Without a doubt, THE heavy metal success story of the early ’80s was none other than Quiet Riot. After years of struggling in LA clubs (despite legendary guitarist Randy Rhoads being in their ranks throughout the ’70s), the classic QR line-up of Kevin DuBrow (vocals), Frankie Banali (drums), Rudy Sarzo (bass), and Carlos Cavazo (guitar) hit mega-success with their first-ever US release in 1983, the classic ‘Metal Health.’ Spawning two hit singles that have gone on to become synonymous with heavy metal – “Cum On Feel the Noize” and “Metal Health” – the ‘Metal Health’ album went on to become the first-ever metal US debut to hit the #1 spot on the Billboard album charts, and resulted in a solid year of sold-out shows and non-stop MTV video airplay.
Despite this being an absolute standout era of the band’s career, very little substantial video documentation has surfaced. That is…until now. Banali is in the midst of constructing a full-length/behind-the-scenes/warts-and-all documentary about the group (the first-ever solely about QR), which will focus on this aforementioned era, but also, recount QR’s entire story – from the first time DuBrow and Banali crossed paths in January 1980, through DuBrow’s untimely passing in November of 2007.
The video footage – directly from Banali’s archives – will include the aforementioned performance in 1980 through some of the last shows QR played, including footage of their Rocklahoma performance in 2007. Additional video footage captures QR in many phases, including a 1982 performance of “DuBrow” (a short-lived name Quiet Riot went by in the early ’80s), with DuBrow, Banali, bassist Chuck Wright (Sarzo was playing in Ozzy Osbourne’s band at the time), and Cavazo’s first video performance with the band, his second total. Also included will be live performances, backstage footage, sound checks, studio sessions, and interviews – most of which has never been seen.
Banali has already invested money into the project, and to make the documentary reach its full potential, he is having an online fundraiser that ends September 2nd. Fans are being called upon to help back the project, and lend a hand in its completion. Also via the aforementioned link is a list of the different increments you can pledge – all of which give rewards of QR-related merchandise, and as the pledge amount increases, so do the rewards (including such simply awesome items as an autographed QR photo that includes the late DuBrow’s signature, a personal drum lesson with Banali in LA, dinner with Banali at the Rainbow in LA, your own personalized ‘Metal Health’ platinum CD award, your name in the film’s credits, amongst many other cool opportunities).
As Banali says, “The moment my friend Kevin DuBrow died, my life and career went from sixty to zero with his final breath.” But now, DuBrow and Quiet Riot will receive a much-deserved video retrospective, that will leave no stone unturned. Get ready to bang your head and feel the noize once more!
The first stages of putting the documentary together are now underway, and a “teaser” clip of what to expect has been posted via this link:

The video for “A Voice In The Dark,” directed by Ivan Colic and produced by Stanimir “Staca” Lukic, is now available for viewing on the Nuclear Blast Germany YouTube Channel. It was shot in Belgrade, Serbia in early June 2010.
BLIND GUARDIAN vocalist & lyricist Hansi Kürsch checks in about the finished product:
“The storyboard of the video is just an individual interpretation by the video producer in accordance to the lyrics of ‘A Voice In The Dark’ and the album cover. Storyboard-wise, I think it is the perfect output of what art is supposed to be about: A constant inspiration to progression and new worlds. We luckily did have the chance to visit the pyramids in México when we played there in 1998. They, of course, have been my inspiration when I spoke to Felipe [Machado Franco, artist] about the album cover artwork and possible pyramids to be involved. Due to that, they also were an inspiration for Ivan [Colic]. Our intention, of course, is to have some of the images [incorporated] into our live set.”
As far as the band’s personal beliefs on the meanings of events involving celestial bodies, Kürsch clarifies:
“We personally do not believe that incredible things will happen during eclipses – usually. Things like that can definitely and easily irritate your mind, though. According to the Mayan calendar, we already have appointments on planet Earth for 2013.”
“A Voice In The Dark” comes off BLIND GUARDIAN’s tenth studio album At The Edge Of Time, which will be released in North America on August 24th and features album artwork created by Colombian artist Felipe Machado Franco (Iced Earth, At Vance, Axel Rudi Pell).
Pre-order bundles for At The Edge Of Time are now available at Nuclear Blast USA’s online store. The jewel case + work shirt bundle is available here for $27.50. The 2-CD digi-pak + work shirt is available here for $29.50. The jewel case CD can be pre-ordered alone for $10.00.

