In his 2013 New Year’s Address recently posted on the band’s website, BLIND GUARDIAN frontman Hansi Kürsch offers an update on: a) the long-promised orchestral album, and b) the new studio album. Some excerpts:
“…[T]hroughout the last 18 months we have recorded 7 songs in Prague. There probably is a handful of additional songs to record during this year, but they are also already finalized with regard to composition. In theory we do not need any further songs for this album but ideas simply seem to flow endlessly… The reason why this album is still far from being released is partly based on the regular album, which we definitely would like to release first. At this point in time I am in a very tricky situation. How to continue from here? I think it is probably easiest to simply continue by telling you something about the regular album since this would be next anyway. Keep in mind that ‘next’ is relative!
“…[W]e have started working on four songs and already were able to finish two songs musically. The working titles are ‘Encrypted Time’ (I think this title is inspired by André’s passion for World of Warcraft or so – I can only guess…) and ‘The Ocean’ (here, André has been inspired by my undefined mumbling in the song). ‘Encrypted Time’ is a modern speed metal song with some tribal aspects and some ‘70s inspirations, while ‘The Ocean’ is a very progressive (this time I talk about ELP meets Savatage art rock when I say progressive) orchestra dominated song which will give you a further glimpse of what to expect from the orchestral album. I am clueless about the right story board for ‘Encrypted Time’ but ‘The Ocean’ could be used as a theme opener for the orchestral project. We will see… The other four songs seem to turn out very special and obviously very different. Working titles: ‘The Irish Hill,’ ‘Prophecies,’ ‘Soundtrack 2,’ and ‘Midtempo Song.’ I cannot tell you exactly about how many times we have had a song over the years which was first called ‘Midtempo Song.’ I am pretty sure we are not the only band abusing this spectacular title over and over again. Thank God, the title is not copyright protected, yet. We would be in trouble then. Maybe it is and that’s the reason why it barely ever ended up as a title on the album.”
Greatly inspired by life experience, world myths, and legends, BLIND GUARDIAN was founded in 1984 in Krefeld, Germany. Known for combining majestic orchestral sequences with quieter, Renaissance-styled acoustic arrangements, the merits of the band’s emotion-packed music quickly spread via word-of-mouth and laid the foundation for a very rabid fan base that has continued to support the band throughout their career.
In 2010, BLIND GUARDIAN’s tenth studio album, At The Edge Of Time, attained the highest first-week sales numbers in the United States in the history of the band’s existence and secured the #1 position on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. It also debuted at #108 on the Billboard Top 200 chart. In Canada, At The Edge Of Time debuted at #18 on the Top Hard Music Albums chart and #108 on the Top 200 chart according to Nielsen Canadian Soundscan.

