Christian rockers Stryper are offering fans a head-banging view of who their influences were early on, with the arrival of an almost entire album’s worth of cover songs titled ‘The Covering’. Set for release on February 15th via Big3 Records, the album includes twelve rocking covers, as well as the all-new original tune, “God”. And most significantly, the album marks the return of original bassist Tim Gaines back into the Stryper fold, setting up the first Stryper release in years to feature the definitive line-up of Michael Sweet (vocals/guitar), Oz Fox (guitar), Tim Gaines (bass), and Robert Sweet (drums).
According to Michael Sweet, the impetus for putting out a mostly covers set was a simple one. “Every Stryper album is pretty serious and pretty bold in the lyrical faith sense of the word. We just wanted to roll our sleeves up, cut loose, and have some fun.” And when it came time to pick out a listing of tunes to cover, all the band had to do was look back upon their club days. “Growing up, before Stryper was even Stryper, we were a cover band. We played Gazzarri’s on the Strip for years – we would do originals but also do covers, as well. We always did Priest covers and Maiden covers, all those bands we grew up on and who influenced us.”
What fans get is a CD that runs the gamut from 1970’s era classic rock (Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song”, Deep Purple’s “Highway Star”, Kiss’ “Shout It Out Loud” etc.) to 1980’s era heavy metal (Black Sabbath’s “Heaven and Hell”, the Scorpions’ “Blackout”, “Iron Maiden’s “The Trooper” etc.). “A few things we set out to do on this album was to stay true to the original – we didn’t want to disrespect the original versions,” explains Michael. “I’m never going to sound like Bruce Dickinson or Ronnie James Dio, nor would I ever try to. And having me sing the song puts our own spin on it. We just all did our own thing and with our own touches and feel – Robert, Tim, Oz, and myself – it has that Stryper feel to it as well.”
Big3 Records Chairman Bill Edwards adds, “We are excited to allow Stryper the creative freedom to do what they do best, and take this album to the next level. We are very excited about working with the band and helping make ‘The Covering’ a widespread success.”
To support ‘The Covering’, Stryper is planning a tour that begins in March, and when it comes to the set list, it will contain quite a few surprises for longtime fans. “We’re probably going to pull out four Stryper songs that haven’t been played in the set in years. And then we’re probably going to do four covers. We’ve also got a whole slew of other Stryper songs that we’ve been playing for a long time. So we probably have 20 songs in the set.” Stryper fans rejoice, more anthemic metal will soon be on the way!

In the midst of recording a new album, Finnish symphonic metallers NIGHTWISH have been preparing a movie.
Imaginarium is a music fantasy film based on the forthcoming Nightwish album of the same title and its 13 songs.
The protagonist of the film is a songwriter with an otherworldly imagination. He is an old man who still thinks he`s a young boy. While asleep he travels into his distant past where his dreams of old come back to him mixed to the young boy`s world of fantasy and music.
In his dreams the old man fights to find the memories most important to him.
This never-done-before project originates to more than two years in the past when Nightwish mainman Tuomas Holopainen first introduced his ambitious idea of the Imaginarium concept to the fellow band members and to Mr. Stobe Harju, the director behind ‘The Islander’ music video. He will be the director of this full-length feature. The film will be produced by Solar Films Inc. together with Nightwish.
The shootings for Imaginarium will begin this spring, it will have its premiere in 2012 and the album it`s based on will be released in an undefined point in time.
Nightwish will hold a press conference related to this project at the end of February.
Nightwish leader Tuomas Holopainen issued the following update earlier this month:
“In the excitement of Yuletide magic I wrote there would be secrets revealed at the end of January. There are big things happening within and around the Nightwish camp but the Big Boys and Bosses just sent me an ultimatum to keep my mouth shut for a couple more months, or I would wake up with a horse’s head in my bed.