The band released the following statement: “2010 is a very special year for 1349. This is the year that saw the release of our pinnacle album ‘Demonoir,” into which we have channeled the darkest and fiercest contents of our souls and given it an aural form. As the album was released, the band was already on American soil doing the first tour of the touring cycle as main support for Cannibal Corpse. We were obviously rather excited about how the songs would feel and sound live and thus of the crowd’s reaction to the new material, but it turned out to work eminently. It felt fabulous! Furthermore, it became clear to us that we had to follow up what we had begun and go back to the States and play a headliner tour in the fall. This intent has turned into cold reality as we now embark on a co-headliner tour with Triptykon.
“Many of you are familiar with 1349’s bonds to the creative mastermind Tom G. Warrior, and for us it’s like pieces of a puzzle that fall into place as we now go on tour with Triptykon on their first journey to the U.S. We talk about two mighty forces that here will be joined; in 1349 we see it as nothing short of a great achievement that we could make it happen. We can promise you that 1349 will feed off this great happening, and we boldly state that every show on this Weltenbrand tour will be a triumph! We look STRONGLY forward to share some truly magical moments with our American fans on this tour, and judging from the reception we got on our short-but-sweet tour with CC this spring (hails!), this is gonna be A HELL OF A RIDE.
“To complete the line-up of this legendary 1349/Triptykon-tour, we have invited the splendid weirdos Yakuza as our special guests. “Come feel the Fire”…as Overkill would have said.”

Stay tuned to Metal Blade TV and Behemoth’s sites for information on when the video will be premiered. “Genesis To Nemesis,” was recorded with producer Brian Elliott at Mana Recording Studios (Goatwhore, Cannibal Corpse, Hate Eternal) in St. Petersburg, Florida, and picks up where 2007’s “A Symphony of Suffering,” (which Metal Hammer described as, “brave, unflinchingly inventive and jackhammer-heavy from beginning to end,”) left off, with a devastating mix of Floridian death metal and symphonic, sinister European black metal. The album features guest appearances by GWAR’s front man, Oderus Urungus, Erik Rutan, John Zahner of Savatage (who served as keyboard engineer) and Bill Hudson and John Slaughter of Coldera.
The track listing is as follows:
1. Into The N.O.X.
2. First of the Fallen
3. Lilith Ave Satanas (Bill Hudson, guest guitar solo)
4. Legacy of Kane (Erik Rutan, guest vocals)
6. Creeping Death (Oderus Urungus, guest vocals)
7. The Scar of David
8. Immaculate Deception
9. Graven Image (John Slaughter, guest guitar solo)
An extensive US tour will be announced in the next several weeks. The band has previously shared the stage with the likes of Malevolent Creation, Deicide, Atheist, Deeds of Flesh, Vile, and Impaled.
Swedish heavy metal sensations ENFORCER recently performed a blistering set at the UK’s Sonisphere festival in Knebworth in front of thousands of fans. With just a couple of weeks left until the band appears at Bloodstock festival, the members are feeling energetic and relaxed as the summer dates sail along smoothly.
Things aren’t always incident-free on tour though, as ENFORCER frontman OLOF WIKSTRAND recalls a rather scary encounter during the band’s North American tour with CAULDRON in late 2009:
“It was when me and Jonas finally got to Florida last year after 35 hours of driving. It was kinda dark. We went down to the sea to have a swim. Then I suddenly felt something touching my leg, and I was scared and went up to the surface. And then we saw shark fins sticking up everywhere in the sea. We even saw some sharks jumping… They were big! About 150 – 200cm, longer than I am tall.”
Thankfully, the young metallers managed to swim to shore, get out of the water and warn the others, living to tell the tale and finish the rest of the tour.
Thanks to the demand of metal fans across Europe, Metal legends ANNIHILATOR are proud to announce a much-anticipated headline tour in Europe this fall. The band has just returned from a hugely successful European summer festival trip, playing to hundreds of thousands of real metal fans at festivals like Sonisphere, Masters Of Rock, Hellfest, Kavarna Rock and others. Fan Footage of the last show in Bulgaria can be seen here:
Also of note, ANNIHILATOR have signed up with Steve Strange at XRAY Touring (www.xraytouring.com). Says Steve (agency director and Annihilator’s agent, also Eminem, Coldplay, Snow Patrol, Queens of the Stone Age): “I am very proud to be working with ANNIHILATOR as their International booking agent and look forward to a long and fruitful relationship with them. This is one band that you must see live.”
ANNIHILATOR mastermind and guitar legend Jeff Waters comments: “First off, it was an honor to play for so many incredible metal fans this summer. Seeing our good friends in bands and crews from around the world was a bonus. Secondly, I need to thank Steve at XRAY Touring for taking ANNIHILATOR on. His support is giving us opportunities we’ve not seen before. Lastly, for all you Euro-metal fans, get ready! We are going to give 110% for you, as you are the reason that ANNIHILATOR is still going strong and even stronger than ever: Thanks to the fans!!”

