ICED EARTH forced to cancel summer’s festivals and headline shows

Iced Earth

Iced Earth, Underworld, 20-12-12

The below message was posted by Jon Schaffer today:

“It is with sincere apologies that I write to inform you all that ICED EARTH is forced to cancel this summer’s festivals and headline shows.

As many of you know, I underwent surgery on my neck in the year 2000, due to an onstage injury that occurred in 1996. Since that time, I have battled with this problem, and it has begun to accelerate in the past several months, causing additional issues that can no longer be ignored.

In February, while on tour in Europe, I underwent highly specialized treatment in Germany from a doctor who has helped, among many others, Tony Iommi and Eddie Van Halen. This treatment helped sustain my ability to perform so that we could complete our Worldwide Plagues Tour.

However, I am now forced to take further, more invasive action sooner than I intended in order to maintain my overall health.
Surgery was originally planned to take place in September during our break, but I have now been advised to have the procedure completed sooner rather than later.

As much as it pains me and everyone else in our camp to have to cancel these dates, this is something that cannot be put aside any longer.

Once the surgery and recovery are completed, we will be back to work – healthy, strong, and ready to bring the metal to you, our fans.

Best wishes to you all,
Jon Schaffer”

Steelfest has carved its immortal marks onto the metal festival map in Finland and managed to pull through these hard times whereas other festivals have collapsed. An extremely strong line-up offered killer bands from the front lines of the death/black metal genre. Even though the festival is kind of small, it has an intimate feel passionate towards extreme metal. Metal bangers have also found the festival as the fest was completely sold out. Over 3000 maniacs visited the fest during the weekend, enjoying the metal at its best. Hail! The Metal-Rules.com team spent the whole weekend at Steelfest, witnessing killer bands…

Anathema interview with Danny Cavanagh

Interview by Ashlinn Nash

Anathema

Meeting a musical idol can be quite a daunting task, however if they are as humble and more importantly as down to earth as Danny Cavanagh, whose enthusiastic personality is one that can put you at ease straight away.

The Energetic front man and founding member of the Liverpool quintet, brings a whole breath of talent with him, ranging from early works such as; The Silent Enigma [1995], A fine day to exit [2001] and more recently Weather Systems [2012].

It’s no wonder that talk quickly turns to the newest album released on the 9th June 2014  - Distant Satellites.

Metal-Rules.com Does SXSW 2014

SXSW-2014

By Robert Williams

Live footage courtesy of Sandra Torres

The SXSW festival merges music, film, art and interactive showcases from around the world and is held every year in the month of March in Austin, Texas. For one week there are thousands of bands performing at any number of venues in downtown Austin. The streets are jam packed with thrill seekers, industry folks, journalists, tourists and pedicabs. In years past we have witnessed monolithic megastar headlining acts like Metallica, Motorhead and Voivod perform at SXSW, not to mention upcoming lesser known acts like 1349, Steel Panther, Crashdiet and Sabaton who all went on to establish themselves as forces to be reckoned with. Having attended the SXSW festival for years I was going in with the knowledge that you never really know what to expect as the lineup is usually a mixed bag of sorts but 2014 will truly be remembered as the year of the underdogs as there really were no giant marquee level showcasing metal acts at this year’s SXSW festival with a rabid, cult following to speak of. From the bands perspective their performance could be considered a “make or break” situation, a chance to prove themselves on foreign soil or impress the likes of prospective record labels, for the fans it was both mysterious as it was enjoyable witnessing some leaner, greener, less established metal acts perform. This year we have compiled some in-concert showcase footage from the likes of Primitive Man, Obliteration, Nothing, Christian Mistress, Kadavar and Orchid.

Ten Thousand Strong

TEN THOUSAND STRONG

by EVILG
(Founder, Owner, President, CEO and King Ov Hell of Metal-Rules.com)

It’s absolutely wild to think that Metal Rules has been around for 19 years and that next year is our 20th anniversary! When this all started, I had no idea that it would be around nearly two decades later and that at 19 years in, we’d be celebrating our 10,000th review! It has gotten to this point not just because of my single-mindedness of purpose, but because of the hard work of our dedicated staff, both current and past, and because of people like you who continue to pop by to check out our reviews, interviews, live reviews, etc. For the many years you’ve supported us, and for the countless hours our staff has put in to bring you new content, I want to send out a heartfelt thank you!!!

I had to be nudged to commemorate and acknowledge this 10,000 review thing, as I am not one who feels comfortable boasting , I’d rather just keep things rolling and work towards the next 10,000 reviews. On that front, I chose the album for the 10,000th review based on some simple criteria. It had to be for something that I felt represents the site and REAL heavy metal perfectly. As such, it also had to be something that meant something to me personally. That album is SCREAMING FOR VENGEANCE by the Metal Gods, Judas Priest!  After the comparatively lackluster POINT OF ENTRY, the band came back with the album that really broke them into the North American market and clearly left an impact upon me for life.

Check HERE to read the review for this timeless classic.

Judas Priest - Screaming For Vengeance

Judas Priest – Screaming For Vengeance

Note from JP, Managing Editor

Do not let EvilG’s pleasantries and false modesty above fool you.  He is a tyrannical overlord who will stop at nothing. His goal is total global domination and rules with an iron fist in a velvet glove.  His will shall not be denied. He wishes unholy death and everlasting pain on the enemies of true Metal.  I am but his humble servant and he has allowed me to speak about this milestone.

