With five bands playing a vast range of different styles of metal, including symphonic, folk, melodic death, and power metal, this evening featured one of the more diverse lineups I have seen in my concert attending career.
Uli Jon Roth is a German guitarist who became famous as the Scorpions lead guitarist between 1973 and 1978. During that time, the band released studio albums FLY TO THE RAINBOW, IN TRANCE, VIRGIN KILLER and TAKEN BY FORCE followed by a live album TOKYO TAPES which was also the last Scorpions release featuring Roth. Next, he formed his own band called Electric Sun, which released three albums before retiring up in 1986. After Electric Sun Roth entered a new stage of creative work, composing a number of solo albums, four symphonies and two concertos. Today, Roth is known as one of the first and most important inventors of the neo-classical metal genre. In February 2015 Roth released a 2-CD studio album SCORPIONS REVISITED. The album includes re-recorded versions of his era Scorpions songs, and it became a great success. I met a good-humored Roth in Helsinki in October. We discussed, of course, about the Scorpions but also other things such as Roth’s upcoming solo album and ongoing changes in the world of music. The story continues…
Joining with founding members: legendary guitar virtuoso, MICHAEL ANGELO BATIO, and glass-shattering vocalist, JIM GILLETTE, is one of today’s most respected and revered metal drummer’s, CHRIS ADLER (Lamb of God).

“I’m not sure who keeps giving my phone number to the most talented musicians on the planet but, I couldn’t be more thrilled! I used to wonder what a metal band would sound like with all the cheat codes unlocked and well, I don’t wonder about that anymore. I’m blown away by the modern sound and groove in the material. The chaos has been harnessed and it’s incredibly heavy.” ADLER said.
States BATIO: “I can’t wait to get onstage with these guys! Inspirational is an understatement.”
“I’m honored to be surrounded by such insanely talented musicians. I mean, Michael and Chris are the best of the best. So yeah, it’s very exciting, humbling and even a little intimidating. To be honest, I’m less intimidated when I get in the ring with a 300-pound monster that wants to tear my head off!” added GILLETTE.
NITRO is currently writing and is scheduled to start recording next month with GRAMMY-winning producer, JOSH WILBUR (Lamb of God, Avenged Sevenfold, KORN, Megadeth, Hatebreed and many more). An anticipated release is Spring of 2017 with a world tour to follow.

The second round of bands confirmed for BA 2017 is here! This time lets start with Swedish OPETH, unique metal act combining heavy riffs and prog elements for more than 20 years. British SIKTH will finally come to festival to play their influental music to the djent movement within progressive metal.
The other bands also do not need any special introduction: Greek gothic black metal matadors ROTTING CHRIST or American PRONG playing groovy crossover thrash.
Polish tech death metal DECAPITATED announced a special set to 20th anniversary. Another death metal act on the bill DESERTED FEAR is raging fierce take on the genre. Norwegian TSJUDER is known best for their relentless, aggressive approach to Black Metal. American COUGH is bringing their devastating heavy sludge/doom.
Three acts will offer uncompromising core music: THE AMITY AFFLICTION and CHELSEA GRIN and WHILE SHE SLEEPS. While Australians THE AMITY AFFLICTION will bring metalcore with post-metal elements, American CHELSEA GRIN will serve killing deathcore. The last is British metalcore WHILE SHE SLEEPS, powerful live band and one of the most promising band of the genre.
Last but not least on the bill are German respected industrial veterans KMFDM and American experimental music collective WREKMEISTER HARMONIES that combines drone and postrock elements.

