Micah Sheveloff, cofounder of The Voodoo Jets, has announced that he will be releasing a collection of piano-based songs called Exhibitionist on July 1st, 2012, featuring a host of guest artists. The first track to be unveiled, a piano and voice cover of Black Sabbath’s Heaven and Hell recorded with Meliah Rage singer Mike Munro, will be released on YouTube to commemorate the second anniversary of the legendary Sabbath singer’s passing. Official release date for the video is May 16th, 2012.

“This rendition of Heaven and Hell has been percolating inside my head since the song was first released over 30 years ago,” Sheveloff said. “I wanted to maintain the dark feel of the track on solo piano, staying away from anything too flowery while layering in some interesting chord changes—and the huge voice of Mike Munro seemed like a perfect fit. I am so thankful we were able to work together.”

Sheveloff’s release contains ten songs encompassing a wide array of mood, tempo and lyrical content. There are eight original compositions plus the Black Sabbath track and another cover duet with legendary Boston singer/songwriter Rick Berlin. Berlin sings Sheveloff’s piano arrangement of Cheap Trick’s Heaven Tonight. “I had several fundamental goals for this record—the first was to sing my own songs, establish my own voice,” Sheveloff explained. “I also wanted an opportunity to mix in the personalities and creative sensibilities of some gifted musicians, and everyone who participated in the project was amazing. I think recording live to 2-inch tape was a big part of it—I kept computers out of the equation until the mixing stage and that process allows great players to shine. I think we captured a lot of genuine human energy on this record,” Sheveloff added.

Drummer Greg Trabandt and bassist Clint Amereno anchored Sheveloff’s original songs, with guitarist Ed Vick sizzling on five tracks. Sheveloff also enlisted noted guitarist Marc Shulman (Suzanne Vega, others) to impart his ethereal style on two of the original songs. “I played a session some years ago and I remember asking the producer—who played those tasty guitar tracks? I’ve been looking for an opportunity to work with Marc ever since,” recalled Sheveloff.

Rounding out the guest list is renowned Vermont guitarist Paul Asbell and vocalist James Mix who teamed up with Connecticut jazz rhythm players Steve Clark (bass) and drummer Paul Mills on a song called Too Many Times.

Exhibitionist is an honest record. The writing is uninhibited; the players played, the singers stepped up to the mic and sung the songs. Recorded at New Haven’s Firehouse 12 using a 9-foot concert Steinway and a vintage Hammond B3, Exhibitionist is meant to be an intimate experience. Release date July 1st, 2012.

Dear Sabbath Fans and Fellow Musicians,

I sincerely regret to inform you that after a final effort to participate in the upcoming Sabbath shows a failure to agree has continued. At this time I have to inform you that I won’t be playing with Black Sabbath at the Birmingham gig dated May 19th, 2012, nor will I be playing at Download on June 10th, 2012. Further, I will not be playing at Lollapalooza on August 3, 2012.

It is with a very sad heart that I bring you this news. I am sincerely passionate in my desire to play with the band, and I’m very, very sorry that it’s fallen to this. This statement is even more painstaking to write, as I was particularly excited to play alongside Tony Iommi after the recent treatments he underwent. I wanted that to become a reality.

To express my thoughts about you, the Sabbath fans, I’m going to speak to you all through an experience my brother James had recently. My brother Jimmy lives in the U.K. When speaking with him a couple of days ago, he told me that an acquaintance had stopped him on the street and confronted him, “is your brother playing Birmingham? What’s going on? I waited in line with my son and paid x amount for the concert tickets.”

The man’s son is a young drummer. He’s going to see Sabbath, and he wants to see Bill Ward play drums. Upon hearing this news, I felt horrible. I couldn’t help feeling some resentment towards the failure to reach an agreement, the failure to remember where we came from, the failure to be as brothers, as we once were. To be clear, I’m not blaming the other guys or finding any faults with them. I would think it can’t be easy for them either, but this situation is just really sad. It’s sad that it’s come to this. “This” will surely leave a mark and be unwelcome to the memory. Hopefully “this” will heal and pass in time.

My heart sank when Jimmy told me about this young boy. I know this boy is going to be disappointed, and I don’t know how to amend it, other than to put my arms around the boy and tell him I love him. Sabbath fans have a voice and a face, to me you’re human, you have families and despair. You have ferocity and emotions and graciousness, and at this moment as far as I’m concerned you are also that young boy in England. I don’t know how to amend my part in these failings other than to put my arms around you and say I love you and let you know I’m very, very sorry.

Throughout this process, which began over a year ago, I have had to stand up for myself time and time again. I have had to stand up for myself and in doing so realize my actions indirectly, although unintentionally, are upsetting and hurting a lot of you. I know in my heart I couldn’t have done these concerts by agreeing the terms suggested. I made a solemn vow after the last European and Ozzfest concerts that I would never again enter into what was, in my opinion, a totally unsatisfactory contract. I have to stand for something, and as painful as it is, I’m doing it.