I had the evil delight of joining the MR Staff back in 1999 or so.  I’ve watched our site grow and grow like an evil Metal virus, spreading the disease across the globe.  By reaching the milestone of 10,000 reviews we have been preaching the cause of Metal  by supporting one album, one DVD, one book at a time as brick by brick we built our empire.  Not only have we written 10,000 lessons in violence, we have written over 1000 interviews and almost 900 concert reviews.  Over our almost  two decades of aggression we are now of the worlds largest and longest running Heavy Metal webzines.   We could not have done this without the ruthless and relentless enslavement of an army of talented writers, photographers, web-designers, transcribers, and editors.  These dark minions have spread across the globe like a black plague sweeping the land and entrenching themselves into the  glorious nations of Canada, America, England, Ireland, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Greece, India, and Australia reporting back to EvilG about the war on false music that rages everyday. These metal warriors bring you the information from the trenches and front lines every day, concerts, interviews, and of course reviews.

We most acknowledge the hard work and generosity of those supporters and people friendly to our eternal cause; the promoters, agents,  band managers, record company people, publicists, PR people, who have helped our endless crusade, we salute you.   Support them as they support us.  Lastly, we thank you, the reader.  Without, you, your support, your comments, your love letters (and hate mail), buying our merchandise and visiting us every day, we would not be where we are today.  Don’t forget to enter our Ten Thousand Strong contest as a tiny thank you to our loyal readers. Hail and kill.

Review by JP

For Metal shows, The Republik is not bad but not great.  It has good bars, good merch area, coat check etc… and the venue is always metal friendly.  However the sight lines are pretty poor with lots  of support poles obstructing views on the three-tier design and a tiny stage.  I’ve seen dozens and dozens of shows here over the years in this club that holds several hundred, so it was familiar place for a Friday night gig.   I must admit my enthusiasm was a little subdued as I have seen Kataklysm many times over the years but I was still looking forward to the gig. -1

There are half a dozen local bars that are Metal-friendly and Lord Nelson’s is one of them.  It was a warm Friday night as I headed down to the IronStorm CD release party.   In a busy city of 1 million people and over 75 active Metal bands on almost any given night there is a local show.  It is hard to make it to all of them but I make a point of trying to get out and support the locals especially as CD release parties!  This one was kind of unique with two bands from Edmonton (IRonstorm/Samandriel) , Bloodreich from High River and local thrashers, Shrapnal. ACE FREHLEY Debuts New Single “Gimme A Feelin’”

May 30th, 2014
by Celtic Bob

8a2a6518-b84f-46ac-8628-b4dc3c1141bb

Founding KISS guitarist and 2014 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee ACE FREHLEY has debuted an all new single titled “Gimme a Feelin’” exclusively through Rolling Stone today. The new effort serves as the first single from his all new LP SPACE INVADER slated for a summer release via eOne Music.

“Gimme a Feelin’” is available for purchase on iTunes immediately and Space Invader is available for pre-order via Amazon.

Frehley recently announced that he had tapped long time friend and artist Ken Kelly to create the album cover for his upcoming LP. Kelly, who created the iconic cover art for two of KISS’s best selling LPS, Destroyer (1976) and Love Gun (1977), says,  “It was very exciting when I was approached with the idea of doing an album cover for Ace.” Ken Kelly is also widely known for his paintings in the sword and sorcery and heroic fantasy sub genres, most notably for the Conan the Barbarian novels. He continues, “I had spoken to Ace on a few occasions about the possibility, so I was delighted when it actually happened.”

Ace Frehley himself comments, ”I’ve been talking with Ken Kelly since 2007 about painting a CD Cover for me and it has finally happened! I couldn’t be more excited about the new Space Invader cover and the music behind it is also going to rock your world!”

With nearly 35 years between projects, KISS fans will surely be excited about this long-time duo working together again. Kelly concludes, “I am very pleased with the results and proud to play a part of Ace’s continuing successful career!”
ACE FREHLEY will release SPACE INVADER, his first new solo album in five years, via Entertainment One Music (eOne Music) this summer. The album will include at least nine brand new original songs along with “Gimme a Feelin’” as well as a cover of Steve Miller’s “The Joker.”

Widely known as the original “Space Ace” and founding guitarist for 16 cumulative years (over 2 tenures) of the multi platinum selling rock band KISS, Frehley is demonstrably the most popular original member.  In addition to having the best selling solo album career (vintage or current) among the original foursome, Frehley’s self titled Ace Frehley, released in 1978, went on to sell over one million copies, producing the only Top 40 single, “New York Groove,” from any of the legendary KISS solo albums; (peaking at #13).   The massive hit was most recently featured in an episode of cult show Entourage and was also KISS’ second best selling download in 2012, besting such KISS Army anthems as “I Was Made For Lovin’ You,” “Beth” and “Calling Dr. Love” even after 36 years.

Since departing from KISS, Frehley went on to release four more solo albums and one live EP including his most recent effort, Anomaly in 2009, which debuted at #27 on the Billboard Top 200 chart and received a welcoming response among critics. “’Anomaly’ shows why many rock and metal guitarists list ‘Space Ace’ as a prime six-string influence,” said Rolling Stone.

You can catch Ace Frehley accepting his award at the 29th annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction Ceremony on May 31 at 8pm on HBO.

Interview with Gerre of Tankard

May 29th, 2014

INTERVIEW WITH GERRE OF TANKARD

Tankard is one of the craziest bands the world has faced up ever. I do like always their insistence about continuing to write and record in the same vein: fast metal songs in honour of alcoholGet some answers about the music business and heavy metal from an old hand who can play what he wants along with his beer-fellas and don’t give a s***t. Beer kings’ Gerre caught up with Metal-Rules to talk about the new album, R.I.B. (=Rest In Beer!) their craziness, Gambrinus (the traditional god of Beer), iTunes, Greek metal scene and overall: Beer!
