Job(s) @ Metal Rules: Music Reviews, Attitude

Length of Time with MR: Since December 2008

Brief description of how you came to MR:
I’d been a fan of the site for a while and saw the “help wanted” posting. I submitted some writing samples and the rest is history, deal with it.

Best thing about working for MR:
There are plenty of metal sites on the net that revel in hipster commentary or snarky scene snobbery, but MR was built from and maintained out of a genuine love of METAL. We’ve got an excellent group of contributors and an even better reader base. You guys rule.

Worst thing about working for MR:

Did you not read the above? Not a damn thing.

How/when you first got into metal:
In 1988, my buddy turned me on to a band called Metallica and their new album “…AND JUSTICE FOR ALL.” All bets were off after that, metal was a way of life.  Shortly thereafter I was discovered the death metal scene blowing up in my backyard and it was officially on from there.

Favorite Metal Genre(s):
Doom/stoner, old school death/grind, anything that lives off the beaten path.

Least favorite Metal Genre(s): I have zero tolerance for any music that lacks substance, regardless of genre.  Or anything with a DJ.

First Metal CD ever bought: Anthrax, STATE OF EUPHORIA on cassette – $9.99 at my local K-Mart. I was pissed off because my copy didn’t have the lyrics printed in the booklet; suburban censorship in action. First CD was Black Sabbath’s TYR.  Quit laughing, that album rules – you wish that “13” was half the album that TYR was.

First Metal concert: DIO on the “Lock Up The Wolves” tour, with Yngwie Malmsteen as the opening act.

Band or other music experience:
Nothing serious, but I’d still love to run my own label someday.

Favorite bands/artists:
Harvard research has empirically proven that Black Sabbath is indeed the greatest band to have ever existed. Napalm Death and any 90’s Florida death metal run a very close second.

Favorite Non-Metal bands/artists: Bad Religion is a band that every Metalhead should get to know. Great riffs, crazy energy, and some of the most profound lyrics ever put to paper.

Most underrated bands/artists: Too many to mention, the world is a cruel mistress.  Limp Bizkit can sell millions of records and Scott Weinrich ends up owing Columbia Records 20 grand?  FML.

Favorite album cover: Cathedral’s FOREST OF EQUILIBRIUM.  Every time I look at the artwork, I see something new.  Props to Aaron Stainthorpe and the TURN LOOSE THE SWANS variants.

10 favorite albums (as it stands at this particular moment in time):

1. Black Sabbath – Vol. 4
2. The Obsessed – Lunar Womb
3. King Diamond – Them
4. Cathedral – Forest of Equilibrium
5. Paradise Lost – Gothic
6. Saint Vitus  – V
7. Death – Human
8. Morbid Angel – Blessed are the Sick
9. Napalm Death – Death by Manipulation
10. Candlemass – Live! (ARE YOU READY TO GO DOOM DANCING?!)

Honorable Mention – Darkthrone – A Blaze in the Northern Sky

Hobbies: Good books, good music, good food, good beer. Not always in that order.

Favorite films: Frankenstein/The Bride of Frankenstein, The Exorcist, The Silence of the Lambs, Seven, quality horror films in general.

Favorite books: World War Z by Max Brooks, anything written by Agatha Christie, Stephen King.

Favorite TV shows: The Simpsons, Poirot, Ripper Street, 30 Rock.

Favorite food: Organic whole foods, your grocery store is selling you poison.

Favorite drink: Local Crafts, Samuel Adams seasonal wares, and one Mr. James Beam.

Which songs should be played at your funeral: Darkthrone – “Whiskey Funeral” and/or “Too Old, Too Cold”,  Saint Vitus – “Born Too Late”, The Obsessed – “Endless Circles”.

Final Thoughts: Keep sending those demos and indie releases! I love hearing from new bands who believe in their craft, you guys are what keeps the scene alive.  No guarantees that it’ll get a review, but everything gets a listen.
