There is no doubt that PERIPHERY are innovators and they continue to raise the bar of originality upon the release of their much anticipated new Icarus Lives EP, which is now officially set for an April 19th release. This offering features a brand new unreleased track, a series of remixes and video clips. Its official track listing and explanation as to how this EP came together is below.
Thomas Murphy (bass) states: “Hello to all of our fans out there. We wanted to let you in on some exciting news! We will be releasing our second effort in the form of The Icarus Lives EP later this spring. We like to think of it as a supplement to our first album. It will contain a version of ‘Icarus Lives!’ with newly recorded vocals and the fantastic music video by Ian McFarland and Mike Pecci of Killswitch Productions, alongside several remixes of the song by the band, winner of our Icarus remix contest (Pete Graves from the UK) and a special guest to be named at a later date. We have also included a tweaked version of our song ‘Jetpacks Was Yes’ and the brand new music video by Eric Haviv at FUGO studios.
“In addition, the songs ‘Captain On’ and ‘Eureka’ (available only through digital download until now) will be made available in physical format with newly re-recorded vocals. To sweeten the deal, we have added a new song, ‘Frak the Gods,’ to give our fans a taste of whats to come as we enter the studio later this year to record our second full length. As you can tell, we tried to make this EP worth your time and money. We have put a ton of time into these songs to deliver to you an exciting and polished product. Thank you for all the support and hopefully see you out on the road.”
On March 3rd, PERIPHERY makes their much anticipated return to North America alongside Fair To Midland and Scale The Summit. When I heard that two of heavy metal’s founding fathers were hitting the road together, it was a given that I’d have to travel from the end of the earth to civilization to catch the tour. Read the rest of this entry »

The year 2010 was a very successful year for these relatively sensational and hard rockin´ Finnish glamsters named Reckless Love. The band got their highly acclaimed self-titled debut album out on Universal Music (Finland), toured hard around the globe (this including for example a memorable one-off show at Loud Park in Tokyo, Japan on October 17th) – and were basically getting their name around for all the hard work the guys had put into the band over the years.
Before the year 2010 had come to its end, Reckless Love had a couple of shows to be done; one at Dante´s Highlight in Helsinki on December 17th – and culminating the band´s very well going year at Borderline Club in Pisa, Italy on 31st of December.
Metal-Rules.com caught up with Reckless Love´s vocalist Olli Herman briefly at the backstage of the venue before the show at Dante´s in Helsinki, inquiring sort of a roundup about the ongoing year from the smiling and polite band´s frontman, about his short stint in the Swedish sleaze/glam rock act Crashdïet – and about plans the Reckless Love camp have in their pockets for 2011, especially when it comes down to their follow-up album that they are going to record during the summer 2011.
To start things with, let´s place Olli straight against the corner by asking one serious question from him:
The legendary American death metal-band Morbid Angel are not only recognized as illuminaries within their own genre, but as an influential force for metal music as a whole. The troupe from Florida are one of the true veterans of metal of the more brutal kind: the band was formed in 1984 and debuted with “Altars of Madness” in 1989; an album that over the years has won many polls regarding the best albums of extreme metal. The bands core trio of basist/vocalist David Vincent (who left the band in 1996, but returned in 2004), guitarist Trey Azagthoth and drummer Pete Sandoval recorded three more albums with different rhytm guitarists – Blessed are the Sick, Covenant and Domination – and all three stayed true to the bands roots while still finding new musical paths to walk. The bands music is bludgeoningly energetic, raw and brutal, but also technical, exacting and intimidatingly consistent. A characteristic for the bands sound is David Vincents potent vocals; a combination of a brutal, classic growl and a cleaner, more potent voice. Trey Azagthoth and Pete Sandoval have won several magazine polls for best guitarist and drummer, and they are prominently featured in more “technical” magazines. So anyone who finds the whole genre a bit too hard on the ears, but finds it interesting to watch masters of their craft at work should give Morbid Angel a chance. And for those who like the genre this is a true feast waiting to happen. Be prepared for an onslaught of death metal-classics from the bands first four albums, and maybe even a new song or two. The gig at Sweden Rock Festival will be the bands only show in Sweden this summer Read more under Bands 2011