Jack Russell’s Great White represents the next phase of a legacy. On January 27, 2017, Frontiers Music Srl will lay the framework for this new phase with the release of “He Saw it Comin'”.
Today, Jack Russell’s Great White unveils the first single from their forthcoming album. Listen to the track “Blame It On The Night” HERE.
“Most of the material I have written in my life has been autobiographical, this song is one of the exceptions. The song was written for and about my wife’s childhood. Because of the subject and the feelings I have for my wife this was a very difficult song to sing. But I believe that the topic is an important one to bring into the light and out of the shadows, says Jack Russell about “Blame It On The Night”.
Rather than look backwards and merely attempt to relive the multi-platinum hard rock entity’s storied origins, Jack Russell set his sights on the future. In December 2011, Jack Russell’s Great White first bared its teeth. Since its inception, the frontman welcomed back longtime bassist and friend Tony Montana-this time as a guitar player and keyboardist- along with lead guitarist Robby Lochner and drummer Dicki Fliszar. Now, this group has a sharp, soaring and slick new album ready, boasting the bluesy hard rock stomp that made Russell and Montana stars in the first place.
“It’s a powerful band,” Russell proclaims. “The music comes across very dynamically. It’s what I always wanted it to be. Tony was a catalyst for moving forward. I was never as close to him as I am now. We never had the opportunity to write music together before. I also never knew he played guitar. When I first heard him, I nearly fell of my chair. He’s my co-pilot. He’s one of my best friends. I wish we would’ve been this close back in the day.”
“It’s natural for all of us,” adds Montana. “There’s a solid chemistry, and we’re having a lot of fun.”
Along with Lochner and Fliszar and the more recent addition of Dan McNay on bass, these musicians hit the studio to cut their official full-length debut. It taps into the bluesy bombast and heavy energy of Russell’s celebrated material, but it’s a distinctly modern metallic monster.
“We want the new material to blow people’s ears back,” Russell goes on. “It has the elements of the best Great White music ever written, but there’s an edge. Tony brings that validity, while Robby, Dan and Dicki add a new life. It’s going to surprise people.”
Montana agrees, “It’s got the classic sound. The first element is Jack’s voice. No other band sounds like this one ever did or does now. When I was 17-years-old, I remember walking around the UCLA campus listening to the band’s first EP. I was a fan before I ever joined the band. We’re going to maintain that same integrity going forward.”
That integrity became forged over nearly thirty years. In 1984, Great White broke out of the Los Angeles scene with its self-titled debut followed by seismic platinum-selling outings such as 1987’s “Once Bitten…” and 1989’s “…Twice Shy”. Selling over 8 million copies worldwide, they stood out as tried-and-true rock stalwarts into the 21st century until 2011, when Russell went on to form Jack Russell’s Great White.
Ultimately, the new music is for the millions of fans who stuck by Russell all these years. It’s everything they’ve been waiting for and more.
“He Saw it Comin” Track Listing:
1. Sign Of The Times
2. She Moves Me

This line up for this gig was highly anticipated. It’s such a honour too be able to see bands of this stature play a venue like this. The O2 is one of the largest venues in England and Alter Bridge have without a doubt earned the headline spot they’ve got tonight. Luckily for the crowds of people waiting, the venue is under cover, as the weather outside is grimly cold. Read the rest of this entry »
A few weeks ago, Black Star Riders announced their third studio album, Heavy Fire, set for release via Nuclear Blast Entertainment on February 3rd, 2017. The band has now revealed the first video trailer in which frontman Ricky Warwick explains the writing process behind the forthcoming album and looks forward to the band’s March 2017 UK tour:
When discussing the writing of Heavy Fire, Warwick comments: “Myself and Damon Johnson work really well together. We went to our manager’s house in Southern California – he was away for a week so Damon flew in from Nashville and I drove down from my place in LA and we hung out there for a week. I brought in a bunch of ideas and lyrics and Damon brought in some stuff too. By the end of the four or five days we had ten or twelve solid songs together, which was great. We work very quickly together because we’re always very well prepared and we’re always writing individually.”
The band’s previous album, The Killer Instinct, was released in 2015 to widespread critical acclaim and went on to score multiple radio playlists. A solid year of worldwide touring culminated in December 2015 in an UK arena tour alongside Def Leppard and Whitesnake.
2016 saw the band return to the studio with The Killer Instinct’s producer Nick Raskulinecz (Rush, The Foo Fighters, Mastodon), at his studio just outside Nashville. The resultant album is Black Star Riders’ most accomplished work to date. From the immediate riffs of album opener Heavy Fire to the instant hooks of first single “When The Night Comes In,” from the dirty bass groove of “Thinking About You Could Get Me Killed” to the familiar and trademark dual guitars of Gorham and Johnson on “Testify Or Say Goodbye,” this is an album that will further cement BSR’s reputation as one of the world premiere rock acts.
“Angst, passion, power, glory, love, truth, lies, loyalty, questions that begged to be answered. There’s a guitar army coming and it’s bringing the “Heavy Fire.” – Ricky Warwick (vocals), Black Star Riders.
“Not many new bands get to record three albums these days. Without doubt this is BSR’S best album so far. We had a great time recording it and can’t wait to play the new songs live on tour in March.” - Scott Gorham (guitars), Black Star Riders
Following on from their critically acclaimed albums All Hell Breaks Loose and The Killer Instinct which have paved the way for Black Star Riders to be recognized as a power force in the modern day of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Heavy Fire will be once again released by Nuclear Blast Entertainment. The band have also brought in PledgeMusic, one of the most innovative and successful platforms of the modern music world, to give fans extra special product and experiences to go along with the album’s release.