I truly am very sorry about needing to keep future plans and sights still in secrecy. The purpose is not to annoy anybody or cause a carefully planned hype over the matter. Due to the changes in the schedule things will be revealed later during the spring.
The recordings continue, I’m off to E-Major Studios next weekend to put together all the files for the orchestral and choir sessions in London. I’m in daily contact with Mr. Pip Williams, going over the arrangements and new ideas for the songs. The demos he has sent me sound simply otherworldly! Beautiful, twisted, tribal and cinematic stuff. And with a theme album coming up, the mood changes seem to be more present than ever before.
Yup, it still is the Burton-Gaiman-Dali – amusement park we are about to enter.
More coming up once the mobsters grant me permission.”
Germany’s Metal Hammer Magazine recently caught up with Holopainen, who took them on a video tour of the “summer camp” where he worked on the band’s forthcoming album.
Bassist/vocalist Marco Hietala checked in with the following update at the beginning of January:
“At the moment I have most of the bass tracks for the new album recorded. I started already a few weeks back, but I’ve been taking my time with the recordings. It’s the luxury of having your own equipment and a former job as studio engineer. For now I’ve been taking it pretty easy for the last two weeks. The holiday season and all that goes with it, you know…
Right now I’m collecting my inner plutonium for the critical mass again. I always do that before recording something. After all we’re not a pop band, and these songs need some really serious explosives. Too bad you can’t hear them yet.
I just had to twist the knife here. I’m a sadist also. The songs are really good by the way.
Of course we all would like to see this project finished, released and out for all the world to hear. The success we’ve been blessed or cursed with is demanding in its own ways. Everything has to be planned in long term. All the parts of releasing albums, videos and tours have to match carefully when you get to this stage of things.
And so we all get fed up with the waiting. Try to be patient and we’ll do our best to reward you later on.
And so we come to this: I hope you all had a nice holiday time. Also all of those people who don’t really care about that stuff. It’s a new year 2011. Let’s make it a good one!”
New York, NY (February 10, 2011)–What would timeless songs like “New York, New York,” “Lady Is A Tramp,” and “Fly Me To The Moon,” sound like cranked out of Marshall stacks, crooned by members of Cheap Trick, Twisted Sister, Deep Purple, Anthrax, Mr. Big, or Queensrÿche? This can now be experienced on SIN-Atra, a brand new album to be released by Eagle Rock Entertainment on March 29, 2011. [MSRP $13.98]
This all-star project, created from the team that brought you the merry, molten melodies of We Wish You A Metal Xmas, reinvents the classic songs that the great Frank Sinatra performed and, in turn, made famous. These twelve cherished tunes, written by some of the greatest songwriters of all time, are given a radical hard rock/heavy metal treatment, resulting in electrically charged versions of the classics.
Some of the most potent and recognizable voices of rock rework such legendary gems as “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” “Strangers In The Night,” and “That’s Life,” including Dee Snider, Robin Zander, Glenn Hughes, Joey Belladonna, Geoff Tate, , Tim “Ripper” Owens, Eric Martin, and dUg Pinnick. Producers Bob Kulick, of KISS and Meat Loaf fame, and Brett Chassen, recreated these songs on guitar and drums, respectively, rounded out by Billy Sheehan (bass) and Doug Katsaros (keyboards, orchestration). Also making an appearance as lead guitarist on “That’s Life” is renowned rock guitarist Richie Kotzen.
These familiar favorites are beloved the world over, but they’ve never been heard like this before! “A fantastic CD,” says executive producer Wendy Dio, “keeping the era alive with today’s musicians.”

TEXAS – The Famine is less than a week away from the release of its sophomore Solid State Records full-length, The Architects of Guilt, and the North Texas technical death metal group is proud to unveil the music video for the record’s first single “Ad Mortem”, which is now live on Noisecreep.com at: http://www.noisecreep.com/2011/02/09/the-famine-ad-mortem-video-premiere/.