Earlier in April 2012, I’d been asked to participate “minimally” in the Download festival. I believe I’d been offered no more than three songs to play while another drummer presumably played the rest of the show with Black Sabbath. I was not willing to participate in that offer. I was not prepared to watch another drummer play a Sabbath set, while I was to play only three songs.

I found out about the Birmingham gig on Monday, April 30 through the Internet ad. I was taken aback somewhat by the date, and the fact it was Birmingham. Knowing the “signable” contract negotiations were at best in shreds, I was upset by the idea that the band was going to play Birmingham and play it assumedly without me. I had no prior knowledge of the date and location, and I felt totally excluded. We contacted the representative for Black Sabbath to see if something could be worked out. In the meantime my drum crew and I, along with our US endorsers, finished all the necessary planning for a swift departure to the UK. There wasn’t a whole lot to complete; we’d all been on standby more or less since mid-January 2012. The remaining work in the UK was confirmed done by our European and UK endorsers and we were good to go by Friday, May 4 2012. There were two stress points: firstly, getting an agreement in place, and secondly, getting to England in a timely manner. Jetlag time was taken into account as well as drum practice, a drum practice room in the heart of Birmingham, accommodation, and travel arrangements were all in place to meet with any band rehearsals that may have transpired before the Birmingham show. So far everything that had been arranged was on my dime, but we didn’t move ahead without a realistic confirmation.

Communications between the representative and my lawyer continued through the weekend of May 5 finalizing on Wednesday, May 9. The offer we received on May 9 was, “come to the UK, play for free and see how the first show goes.” I was tempted. Playing for free would not have been a problem for me, but “seeing how the first show goes” left an element of risk which could have affected Download. My ideal thought was to play in full the Birmingham show, in full Download, and in full Lollapalooza.

I had notified the representative that May 10 was my cutoff day in order to have good lead-in time for England. On the night of May 9 I asked for a brief letter to be sent to the representative asking to find out if we were at an end. On the morning of Thursday, May 10, I received a reply in the affirmative. After consulting with my advisors and crew a decision was made to let go and stop.

I can’t prioritize the Sabbath fans making one show more important than the other. I can’t do that. All of you are important. It’s all the gigs or none at all. I can’t come to Birmingham and “see what happens” knowing there is a risk of not being able to play Download or Lollapalooza. Again, for me, it’s all or nothing. I had to say “no” to Birmingham on the principle of wanting to play all the shows. Saying no to Birmingham is very difficult for me. My family grew up in Birmingham. Black Sabbath grew up in Birmingham. It’s still my hometown and I resent having to arrive at such a difficult choice.

Although the statement was made that, “the door is always open” for me, as explained above, walking through that door is not always as easy as it sounds. There are many complicated issues and unseen and unspoken agendas on hand. I can assure you, my criteria for a “signable” contract is based in mindful principles, respectability, and acknowledgement of my history within the band.

I hold no malice or resentment towards the other band members. I love them; I’m tolerant of them; I’m frustrated with them, as they may be with me. My fight has never been with them. I’ll love them forever. In my opinion, nobody wins this time; the band doesn’t win; the fans for an original lineup don’t win. Nobody wins, nobody. Even the ones who thought they did.

I didn’t want to make this decision, but I have to be honest and transparent. This is the statement I didn’t want to write; it’s the last thing I wanted to do. But, I have written it, and now it can go into the universe.

Since Spring of 2011, I’ve waited patiently and hopefully for a signable contract, you know the rest. I stand for the boy in the U.K., for the coming drum student, for all the drummers, who write their parts out and get stiffed on the publishing, I stand with the Sabbath fans chanting “Bill Ward” and asking “why?” and I stand with Tony and Geezer and Ozzy.

On a final note, even though I’m at an end with the upcoming announced concerts, I will remain with an open mind and a position of willingness to negotiate “signable” terms with Sabbath’s representatives in the future.

Stay strong.
Stay safe.

With all my heart and strength, I love you,
Bill Ward

Following on a separate page is a thank you message to some very extraordinary people.

Martin Popoff has released his SECOND Thin Lizzy book, an action-packed sequel to Fighting My Way Back: Thin Lizzy 69-76. It’s called… We Will Be Strong: Thin Lizzy 76-81

As the back cover blurb sez…

In the follow-up to Fighting My Way Back: Thin Lizzy 69-76, Popoff picks up the rough ‘n’ tumble Lizzy saga just as the band stressed and strived for a worthy follow-up to their Jailbreak breakthrough. The result was Johnny The Fox, one of the band’s finest albums, only to be followed by a string of records that placed Lizzy amongst the most revered acts within the realm of hard rock royalty. Bad Reputation, Live And Dangerous, Black Rose, Chinatown… the band’s mid-years catalogue is undeniably superlative, and this is the story of those records inside and out.

As with Pt. 1 of the story, Martin has endeavored to provide reams of fresh interview footage to support his fresh telling of the tale, additionally stuffing the book with photography and memorabilia shots upon most every page.

