Interview with Dennie Grondelaers (vocals) and Dries Gaerdelen (keyboards) August 9th, 2015 @ Bloodstock Open Air Festival
Interview by Melanie Brehaut
Self-described ‘epic black metal’ band Saille hail from Belgium and write grandiose stories about death, destruction and darkness. The band formed in 2009 and have so far released three albums on Code666 Records.
Melanie Brehaut caught up with vocalist Dennie Grondelaers and keyboardist Dries Gaerdelen at this year’s Bloodstock festival to chat about live shows, large versus small music festivals, and an exclusive snippet on the concept of their new album…
After their performance on the unsigned stage at Bloodstock Open Air, we had a quick chinwag with a very contented Soulborn about their set and their ambitions for the future. Read the rest of this entry »

What are the chances of seeing the likes of King Diamond and Slayer live in concert twice in the same year? It was just last fall that I caught a headlining festival performance featuring the long awaited return of King Diamond at Austin’s Fun Fun Fun Fest and shortly after that I caught a blistering performance from thrash legends Slayer at the historic Austin City Limits venue atop a billing that also featured Exodus and Suicidal Tendencies. This year’s traveling rock festival turned tabloid controversy that is the Rock Star Energy Drink Mayhem Festival featured the unholiest of pairings in co-headliners Slayer and King Diamond alongside Hellyeah, Whitechapel, Jungle Rot and Sister Sin to name a few. We caught up with vocalist Liv Jagrell of the Swedish second-stage act Sister Sin as well as Slayer drummer Paul Bostaph for some metal talk and managed to snap some pretty choice King Diamond liveshots as well!
The HOT STREAK will continue this fall for THE WINERY DOGS (Richie Kotzen-lead vocals/guitar, Mike Portnoy-drums, Billy Sheehan-bass). Their second appropriately titled, self-produced studio album, HOT STREAK, is set for release October 2 on Loud & Proud Records via RED (a division of Sony Music Entertainment) and in the rest of the world via earMUSIC. It will be preceded by the first single, “Oblivion,” set for release August 25 at radio. A double vinyl edition of the new album is also in the works and is due out in early November.
After playing over 100 shows in support of their self-titled debut album, THE WINERY DOGS are eager to head back out on the road to get behind HOT STREAK. Their first round of U.S. headlining tour dates will kick off October 3 in Ridgefield, CT at the Ridgefield Playhouse. Shows around the globe are already being planned for 2016.
HOT STREAK shows the powerfully pedigreed trio’s initial burst of collective chemistry was no accident, from the strum and headbang of “Captain Love” to the propulsive uplifting vibe of “The Bridge” to the introspective acoustic harmonic convergence of “Fire.” If these three Dogs thought they captured lightning in a supper dish the first time around, HOT STREAK barks ups the aural ante into exciting new territory.
“I feel we’ve taken the band to another level,” explains Richie Kotzen. “The compositions are stronger on this album. I feel more connected lyrically and musically to what I did on this record than on the last one. We’ve widened the musical scope of the band on this record and moved it forward.”
Mike Portnoy continues, “Everything on this album was more of a collaboration than on the first album. There’s just a natural chemistry. The three of us really mesh very, very well, both musically and personally. The mission of this band is to write catchy songs, and not have the musicianship overpower that.”
“I’m glad we’re not playing it safe and just doing songs that automatically fit in the category of what we did on the first record,” Billy Sheehan concludes. “Some of them are a little different, and we definitely took chances. And you have to do that — otherwise, you don’t grow.”
The trio first exploded onto the Rock scene with their self-titled, self-produced and critically acclaimed debut album that was released July 23, 2013 on Loud & Proud Records and a sold-out worldwide tour. THE WINERY DOGS debuted on Billboard’s “Top Alternative Albums” chart at #3, “Top Independent Albums” chart at #4, “Top Rock Albums” chart at #5, “Top Internet Albums” at #8 and “Top 200 Albums” chart at #27.