Today Norwegian black ‘n’ roll legion VREID release new single “The Way Of The Serpent” from their forthcoming new full-length, Welcome Farewell. Cold and compelling, the follow-up to 2011’s Norwegian Grammy-nominated album V, which Decibel Magazinecalled, “…VREID’s finest hour,” was recorded at bassist Hváll’s own Studio 1184 and is set for North American release via Indie RecordingsMarch 5, 2013.
Described by Metal Hammer UK as a “unique time-travel in metal,” commending their merge of ‘70s rock, ‘80s classic metal and Norwegian black metal, with the eight-track Welcome FarewellVREID again add a new twist to their already difficult-to-pinpoint sound. Comments Hváll of the new material, “It’s been a lot of work, but we are utterly pleased with the result. ‘Dark,’ ‘heavy’ and ‘VREID’ are the three keywords to describe it.”
Feast your ears on “The Way Of The Serpent” at THIS LOCATION.
And if you missed it, sample “The Reap” courtesy of the metal tyrants at Terrorizer HERE!
Welcome Farewell Track Listing:
1. The Ramble
2. The Way Of The Serpent
3. The Devil’s Hand
4. Welcome Farewell
5. The Reap
6. Sights of Old
7. Black Waves
8. At The Brook
VREID formed in 2004 following the demise of ‘’Sognametal” legends Windir. Some described their music as a fusion of Windir’s ambiance, the rawness of Norwegian black metal and the molten groove of Sepultura, Metallica and Motörhead blended with historically inspired lyrics. Their third and fourth offerings, I Krig and Milorg, were both concept albums based around the liberation work in Norway during World War II. Liberation was also the keyword on V, but put in a broader historical/philosophic perspective. The lyrics on Welcome Farewell describe a lifecycle through a series of short stories, seen from an existential point of view and, inspired by Hváll’s own local community with its nature, architecture and historical artists such as Arne Garborg and Otto Valstad, are more personal than ever before.
Tampa, Florida’s The Absence has announced that guitarist Per Nilsson of Scar Symmetry has joined forces with the group. The band has already begun tracking for their new EP with James Murphy and will release a single from these efforts soon; keep your eyes peeled!
According to Per:
“Six years ago the guys asked me to do a guest solo for the “Riders” album and we’ve been friends ever since. I’ve followed their career as a fan and when they reached out asking me to join the band, it was a no-brainer. I am super excited to be a part of The Absence family; we’ve been jamming out some new tunes and I feel like we’ve got some killer stuff in the works for ya! Between Patrick and me, there’s gonna be some INSANE guitar shreddin’ on the new tunes!”
- Per Nilsson
The band has this to say:
“We are super excited to have Per a part of the family. Look forward to great things!”
- Jamie Stewart
“Beyond siked to play with such a great friend”
- Jeramie Kling
“With Per now a part of The Absence… Boundaries are non-existent”
- Patrick Pintavalle
“Per is one of my favorite dudes in the world; I couldn’t be more exited to have him in the band!” – Michael Leon

17, 18, 19, 19. No that’s not today’s winning lottery numbers, it’s the age of the band members of Finland’s most promising new contemporary thrash combo. Founded in early 2010 in Jyväskylä by thrash/speed metal enthusiast Samy Elbanna, the front man gathered an ensemble of passionate allies around him to establish a band that soon would become known as the most energetic up-and-comers Scandinavia had seen in years – LOST SOCIETY!
Attributes in music are known to be cyclical. Every few years, a band comes along who borrows just enough from the revered past to bring a new infusion of vitality to the musical present. SCORPION CHILD‘s sound invokes a time when guitar-driven rock ruled radio’s airwaves, when being hypnotized by a frontman and his bandmates in a concert arena was one of life’s ultimate main events. A five-piece from Austin, Texas,SCORPION CHILD have spent the last few years perfecting both their songwriting and stage show. Guitarists Chris Cowart and David Finner deliver their finessed twin guitar attack with experience older than their years; bassist Shaun Avants and drummer Shawn Alvear are steadfast sentinels of their driving rhythm section; and lead singer Aryn Jonathan Black fronts the psychedelic rock cavalry with a passion & voice reminiscent of the early eras of Robert Plant and Ronnie James Dio.
“I’ve always wanted to hear new musical ingredients within a classic heavy sound,” states vocalist AJB. “It’s great to witness captivating performances where both the live show and the band’s recorded material can complement one another. The heavy-prog sounds of Uriah Heep, Hairy Chapter, and the epic delivery of early Rainbow showcases these crossovers brilliantly and gave us all honest – yet relentless – sonics to aspire to. That’s why it’s important for us as a band to maintain spontaneity while putting a special emphasis into integral hooks.”
This May, Nuclear Blast Entertainment will release SCORPION CHILD‘s self-titled, full-length debut. Produced and arranged by Chris “Frenchie” Smith (The Answer, Jet, And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, The Toadies, Dax Riggs), the album uses analog recording technology to organically capture a hybrid of nine, hook-filled chapters of heavy psych rock. The goal? To breathe new life into a neglected yet still important musical heritage.
Dangerous guitar riffs, soul-ridden bass lines, and thunderous drums with powerful rock vocals as lead conductor convey the on-stage swagger of SCORPION CHILD and will prepare you for the live experience awaiting you when the band tours the U.S. and Europe throughout 2013.