Metal Mind Productions presents Quartz – one of the first bands of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal era. Their albums showcased the true essence of late 1970’s/early 1980’s metal, delivering a stunning mixture of brilliant guitar riffs and passionate vocals. The group’s second opus – “Stand Up And Fight” – is to this day considered as their most stellar work, reminding the modern listener how real metal should sound like…
The band was formed around 1974 in Birmingham, UK. The first line-up consisted of Mike Taylor (vocals), Mick Hopkins (guitar), Malcolm Cope (drums), Geoff Nicholls (guitar) and Derek Arnold (bass). In 1976 the group signed to Jet Records. The label sent them out on tour with AC/DC and Black Sabbath, which turned out to be very fruitful for the band, as Sabbath’s tour manager Albert Chapman agreed to take them under his wing. Also Tony Iommi became a huge fan of Quartz and insisted to produce their debut album, which the band recorded between 1976 and 1977. With their self-titled debut release Quartz joined the ranks of groups such as Def Lepard and Diamond Head, proving that metal can be faster and more aggressive. Unfortunately, in 1979 Geoff Nicholls left to join Black Sabbath, with whom he stayed until 2004. Quartz continued to play as a four-piece. In 1980 the band moved to a bigger label – MCA – where they released their second LP called “Stand Up And Fight”. The album brought an excellent blend of Sabbath-like riffs with upbeat hard rock. Quartz managed to write some of their heaviest material ever which proved the group’s extreme talent and brilliant songwriting skills. The album was produced by Derek Lawrence, known from working with Angel and Deep Purple on some of their early records (including their debut “Shades of Deep purple” from 1968). After a string of live shows Quartz returned to the studio to record their third offering – “Against All Odds” (1983). Sadly, in the same year the group disbanded because of their irreconcilable differences.
This exclusive re-issue of Quartz’s classic album “Stand Up And Fight” brings back the true essence of NWOBHM, captured in these eight amazing tracks. The new digipak edition is limited to 2000 copies and contains a bonus track. Remastered using tube technology, digitally edited on a golden disc. The release date is scheduled for 6th September in Europe and 9th November in USA (via MVD).

The time has come to announce the first leg of WATAIN’s Lawless Darkness tour in North America. When the darkness of November falls, WATAIN will cross the Atlantic to set the continent aflame once again, this time with Behemoth on their upcoming Lawless States of Heretika Tour!
Set to strike in early December, the massive tour will be WATAIN’s first full-on North American assault in support of their fourth full-length release Lawless Darkness, bringing their flagrantly evil, intense live rituals back to ravenous fans once again, joined by additional openers Withered and Black Anvil. This will also be the first North American WATAIN tour to feature a full live lineup, with E performing only vocally instead of covering bass or guitar duties as well. Prepare for invocations of the most perverse kind. Legions rise; harvest time has come!
Vocalist E comments on the upcoming filth: “It is with a scornful leer towards our enemies and a proudly risen cup of blood towards our devoted followers that we now reveal our plans for America in the fall. We have also managed to sort out the past problems we have had when it comes to the compromised lineup for US tours, which feels extremely good. The songs of Lawless Darkness truly demand a full lineup as well as my total submission to the vocal duties, which is exactly what they will get now. Watain is coming, in all its horrible glory, and it won’t be pretty.”

CRADLE OF FILTH REVEALS TITLE FOR NEW RECORD
‘Darkly Darkly Venus Aversa’ due out this November on Nuclear Blast Records
ENGLAND – Britain’s legendary extreme metal outfit, Cradle Of Filth, has revealed the title of their Nuclear Blast Records debut as Darkly Darkly Venus Aversa. The forthcoming record from one of the most notorious names in metal is set for a November 9th release in North America.
The Grammy-nominated, Cradle Of Filth, has been a pioneer of extreme music since their 1994 debut, and has continued to evolve with each subsequent release. The band has consistently refused to bow to convention, or conform to prevalent trends and fads, and has constantly sought to push the boundaries of their art. This rings true once more on Darkly Darkly Venus Aversa.
A loyal stalwart to the satanic horror ethos, Cradle Of Filth has again created a concept album, this time based on Adam’s first wife, the lascivious demoness Lilith. Throwing medieval nuns, Knights, Templars, Greek mythology, lashings of sex, occult lore, and violent bloodshed together into a creative milieu, Darkly Darkly Venus Aversa is a dark erotic nightmare set to Cradle Of Filth’s unique scope of supreme vampyric metal.
Darkly Darkly Venus Aversa was recorded last month at Monkey Puzzle Studios near Bury St. Edmunds in Suffolk, England. It is the follow-up to 2008’s Godspeed On The Devil’s Thunder.
Whether through their wildly elaborate & theatrical live shows (which incorporate giant lumbering puppets, fire-breathing dancers, freaks and stilt-walkers), provocative merchandise (including the now legendary ‘Jesus Is A C***’ t-shirt), breathtaking artwork, or the weighty subject matter of their albums (their latest told the story of a French Lord who fought alongside Joan Of Arc before embarking on a horrific killing spree), this is a band whose uncompromising stance has been rewarded with legions of fans around the world, making them the most successful British heavy metal band since Iron Maiden.