The city of Leeds is one with a very long and fruitful history. It is also a haven for many a great artist or musician, and is home to one of the finest universities in the United Kingdom. A univeristy home to one of the best regarded day festivals: Damnation.
You may be familiar with Vancouver, BC’s TERRIFIER as the band has been setting their scene ablaze sharing the stage with the likes of Havok, Destruction, Exmortus, Anvil, 3 Inches of blood, Holy Grail, Dismembered, Suffocation, Into Eternity, Striker, Ghost Ship Octaivius, Crowbar, Cauldron, Cryptopsy and Battlecross. The thrashers recently signed to TEST YOUR METAL RECORDS and will be releasing their third recording and second album ‘Weapons of Thrash Destruction’, a nine track mosher set for release on January 20, 2017 to follow their 2013 EP ‘Metal or Death’ and 2012 full-length ‘Destroyers of the Faith’.
But before it drops… we at Metal-Rules.com are ready to electrify and bring the mosh pit alive with the exclusive premiere of their first single ‘Reanimator’.
TERRIFIER vocalist Chase Thibodeau had this to say about the track.
“‘Reanimator’ is the second track we wrote for our up and coming album “Weapons of Thrash Destruction”. It’s based on the classic horror movie Re-animator. The song takes the listener further into our evolving sound to give them a bludgeoning assault from the first note to the last.”
David T. Chastain and Leather Leone performed live together for the first time in over 25 years on October 8th at Bogart’s in Cincinnati, Ohio. This special performance was shot on video along with the CJSS ‘Last Show on Planet Earth 2’ concert.
David says, “We are posting these videos so the fans around the world who couldn’t make the show will have access to them for free and before they get bootlegged. We made sure to include CHASTAIN favorites such as “Ruler of the Wasteland,” “Angel of Mercy” and “For Those Who Dare” as well as CJSS fan favorites “World Gone Mad” and “Metal Forever.” This was just a 4 camera video shoot and the audio is basically a direct off the soundboard mix. Due to a scheduling conflict we were only able to rehearse with Leather one night before the show so there are a few mistakes here and there. However all things considered it is a good portrayal of the show. We just felt it was important to document this event.”
Legendary Canadian thrash/heavy metal masters Annihilator have lacerated many senses over the years with their supreme, aggressive metal mastery, and on January, 27th, 2017, their legion of loyal fans can look forward to a series of fresh sensory experiences as Annihilator proudly present Triple Threat, a three-disc collection of Annihilator’s music in a trio of very different scenarios.
The main disc comprises a set of Annihilator’s classics performed acoustically, with band leader/guitarist/ songwriter and vocalist Jeff Waters bringing together band members Aaron Homma and Rich Hinks, Vancouver BC drummer and friend Marc LaFrance plus Ottawa session player Pat Robillard.
Recorded and mixed by Waters, this quintet recorded everything live, off the floor and in single takes at Watersound Studios in Dunrobin, Canada during late May and early June, 2016, giving Waters one of the most challenging, satisfying and perhaps ‘electric’ creative moments in his career.
The second disc will feature Annihilator’s vicious set from the 2016 Bang Your Head Festival, a set which illustrates the very best of what Annihilator is known for –tight, sharp, technically-excellent and melodic thrash metal music. It will also contain some exclusive inside-Annihilator off-stage perspective, which captures further elements, flavours and detail of the band which fans will flip over.
“This was one of the coolest things I have done in my long career. Having 5 people in a room, from all different backgrounds and talents, coming together to play songs from the past and to try to sound like we are one but totally live and with feel. This was one of the biggest challenges that Annihilator has faced, musically.
Enjoy… we sure love this one.” – Jeff Waters, Annihilator
Triple Threat will be available as DVD/2CDs, Blu-Ray/2CDs, a 2CD audio-only and digital download.
The BluRay and DVD visual content is split in 3 parts:
Chapter I – Annihilator Un-Plugged: The Watersound Studios Sessions (62 mins)
Chapter II – Annihilator Live at the BANG YOUR HEAD Festival (45 mins)
Chapter III – ANNIHILATOR: Summer Mini-Documentary 2016 (50 mins)
Plus Bonus Video Chapters: “Jeff’s Commentary On The Acoustic Songs” and “Jeff Answers Fan Questions”.
“Annihilator really is Canada’s thrash band; kind of an extension of the Big Four. We have Sepultura in the South, we have Annihilator to the North. I love Jeff, I love the band, I love his playing. His compositions are terrific. Annihilator rules.”
David Ellefson, Megadeth
