REVIEW AND PICS BY MARKO SYRJÄLÄ AND ARTO LEHTINEN
As everyone who was there still recalls, last year’s Tuska wasn’t a highlight experience when it comes to bands. This was surprising as there were some killer names on the bill such as Suicidal Tendencies, Pestilence, My Dying Bride. Obviously, last year was some kind of intermission for booking bands to pull more people. Thankfully, this year’s Tuska event was completely different. The line-up definitely looked more than awesome. The legendary Megadeth headlined Sunday, Nevermore on Saturday and above all the Canadian guitarist, wizard, and music genius, Devin Townsend. Japanese j-rock groups were not seen at Tuska. Instead the death metal bands ruled such as Obituary, Nile and of course domestic bands such as Sotajumala ja Torture Killer. The festival was an utter success. The whole weekend was totally packed….and above all Megadeth crowned the whole three day metal inferno.
Sad but true, Tuska will not be held in the heart of Helsinki in the upcoming years. The park of Kaisaniemi will be a construction zone as the whole area will be improved to be better and more enjoyable. However, it is going to be interesting to see how the new area will work for metal bands. At least the upcoming area has proven itself to be a good festival area as there have been a couple of festivals and gigs arranged there so far. This is a farewell to the Kaisaniemi park and the current Tuska formation.
Astoria, New York – September 3, 2010 – New York City indie metal band Flaming Tusk announced yesterday via their website, http://www.flamingtusk.com, that founding guitarist Don Blood has left the band and been replaced by Bernard Gann of fellow NYC metal scene stalwarts Liturgy. Gann remains a member of Liturgy and will divide his time between the two groups.
Liturgy kicks off a European tour on September 4th in Denmark, and Flaming Tusk will resume writing new material and performing to support their current LP “Old, Blackened Century” shortly after Gann’s return from that tour.
Flaming Tusk was founded in 2008 by drummer Dumnorix Xristophage and guitarist Don Blood who were immediately joined by guitarist Zosimus, bassist Schneidaar and vocalist Stolas Trephinator. This lineup recorded a self-produced EP, “Abigail”, and a full length album, “Old, Blackened Century”, both on the independent High Water Media label. Blood’s departure and Gann’s arrival marks the first personnel change for the band.
ENCOFFINATION signs with Selfmadegod Records! Debut album “Ritual Ascension Beyond Flesh” out this October! 2 songs available for streaming!
From the darkest abyss comes U.S. death metal/doom band ENCOFFINATION, whose album entitled “Ritual Ascension Beyond Flesh”will be released on CD on 17th October by Selfmadegod Records.
Formed in 2009, ENCOFFINATION is the sepulchral embodiment of rancid death. Crushing, suffocating death metal doom of the lowest caliber. Named for the ritual preparation of the dead for burial, ENCOFFINATION exists below the plane of mortality; deep within the realms of death and decay. Slowly they lurch forth with their educated form of blasphemy, occult, and ritualistic expulsion of the holy from the earth.
This is the first full length from this amazing two-piece band, which is comprised of Ghoat on vocals, guitar, and bass (also in Festered) and Elektrokutioner on drums (also in Decrepitaph, Festered, Tombstones, Beyond Hell, Scaremaker). The follow-up to their After Their Temples Descend Below The Earth 7-inch, released earlier this year, this Georgia/Texas-based duo attacks with the 8-song Ritual Ascension Beyond Flesh, featuring over 30 minutes of cryptic metal influenced by early ‘90s American doom/death and bands like Incantation, Disembowelment, and Morpheus Descends. The album has already been released on tape format by Ritval Death Offerings, and the vinyl version is available on Psychedelic Lotus Order. Now it’s time for the CD version!
Prepare for the most soul draining and graven death metal album of the year this October! You can already check two songs from this unearthly debut at band’s Myspace – www.myspace.com/encoffination

