Mark Edwards

Performance during ProgPower USA Weekend Announced. Mark ‘M.E.’ Edwards of Overlorde will be performing at the beautiful outdoor courtyard of  the Artmore Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia on Friday, September 16, 2011. The Artmore is the official hotel of the long running annual PROGPOWER USA power and progressive metal music festival. His performance will occur during the festival weekend, now in it’s twelfth year.

Below is the official news release, which can also be found at http://www.progpowerusa.com/xii/news/04202011_2.html

DataReport Consulting LLC is proud to announce an exclusive music-filled BBQ within the beautiful open-air courtyard at none other than the renowned Artmore Hotel on Friday, September 16th.  In celebration, beginning at noon, the first 100 attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy a complimentary lunch!

Guests will be treated to a special live performance by guitarist and songwriter Mark “M.E.” Edwards of the veteran U.S. Power Metal band Overlorde. The performance will feature his unique and not to be missed “One Man Show” consisting of both original and cover heavy rock & metal instrumentals. He will also be joined by singers for a number of songs.  Special guest vocalists confirmed to join M.E. onstage include the acclaimed Norm Skinner (Imagika) and much-admired Paul LaPlaca (Chris Caffery Band). Some of these songs will be original music that hasn’t been performed live in 10 or 20 years.

The following video is from M.E.’s recent show opening for ZO2. Here, Paul LaPlaca comes together with M.E. to perform the FREE song “WISHING WELL”; an adaptation primarily based upon the version by the legendary Gary Moore and fatefully performed just 8 days before his passing.

Graspop Metal Meeting – 9 new names, 3 cancellations

April 20th, 2011
by EvilG

We are pleased to announce yet another batch of promising names for GMM2011.

After fifteen years of gothic rock/metal LACUNA COIL can safely be called a household name on the heavy music scene and what better place to blow out fifteen candles than on the GMM stage! Shapely frontwoman Cristina Scabbia narrowly missed out on the title of ‘Sexiest Female’ in Kerrang’s 2010 readers’ poll – much to the chagrin of many a male metalhead we might add. As for the music, Lacuna Coil follows a tried and tested recipe of contrasting voices, infectious beats and captivating melodies! (Saturday 25 June)

‘Can we make it? You bet we can!!’ has always been the credo of Steve ‘Lips’ Kudlow. For over thirty years, he’s been the driving force behind ANVIL on their ongoing mission to give audiences worldwide a heavy fucking metal kick in the ass. Lips & Co are primed and ready to showcase their new record ‘Juggernaut of Justice’. Anvil is one of the select few bands whose music remains as relevant today as when they started out all those years ago. Don’t despair if you’re having no luck with the ladies; after all, an eargasm is better than nothing.(Sunday 26 June)

Static-X have played GMM twice before in the past but this time around WAYNE STATIC is going it alone to promote his solo album ‘Pighammer’. The rest of Wayne’s wall of sound will be bricked up with a number of typical Static-X classics: hard, kinky and in your face. (Sunday 26 June)

Late last year, the American metalcore band AFTER THE BURIAL released their third album with ‘In Dreams’. The album is a prime example of what modern metal should sound like. After the Burial is definitely one of the most promising young bands in metal today. One to watch out for! (Saturday 25 June)

Raw, fast, hard and unpolished are just a few of the adjectives used to describe the music of Dirty Rotten Imbeciles or D.R.I. as they are commonly known. For three decades, this American hardcore punk/crossover thrash band has enjoyed a well-earned cult status. Thanks to little gems like ‘Dealing with It’, ‘Crossover’ and ‘Four of a Kind’, their music appeals to punk, hardcore and metal fans alike. The pioneers of crossover are still a force to be reckoned with and they will come, see and conquer old school style! (Sunday 26 June)

Even more old school punk/hardcore violence with THE DWARVES. In the mid-eighties, this American band shook the underground with their raw mix of garage rock, punk and hardcore. Following a seven-year hiatus, the depraved gang is primed and ready for the next round. Fans of pure and unadulerated punk rejoice! (Friday 24 June)

The DIO DISCIPLES are coming to town! Simon Wright, Craig Goldy and Rudy Sarzo have launched a Ronnie James Dio tribute project under the moniker Dio Disciples. Vocalists Tim ‘Ripper’ Owens (Malmsteen, Judas Priest, Iced Earth) and Toby Jepson (Little Angels, GUN) are to share lead vocalist duties and are two of the few singers capable of doing Dio justice. Wendy Dio announced the tribute project herself, claiming that “there will never be another Dio but we wanted to keep the music alive”. We have no doubt the Dio Disciples will do just that. (Friday 24 June)

