Cyprus isn’t maybe that well known for its metal bands, however, here is an interview with the excellent act Winters Verge that come from Cyprus. I hooked up with the lead singer of Winter’s Verge George Charalambous to talk about their amazing second album TALES OF TRAGEDY, the past, the present, and the future of the band. The band has recently been out on tour with Stratovarius on the first leg of their European tour. This band is one of the new up and coming stars within the heavy metal scene. So remember where you read about Winters Verge first.  :)

Grenouer – Singer Andrey ‘Ind’ and guitarist Alexander ‘Motor’

Grenouer

Singer Andrey “Ind” and  Guitarist Alexander “Motor”

 Grenouer 1_1.jpg

Grenouer is a Russian act that’s fairly unknown to the western world. When I heard their latest album LIFELONG DAYS I was stunned by their amazing way of playing their industrial/death metal. The band started out playing thrash metal at the beginning of the 90′s so it’s hard to put Grenouer into just one musical label. Listen and you will find out what I’m talking about. However, I felt obligated to share Grenouer’s amazing music with the rest of the world because these guys deserve recognition. I think you can all agree that it’s fun to hear from a band from an “exotic” land as Russia. Here is what me, singer Andrey “Ind” and Alexander “Motor” the guitarist talked about.

The Gramercy Theater – New York, NY

Finntroll / Moonsorrow

Having spent the previous evening being enchanted and thoroughly worn out by none other than Opeth, I wondered if I would have enough energy for Finntroll, who ranks very high amongst my all-time favorite bands. There’s something about the marvelously bizarre Trollish shtick and polka melodies of these Finnish madmen that I find unreasonably captivating. I’ve been hooked since their second album of bouncy priest-devouring tunes, JAKTENS TID, and their newest effort NIFELVIND overwhelmed me with their most creative, heaviest music to date. But before Finntroll could take the stage, three bands I was unfamiliar with had sets to perform.

OPETH: Terminal 5 – New York, NY / April 7, 2010

OPETH – Evolution XX

Words and pictures by Kyle Moore, the Metal Magnus & Sara Roggensack

Terminal 5 – New York, NY

April 7th, 2010

There’s the entire world of heavy metal in all its genres, evolutions, and extensive devolutions…and then there’s Opeth. The one band in all the world that embodies the essence of extreme metal while simultaneously eclipsing all confines of genre. Upon my first hearing of Opeth, I remarked “how can something so ugly be so beautiful at the same time?” Even outside their native realm of death metal, they have no peers or equals. The weakest album they ever released still stands leagues beyond the efforts of most, and no album of theirs can be called anything short of amazing. I shamelessly admit that Opeth is my favorite band, and that frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt is my personal musical idol, so my excitement was beyond containment when I learned they were performing a special 20th anniversary concert in my backyard. I’ve seen them in concert six times already, but I already knew this would be something beyond an ordinary show. In a statement, Opeth said that they would perform their breakthrough album BLACKWATER PARK in its entirety, followed by a second (yes, a second set!) digging deep into their back catalogue.

Helsinki Finland

The Finnish underground gig organization KRK has arranged a number of awesome gigs and festival events during the past few years. They managed to get the legendary Canadian black metal maniacs Blasphemy to Finland last autumn. Besides these big ones, there have been a plenty of smaller underground gigs arranged by the same organization. For example the second visit of the mighty Dutch death metal legends Asphyx to Finland was arranged by KRK. Asphyx made a debut visit last summer at the Jalometalli festival, which was a tremendous experience of the old school death metal given by Asphyx. Therefore a second visit was definitely welcomed for sure.

PRIMAL FEAR – Mat Sinner and Ralf Scheepers

PRIMAL FEAR

Interview with Mat Sinner and Ralf Scheepers

Interviewed by EvilG

Live photos by Steve Sanders / Promo photos courtesy of Frontiers Records

For many years now, one of my favorite bands is Primal Fear. I finally found the time to squeeze in a long overdue interview with bassist Mat and vocalist Ralf on the eve of the band’s return to North America where they will be playing a number of shows throughout the USA and Canada in May/June (2010).  Most of the discussion is about their newest album, the upcoming tour, and the latest news from both Ralf and Mat.

MICHAEL MONROE: Live at Club Tavastia, HELSINKI

MICHAEL MONROE

Club Tavastia, HELSINKI

1′st of APRIL 2010

REVIEW AND PICTURES BY MARKO SYRJÄLÄ

It’s been about ten years since Michael Monroe last played a solo show in Helsinki.  That’s of course because of Hanoi Rocks rebirth which started in 2001. Hanoi Rocks released three successful studio albums before they decided to disband again in 2009 after a series of sold out shows in Club Tavastia. Unlike his former colleague Andy McCoy, who announced his very short live Real McCoy project almost right away, Michael decided to take to some time before getting  back in action.  In January of 2010 Michael announced his new all star band which included: Ginger from The Wildhearts, former Hanoi Rocks / Demolition 23 bassist Sam Yaffa, guitarist Todd Youth and another former Demolition 23 member Jimmy Clarke. This new band first did a handful of successful shows in the USA before heading back in Europe. They arrived in Finland in late March to play six shows with the renewed line up including New York Dolls guitarist Steve Conte and and drummer Karl Rosenfist.