The band and crew are all here in Tampa rehearsing for the tour – Visas have been cleared and the guys are in good spirits and ready to party with all of you. However, during rehearsals, Roy became severely ill. Due to this, as yet undiagnosed, illness, Roy reluctantly has been forced to head back home to Norway. He is currently under his physician’s care, but unfortunately these circumstances will prevent him from joining us on the North American concert tour. Of course, we want Roy to take care of his health as priority one for now and the future. After much consideration on how to proceed, we all in Kamelot feel strongly about keeping our commitment to our fans, promoters, and support bands on this tour! We are all ready and excited about playing these shows, we have flown in people from around the world to be apart of it and it has been in the works over a year! Therefore, we are working diligently with a fantastic singer willing to step in in the eleventh hour in order
to make this tour a reality – our good friend Michael Erikson from Circus Maximus (Norway) has agreed to fill in for Roy! And we are excited to announce a special guest: Swedish vocalist Elize Ryd from Amaranthe will be joining the band on the North American Tour. She will also be part of the VIP meet and greet! Elize toured with us on our Summer Pandemonium Tour and also the European tour earlier this Spring. Also as a special thank you to our North American fans, our friends at ESP guitars have donated a beautiful ESP guitar which will be signed by Thomas Youngblood and given away at the end of our North American tour – this contest is open only to North American tour concert goers. Fans can enter for a chance to win this exclusive item by signing up in the designated area at each show! More surprises are in store at many shows including special guest appearances and more.”
Roy especially would like to add,
“I am terribly sorry that I cannot do this upcoming tour in North-America this fall. We have our most fantastic album ever coming out in September, and the timing could have been better I guess. The band has my full and unconditional blessing to go out there and kick ass regardless, and I feel we have found a good replacement in Michael. He is a very good singer and long time friend. Be good to him! Hope to see you soon!” All the best from Roy Khan.
“Roy and I go way back , so when he called and asked me to help him and the rest of Kamelot to do their long planned USA tour , I told him ” Sure bro , I am there for you ”
It will be big shoes to fill , but in his honor I will do my best to give the Kamelot fans a show they have long awaited . So grab your earplugs and come join the party !” states vocalist Michael Eriksen
We cannot thank you enough for your tremendous support over the years, and look forward to being out to meet more of you on the road! Please join us in wishing Roy a speedy recovery, and swift return to us!”

The Greek melodic metal phenomenon FIREWIND, led by the young guitar sensation Gus G. has returned with the scathing new studio album effort Days of Defiance, which is easily their defining musical moment. The much anticipated disc is set for an October 25th release in Europe, as well as an October 26th release in North America. Days of Defiance is a truly ambitious and dynamic opus featuring some of the most brilliant guitar playing the genre has seen in many years.
A special iTunes edition for Days of Defiance will feature the exclusive new track, “Riding On The Wind.”
FIREWIND’s guitarist and songwriter Gus G., currently on tour with Ozzy Osbourne in Europe, checks in with the following comment about the album and its artwork: “I’m very excited and cannot wait for our fans to listen to our new album! We feel we’ve captured great performances and took our songwriting to the next level on this one. There’s tons of cool guitar on there and I believe Bob has finally managed to reach warp-speed with his keyboard solos! Even more seriously, I highly recommend that you listen to this album at a very loud volume. “As for the artwork, it was once again done by our visual wizard and webmaster extraordinaire, Gustavo Sazes. This time we asked Gustavo to come up with a great landscape scenery, with a more traditional approach and even get the “pencil” style of artwork on there, but also combine it with more modern stuff. So, he gave us that…with a slight futuristic, sci-fi element and I think the end result is stunning!”

