SLAYER’S JEFF HANNEMAN MAKES TRIUMPHANT RETURN AT THE BIG 4

April 25th, 2011
by EvilG

LOS ANGELES, CA – April 25, 2011 — Founding Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman stepped onstage with his band at this past Saturday’s Big 4 concert in Indio, CA, marking the first time he has played with Slayer since last October.  In January, Hanneman contracted necrotizing fasciitis, likely caused by a spider bite, and has been undergoing surgeries, skin grafts and intense rehab since.  Hanneman surprised the crowd of 50,000 when he walked out onto the stage, unannounced, and played the two-song encore, “South of Heaven” and “Angel of Death.”

Backstage in Slayer’s dressing room afterwards, Hanneman relaxed on a couch and said, “I’m the happiest man in the world.”

Gary Holt, guitarist for Exodus, has been the primary guest guitarist with Slayer since the band started its 2011 touring schedule in February, and will continue in that capacity until Hanneman has completely recovered.

Remembering the Man on the Silver Mountain, Ronnie James Dio
(Ronald James Padavona (July 10, 1942 – May 16, 2010)

In the many years that I’ve run Metal-Rules.com, I consider myself lucky to have interviewed Ronnie James Dio just once. It was a phone interview and as these things go, usually a label/PR type will call and put you on hold until the artist is ready. Therefore, when I answered my home phone expecting as much, I get a “Hello Geoff, this is Ronnie James Dio”. Being taken so aback, my reaction was not as professional as usual as I admit to doing a little fawning over him. For me, this seemingly simple, yet personal touch left an impression on me. He was very polite and professional and while this was “business as usual” for him, it was anything but for me.

Since the early 80’s when I first got into heavy metal, Ronnie James Dio was there and a part of my musical landscape. The first time I heard him was the song “Holy Diver” with the video airing on Canada’s Much Music’s Power Hour. It is to that album (Holy Diver) that my mind always goes to when I think of Dio. The song has been in my mind and played both on my stereo and on my guitar for many years. After discovering Dio, I also got heavily into his Rainbow material and of course his albums with Black Sabbath. When he rejoined Sabbath in the band “Heaven and Hell”, I was hoping for a few more albums and tours. But sadly, as we all know, this reunion with the Sabs was cut short in May 2010.

Shortly after Ronnie’s passing, Robert “Stormhammer” Williams of Metal Rules proposed that in one year we should pay tribute to Ronnie by presenting comments and quotes from artists that worked with him, those that knew him, and those that were influenced by his powerful, huge, and unforgettable voice. Of course I gave my blessing as no metal icon is as deserving of such a tribute.

So here are the interviews clips (video/text) from everyone that we could get in contact with over the past year. Long live heavy metal and long live Ronnie James Dio! \,,/

April 25th, 2011
by EvilG

WOLVSERPENT, the blackened brainchild of longtime collaborators Blake Green and Brittany McConnell, have announced that they will once again be hitting the road in support of their avant-garde masterpiece, Blood Seed. The sprawling compositions contained therein gracefully wend their way through the valleys of death, drone, black metal, doom, and chamber music and arrive triumphantly on foreign shores. Borne of the duo’s 20+ years of classical training and deep appreciation for the works of composers like Arvo Part, Gyoygy Ligeti,  and Ennio Morricone, WOLVSERPENT‘s vision combines stringed amplified instruments with a 21st century approach to composition to create works that are dark, emotional, menacing, cinematic, atmospheric, and heartbreakingly beautiful.

(Check out Brooklyn Vegan’s glowing review of their last NYC performance here: http://www.brooklynvegan.com/archives/2010/10/wolverspent_pla.html#more)

According to Bruce Fessier from Mydesert.com, the promoter of yesterday’s Big Four concert was expecting the first U.S. appearance together of the world’s four most popular thrash metal bands to sell out before doors open at 2 p.m. at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, CA.

