When the legendary Bay Area thrash metal veterans visited Helsinki with their own headlining gig fronted by Rob Dukes and Paul Bostaph some years ago, there were hardly 300 or even less thrash metal maniacs having attended the show. Well some years have passed since then until when Exodus hit the Finnish shore with another headlining gig with the domestic thrash wonderkids Lost Society supporting them. The expectations of the number of the attendance were guessed in advance before the show, but having over 500 tickets sold in the pre-sale was beyond the expectation for sure. That was definitely awesome. However the Finnish young thrash patrol Lost Society gave another lesson of violence.
When arriving at the Nosturi club there was a huge line of the thrash metal maniacs waiting into the club. Lost Society had already kicked the maelstrom of intensive headbanging and a pure riffstorm. The band has relied on all kinds of lame of humor aspects in the past shows, but supporting slot for Exodus proved Lost Society is definitely a vicious and intensive and murderous live act. When abandoning all the worthless and needless hassling, just focusing on creating the total of riff thrash storm with the incredible headbanging at the stage, that gave the entire new meaning of the brutal performance for Lost Society. The four piece just proved to be one hell of a thrash metal war machine by sacrificing themselves at the stage and gave a lesson of the master guided riff playing. The set list consisted of the material off from the new album such as “I Am The Antidote” and of course the mandatory “Terror Hungry” is the essential one for the hyperfast thrash hymn.

When Lost Society’s intensive gig was over and the audience was still gasping for the air, the stage was prepared for Exodus’ tempo of thrash. The latest Exodus offering BLOOD IN BLOOD OUT is still amazingly intensive refreshing brilliant thrash piece of slab. Therefore it was expected to hear quite a few songs picked up from that 10th full length album. Yes indeed those new songs sounded damn catchy as well as brutal as “Body Harvest”, “Salt The Wounds”, and “Blood In Blood Out” were the part of the setlist. Not that surprising the classic debut album BONDED BY BLOOD played the biggest role in the night’s setlist. All in all six songs off from the classic debut album encouraged the crowd go utter insane and bezerk in the pit. The pit turned out to be a merciless and savage and time to time the whole floor was on fire when the insane thrashers crushed their sweating bodies against each other. It surely did help when Steve “Zetro” Souza’s commanded the pit go brutal as hell. But to be honest, Exodus sounded really tight and brutal. Tom Hunting’s clock tight drumming creates the essential part of the Exodus sound. His incredible way of blasting the drums along Jack Gibson’s crushing bass lines and the double guitar work by Kragen Lum and Lee Altus created the total crushing sounds of thrash by Exodus. The five-piece is definitely in the vital strike and they can still deliver the tempo of the old school thrash metal at its best. “Toxic Waltz” has become one kind of hymn for pit rioters, when the opening riff cut the air, the pit turned an incredible huge, bodies were flying all over and when the final song “Strike Of The Beast” concluded the set with another chaotic pit storm. Indeed Exodus stroke now back with the vengeance. Even though Gary Holt was now missing, he was busy with his duties with Slayer, Exodus still lives strong and the band still breathes metal more than well in 2016. It was definitely overwhelming and pleasure to see the packed venue on Saturday night in Helsinki. Above all the domestic young thrash guns Lost Society showed their skills skills and they proved that they’re now ready to conquer the metal world. All in all it would be fabulous to see more often as many metal fans as today to attend upcoming metal shows in the future.

Madame Mayhem – Following her Musical Passion!

Madame Mayhem, is a true rocker with an eclectic style in every aspect of life. Armed with a new CD, Now You Know, written by Corey Lowery and herself, she is an extreme artist on the rise to stardom.
Now You Know features a powerhouse team of rock’s most talented musicians including; Billy Sheehan [Mr. Big, Winery Dogs] – who produced and played on the album, Ray Luzier [KoRn] Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal [Guns N’ Roses], Russ Parrish [Satchel from Steel Panther], and Corey Lowery [Saint Asonia, Stuck Mojo]. With friends and musicianship like that backing you, how can this not be a stellar CD!
I caught up with Madame Mayhem to talk about her diverse musical upbringing, the new CD, and working with Billy Sheehan.

Few bands have had a rougher go of it than Megadeth the last few years. In 2014, band leader Dave Mustaine had to undergo neck surgery a second time, cancelling their participation in the inaugural Motorboat cruise. Then longtime band members Chris Broderick (guitars) and Shawn Drover (drums) left Megadeth, citing creative differences. The band didn’t tour for a long time, but I just knew wily ol’ Dave had something good up his sleeve. Never, ever, count Megadeth out! Dave’s response to these challenges was to recruit Lamb of God’s drumming powerhouse Chris Adler and Brazilian shredder Kiko Loureiro from Angra and then record the band’s best album in years, DYSTOPIA! Only a killer bill would be fitting for the tour, so we get crossover thrash legends Suicidal Tendencies (with fucking Dave Lombardo on drums!), melodic death metallers Children of Bodom, and young in age but old in style thrashers Havok! Are you metalheads salivating yet or what? Tonight we are in Bethlehem PA, a former steel town that generated most of the steel used for the US ships during WWII. Let’s get Bethlehem cranking out some metal again! SET THE WORLD AFIRE! BRING IT!
Dimlight recently released their new album, ‘The Lost Chapters,’ via Sliptrick Records. The band’s music can be characterized as Symphonic Death Metal blended with dark symphonic elements, aggressive guitars, sharp female vocals but also deep and eerie brutal shouts. Dimlight enjoys live performances and their dynamic and energetic stage presence engages the audience.

