A Forest of Stars Interview with Curse, TS

Kettleburner and the Gentleman

1st November 2014

Interview by Caitlin Smith

A Forests of Stars may have been simmering below the surface of the British black metal scene now with their unusual mix of black metal and progressive, all brought together by the downright strangest of minds, but it wasn’t till the release of their latest record A Shadowplay for Yesterdays back in 2012 that this band really made some serious headway out of the underground. Arriving suited and booted in their finery and bringing with them a healthy dose of dark humour, we sit down with Curse, The Gentleman and Mr TS Kettleburner to get to grips on what really makes this group of time travelling musicians tick.

Interview with Mortarium

by Addison Herron-Wheeler

Mortarium’s claim to fame is that they are the only all-female doom band from Brazil, but they are a lot more than that. They are also a great doom band regardless of gender and nationality, and some pretty rad chicks, to boot. Check out this exclusive Metal-Rules.com interview with the one and only Mortarium below.

Carcass on Halloween in Colorado!

November 26th, 2014

Carcass Carcass

My husband and I showed up to The Black Sheep in Colorado Springs, Colorado at 8:00 on Halloween night. Allegedly doors were at 7:00 but I guess the show started early or something, because we missed openers Noisem from Baltimore and Exhumed! I was looking forward to seeing Noisem because they hail from near my homeland in Richmond VA and have a split out with some friends of mine from Richmond, Occultist. I really like grindcore, and from what I’ve heard recorded they are pretty rippin’. I also of course wanted to catch Exhumed, being that they are one of my all-time favorite bands, but I have seen them before and will no doubt get to catch them again.

VENOM To Release New Album In 2015

November 26th, 2014
by Celtic Bob

VENOM  -the hugely influential British heavy metal trio, widely revered for driving and shaping many aspects of the music industry, including black and thrash metal as well as for their instinctive blending of metallic power and punk spirit- have confirmed the release of their new studio album, From the Very Depths. It will be released January 27 via Spinefarm Records.

The band is led by vocalist/bassist and original VENOM titan, Cronos, who decided against making fans the world over wait too long for this powerful new 14-track release, which is the follow-up to 2011’s Fallen Angels, also issued via Spinefarm.

So… VENOM will be unleashing their fourteenth studio album, via CD and download, on January 27, with a double vinyl format to follow shortly after.

Cronos says, “This album is perfect, all three members are totally over-the-top confident with the new songs and the production. We had a great atmosphere in the studio while we were recording. Dante created pure thunder from his drums, while Rage tears the flesh off your face with his riffs, making everything fall into place so well. It’s a strong release and really shows the band maturing into an unstoppable force of pure Black Metal. We can’t wait to play the new songs live for the Legions… Hell Yeah!”

Just as the aftermath of Christmas can be laced with reminders of gluttony and false cheer, so VENOM will unleash a full-throttle, full-length LP to drag you even further into HELL!

This is the heaviest Black Fuckin’ Metal and is not for wimps.

Naturally, further details will be revealed shortly.

I wish Dave and everyone in Megadeth all the best. I am working on a few things of my own and hope that when they come out, you will all dig it.”

MEGADETH – Drummer Shawn Drover quits band

November 25th, 2014
by EvilG

Shawn DRover 2In surprising news, drummer Shawn Drover announced today (Nov. 25) that he has quit Megadeth. The stickman had been in the legendary metal band for 10 years.

Megadeth are no strangers to lineup changes, with frontman Dave Mustaine being the only consistent member of the band throughout the group’s existence. Bassist David Ellefson is also an original member, but spent a handful of years out of Megadeth until rejoining the group in 2010.

Drover joined the band in 2004 and played on the band’s last four albums, including 2013′s ‘Super Collider.’ In an official statement (via Blabbermouth), the drummer wrote the following:

After 10 years, I have decided to quit Megadeth to pursue my own musical interests. I want to thank Dave Mustaine and the entire Megadeth family, as well as thanking all the amazing Megadeth fans around the world!!! I truly appreciate all of you. Stay tuned for info on my next musical journey.
There’s no word yet on Drover’s replacement. We’ll keep you posted as more news breaks.

Edu Falaschi: special guest on Russian band Stilverlight debut

November 25th, 2014
by EvilG

Brazilian singer and composer Edu Falaschi (ALMAH, ex-ANGRA) for the first time in his career collaborated with a Russian band and recorded a guest vocal part for the self-titled debut album of heavy/power/folk metal band Stilverlight from Saint-Petersburg.

One can hear Edu’s voice in “Open Your Eyes” composition in a vocal fight with the band’s singer Max Palanin. The album will have its digital release on November 28, 2014 at Power Prog label (Germany).

STILVERLIGHT was formed in 2009. Their sound can be described as “unique styled Melodic Power Metal with multifarious influences”. Elements from Thrash, Folk, Heavy and Speed Metal can be clearly perceived and give the whole thing a very interesting and special touch. A well known Ukrainian producer and engineer Max Morton (Morton band) was responsible for the mixing and mastering.

Igor Radomsky (guitars): “I’m really happy that Edu accepted our invitation to participate in our first album!I am a huge fan of his singing in Angra and I really like Almah.”

At The Gates – Nosturi Helsinki Finland

November 25th, 2014
by Arto Lehtinen

AT THE GATES with Rotten Sound

The 22nd of November

Nosturi Helsinki Finland

The Swedish legendary At The Gates returned with the ultimate revenge by releasing the outstanding album AT WAR WITH REALITY. The album is definitely a piece of evidence of the band’s skills and ability to create the catchy and killer riff filled songs. However At the Gates have visited Finland by doing a few festival shows since the return, but never ever played any single club gig not in the present day nor in the heyday. Therefore the three gig tour in Finland was basically about time, as At The Gates has definitely gained the cult and fanatical following up here in Finland.

