MARTIN POPOFF’s Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers: The Rise of Motörhead, signing, packing, mailing… nöw!

March 30th, 2017
by Celtic Bob

As the back cover (in part) says, this is the first book to celebrate the classic-era Motörhead lineup of Lemmy Kilmister, Fast Eddie Clarke and Philthy Phil “Animal” Taylor.

Through interviews with all of the principle troublemakers, Martin Popoff, author of 62 books on heavy metal, celebrates, over the course of the book’s action-packed 260 pages the formation of Motörhead in 1975, and, in detail, the records that made them legends, namely Motörhead, Overkill, Bomber, Ace of Spades, No Sleep ‘til Hammersmith and Iron Fist, followed by an epilogue that brings the story up to date.

Eminently quotable, Motörhead come to life in this book as bad luck bad boys incapable of running their lives right, save for Fast Eddie who is charged with holding the thing together against all odds doused in drink and drugs, most notably speed.

Within the context of the book, Popoff also examines the heady heavy metal climate of the times exploding into what was known as the New Wave of Heavy Metal, including Motörhead’s unique position in the scene as both originators and bridge band to the punks, most notably The Damned.

A first-hand account in Popoff’s dependable style, Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers includes interview footage from Brian Robertson Mikkey Dee, Phil Campbell and the band’s manager at the time Doug Smith as well as members of Hawkwind, Angel Witch, Girlschool, Tank and Twisted Sister.

And of course, prominent are the many highlights from Martin’s many chats over the years with Fast Eddie, Phil and Lemmy, the latter two of which died after Martin had finished the manuscript, requiring a last-minute update due to their shocking demises.

Price for Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers including shipping:
US orders: $33.00 US funds
Int’l orders (all books go air): $38.00 US funds
Canadian orders: $37.00 Cdn. funds

Ask me if you’d prefer a PayPal invoice (please indicate what country you are in), or just do yer usual and direct funds to

Or mail payment (personal check in US funds, cash, or INTERNATIONAL money order), to: Martin Popoff, P.O. Box 65208, 358 Danforth Ave., Toronto, Ontario, Canada M4K 2Z2

Sweet postage savings to be had for multiple orders (or two of pretty much anything—long story, ask me!), especially for US and Canadian orders. Email me at with any further questions, and see for descriptions, cover art and ordering info for my other 35 or so books that I have available for autographin’ and shippin’.  Note: this will not be at my website for a good ten days, but I have the books now and am shipping them this week.

Kam Lee is one of the Godfathers of Death Metal , right up there with Chuck Schuldiner. As a member of Mantas, Death, and Massacre, Kam put his stamp on extreme metal by creating the growling Death Metal vocal style that has stood the test of time, influencing legions of bands. Kam and guitarist Rick Rozz have recently re-formed Massacre (as Massacre X) and are planning a tour and new material. I was lucky enough to have a chat with Kam over the phone about Death Metal history, Massacre X, and his plans to create a documentary.

by EvilG

Ice-T’s BODY COUNT just launched the new track, “Black Hoodie,” via this explosive music video directed by @TreachTribe, so click on the link below now to check it out. The aforementioned song is also now an instant-grat track downloadable immediately upon pre-ordering the amazing, new album, Bloodlust, now at

“Black Hoodie” Official Music Video

Ice-T states: “This type of thing happens everyday and nobody marches or it never makes the news. The video speaks for itself.”

Official Facebook –

Official Website – (all physical pre-order bundles can be purchased here)

Ice-T and co-founder/lead guitarist Ernie C have perfected their mix of thrash, punk and bottom heavy doom across five albums, hitting a zenith with the unstoppable Manslaughter. They embody the monumental Southern California tradition of street born punk bands like Suicidal Tendencies combined with the aggressive aural napalm of Slayer. This is abrasive, in-your-face heavy metal at its very finest.

poison-logo.jpgDrummer Rikki Rockett discussed the making of Poison’s debut album, Look What the Cat Dragged In on this week’s episode of the Decibel Geek podcast.

In an interview recorded on his tour bus during a Devil City Angels stop in Nashville, Rockett reflected on the early days of Poison as they made a leap the transition from their home in Mechanicsburg, PA to Hollywood in the early 1980’s.

“I was really scared. I lived in the same house until I was 22 years old. All of a sudden, BAM, I’m in a fuckin’ one bedroom in the hardcore part of Hollywood. The first week we’re seeing people get their asses kicked out front. I remember this pimp was literally smacking the hell out of his ho across the street. We went down the steps. I had a Pearl drum cymbal stand. I’m like “Let’s just fuck this motherfucker up”, you know what I mean? We went down and the guy comes around with a knife this fuckin’ big and we’re like “Maybe we shouldn’t get involved (laughs)”

Poison quickly built a reputation as a top live act on the Sunset Strip; boasting a glam look and songs that described a life of excess. When asked about how accurate the lyrical content was at the time, Rockett said: “We didn’t have any money. We didn’t have beautiful cars. We didn’t have anything. So, we wrote about it like we did. A lot of times when people have it in their life, they write about how downtrodden they are. But when you really don’t have anything, you write about how wonderful it could be.  Unfortunately, we couldn’t go out and party every night.  Later, that happened because we were, like, fulfilling our dreams. But when we were writing those songs, they were wish lists.”