Formed in 1980, THE RODS declared war on disco with their traditional heavy metal sound. Over a six-year period, The Rods released eight albums full of raw, powerful and uncompromising energy and they toured with some of the world’s biggest metal acts, such as Iron Maiden, Ozzy, Judas Priest and Metallica. The Rods disbanded in 1986 only to reform twenty years later. Today, the power trio are back with (a) ‘Vengeance’, their first release in a quarter century… (Friday 24 June)

Apart from THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, BLACK LABEL SOCIETY, we are also glad to confirm THE BLACK SPIDERS for GMM2011! Last year, this new British band won Metal Hammer’s ‘Best Underground Band’ category and their sound is sure to appeal to the fans of Black Sabbath, The Stooges and Turbonegro! (Saturday 25 June)

Check schedule here.

CHTHONIC & EVILE, Shrapnel @ Underworld, London

Friday 18th March 2011

Review: Jo Blackened

On arrival to the Underworld it wasn’t surprising seeing the queue going down the street & right around the corner of the venue. There was a great energy outside tonight and after a slight delay with opening time, you could feel everyone’s anticipation in getting in and hitting the bar!

I wasn’t sure how tonight was going to go, seeing two thrash metal bands supporting a symphonic black metal band, but I am pleased to say it worked for tonight’s gig.

The first two studio trailers can be viewed here:
Part 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TlWU_kS3hCs
Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orQKxu2dAA4

Attached artwork and promo pic were both created this time around by German artist Heile (INDICA, LEGION OF THE DAMNED).

Mainman & producer Peter Tägtgren recently commented on the artwork: “I really wanted something with a Nightmare Before Christmas meets Alice In Wonderland kind of feeling but with our mascot, the painhead in it. The artist Heile created what I wanted but did it in his own way. It really has this kind of Tim Burton feel to it. It will be really crazy on a big backdrop. We’re also gonna do some inflatable stuff with our Painhead. Its gonna be our Eddie, like IRON MAIDEN has.”

GRAVEYARD - Hisingen Blues

GRAVEYARD - Hisingen Blues

Nuclear Blast USA caught up with guitarist / vocalist Joakim Nilsson and drummer Axel Sjöberg of the classic rock band GRAVEYARD on the band’s North American release day to ask ten questions about their soon-to-be-classic new album, Hisingen Blues:

While touring North America in 2008, you played 3 songs (twice!) that weren’t on your debut album.  Did any of these make it onto Hisingen Blues?  If so, what track did the one you called “Funk Blues” turn into?

Joakim Nilsson: Yes, I think we played them more then twice though.  You can hear two of them on Hisingen Blues; the one called “Ungrateful Are The Dead” and the one ending the record called “The Siren.” “Funk Blues” or “Punk Blues” as we called it then is now on the backside of the “Hisingen Blues” single and is called “Granny And Davis.”  All the songs sound pretty different recorded than what they sounded like live.

The story line in the album opener, “Ain’t Fit To Live Here” and the closing track “The Siren” seem to be related.  Are they & was it intentional?

JN: No, they are not related at all.  The first one is a reflection of life and “The Siren” is about a nightmare of Roky Erickson.  They where composed at completely different periods.

When listening to “RSS” on headphones, it sounds as if the snare work actually MOVES.  Can this be attributed to Don Alstelberg’s in-studio mastery or is it simply tinnitus trickery?

JN: Yes, it is Don who pulled out some of Jimi Hendrix’s old studio tricks.  You move the sound from speaker to speaker, I don’t know what the term is called in English [panning]. ‘Panorering’ in Swedish.  Maybe it is some phaser on the drums too, I don’t remember.

Hard not to think of spaghetti westerns with “Longing” and it’s tempting not to even call it an instrumental due to the whistling.  Who is GRAVEYARD’s champion whistler and how many takes did it take to get the entire song recorded?

JN: Champion Whistler aka JJ Red aka Joakim aka me.  It was a lot harder to whistle than we ever imagined.  It was really hard to hear the pitch of the tone when I whistled, so it took a lot of takes to get it right.

Yes or No: Would Mr. Holden ever eat at a Waffle House?

JN: He used to love it, but he ate too much.  He’s more of a Dairy Queen guy.

The line “I’ve been leaving you since the day we met / And it feels like you have, too” from “Uncomfortably Numb” can resonate with ANYONE whose ever been in a relationship that needed to end long before it did.  Congratulations.  Who wrote this exquisite lyric and did they know they hit the lottery when they wrote it?