SCALE THE SUMMIT formed in 2005 while attending the Musicians’ Institute in Los Angeles. The band relocated to Texas in 2006, where they recorded their first, self-released album. After signing with Prosthetic, they released “Carving Desert Canyons”, which Revolver called, “a cinematic blast of intricately melodic fretwork and pummeling percussion,” in 2009.
The band, who received praise from Guitar World for their “tightly-woven guitar interplay, irregular time signatures and tasteful licks,” has toured with the likes of PROTEST THE HERO, BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME, CYNIC, THE DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT and were handpicked by DREAM THEATER to participate in the 2009 installment of their famed “Progressive Nation” festival tour. SCALE THE SUMMIT has also been featured prominently in Guitar Player magazine, and has tracks available for the Rock Band video game through the Rock Band Network.
Technical death metal act, NEURAXIS, have posted exclusive behind the scenes footage of drummer Oli Beaudoin laying down tracks for their new album, “Asylon,” at SickDrummerMagazine.com Check it out now: http://ht.ly/3JlpH “Asylon,” will be released in North America on February 15th, 2011. You can hear the track, “Asylum,” at Prosthetic Records’ webstore, where the official pre-order is now running. http://store.prostheticrecords.com/index.php/sales-preorders/preorders.
Guitarist Rob Milley commented; “Recording the drum tracks for ‘Asylon’ was the smoothest experience Neuraxis has ever had. The vibe at Wild studio was breath taking. Oli tracked his parts in three days. He was on fire! His drum parts are really vicious and he’s elevated the intensity to new levels on the new album.”
“Asylon” was recorded at Wildsound Studio with producer Chris Donaldson (Cryptopsy, The Last Felony, The Agonist). The cover art was created by artist Dennis Sibeijn of Damnengine Artwork, who worked with the band on their previous album, “The Thin Line Between,” as well with Job For A Cowboy, Chimaira and more. The track listing is:
3. Savior and Destroyer
4. By The Flesh
10. Left To Devour

The technical death metal outfit was founded in 1994 and has done time on the road with bands such as Cannibal Corpse, Despised Icon, The Faceless and took part in the 2008 Canadian Summer Slaughter Tour, with Necrophagist, Dying Fetus, Beneath the Massacre and more.
Meliah Rage has announced that singer Paul Souza has returned to record a new full length CD as well as the band’s first ever cover song, a version of Alice Cooper’s Halo of Flies. The song will be a bonus track on the soon to be re-released remix of 2004’s “Barley Human.” The band will then begin recording its next record with Souza in February and March, slated to be called Dead to the World.
The band’s original singer Mike Munro has become very dedicated to his church and recently spent time volunteering in Haiti—Munro felt these and other missions of goodwill would not allow him the flexibility of schedule to tour with Meliah Rage.
Souza recorded two records with Meliah Rage—Barely Human as well as 2006’s The Deep and Dreamless Sleep. The remix will officially be called Barely Human Remix. “We feel very fortunate that we have the ability to work with Paul, complete this CD and play some shows,” explained Meliah Rage founder Anthony Nichols. Souza was the singer when the band toured with Metal Church across the U.S. in 2007.
A video for Halo of Flies was shot last month and will be released in mid February. Dead to the World is slated for release in July just before the band heads for Germany to play The Headbangers Open Air Festival. The track list for the new record is:
Formed in Sweden in 1990, UNCANNY released two demos (1991’s Transportation to the Uncanny and 1992’s Nyktalgia), a split release in 1993 with ANCIENT RITES and one full-length in 1994 titled Splenium For Nyktophobia. For the first time ever, all one and a half hours of classic-era Swedish death metal will be released together on one double-disc package by Dark Descent Records.
Like the limited run 3LP Uncanny box set released by The Crypt in 2010, this 2CD will be titled MCMXCI – MCMXCIV and feature original artwork from Splenium For Nyktophobia as well as artwork from the demo era.
MCMXCI – MCMXCIV is currently slated for a February 2011 release.
Ken Englund – Drums (Centinex, Interment (Swe), Moondark, Dellamorte)
Mats Forsell – Guitar (Fulmination)
Christoffer Harborg – Bass (S.G.R.)
Fredrik Norrman – Guitar (Katatonia (Swe), October Tide, Fulmination)

“The unrelenting visionary allows this particular album to glimpse back at the past. The result is an imposing symbiosis of traditional and modern elements taken from the Swedes’ characteristic sound cosmos. Folk metal anthems meet icy black metal passages and Nordic melodies. The mix delivers multifaceted and memorable songs that carry the mastermind’s unique signature.
The album is completely sung in Swedish and its lyrics borrow from Vintersorg’s past themes: Revolving around man and nature, unique phenomena in the wild, and philosophical observations. Vintersorg’s unmistakable and powerful vocals — from clean to extreme — reign over each track with resounding force, while his production prowess gives the songs a crystal-clear and potent sound. Jordpuls impressively combines tradition with modernism, while showcasing the best of the Swedish visionary.”
Guitarist Mark ‘M.E.’ Edwards of Overlorde has been added as the opening act for the Friday, January 28th, 2011 show at Dingbatz featuring headliners ZO2. M.E. will be performing his instrumental “One Man show” and joining M.E. onstage for a few vocal tunes will be Paul LaPlaca (Chris Caffery, October Thorns, Zandelle). Paul is good friends with ZO2, who are coming off of great shows at the Whisky in L.A. and the ROCK ASYLUM at the Canal Room in Manhattan. So it promises to be a special evening.
M.E. performs at 9:00pm, followed by PYRAMADA and MAXIMUM AMERICA, with ZO2 headlining and ending evening.
