How Rolling Stone developed their
list called ’20 Best Metal Albums of 2014’
Recently word hit the street that Rolling Stone Magazine was going to develop a Metal List. We here at www.metal-rules.com knew this would be an incredible innovative and ground-breaking media event so we sent a spy into the Rolling Stone boardroom. Our agent of steel, took a few pictures and wired up a microphone to eavesdrop on their editorial meeting about the Metal List. What you are about to read are exact, unaltered, unedited, honest-and-for-true transcripts of those conversations. Really.
BATTLE BEAST Release “Madness” Video Clip & Digital Single
BATTLE BEAST will release their third record Unholy Savior on January 09 (EU), January 12 (UK) and January 13 (US) 2015 via Nuclear Blast. The band recently shot a video clip for the glorious new hymn “Madness”, along with producer Ville Lipiainen (NIGHTWISH, HYPOCRISY and more) and some beautiful special guests. Watch the sexy result here:
The long ships will return to North America once again when Norwegian-progressive-extreme-metal-Vikings, ENSLAVED, embark on their headlining tour this upcoming March! “Some days are greater than others,” commented guitarist Ivar Bjørnson. “Announcing the release of our new album In Times at the same time as a North American tour, both in early March 2015, makes for one hell of an event horizon. We’ve had such great tours in the US and Canada the last years; we simply cannot wait to come back! Ah, this can’t get much better. Hey, wait – masters YOB has accepted our invitation to be special guests, and ECSTATIC VISION is supporting. Now, there’s an amazing package for you (that’s what she said)!”
Former EVILE lead guitarist OL DRAKE is currently mixing his debut solo album with producer and former DEATH/OBITUARY/TESTAMENT guitarist JAMES MURPHY.
The six-string shredder has been working on his first album of extreme instrumental music, which was recorded in the guitarist’s home studio and is due to be released in 2015 under the title ‘Old Rake’.
OL DRAKE comments:
“Finally, I can reveal the artwork I’ve had for the 14 months I’ve spent finding my feet, laughing at the artwork, writing and recording this album. Fans took to calling me ‘Old Rake’ instead of ‘Ol Drake’ and it kind of stuck, so I thought I’d honour their hugely creative moving of one letter by calling this solo debut ‘Old Rake’ by ‘Ol Drake’ and creating a logo (by Chris Gunnz) for the ‘Ol Drake’ album saying ‘Old Rake'; confusing, no? Thought not.
“I’m honoured to have the great James Murphy mixing the album. Since I was a teenager I’ve been a fan of James’ playing in Testament, Obituary and Death, so having worked with him on this has had the 16-year old in me shouting strange noises at me in my head. You shan’t be disappointed! Especially if you’re a guitarist.
“The album was produced by myself and James. It has been recorded in my home studio, ‘StudiOliveR’ in Huddersbottom (I moved from Huddersfield to Ramsbottom in Bury amidst recording it) and it is now in the capable hands of Mr. James Murphy; he’s currently mixing it to shred-y perfection.
“In the album art, I wanted to show me raking lots of people up with a rake, because that seemed to make sense at the time. It doesn’t now but it’s still funny. I didn’t want a stock picture of me holding a guitar as if to say ‘Hey guys, I’m here holding a guitar and this is my album’. I hope you enjoy it, and your support on its release will be hugely appreciated.”

The Pennsylvania based heavy/progressive metal act MindMaze recently released their second album BACK FROM THE EDGE and I hooked up with the siblings Jeff and Sarah Teets, who run the band, in order to get to know the band a little bit better. We talked about the new album, the well known bass player Mike LePond who plays session bass on the album. I also got to know more about the bands past and what they’re up to in the near future.

A while ago I hooked up with guitar virtuoso Johan Reinholdz (Andromeda, Skyfire) in order to talk about the brilliant new Nonexist album FROM MY COLD DEAD HANDS. The band is back on track again and since I love the bands music I thought it was time to feature the band once again in Metal-Rules.com. The first Nonexist album came out in 2002 called DEUS DECEPTOR and I urge every fan of extreme metal to check out the bands two albums so far. Reinholdz and I spoke about putting the band together again, his relationship to the singer – the wellknown Johan Liiva (ex- Arch Enemy, Hearse, Furbowl) and what the future has in store for Nonexist.

Stahlsarg was conceived in 2013 featuring previous members of Eastern Front, they are a non political band who write music and lyrics from a historical and subjective point of view of the brutal campaigns of WW2, they create their own brand of blackened death metal.

English/American hybrid Anaal Nathrakh are one of the most intriguing and unusual bands in extreme music – with an emphasis on unusual and extreme. The duo – California-based guitarist/bassist/programmer Mick Kenney, an English transplant, and Birmingham, England-based vocalist David Hunt, also known fittingly as “V.I.T.R.I.O.L” – work in mysterious ways to produce a punishingly unique shit-storm of black/death metal, grindcore, industrial and electronic music.
Anaal Nathrakh tour sparingly, but have been remarkably productive since forming in 1999. Their latest album, the just-released Desideratum, is their eighth, to go along with an EP. Over time, the band’s chaotic music – occasionally flavored by contributions from Mayhem’s Attila Csihar, Napalm Death’s Shane Embury and Danny Herrera, Lock Up’s Nick Barker and Watain’s Set Teitan – has grown bigger, brasher and more calamitous.
Desideratum is Anaal Nathrakh’s most thunderous effort yet. Amazingly, it’s also their most immediate and easiest to warm up to, thanks in part to Kenney’s slashing hooks and crushing grooves, some surprisingly infectious rampaging melodies and Hunt’s vocal gymnastics. The apocalypse never sounded so awesome.
On the phone from the U.K. – a week after a Skype failure put the kibosh on a batch of interviews with the states, mine included – Hunt talked about Anaal Nathrakh’s unconventional logistics, incendiary sonic mish-mash and the unorthodox method by which it gets made.