But Paul Tollett of the Los Angeles-based Goldenvoice company said the one-day show won’t attract as many people as last week’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, or next weekend’s Stagecoach country music festival.

Crimson Glory statement regarding the passing of Matt LAporte

April 23rd, 2011
by EvilG

Florida metalers Crimson Glory have released the following statements on the rec…ent passing of guitarist and friend, Matt La Porte:

“We were all deeply saddened to learn of Matt’s untimely departure from this realm. He left indelible marks on the lives of the people who knew him, both as a highly accomplished musician and a true friend. He was a great teacher and an eager friend, and always wanted to help with the band in any way. He truly dedicated himself to the people and the music he was passionate about, and he always added a unique element of comedic revelry, coupled with a certain melancholy depth that can only come from someone who has loved and lost in the ways that Matt La Porte has. He stuck to his guns and he stuck by his friends, and he will be very sorely missed by all of us.”

TODD LA TORRE:
“Matt was my dear friend, as well as my introduction to Crimson Glory.” “I’m so glad to have collaborated on other musical projects with him. If it weren’t for him, a lot of people wouldn’t be in the bands they’re in: Circle II Circle, Jon Oliva’s Pain, and of course my involvement with Crimson Glory. He’s the one who introduced Crimson Glory’s music me, and this whole thing that I’m inolved in is because of Matt. I’m so thankful to have had him in my life.”

JON DRENNING:
“I am deeply saddened by the loss of my good friend. He was a beautiful, passionate, generous, witty human being, and an ultra-talented guitarist. I was always impressed with his guitar skills, but even more impressed by how generous and nice he was to all his friends and fans around him.

We became good friends after the passing of Midnight, and having him perform with us at Prog Power X for Midnight’s benefit was very special. He always said that he felt so honored to have had the opportunity to be Midnight’s friend and to write music with him, and we shared those same sentiments. He shared with me about how amazing it was to just hear these incredible, creative ideas and songs coming out of Midnight, and he helped him turn them from ideas into tangible recordings that we otherwise might not have ever heard. Indeed, he truly revered and loved Midnight and his body of work with Crimson Glory, and it was only natural that he was able to help us find Todd La Torre: the new voice and the personality to fill Midnight’s shoes and get CG back on track.

Matt gifted us with many priceless things, from his friendship and commitment to our endeavors, to Midnight’s recordings, to the introduction of Todd La Torre. I remember how excited he was about Todd, and he had every right to be.

Matt had a keen ear for talent and was a spectacular guitarist as well, and I was always humbled by how much he admired my songwriting and guitar playing with Crimson Glory; he always made me feel so much more special than I ever thought I was. I think he had that effect on everybody who knew him.

It’s very difficult to start our 25th Anniversary tour on the heels of such sorrowful news, but I find solace knowing he is at peace transcending the electric skies with his dear friend, Midnight. I can still see his big, bright, beautiful sky-blue eyes sparkling with stars, and I will always remember him that way…”

BEN JACKSON:
“I am so saddened by the news last night of the passing of my good friend and much admired musician/guitarist Matt Laporte… He was the brilliant guitar player of Jon Oliva’s Pain, Circle II Circle, numerous other bands and honorary third guitarist of Crimson Glory when we played live for Midnight’s memorial concert at prog power. We all loved and admired Matt and were happy to have his presence in our band to help us through a hard time. Matt introduced us to our new singer, Todd La Torre, helping to make a bright new beginning possible for Crimson Glory. His presence will remain with us forever, along with all his friends and fans he left behind. R.I.P. Matt Laporte Your friend, Ben Jackson”

JEFF LORDS:
“Matt was a great technical player, yet his delivery was one of great feeling. Off stage, his quirky, dry sense of humor had me in stitches. I’m going to miss that guy. RIP, Matt.”

DANA BURNELL:
“My heart is heavy for the loss of my friend Matt La Porte. He was an incredible guitarist and a wonderful human being! I will miss him.
Rock in Peace Matt!!”