L-R: Charlie Benante, Frank Bello, Scott Ian, Joey Belladonna, Jon Donais
In the final stages of recording the follow-up to 2011’s Worship Music, Anthrax – Joey Belladonna/vocals, Frank Bello/bass, Charlie Benante/drums, guitarist Jon Donais, and Scott Ian/rhythm guitar – will hit the road beginning August 28 for a 42-city global trek that will see the band playing three major festivals as well as sharing stages with the likes of Motorhead and their fellow Big Four comrades, Slayer.
Anthrax’s Bello, Benante and Ian started the new album writing process back in late 2013 when they began exchanging suggested riffs and other ideas for the new songs. With producer and “sixth member of the band” Jay Ruston, formal writing sessions started last Fall, culminating with about 20 original songs, almost twice as many as the band had ever brought to the recording studio in the past.
According to Benante, “‘Worship Music’ started a new chapter in our career, and it has served as an inspiration for this new album. ‘Worship’ was made up of a lot of different types of songs, some thrashy, some very mid-90s Anthrax-sounding, but this new one is
Said Bello, “The thing about Anthrax…we have this heavy, thrashy music and Joey’s powerful and melodic vocals. I love heavy music, but I also love melody, so the challenge is to blend them together so they sound like Anthrax, and I think we’ve done a really good job of that on this new record.”
The Grammy-nominated Worship Music featured the return of “classic era” vocalist Belladonna, and was named one of the best albums of 2011 in numerous media outlets including SPIN, Metal Hammer, Guitar World, and Loudwire, and provided the band with the rock’n’roll comeback story of the year, all adding up to the excitement and anticipation for this new album.

The 6th Annual GWAR B-Q is set for this weekend and GWAR themselves have promised to deliver four new amazing products for humanity to choke on.
First, the highly anticipated “Let There Be GWAR” book will be available for the first time to the masses of Bohabs that know how to read. (Don’t worry there are plenty of pictures, so even the Bohabs that can’t read can still enjoy it too.) “Let There Be GWAR” is a comprehensive behind-the-scenes history of GWAR. This 360 page oversized hardcover book is chock full of fascinating first-hand accounts and rare, never-before-seen photographs. The book follows the band from the mid-1980s, known in GWAR lore as the “Dim Time,” when the group came together at a derelict dairy building in Richmond, Virginia, through the 1990s and 2000s, when the band spread across the face of the planet like a plague. It’s a must have for all Bohabs, even the illiterate ones.
What is a GWAR B-Q without alcohol? It would still be a festival but not as fun! This year the Scumdogs debut the exclusive Oderus Ale. It’s GWAR’s legendary beer and it’s back by popular demand. These brews always sell out at the GWAR B-Q! For the third year running, Cigar City Brewery of Tampa FL. has crafted a very special tribute brew, Oderus Ale, to the legendary Scumdog! This beer is bold, strong, and drunk just like the ultimate Scumdog warrior it’s named after. Hail ODERUS!!!
And this one is just for you, Bohabs, fires of hell for you to put in your mouth, ’cause life’s too short for bland food! GWAR is also pleased to debut their Bohabanero Sauce. This sauce is not for wimps but it doesn’t sacrifice flavor for heat’s sake. Affectionately named after GWAR’s faithful followers, the Bohabs, this hot sauce brings the smack of habanero peppers and the subtle sweetness of carrots in a unique combination! If you crave equal parts pleasure and pain, Bohabanero Sauce is what you’ve been seeking and you can try it for the first time at the GWAR B-Q!
The one and only CiGWARs are returning to this year’s GWAR B-Q. CiGWAR No.2 is a full bodied smoke with a spicy yet smooth finish. These puros are handcrafted by Pete Johnson of Tatuaje at My Father’s Cigar factory in Nicaragua, available at the GWAR B-Q, and sold exclusively by Havana Connections with five locations in the Richmond and Williamsburg areas. Come smoke a CiGWAR in the great outdoors at Hadad’s Lake during the 6th annual GWAR B-Q.
In addition to GWAR’s Oderus Ale,CiGWARs and BohabaneroSauce, and the new book, there will be a sea of vendors that will be slinging grub and peddling their wares for you human scum to buy.