IMG_6295 IMG_6287

The Nosturi club was totally packed on Saturday night. Before At The Gates’ riffmaelstrom hit the stage the domestic grind core mongers Rotten Sound conquered the stage to warm-up the audience. The four piece’s 30 minute set of intensive grinding was the pure pleasure of the sonic torment from the beginning to the end without any mercy. Rotten Sound’s frontman’s comments could be found a bit of humouristic and amusing. But he has always got the good way of expressing himself with the good sense of humor. Rotten Sound is always extreme, brutal uncompromising live act, no doubt about that. The audience could have been more brutal though.

The more and more people was arriving before the opening intro roared out. Finally the place is totally packed, quite close to sold-out. That was a good sign as some metal gigs have suffered from the low attendances and it has been written and spoken the metal is in the crisis in Finland.

The masters of the old school Gothenburg death metal proved to be in the vicious strike already on the first opening riff of “Death And The Labyrinth”. The frontman Tompa’s unique screaming vocals is a pure trademark of the sounds for At The Gates. The lethal catchy riffs by the guitar duet; Anders Björler and Martin Larsson, worked and sounded utter tight and above all razor sharp. Jonas Bjorler hit the bass with the raging passion As stated a bit earlier Tompa’s sound being unique, but it has that tight and unique dry approach. He hasn’t lost any inch instead during these years. Instead he encouraged the audience go utter beserk. At The Gates’s older material from the 90’s is still as relevant as the present days. It still sounds refreshing new and brilliant. Those songs haven’t aged at all. As for the newer material off the AT WAR WITH REALITY album fitting along with the older material more than perfectly. Of course the older songs like Suicide Nation, Kingdom Gone etc caused the energetic ballistic reactions amongst the audience. In general the the near 90 minute set included a surprising lot of tunes picked up from the classical SLAUGHTER OF THE SOULS album. Of course the songs from the other albums played the tight important role in the setlist. To be honest At The Gates still has its own grip, as the five piece still kicked and whipped. It was awesome to witness the legendary outfit in the club atmosphere, giving more intimate feeling. Hopefully ATG will arrive to do club tours. If ATG will be around your corner, go check them out.

Volbeat @ Roundhouse, London

@ Roundhouse, London

17th November 2014

Review by Kirsty Birkett-Stubbs

Photos by Michelle Murphy

The guy beside me is meerkating. Bouncing up on the tips of his toes, straining his neck, bending this way and that, clutching his phone. Looking for his friends. I can understand. A good gig with good friends is something very lovely indeed. But I want to tell him it doesn’t matter, if only to stop him from keep invading my eye line. Also he’s missing all the songs. The band are just a few feet away and the music is really flying – if you can’t just enjoy that then there’s something a bit wrong. After all we’re all friends here tonight.

And now a girl bursts into tears. Jesus. Let’s assume it’s because of the music, although that would imply levels of hysteria beyond anything expected. Volbeat have never felt big enough to cause such emotion. Not in the UK. Back home, sure, platinum all the way, Europe and the US are on board, but here they’ve always seemed to struggle to impact. People say they like them, but rarely do you meet someone foaming at the mouth, raging about just how good they are. And yet tonight they’ve sold out the show, sold out the impressive Roundhouse no less.

It’s not for us to speculate how or why, but when Hatebreed roll on stage and you can only loosely use the term “full” to describe the place, well it suggests something. It suggests the coins have been coughed up for Volbeat. It suggests the tide is turning.

Raven – John Gallagher

Interview with Raven bassist/vocalist John Gallagher

Conducted by Robert Williams

Video courtesy of Andy Gonzalez – Editing courtesy of Sandra Torres

NWOBHM legends Raven were back out on the road this fall trekking all across the U.S. in what has to be one of their most comprehensive, if not all encompassing tours in years. The British metal stalwarts now celebrating forty years of history as a metal band are on the cusp of releasing “ExtermiNation” their thirteenth full-length album due this coming February via a collaboration between the band’s current record label SPV and a Kickstarter crowd funded campaign by their die-hard fanbase. We caught up with bassist/vocalist John Gallagher shortly before the band took the stage in Austin, Texas in early October. John previewed some of the new Raven material for us and it sounded loud, lethal and assaulting. John fills us in on the upcoming album “ExtermiNation” as well as “Party Killers”an exclusive covers album for Kickstarter contributors, the band’s recent run-ins with Metallica and more…

Gwar Eternal Tour 2014

with Corrosion of Conformity and American Sharks

The Gwar Eternal Tour is just that, the continuation of GWAR and a demonstration that they can keep the story and music going – perhaps for the “next thousand years”.  Gwar is soldiering on after their bandleader and vocalist Dave Brockie, who played Oderus Urungus, sadly passed away after an accidental heroin overdose in March 2014. With Oderus missing from their ranks the scumdogs have joined forces with two new members, Blóthar and Vulvatron, who mysteriously appeared on stage one day through a time travelling device. On this tour Gwar is searching for their missing leader through North American cities and through time. American Sharks from Austin, Texas have been the opening act for the entire tour. Poland’s Decapitated acted as support for the first half of the tour and then were replaced by Corrosion of Conformity for the second half. On November 16, 2014 the tour rolled into Calgary, Alta., to slaughter the masses at MacEwan Hall.
