (laughs). I could tell you of a few things that happened but well (laughs)….
It’s not safe to publish.
No…it’s not (laughing).
The song title “Uprising” and what the song is about made me think of a film that I really like called “Uprising” which stars such great actors as Jon Voight and Donald Sutherland. Did that film at all inspire the song, or have you even watched it?
You mean the one with David Schwimmer from Friends as well?
Yes and Leelee Sobieski and Hank Azaria.
Yeah, actually I got that movie from our web master half way through the album production. I had about 80% of the song written already and some mock-up lyrics, temporary lyrics. I was signing “rise or fall” not “Warsaw” at that time. He heard it and said he had a movie that was about this stuff, so he gave me a copy of the movie. It was really a good help in finishing the song. I also saw a CNN Documentary that I found online…probably illegal, but if I could of paid for it, I would of, but the CNN Documentary aired in the early 2000’s like 2003-2004 and it’s about the Warsaw uprising. It featured a lot of interviews from the survivors who were actually fighting. Stuff like that is really a gold mine when trying to get a closer connection to the song.