Capping off this three day festival of music, debauchery and mayhem is the inaugural Brutal Brunch. What is the Brutal Brunch? It’s now the official closing party of the GWAR B-Q and it is FREE and open to the public. The event takes place from 2:00 – 6:00 PM at Abner Clay Park, across the street from the GWARbar located at 217 W Clay St, in the historic Jackson Ward District! The Brutal Brunch will feature live music from The Sawyer Family, Sarah White, and Richmond’s own Mag Bats. This family friendly event (yes, GWAR can be nice and appeal to families sometimes) will showcase more local food and art vendors as GWAR has an ever growing soft spot for Richmond artists! Bring a blanket or grab a chair there. Whatever you do, enjoy the day! The band will be mingling at this party with you human scum, giving you one more opportunity to worship your Lords and Masters and giving GWAR themselves the opportunity to say THANK YOU to GWAR B-Q weekend patrons, sponsors, and meaningless passers-by alike! We encourage you to end your weekend of mayhem and hangovers by hanging with us in the park, visiting GWARbar, and indulging in food and some Hair of the Dog once more before high tailing it out of beautiful Richmond… until next year!
Tickets are still available for purchase at http://gwarbq.com/buy-tickets. Online GWAR B-Q ticket sales end Friday night Aug 14th at 8pm. So, save some money on the advanced online ticket price. B4BQ tickets for Friday Aug. 14th at the National are available at http://tinyurl.com/B4BQTIX. Tickets will still be available at the gates for both shows, the B4BQ and the GWAR B-Q.
Don’t forget to use the hashtags when posting about the weekend’s events!
For our purposes, “Space Metal” is defined as songs about sci-fi stuff….not Apollo 13 “space”. We mean aliens, exploring alien worlds, alternate futures, cool shit like that etc. Here’s what the staff came up with for their top 5 space metal songs!
After perversely closing the New Blood Stage down for Saturday night with their 30 minute set of nasty noise, we spoke to Victorian Whore Dogs vocalist Danny Page about playing Bloodstock Open Air, British humour and being a workaholic.

In a city tormented by a Tube strike – no London Underground trains for nearly two days – anyone headed towards Boston Music Room in Tufnell Park, London, depending on the distance they had to travel, experienced their fair share of travel chaos to and from the venue. With that in mind, the turnout was decent, metalheads gradually filled up the room, no doubt it would have been packed if not for the strike. Read the rest of this entry »
To say San Diego’s Cattle Decapitation take a dim view on mankind is an understatement and then some. 2004’s Humanure took Slipknot’s “People = Shit” sentiment to a literal extreme, and had nature exacting payback on us for all the destruction we had wrought by chewing us up and crapping us out. 2006’s Karma.Bloody.Karma and 2009’s The Harvest Floor expanded on that theme, with man becoming part of the food chain to be raised and slaughtered to fill the gaping maw of our teaming masses after we’d consumed everything else.
2012’s masterful Monolith of Inhumanity looked further into the future, and saw man devolving into a species of ape-like troglodytes – living, breathing pieces of defecating meat doomed to wallow in our own crapulence on a planet of garbage. Which leads us to the band’s seventh and latest album, The Anthropocene Extinction, where it all ends – at least as far as man is concerned – as our mutual assured destruction is complete and the planet we’ve killed has killed us in return. Good times.
After barking – and grunting and squealing and shrieking – up largely the same tree for nearly 20 years, frontman Travis Ryan admits to a certain frustration in that nothing really has changed during that time, except for the worse. But his righteous anger carries him on – even though he’s not sure where it will head next, given humanity has been wiped out on Extinction.
But he’ll worry about that later, because for now, Cattle Decapitation – rounded out by longtime guitarist Josh Elmore, bassist Derek Engemann and drummer David McGraw – will see if the death-grind quartet can build on the momentum of Monolith, with Extinction. Extinction takes the churning groove of Monolith and sends it on a white-knuckle ride of progressive complexity and concussive brutality – all the while boasting some surprising melody in Ryan’s occasional fatalistic croon.
On the phone from a Summer Slaughter tour stop just before Extinction was released, Ryan offered the following about the new album, the tour and what’s come ahead, the commercial potential of a band as extreme as Cattle Decapitation and his “Storage Wars” brushes with greatness.

The decision was made after long consideration, and we will miss him dearly and wish him all the best!