The video was shot in December at a steel fabrication shop in Dallas with director, Michael Dalton, in an attempt to capture the frustration of ferocity that permeates through the 11 tracks on The Architects of Guilt.
“As I talked to Nick (vocals) about this video, he let me know he wanted to not just set the feel for the track, but for the whole album,” said Dalton. “From shooting to editing, chaos was the ultimate goal.”
To achieve the desired feeling of chaos, the video combines quick edits of performance footage, filmed in the dark, cold Dallas warehouse, with images and video from traumatic events throughout history.
“(Vocalist, Nick Nowell) wanted it to be dark, chaotic and to feel oppressive, which is where all of the close ups and stock footage came in. As I’m sure my editor will tell you, watching hours of stock footage helps you to realize that mankind has accomplished both incredible and terrible things, and we’ve been to some really dark places. I think the goal of this video was to allow the viewer to catch even the slightest glimpse of that. And to maybe get stoked on some metal.”
The track list for The Architects of Guilt is…1. The New Hell 2. Ad Mortem 3. We Are The Wolves 4. Turner Classic Diaries 5. Bigger Cages, Longer Chains!6. The Crown and The Holy See 7. VII The Fraudulent 8. A Pavement Of Good Intentions 9. A Fragile Peace 10. Pyrithion House 11. To The Teeth

This year we are celebrating 10 years as a band since we first formed at the young age of 14 in a garage. This is definitely a new and exciting time for our band and we have a lot of news to report. We will now be known as BLESSED CURSE. At this point we’ve decided to change our name due to the ever-increasing number of bands deciding to use the name Devastator, and “…..tor” bands in general, that have been springing up these days so we’ve concluded that it is best for our band to stand out from the pack as much as possible, apart from our music alone, by changing our name from Devastator to Blessed Curse. This new name fits our band to the letter because of our extensive history of being a band from an area where there is not much of anything for a music scene and having to travel to build any kind of fanbase, life on the road, all the ups and downs and in betweens of being in a metal band. Also, about a year ago we were fortunate to meet a local fan of our band for many years named Clark Webb, who is now wielding rhythm guitar with us, making our band officially no longer a trio and making us an even more powerful force to be reckoned with in the metal music world.
We are currently recording our debut full-length album and are extremely proud of how it is coming along. We are back at Trident Studios working with producer Juan Urteaga (Exodus, Sadus, Testament, Heathen), who also did our 2009 EP Burn the Beast, so it is awesome to be working together again. The drums have turned out even better than we could have hoped for and the guitar tracks are heavy enough to cause an earthquake. Prepare for maximum reaction headbanging as we look forward to crushing the cities of Earth with our new tunes and spreading the Blessed Curse!
As of January 2011 we have inked a licensing deal with the label Cyclone Empire based in Germany, home to Evocation, Paganizer, Demonical, Fragments of Unbecoming, etc. Our debut album will be released by early summer and have a worldwide release/distribution everywhere excluding Canada and America where we are looking for a US label home to get our music properly released domestically so get in touch – firstname.lastname@example.org/#!/pages/Blessed-Curse/198232413527448 or www.myspace.com/devastatorblast

EVILE will be tearing their way around the UK with support from fellow Brit thrashers ELIMINATION and MUTANT. Each show of the tour will also feature a winning band from EVILE’s recent support slot competition in conjunction with Metal Hammer.
EVILE lead guitarist OL DRAKE comments:
“I’m just about to step out of the door to embark on our last set of dates before going into the studio to record Evile’s third album. Quickly reading through the Evile feature in today’s Kerrang! has put me quite in the mood for getting back out there, even if it is for five dates in the UK. Really excited to see all those smiling faces going mental, and hopefully we’ll have a raw version of a new track to play for you all.
“50 years ago today, The Beatles played the Cavern in Liverpool. 50 years after, Evile play the Academy in Manchester. It will be remembered. Just… not like The Beatles Cavern thing. Probably from me falling over, or forgetting a solo or something.”
