* Slayer, Anthrax and Death Angel are all on this bill

For more than three decades, Slayer’s onslaught has proven the band to be the supreme thrash-metal band on the planet, the band that other heavy acts are measured against and aspire to. The two-time Grammy-winners have also accumulated an abundance of certified Gold Albums along with “Best…” awards from media outlets all over the world, including Kerrang!, SPIN, Metal Hammer, Revolver, and Esquire.  Throughout Slayer’s history, the band has never faltered in unleashing its extreme and focused sonic assault, and, unlike many of its contemporaries who “commercialized” their sound, Slayer has remained crushing and brutal, steadfastly refusing to cater to the mainstream.  Slayer’s founding member, guitarist Jeff Hanneman passed in 2013, and Exodus guitarist Gary Holt has been filling in for him since.  Paul Bostaph, who was Slayer’s drummer from ’94 – ’01, has rejoined bassist/vocalist Tom Araya and guitarist Kerry King, and is back behind the kit.

In September 2015, Slayer released Repentless, the band’s 12th studio album, the first without Hanneman and first with producer Terry Date, to widespread rave reviews and the highest chart debut of the band’s career.  The band also teamed up with director BJ McDonnell for two high-concept and brutal music videos for the album’s “Repentless” and then for “You Against You.”

Eric “A.K.” Knutson of Flotsam and Jetsam – Doing it from the Heart!

Eric “A.K.” Knutson of Flotsam and Jetsam – Doing it from the Heart!

Interview by Robert Cavuoto

Flotsam & Jetsam

Flotsam and Jetsam is a band from Phoenix, Arizona with a legacy that goes back well over 30 years. It’s hard to believe that their debut album release, Doomsday for The Deceiver, came out in the summer of 1986. Fast-forward 30 years and several member changes the band is now back and re-energized with Eric “AK” Knutson, Mike Gilbert, Michael Spencer, Steve Conley and Jason Bittner, essentially a new band with a 30-year history.

After their 2015 European tour the band took this new found energy and focused on writing another new CD. What started as 18 rough ideas turned into an album’s worth of killer material. The end result is the self- titled Flotsam and Jetsam CD due out May 20th. It showcases five very distinct personalities and influences coming together for the common goal of creating another soon to be metal classic.

I caught up with vocalist, Eric “A.K.” Knutson, to talk about their latest release, the band’s legacy, and the sacrifices made along the way.

Music for Nations Partners With SIN For Dedicated U.S. Presence

April 27th, 2016
by Celtic Bob

Music For Nations, the legendary British heavy metal label responsible for discovering and releasing records by Metallica, Tool, and Opeth, amongst others, has teamed up with SonyMusic Independent Network (SIN) to become an active front-line label for the first time in more than a decade, and for the first time with a dedicated U.S. presence.

Headed by Julie Weir in the UK and in association with SIN in New York, the label will be signing and releasing new product by new artists while additionally, starting in June 2016 with Opeth and Paradise Lost albums, reissuing and repackaging classic catalog titles.

Ms. Weir’s career has included working with artists including Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir and Bullet for My Valentine; she has also partnered with Sony Music UK in the past on breaking new rock artists including Nothing But Thieves. She also recently played a key role in developing RCA’s Bring Me The Horizon who has achieved phenomenal international success.

SIN, a division of Sony Music International, was launched in 2009 by Adam Pollock and Vinny Rich to serve as a United States incubator for Sony’s international artists. Headquartered in New York City at RED Distribution, who offer distribution, sales and marketing support for the unit, SIN has released thousands of titles over the years including high-profile projects Kate Miller-Heidke, Karnivool, and Zaz, and has “up-streamed” to Sony’s major U.S. labels diverse artists such as Paloma Faith, Kodaline, MØ and, coincidentally although not in conjunction with Ms. Weir, Nothing But Thieves.

UK label manager Joel De’ath exclaims, “We see this as an incredible opportunity for MFN. RED works with some of the most reputable Metal Labels in the world and it’s an honor to be part of this legacy. Having SIN as our ‘men on the street’ in the U.S. ties it all together.” SIN’s Rich concurred, “We hope and expect that the union of MFN, RED, and SIN will breathe new life to this hell-raising music. We’re excited to be a part of a new chapter in MFN’s history.”

Initial MFN U.S. releases will be two classic reissues; Opeth’s triple LP live album, Lamentations, recorded live in 2003 soon after the release of the band’s classic Deliverance and Damnation albums, and Paradise Lost’s genre-defining classic, Shades of God, coming for the first time on picture disc.

As well as the forthcoming physical releases, the Music for Nations catalogue is available on digital and streaming services, including classics from Opeth, Cradle of Filth, Paradise Lost and Anathema.

Cannibal Corpse & Krisiun : Nosturi Helsinki Finland

April 26th, 2016
by Arto Lehtinen

Cannibal Corpse /  Krisiun

The 21st of April 2016
Nosturi Helsinki Finland

Cannibal Corpse has managed to maintain such a loyal and renewing fan base during these years. When the gore death metallers made the first visit to Finland back in 1998 with Dark Funeral and Infernal Majesty, I dare to claim the audience was totally different and none of those who attended that show, hardly arrived at Nosturi to witness Cannibal Corpse along with the Brazilian death metal trio Krisiun. However, it was overwhelming to note as between 400-500 deathbangers crawled to Nosturi on Thursday to share the pit of zombies and get devoured by vermin.

Abbath Moonsorrow and Grave booked to Brutal Assault

April 24th, 2016
by Arto Lehtinen

Black Friday announcement with ABBATH, MOONSORROW and GRAVE!

This time we’re about to bring more orthodox stuff to the table, starting with Norwegian giant gone solo ABBATH! The aptly named DARKENED NOCTURN SLAUGHTERCULT will perform their blood soaked ritual at this BA. We are also welcoming the pagan veterans MOONSORROW. Germans DUST BOLT bring thrash metal as well as their partners in crime LOST SOCIETY from Finland. Blasphemous Polish death metal act EMBRIONAL will be part of the line-up as well as Swedish melodic doom/death act OCTOBER TIDE and lycanthro punk originators WOLFBRIGADE. Fans of modern forms of metal would appreciate young Australian metalcore with mathcore elements JACK THE STRIPPER. American songwriter KING DUDE will perform his dark neo folk. Unfortunate news in the end, NILE had to pull out the fest, however we managed to get two other great death metal acts on the bill to compensate this loss. Namely the godfathers of Swedish death metal GRAVE and the returning turn-of-the-millenium Brazilian prospects REBAELLIUN!

VOICE OF REASON is the brand new fifth release from the undisputed kings of progressive/heavy metal, Cloudscape. The album was released at the end of January and their previous album came out in 2012. The band have always released albums quickly so why they had such a gap in between albums was one of the questions I brought along to singer Mike Andersson. With VOICE OF REASON the band worked with a producer they haven’t worked with before in Anders Theo Theander, however the album was recorded in the same studio they recorded their previous excellent albums; RoastingHouse Studio located in Malmo, Sweden. Read on to find out what the band is up to now that the album is released… enjoy.