British thrashers EVILE have revealed that they are currently hard at work writing for a brand new studio album.
EVILE, who recently won a coveted Metal Hammer Golden Gods award, are writing the follow-up to their critically acclaimed 2009 album, INFECTED NATIONS. The band announce that they will once again be working with producer RUSS RUSSELL.
EVILE lead guitarist OL DRAKE comments:
“We’re well on our way into writing the material for Evile’s third album now. We’ve been playing around with the odd part and riffs since ‘Infected Nations’ came out in 2009. I have about ten song ideas which are being built on daily, but not going to stop there. We’re not going to limit ourselves this time to a certain number of songs. We’re just going to write until it’s time to give up and go into pre-production. We’ve been sending tracks/recordings/ideas back and forth between ourselves, Russ Russell and our management (Wiseblood) and there’s an excellent vibe going.
“I don’t want this to be a typical ‘new album’ update using the same descriptions and words most bands use to big up an album, so I’ll just say the new stuff is really getting my blood boiling and my heart racing. We’ve been through a lot over the past year, and it’s being naturally reflected in the music which is coming out. I’ve never been as passionate as I am now about writing the best material we can. With Joel in the mix, and him being a die-hard thrash fan since the ’80s, I’m looking forward to see how this will turn out. Keep an eye on our website for more details, and come catch us on one of the 77 shows in September-December in North America! (If you don’t see me I’ll be busy riffing for the benefit of your ears.)” Read the rest of this entry »
As previously announced Metal Mind Productions will release “War Machine” – a brand new studio album of the legendary British band Tank.
Tank – featuring Mick Tucker and Cliff Evans on guitar alongside ex-Rainbow/Yngwie Malmsteen frontman Doogie White, ex-Bruce Dickinson bassist Chris Dale and ex-Zodiac Mindwarp drummer Dave ‘Grav’ Cavill – are back in action and ready to establish themselves once more as one of Britain’s finest rock bands. The band’s seventh studio album will be released in October and as the band claims: “we think it’s going to be our best album so far”.
Front cover illustration of “War Machine” was done by Jens Reinhold / zenz-art.com

Due to the changed line-up, “War Machine” will combine all the influences and experience of individual band members. Cliff Evans: “We intend to make this a classic British rock/metal album that every fan should have in their collection”.
“War Machine” will be released in 4 different versions: as a jewel case CD, a limited edition digipak CD including 2 bonus tracks and LP with one bonus track. Japanese edition of the album will include two exclusive bonus tracks which won’t be available elsewhere.

Hollow is easily one of the most underrated bands in the history of progressive power metal. Their two stunning albums – “Modern Cathedral” and “Architect of the Mind” – never received the attention they deserved, despite stellar reviews in the music press. Metal Mind Productions presents the exclusive double reissue which brings back true classics from the past, filled with music that brings “power” back to “power metal”…
The history of the band began in the early 1990’s in the university town of Umeå, Sweden. There guitarist/vocalist Andreas Stoltz teamed up with Marcus Bigren (guitar), Thomas Nilsson (bass) and Urban Vikstrom (drums) to form a unique power metal group, which they called Vaalkyrian. The name was eventually changed to Hollow and in 1995 the band released a demo called ‘Speak To Me”, which contained six tracks. This was followed in 1997 by a self-titled EP with 4 tracks, which caught the attention of MM Records – a small, independent label. This way, by the end of the year Hollow managed to release their debut LP – “Modern Cathedral”. In 1998 the album got re-issued with a new cover by Nuclear Blast.
“Modern Cathedral” was an amazing collection of progressive power metal tracks strongly influenced by such acts as Queensryche, Crimson Glory or Elegy. With their debut release Hollow have proven that the genre holds no secrets for them. Crafty compositions (like the doom-infected “In Your Arms” or the brilliant power ballad “Lies”), phenomenal guitarwork and Andreas Stoltz’s impressive vocals all made up for a truly extraordinary LP. Hollow returned in 1999 with their sophomore offering – “Architect of the Mind”. This time the music was even heavier and more powerful than on “Modern Cathedral”. With such brilliant tracks as “Rain”, “Father” or the ultra-fast “Shadow God” the group once again showcased their incredible skills. Even Stoltz’s singing got better – his vocals in mid and high register were equally mind-blowing. The album received a very warm reception in the music press and Hollow were considered a breath of fresh air on the power metal scene. Unfortunately, due to several circumstances the band ceased to exist not long after the release of “Architect of the Mind”… As of 1999, Hollow remains a solo project governed solely by Andreas Stoltz. He occasionally posts new tracks on his MySpace page, the latest being called “Descending” – a song written in memory of Crimson Glory’s late vocalist Midnight who departed in July, 2009.
This exclusive double re-release of “Modern Cathedral” and “Architect of the Mind” holds two extraordinary musical gems that after all these years shine with the same overwhelming intensity. Both albums are absolutely essential for fans of progressive power metal, delivering all the best this genre has to offer. The new digipak edition is limited to 2000 copies. Remastered using tube technology, digitally edited on a golden disc. Metal Mind Productions set the release date for 11th October in Europe and 7th December in USA (via MVD).
