Guitar virtuoso, singer, songwriter, multi instrumentalist, and producer Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal has released his 10th CD entitled “Little Brother Is Watching” today. The album is an eccentric, upbeat collection of modern epic rock with haunting melodies, huge choruses and witty lyrics about life in the digital age and beyond. Specifically, his own life and coming to terms with what we all face – beginnings, endings, and moving on. The album was composed, produced, recorded, mixed and mastered by Bumblefoot at his studio in New Jersey, and also features drummer Dennis Leeflang and a crowd of 100 fans stomping, chanting and singing backing vocals recorded at a listening party in New York.
Bumblefoot has over 20 years of releasing music, performing at international festivals, headlining solo tours, won many album of the month/year awards and has appeared on the covers of numerous music magazines as a solo artist. As lead guitarist of Guns N’ Roses, Bumblefoot toured sold-out shows all over the world, headlining festivals with crowds up to 150,000 people. Bumblefoot’s unique ‘fretless guitar’ can be heard throughout GNR’s 2008 Chinese Democracy album.
Bumblefoot has current collaborations that include DMC from the iconic rap group Run DMC, and Scott Weiland in the supergroup Art Of Anarchy. His music is often heard in TV, film and video games including the theme song to VH1’s “That Metal Show”. Bumblefoot also works with U.S. Embassies around the world on cross-cultural music programs, has his own line of award-winning hot sauces, and works with dozens of international charities visiting orphanages and children’s hospitals with guitar in hand.

EUROPE’s place as a legendary classic rock band was platinum-stamped early in their career, having enjoyed an explosive period of worldwide success in the ‘80s, under-pinned by their hit album and single The Final Countdown, before going on hiatus between 1992 and 2003. They reunited and quickly settled into a period of re-establishment which has seen them re-enforce their reputation worldwide as one of the premier purveyors of blues-tinged classic rock with an edge and some kick. Their last album, 2012’s Bag of Bones, saw EUROPE hit the UK top 40 rock album charts and debut at #2 on the Swedish national charts.

Neal Smith is an American drummer, best known as a member of Alice Cooper group from 1967 to 1974. He performed on the group’s early albums PRETTIES FOR YOU and EASY ACTION, the breakout album LOVE IT TO DEATH and the subsequent successful albums KILLER, SCHOOL’S OUT, BILLION DOLLAR BABIES and MUSCLE OF LOVE. The line-up broke up in 1974, and next Smith founded the Billion Dollar Babies with former Alice Cooper group colleagues Michael Bruce and Dennis Dunaway along with Bob Dolin and Mike Marconi. The band released BATTLE AXE in 1977 before disbanding. Later on Smith has recorded with such bands and artists as Buck Dharma, Plasmatics, Deadringer and Cinematic. Smith and Dunaway formed Bouchard, Dunaway & Smith (BDS) which released two albums in the early 2000. In 2011, Smith was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in the “Performer” category, as a member of the original Alice Cooper band. He also performed on Alice Cooper’s WELCOME 2 MY NIGHTMARE (2011) album. Currently Smith works primarily in real estate business in New England area, but is still active in the music world as well. Among other projects he has an industrial rock project called Killsmith which released its third album KILLSMITH & THE GREENFIRE EMPIRE in late 2014. I met the legend in his office at Connecticut on last November and here’s what he had to tell about his current activities, the past and the future. Read on!