Scorpion Child track listing is:
1. Kings Highway
2. Polygon Of Eyes

5. Liquor
6. Antioch
7. In The Arms Of Ecstasy
8. Lover’s Leap

Canadian progressive metal pioneers VOIVOD have now released their 13th studio album, Target Earth! To hear Target Earth in its entirety, please head over to Loudwire.com for the album stream. To purchase Target Earth, please visit iTunes for a digital copy or CM Distro for the album, plus a special bundle that includes the CD and an exclusive t-shirt.
Recorded at producer Pierre Rémillard’s Wild Studios in Quebec and mixed by Sanford Parker (PELICAN, NACHTMYSTIUM), Target Earth features artwork by drummer Away (Michel Langevin), who used color schemes from each one of the band’s previous albums to make this new masterpiece. The album brings back original bass player, Blacky (Jean Yves Thériault), marking his first recordings with the band since 1991′s Angel Rat. It’s also the first to feature guitarist Chewy (Daniel Mongrain), who cut his teeth playing guitar to the late Piggy’s (Denis D’Amour) riffs, and thus has matched his style to a tee. VOIVOD, as a full group, hadn’t sat down to write a record together since 2003′s self-titled album. The end result harkens back to the group’s late 80s output and after 30 years together as a band, one of their best yet.
VOIVOD lineup
Michel Langevin (Away) – drums
Denis Bélanger (Snake) – vocals
Jean-Yves Thériault (Blacky) – bass
Daniel Mongrain (Chewy) – guitar
Australian melodic metallers LORD have set the Australian release date of their forthcoming album ‘Digital Lies‘ as February 22. Dates for New Zealand and Japan to follow, along with announcements for distribution partners for the rest of the world.
Stated LORD mainman LT:
“Finally! It seems like a lifetime since we started this album until this point, but we’re finally here. For this release, we thought long and hard about other options regarding labels and, frankly, it’s a mess out there. The larger labels are doing everything they can to protect their revenue and are being very cautious about who they deal with, and the smaller labels are at the mercy of a very volatile and changing market, and you can never be sure they’ll be still in business once the time to pay up comes around – we’ve unfortunately had to wear the consequences of that in the past.
We’ve chosen once again to distribute this release via Riot! Entertainment for Australia and New Zealand and Rubicon Music for Japan since we had such a great experience with them for our previous album ‘Set In Stone‘. For the rest of the world, however, we’ve chosen this time to keep as much control over our product as we can by planning to export to stores around the globe and sell directly from our own web store. As I mentioned before, the market is so fickle now, trusting a label to even be there let alone pay up is a risk we just can’t afford to take if we want to keep touring and releasing albums – simple as that.
Pre-sales from our online store begin from Monday, January 28 and the album will be available both as a physical product in Australia from February 22 as well as a digital download which will be available worldwide.
So what does it sound like?
If you know what LORD sounds like… well, that. We’re not reinventing ourselves or the genre at all. We haven’t tried to go off in any new and weird direction. There’s definitely an underlying dark technology vibe throughout the album as a theme, but other than that, it’s the same diverse sound that we’ve had since we were out there as DUNGEON.
But don’t take my word for it, make up your own mind! Here’s samples from the entire album. We hope you like it!”

Trough Overtures’ Facebook and Youtube pages, lead singer Michele Guaitoli – frontman of the Italian heavy/power-metal band – has published the recording sent to Kamelot two years ago as audition to substitute Roy Kahn.
“Something like two years ago Roy Kahn announced his split from Kamelot. As for the most of their fans, I was absolutely shocked and I felt really sad about it: Roy Kahn was (and still is) one of the most important influences for my musical growing. He is one of those singers who, release after release, always gave me strong emotions, without making me care or even think about any technical questions: he simply arrives. Beyond the obvious opportunity, those were the reasons that made me decide to try to submit my audition. I am actually extremely happy that their choice went on Tommy Karevic, an amazing vocalist that I was already following in Seventh Wonder, and I am still a huge fan of Kamelot. Today, in response to some requests I had by mail from some Overtures’ followers, I decided to publish the clip I loaded on Youtube 2 years ago: this link was meant for Kamelot and for a few friends, but seen the situation, I made it public, but I want to say it clear: I look at Kamelot with HUGE respect and admiration, and I absolutely don’t mean anything with this clip: watch it just like you watch any other cover on Youtube!”
Overtures just finished the recordings for their third album “Entering the maze”: more news about it will be released soon.