Axel Sjöberg: It was me.  I’m glad you like the lyrics.  It’s a hard topic to write about without sounding very cheesy.  Don’t know if I hit the lottery, but I got out of that relationship and into a great one.

Joakim’s homemade cabinet has become somewhat legendary.  Is there really a cigarette lighter & a bottle opener built into it?  What new features have been added onto it since your debut album?

JN: It’s a small combo amplifier that I wanted to use as a very expensive distortion box.  A friend of mine named Jonatan built it for me and we actually had to buy a customized transformer just for the cigarette lighter to work.  It doesn’t have a bottle opener yet but that is a really good idea, so I have to get that.

Would you ever consider playing an H.P. Lovecraft or Neil Young song at a GRAVEYARD show?

JN & AS: Of course. We love both H.P Lovecraft and Neil Young.

What’s the story behind the Black Sabbath poster in the video for “Hisingen Blues”?  Is it an original or a reproduction?

AS: It’s an original from the English pressing of Master Of Reality. There’s also a poster of Alvin Lee.  The posters are a sort of tribute to some of our heroes.

True or False: You are nothing without a Pentagram shirt.

JN & AS: What?  No?  Or yes?  Maybe.

GRAVEYARD are confirmed to play at this year’s Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival the weekend of June 9 – 12 in Manchester, Tennessee.  View GRAVEYARD’s artist profile on the Bonnaroo website here.

GRAVEYARD’s second studio album and Nuclear Blast debut, Hisingen Blues, is out today in North America.  It was produced, recorded, and mixed in 100% analog by Don Alsterberg (Gonzales, Junip, Soundtrack Of Our Lives, The International Noise Conspiracy) at Don Pierre Studios in Gothenburg, Sweden.  The album officially entered the Swedish album chart at No. 1 and trumped pop icon Britney Spears’ new album for the coveted spot.

Stephen O’Malley of SUNN 0))) Contributes Foreword to ‘METALION: The Slayer Mag Diaries’

April 19th, 2011
by EvilG

Bazillion Points Books is proud to reveal that innovative metal musician Stephen O’Malley of SUNN 0))) has contributed a lengthy foreword to the upcoming 744-page hardcover book METALION: The Slayer Mag Diaries, an anthology and memoir by Norway’s metal godfather Jon Kristiansen.

As a graphic designer during the 1990s, O’Malley befriended Kristiansen during the early 1990s, during the initial rise of Norway’s black metal phenomenon. He later designed music packaging for Norwegian black metal artists including Mayhem, Burzum, and Emperor.

Says O’Malley: “Discovering Slayer 9 in early 1993 was a significant step in my initial descent into the cultural underground via music, guided by the unique filter of Metalion. Right when it counted, Slayer Mag brought the black metal thing into human perspective. Somehow Metalion’s interview subjects were always at ease as human beings, projecting less of their anti-superhero or negative rock-star personas. I would say that each and every one of them was honored and pleased to be in the magazine… Slayer Mag really is a true cult.”

Years in the making, METALION includes over 600 reproduction pages from every issue of Slayer mag, spanning from the early 1980s through 2010. In addition, author Jon Kristiansen recounts his life’s story, from alienated outsider to central figure in Norwegian black metal to world-weary metal survivor. The book also features over 100 rare photographs, including two color sections and a portrait gallery of photographs taken by Kristiansen himself.

“The greatest heavy metal story ever told” will be available June 6, 2011, wherever books are sold, and is available for preorder now with two bonus limited patches from Bazillion Points Books, “America’s smallest but heaviest book publisher.”

AFM’s North American May Releases: SHAKRA, SUIDAKRA, VOODOO CIRCLE, U.D.O.

April 19th, 2011
by EvilG
German metal powerhouse AFM Records has an array of brand new titles slated for North American release in the weeks ahead!

Scheduled to hit the streets on May 3, 2011 are new albums from SHAKRA, SUIDAKRA and VOODOO CIRCLE.