After being heavily involved with previous productions Marco “Maki” Coti Zelati took over the leading role as producer together with his fellow bandmates. 2016 shows LACUNA COIL including US drummer Ryan Blake Folden as a tight unit that realized their collective vision for “Delirium” at BRX Studio in their native Milan between December 2015 and February 2016. Yet again they were working with Marco Barusso (engineer, mix) who had not only worked with LACUNA COIL in the past on several albums such as “Dark Adrenaline” and “Karmacode”, but also on Italian high profile artists like Eros Ramazzotti or Laura Pausini Marco “Maki” Coti Zelati also created the artwork for “Delirium” which is based on an atmospheric session captured by italian photographer Alessandro Olgiati.

With their symphonic black/death metal bluster and ashen, war-painted/leather-cloaked appearance, it’s easy to see how Montreal’s Necronomicon draw comparisons to Behemoth and Dimmu Borgir – at least from a musical and aesthetic standpoint. But from a philosophical perspective – not to mention their panda-face makeup and three-person lineup – Necronomion have much more in common with Immortal.
Yet where Immortal long have reveled in tales of battles and demons in their mythical frozen kingdom on Blashyrkh, Necronomicon embarked on a more mystical, transcendent journey through the cosmos – and man’s place within the greater whole of the universe – with their 1999 full-length debut Pharoah of Gods. That voyage continues with their fifth and latest effort Advent of the Human God, due out March 25 on Season Of Mist.
During an interview via Skype from Montreal – and later via e-mail – founder/frontman/guitarist/songwriter/producer Rob “The Witch” Tremblay spoke, among other things, about Necronomicon’s unique, often otherworldly, take on death/black metal and how the band’s origins in the wilds of Northeast Canada play into that, the challenges of trying to pull of such ambitious music as a three-piece – the band is rounded out by long-time drummer Rick and newish bassist Mars – and the uncomfortable run-in with the German thrash band they have shared the Necronomicon moniker with for more than 20 years.

31 years since the release of debut album “Bonded by Blood” and Bay Area legends Exodus hit the road with a European and UK tour to mark the occasion.
Carrying Lost Society and Striker in tow, they paid a visit to The Underworld in London (admittedly one of their favourite spots to play, according to frontman Steve “Zetro”) for what was to be a consistently crazy night of crowdsurfing and moshing for all to enjoy.

I have not seen the 2500+ capacity MacEwan Hall sold out for a Metal show in a long, long time. Not even for bands that also pull in the more mainstream crowds like Blind Guardian and Gwar. But Nightwish did it! At their second concert in Calgary in over 20 years, the place was packed for an extra-ordinary bill of Euro-Metal. Delain and Sonata Arctica have also been through Calgary before and the crowds were out in force to see the triple stacked show. I’m not surprised Nightwish is riding a career high with a triumphant North American tour with their new signer as they just recently won the award for Best Metal album in their homeland of Finland.
Store Delivery Enables Bands to Direct Distribute Vinyl from Pressing Plant to Record Stores Worldwide
In a twist on the crowdfunding model, vinyl pressing and presale platform QRATES has launched Store Delivery, a new service shaking up vinyl distribution by enabling record stores worldwide to directly buy, and even help fund, artist and label vinyl projects.
The appeal of vinyl isn’t diminishing and for many artists having their vinyl sold at a record store is something particularly special. For smaller artists and labels though getting their music stocked in stores is still a challenge, especially when it comes to selling vinyl in foreign countries. Not to mention trying to secure space at the oversubscribed pressing plants, if they even know how to go about organising a pressing.
Enter QRATES, which since April 2015 has facilitated artists to sell or pre-fund, press and distribute their vinyl releases direct to fans. New addition Store Delivery opens this up to record stores enabling them to purchase vinyl at wholesale prices, as well as participate in funding projects. Once pressed the finished product is then automatically delivered direct to the store. Additional capability is planned for the future, such as the ability for artists to sell their back catalogue to stores as well.
Currently in Beta, but due for full launch imminently, Store Delivery incorporates a network of over 200 record shops and buyers. Partners include Juno Records, Europe’s largest online record store, and Jetset, HMV and Technique in Japan. QRATES intends to expand this to 1000 stores globally by 2018, starting with the US this spring.
In its first year of operation QRATES has already hosted over 1000 funding projects for artists across every genre, with many successfully reaching their targets. It’s not only artists and labels finding opportunities through QRATES though. In something of an evolution from the old CD covermount, music media are also seeing the potential in special funded vinyl projects, including music curation blog Noon Pacific, which completed a limited edition vinyl compilation project.
Greg Gouty, COO of QRATES explains: “Our business is built on the belief that every artist should be able to put out vinyl if they wish, regardless of whether they have access to the expertise and contacts of a big label or not. Store Delivery takes this a step further by opening up the door for anyone, artist or label, to offer their vinyl records to stores worldwide. What’s more full control and profits go directly into the artists and labels hands.”