Original guitarist, Matt Smith, quickly left the band to return to Pennsylvania to start a family.  The audition process of replacing Smith would see the competition narrowed to two players; CC DeVille and Slash. “Slash, we had known. He was in Hollywood Rose….We all liked him. He came and worked on some songs with us but we continued to audition people even though he was a frontrunner…We didn’t want, like, a hotshot Yngwie guy. We wanted an East Coast guy. And then CC auditioned and he just made more sense than Slash did. So, it was a tough decision because we all liked Slash. Slash was really pissed off about it. He was pissed. He was like “What the fuck you guys?”…So there was that rivalry between Poison and Guns n’ Roses because of that, I think for a long time you know?”
One thing that definitely helped DeVille’s chances was a song he brought to the audition from his previous band, The Screaming Mimis. That song was ‘Talk Dirty to Me.’

According to Rikki, “It was a different feel… I don’t want to say it was a different song; that it would be totally unrecognizable but it didn’t sound the same.”
Producer Rick Browde was previously associated with DeVille and was tapped to helm the album. Early on, tensions flared, “CC had some tie-in with him….We didn’t have much money and he was willing to do it. And he was a Nazi in there, he really was. When we recorded ‘Talk Dirty to Me’, we actually had kicked him out by then. We did not part happily….Talk Dirty to Me was recorded twice. It was really stiff; the way he wanted it.”

As it’s well-known by now, Poison has had a well-publicized tension between certain members. When asked for a cause, Rikki responds, “You combine success and drugs and pressure and all sorts of things and the lid can come off in a minute….You’re in each other’s space all the time and one person does stuff that just annoys you, it’s the little shit…Look at these things in jail. People go to jail and they’ll fuckin’ beat the fuck out of each other over a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. What do you call it, shank a person?…I mean, I’ve wanted to shank everybody in this band! (laughs)”
Asked about the trend of rock stars today being more relatable, Rockett doesn’t agree with it, “Everybody’s like “Aw shucks” about it. We were unabashedly about it. We loved the fuckin’ pageantry of it. I didn’t grow up thinking “I wanna be a rock star so I can have a Porsche. I woke everyday wanting to be a rock star so I can have a big drum kit and a big PA. That’s what the fuck I wanted. I’d go see a concert and at the end of the night I was like “Man, those guys are getting laid right now.”  I want that shit. You know what I mean?”

The episode featuring Rikki Rockett can be downloaded/streamed  below.

IRON MAIDEN Completing the collection – Vinyl reissues coming this summer

March 24th, 2017
by Celtic Bob

Completing the collection! No Prayer through to Final Frontier album reissues coming this summer – all on black vinyl!

Parlophone Records will follow 2014’s reissue of the first eight IRON MAIDEN albums, which spanned the 1980s, with twelve brand new pressings of albums from the period 1990-2015 in heavyweight 180g black vinyl.

Unlike the 1980’s reissues which were cut from the original analogue master tapes, the audio on these releases has been cut from the high resolution remasters of 2015 when the Maiden catalogue was digitally upgraded. They will be packaged in identical artwork to the initial vinyl releases.

The records will be released chronologically across a three month period:

May 19th: No Prayer For The Dying / Fear Of The Dark / The X Factor / Virtual XI

(Pre-order available now: Collectors Box | No Prayer For The Dying | Fear Of The Dark | X Factor | Virtual XI)

June 23rd: Brave New World / Rock In Rio (Live) / Dance Of Death / A Matter Of Life And Death

July 21st: Death On The Road (Live) / Flight 666 (Live) / The Final Frontier / En Vivo! (Live)

As a bonus, the first two albums (No Prayer For The Dying & Fear Of The Dark) will also be made available in an exclusive Collector’s Box sized to house all 12 albums with additional space for fans to insert the latest Maiden studio album The Book Of Souls, which was released on triple black vinyl in 2015. The Collector’s Box will be a strictly limited edition and available while stocks last.

These high quality, black vinyls comprised of eight studio albums together with a specially selected choice of four live recordings from this period, completes the IRON MAIDEN album reissues series and offers Maiden fans the opportunity to own the band’s entire studio album legacy on vinyl simultaneously for the very first time.

March 24th, 2017
by Celtic Bob

Under their belt, Warrant has eight million records sold worldwide, two Top Ten Billboard albums, five Top 40 Billboard hits, five #1 MTV videos…the list goes on and on. Now, six years after the release of “Rockaholic,” the album that relaunched the band as a force to be reckoned with in the 21st Century, Warrant returns with another slab of muscular hard rock, aptly titled “Louder Harder Faster”, to be released on Frontiers Music Srl on May 12th.

Today the first single from “Louder Harder Faster” has been made available for streaming.

“Louder Harder Faster” can be pre-ordered here: and at the links below.  Digital pre-orders include instant downloads of “Only Broken Heart”.