Back On Track

The rise of SHAKRA continues! It seems like nothing can stop the successful Switzerland-based hard rock force, as their previous album Everest fought its way all the way to #4 on the Swiss album charts in 2009. Since Everest, the band have recruited new vocalist John Prakesh, and showcase their newly refined lineup on their latest piece of work, Back On Track. Recorded and produced at the renowned Power Ride Studios with the band’s own guitarist Thom Blunier, the new album is quite varied from previous releases, as SHAKRA´s catchy rock moves in some slightly new directions. Prakesh´s voice allows the unit to combine the classic SHAKRA sound with the most passionate, soulful and energetic vocals the band ever offered. [http://www.shakra.ch]

Book of Dowth
German Celtic metal warriors SUIDAKRA have trampled audiences at major festival appearances and tours all over Europe, Asia, Russia and North America since their inception in 1994. Having toured with everyone from Children of Bodom, Tristania, Soilwork and more, and are currently embarked on a European tour with labelmates Onslaught, continuing to reap worldwide mass appeal and expanding their diehard fanbase as they have with each release to date. Now in 2011, SUIDAKRA proudly deliver their mammoth tenth full-length Book of Dowth to the masses! Recorded in Gernhart Studio (Destruction, Elvenking) and produced by Martin Buchwalter, Book of Dowth provides fans with some of the most epic tunes and tales to date over its glorious ten tracks. The second album from supergroup VOODOO CIRCLE has arrived. Comprised of several musicians who hail from the classic hard rock elite including David Readman (Pink Cream 69), Mat Sinner (Sinner, Primal Fear) and Alex Beyrodt (Silent Force), the new album, Broken Heart Syndrome, pays full homage to bands like Whitesnake, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Rainbow and Yngwie Malmsteen, all major lifelong inspirations to every member of the outfit. Mixed by Dennis Ward (Pink Cream 69, Krokus, Allen/Lande) and produced by Alex Beyrodt, the twelve, bold anthems on Broken Heart Syndrome undoubtedly solidify why the musicians that form VOODOO CIRCLE are heralded as being at the top of their game, and makes this album a must-hear for all fans of the “classic” eras of metal and hard rock. And scheduled for release on May 31, 2011 in North America, is the new release from German metal gods U.D.O.:

Longevity, integrity and constancy; these are the hallmarks of German metal kings U.D.O. Formed by two former members of Accept — Udo Dirkschneider (vocals) and Stefan Kaufmann (guitar) — U.D.O. have been flying their triumphant flag since their 1987 formation, but their 2009-released Dominator was a true triumph for the band, as the endless praise from fans and metal critics alike will attest. Since Dominator‘s release, fans have been venomously awaiting the follow-up, and the wait is now over, as their thirteenth studio album, entitled Rev-Raptor, is confirmed for stateside release on May 31! On the thirteen-track album, U.D.O. provide the logical successor to Dominator; its concise rhythms and machine-like grooves are a perfect complement to the traditional and as usual outstanding songwriting of the band, and Dirkschneider’s incisive voice as always triumphantly at the forefront of the action.

Gene “The Atomic Clock” Hoglan (ex-Dark Angel, ex-Strapping Young Lad, Fear Factory, Dethklok) will be covering drum duties for FORBIDDEN drummer Mark Hernandez at the band’s upcoming headlining appearances this Thursday at Inferno Fest in Norway and this Saturday at Metropole Ruhr Fest in Germany.

States drummer Mike Hernandez:

“It is with true disappointment I inform the fans and friends of FORBIDDEN that I will be unable to play both of the headlining festivals this coming weekend. I have a personal

family obligation I must attend to. I want to put to rest any thought that I am leaving the band, and will hope to see the faces I miss now later on in the summer touring season.

I am very honored to have the mighty Gene Hoglan stepping up to help out and do these shows for me. Without a doubt, everyone in attendance will get a 110% Forbidden

Gene Hoglan adds:

“Hey folks, I’m real excited to be heading over to Europe with my bro’s in FORBIDDEN this week for their appearances at the Infernofest in Oslo, Norway and the Metropole Ruhr Fest in Bochum, Germany.  We’ve been great friends for eons, and Craig [Locicero, guitarist] has been my absolute brother since we toured in Death together way back when.  Not to mention that I’m a seriously diehard fan of theirs. For me, each one of their records was better than the last, and that’s really saying something.  From Forbidden Evil to the astonishing monument that is Green, I’d be hard-pressed to name another band who made the unexpected turns of their evolutionary process sound so damn righteous the way these guys did for me.  I’m also real proud to be attempting Mark Hernandez’s killer parts off their roaringly brilliant Omega Wave. Savage drumming on their latest, indeed.  My work is definitely cut out, without a doubt.  And I know Mark is excited to return as well.  If you are headed to the Infernofest or the Metropole Ruhr Fest (that just rolls right off the tongue, doesn’t it?), I’m looking forward to ripping some evil FORBIDDEN metal for you.”