Having been a fan of Wolf since I first saw them at Bloodstock in 2009 I was more than ready for their return to the UK and one of my favourite London venues; The Underworld, Camden. With it’s dark, intensely close atmosphere it’s a terrific venue for high energy and engaging bands such as the ones on the bill that evening.
Could there be a more perfect date on the calendar for a brutal Death and Black Metal show than February 14th, St. Valentine’s Day? I think not! That was the scenario for the Cannibal Corpse/Behemoth/Aeon/Tribulation show in Calgary. By a cruel twist of fate Calgary Metalheads had a very difficult choice to make as the Napalm Death/Voi-vod/Exhumed/Iron Reagan show was also in town the same night. These unfortunate coincidences happen on occasion as tours pass by and in a market of one million people it’s understandable that sometimes conflicts happen. What wasn’t clear was why several local bands scheduled bar shows on the same night as these tours!
The choice of which show to see was essentially made for me as my radio show also fell on that night and the station is located in the same building as the Cannibal Corpse show. I wasn’t heart-broken that the Cannibal/Behemoth show was my first choice as Napalm Death’s whiny, left-wing politics and lyrics have always left a bad taste in my mouth. In a semi-rare act of collaboration the two competing promoters tried to make a workable schedule. The Napalm Death show was at a much smaller venue (capacity 400 and did end up being a packed show) in a bar.The Cannibal Corpse/Behemoth show was at a public hall and was an all-ages gig. So the Cannibal show started early and the Napalm Death show started late.I spoke with many friends who planned to rush out of the Cannibal show (capacity 1000 and sold out)and head down to the bar (a mere 15 minute drive) and hopefully catch the tail end of Voi-vod before Napalm Death’s set. MacEwan Hall Ballroom seems to stick to a tight curfew lately and the all-ages gig had to start promptly even though there were people still waiting to get in as Tribulation started.Luckily I showed up early enough to catch the entire set.
It was my first time seeing Sweden’s Tribulation live and I was pleasantly surprised. Their compact 30 minute set brought 4-5 songs of their brand of progressive blackened death. I was especially impressed with the drummer,Jackob Ljungberg who had a lot of energy and brought a big rock show style to the songs. The opening slot is always tough, especially playing to a half-empty room but they held their own.By the time they closed with ‘When The Sky Is Black With Devils’,from their latest album, THE FORMULAS OF DEATH they had a mini-mosh pit going. They were charismatic and interesting and I think they will do well. A few people I chatted with after the set were really impressed with them.
The crowd was filling out nicely, and it was a young composite crowd.I commented to one of my older buddies that there were lots of young people and girls, something you would not have seen back in the early 90’s. He agreed and it was interesting to note that the old conflict between Black Metal and Death Metal fans that existed in the 90’s has largely faded away and now you have these multi-genre bills sharing the stage. Accordingly, up next was Aeon, straight-up old-school Death Metal also from Sweden.
The Metal Blade Records artist has been around for a while but it was odd that they were on the bill because it has been now over two years since their last album AEON’S BLACK was released. In one sense AEON were a bit dull compared to Tribulation.Dull is perhaps not the correct term but the band is far more relentless and far less musical than Tribulation. Aeon ripped through a 30 minute set of brutal old-school Death Metal largely inspired by Cannibal Corpse. I do not want to sound negative as they were heavy and brutal but they lacked stage presence and charisma of the other acts on the bill. However the back to basics style was admittedly crushing, no frills classic Death Metal and they cranked it up a notch.
Up next were Behemoth who were back in Calgary less than a year after the Metal Alliance Tour 2014.Riding high on a very well-received 2014 album (THE SATANIST) and the pending release of not one but two Behemoth related books, the Polish Blackened Death/Black Metalwere by far the most theatrical act of the night. They brought the big show with corpse-paint, costumes, black leather, flaming torches, smoke, stage-props, big lights, spitting blood, pre-recorded intros, orchestral backing tracks and choreographed stage moves…it was almost like Kiss in 1976 all over! The band did not fail to entertain as the quartet drew largely from their second-era of material. Crystal clear sound, lots of room on stage and years of experience made them perhaps the highlight of the night.
The final band up was Cannibal Corpse. After the theatrical performance from Behemoth, the stage was stripped back down to basics and it was just Cannibal Corpse headbanging and delivering brutal death metal. The band still has a huge and avid following, and their following has continued to buy so many albums that Metal Blade Records presented Cannibal an award for two million sold in their career at one of their shows on this tour.
It seemed the crowd surfers had saved their energy for the final band because they started going hard. There was a sign indicated that if they crowd surfed more than once they were out, but by the few repeats going across, the venue may not have been kicking people out. “Scourge of Iron” kicked off the set and the band relentlessly tore through their first three songs before frontman George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher even acknowledged them. Always stoic and looking slightly unimpressed on stage, Corpsegrinder provoked the audience’s fervour in-between songs. Tracks like “Kill of Become” and “Icepick Lobotomy” from the newest release SKELETAL DOMAIN were featured. The pit was constantly moving and classic songs such as “Make them Suffer” and “Stripped, Raped, and Strangled” could ignite the crowd into further tumult. The encore was a satisfying two song assault of “Hammer Smashed Face” and “Devoured by Vermin”.

Of the bands that emerged during the turbulent birth of Norwegian black metal in the early ‘90s, arguably none have been as productive, consistent or diverse as Haugesund-born/Bergen-based Enslaved. Rather than revel in the controversy or “true Norwegian black metal” purist sentiments of some of their brothers in arms, Enslaved have honed their craft since 1991 with a steady stream albums that grew ever-more experimental – especially after 1998’s furious Blodhemn – and continued to break new ground – for instance, touring in the North America for the first time in 1995, when Norwegian black metal still was mostly just a sinister curiosity here.
Over time, as Enslaved’s lineup solidified – its roster since 2004 has been founding guitar Ivar Bjørnson and bassist/vocalist Grutle Kjellson, guitarist Arve “Ice Dale” Isdal, keyboardist/vocalist Herbrand Larsen and drummer Cato Bekkevold – the band’s music metamorphosed into something far more progressive than mere black metal. More recently, the band seem to have found a happy medium between prog-rock atmosphere and breadth and extreme metal ferocity and power.
Along the way, they have become something of a national treasure in their home country, scoring a number of “album of the year” awards – including four Spellemannprisen, or Norwegian Grammys. Last year, along with Norse-folk act Wardruna, they were commissioned to compose a special musical work to mark the 200th anniversary of the Norwegian Constitution.
Enslaved’s 13th studio full-length, In Times, will be issued on March 10. It is perhaps the most listener friendly work the band have done, albeit still a challenging one, as it mixes inviting grooves and melodies with epic scale, dramatic about-faces, the omnipresent harsh counterpoint of Kjellson’s feral growl and occasional forays into traditional Norwegian folk music and the like. The band will launch the album with a North American tour kicking off March 5 in San Diego, with Yob and Ecstatic Vision in tow, that leads up to a residence at the four-day Roadburn Festival in Holland in early April featuring several unique performances.
After apologetically chiming in late for our originally scheduled interview time via Skype, Bjørnson rang back at the end of his slate to discuss Enslaved’s new album and tour, the Roadburn Festival for which he was invited to curate, the band’s long career and how they continue to challenge themselves after nearly a quarter-century of extreme metal radicalism.

An album trailer, featuring comments from the band and previews of new music is available now.