Google Play:

With a line-up featuring original members, Erik Turner, Jerry Dixon, Joey Allen, and Steven Sweet along with singer Robert Mason (Lynch Mob, Cry of Love), Warrant are now stronger than ever. Mason’s vocals remain a breath of fresh air and his swagger on the songs gives new life and a bright future to the band. With production handled by Foreigner and ex-Dokken bass player Jeff Pilson (Last In Line, Starship, Adler’s Appetite, etc.). Warrant is sounding tighter and playing better than ever before. “Louder Harder Faster”, true to the band’s roots, is full of rockers with some classic ballads thrown in and sure to send their faithful fans into a frenzy.

Warrant was one of the most popular and successful rock bands to emerge out of Hollywood, CA in the late 80’s and early 90’s. The band was formed in the early 80’s by Erik Turner and Jerry Dixon. In 1989, Warrant released their classic debut “Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich”, which immediately entered the charts and launched the hit singles “Down Boys,” “Sometimes She Cries”, and “Heaven”, which climbed up to number two on the US charts. With extensive touring for DRFSR, sales exceeded 2 million records in the US only.

In the summer of 1990, their second album “Cherry Pie”was released. The album turned out to be an even bigger success, featuring the Top Ten hits “I Saw Red”, Uncle Toms Cabin and the rock anthem “Cherry Pie”, which received massive airplay on MTV and continues to get millions of plays on streaming services and YouTube to this very day.

Warrant’s signature style of rock is catchy, very melodic, and remains the band’s calling card. The band is fired up and more inspired than ever musically! The band will be out touring in support of “Louder Harder Faster”, so be sure to catch them when they hit your town!

Hit the Lights: The Birth of Thrash By MARTIN POPOFF

March 23rd, 2017
by Celtic Bob

In the logical follow-up to Popoff’s celebrated New Wave of British Heavy Metal trilogy (Smokin’ Valves, Wheels of Steel and This Means War), Martin now brings us Hit the Lights: The Birth of Thrash, attacking heavy metal’s next wave of faster, heavier, angrier sounds, with a geographical shift in the axis to San Francisco and Los Angeles, with a bit of New York, Germany and Canada thrown in for good measure.

image002.jpgUtilizing his celebrated oral history method—rich with detailed chronological entries to frame the story—Popoff executes a slow and ruminating burn through 1981, 1982 and the first half of 1983, culminating in the release of Kill ‘em All, the landmark Metallica album widely considered to be the first thrash metal record proper.

Come join Martin, along with dozens of his old school headbanging buddies (including multiple members from thrash’s big four and beyond), as they together tell the tale of thrash’s forging from the influence of punk, ‘70s metal and the NWOBHM. Venom, Anvil, Exciter, Raven, Exodus, Anthrax, Metallica… they’re all here and willing to explain candidly and at length how and why metal past the implosion of the NWOBHM suddenly found itself barreling down the tracks at breakneck speed.

Price for Hit the Lights including shipping:
US orders: $34.00 US funds
Int’l orders (all books go air): $39.00 US funds

BLACK LABEL SOCIETY Guitarist DARIO LORINA Releases Video For ‘Death Grip Tribulations’ Title Track

March 22nd, 2017
by Celtic Bob

Dario Lorina’s new instrumental album DEATH GRIP TRIBULATIONS is out NOW via Shrapnel Records!

The Kaster Troy-directed video for the song “Death Grip Tribulations” from BLACK LABEL SOCIETY guitarist Dario Lorina can be seen below. The track is the title cut of Lorina’s second instrumental album, which was released in February via Shrapnel Records, known for discovering and recording guitarists of extraordinary ability.

Dario’s new record is a powerful show of songwriting infused with shred guitar, vintage modern influence, and a richly musical band consisting of longtime musical partner Dan “D.C.” Conway (drums), BLACK LABEL SOCIETY bandmates John “J.D.” DeServio (bass) and Jeff Fabb (drums), along with former LIZZY BORDEN bandmate Marten Andersson (bass). It also features a song with MOTÖRHEAD guitarist Phil Campbell. Engineered and mixed by Fred Archambault, known for his work with ALICE COOPER and AVENGED SEVENFOLD, among others, this effort is a sheer embodiment of this high caliber guitarist’s vast skill set.

Says Shrapnel’s Mike Varney: “‘Death Grip Tribulations’ makes it clear that Dario Lorina has become a force to be reckoned with, as at twenty-seven years of age, he draws from experience far beyond his years, creating a collection of songs built on forceful rhythms, strong melodies and an arsenal of advanced guitar chops.”

Lorina began his professional career in 2006 at age 16 as the touring guitarist with the late Jani Lane (ex-WARRANT). At age 19, he joined veteran metal act LIZZY BORDEN, whom he toured with for four years.

Dario released his first instrumental record on Shrapnel in September 2013. In January 2014, he joined BLACK LABEL SOCIETY and has since been touring worldwide with Zakk Wylde, performing on both guitar and keys, most recently on Wylde’s “Book Of Shadows II” tour.