Immerse yourself in Popoff’s celebrated record-by-record methodology and emerge a rejuvenated Lizzy fan, newly appreciative of the deep album tracks hiding within this singular band’s sparkling, most storied years, tracks that are still being played today by a Thin Lizzy without Phil. The boys are back in town, indeed!

The book’s 256 pages include 262 rare, archival black & white photos and memorabilia shots to accompany my usual in-depth track-by-track play-by-play type o’ crazy biog.

Fresh new interviews for this book included (and most a few times), Scott Gorham, Brian Downey, Gary Moore, Brian Robertson, Dave Flett, Kit Woolven, Jimmy Bain, Darren Wharton, Clive Edwards, Laurence Archer, three punks and a bunch of cool quotes from folks who toured with Lizzy, knew Phil etc. As well, historical press interviews help flesh out this tale of the glory years.

Caution! There’s about half a box of Fighting My Way Back: Thin Lizzy 69-76 left. First come, first served. Sweet postage savings to be had for both at once (or two of pretty much anything – long story, ask me!).

Price including shipping:

US orders: $33.00 US funds

Int’l orders (all books go air): $45.00 Cdn. funds

Canadian orders: $37.00 Cdn. funds

See www.martinpopoff.com for descriptions, cover art and ordering info for his other available 30 or so books.

Vocalist/bassist Ida Haukland comments:

“From the Triosphere-camp we can finally announce that we are releasing the first official video from our critically acclaimed sophomore album “The Road Less Travelled” (AFM Records). We’ve had the honor of being featured on various compilations around the world with the songs “Driven” and “Human Condition” from the album, but the choice for the first official video landed on a song on the album that we’ve considered as somewhat of a “wildcard”; a song that differs from the others, and that seems to have touched listeners in a different and exiting way. But most of all; a song with a dense, powerful emotion and atmosphere that lent itself to an exciting visual presentation. On behalf of all in the band; we are quite satisfied with the result, and hope our fans will enjoy it!

The release of this video also marks the beginning of the end of the promotion of “The Road Less Travelled”. We have been quite busy for the last months writing new material for our third album, and are intensifying the process with the plan of releasing it early 2013.

Stay tuned for news and updates on both studio and touring at our official websites www.thetriosphere.com.”

Greyhaze Records is proud to announce the formation and signing of brand new death metal act WARFATHER, a devastating new unit conceived by ex-Morbid Angel gladiator Steve Tucker!

In a statement on what metal fans are to expect from WARFATHER, Tucker stated: “This is my new band; it will be my main focus…. it is my kind of death metal.” Having been known for his vocal and bass skills in all of his previous acts, while still holding down vocal duties here, Tucker has moved on to guitar with this project. “I have always played the guitar and I think now is the time for me to make the move. I think doing solos and extra guitar parts will allow me to express myself in a whole new way!” Also on guitars is Armatura, formerly of Cincinnati-based death metal band Dominion. Recruited to the drum kit is Deimos, a death metal veteran currently playing in the band Temple and also having played with bands such as Severe Torture. The bass is dispatched by Nick McMaster (Krallice, Nader Sadek, Castevet). Additional guitar contributions will be tracked by friends of WARFATHER, which include many notable death metal stalwarts; full details will be announced shortly.

WARFATHER are currently in the final stages of tracking the yet-to-be-titled album, with mixing to take place immediately after. Tucker himself is producing the entire release, as he did for the 2011-released Nader Sadek album In the Flesh, which Tucker also performed on. The artwork is in the final stages as well, and will be unveiled shortly, along with the details on the album, which is being slated for release this Fall. Upon its’ release, WARFATHER will take their battle to the highways of the planet on tour in support of the album.

After starting out as vocalist/bassist for death/thrash act Ceremony, Steve Tucker moved on to handle bass and vocals on Morbid Angel’s infamous Formulas Fatal to the Flesh, Gateways to Annihilation and Heretic LPs. In 2009 Tucker was recruited to take part in the Nader Sadek album In the Flesh for release through then brand new label Greyhaze Records, and licensed to Season of Mist Records. The project also featured Flo Mounier (Cryptopsy), Rune Eriksen (Mayhem, Ava Inferi) and more. During this time Tucker struck up a great relationship with Greyhaze Records, and together they decided to bring the reality of WARFATHER to fruition.

The album, with no tittle fixed yet, will be recorded in the month of July in the Axtudio of Barcelona, where the band recorded their previous full length “The seed of Malaise” and where other thrash metal bands from Catalonia recorded as well.

In words of the band: “We’re sure this album will enchant all the lovers of “The seed of malaise”. On one hand we’re going to introduce new elements, going one step further in our concept of thrash metal. On the other hand, it’s going to be 100% Vivid Remorse. Both things complement each other perfectly. It will be a record even more varied than the previous one: with faster moments, some “death metal” parts, some “punk”, some heavy stuff… It will be “A little bit more in every aspect” always with the essence and musical personality of the band, because we didn’t introduce Vivid Remorse in other genres, but our Thrash metal is closer to them right now. So, our philosophy about creating short, dynamic and direct musical pieces with refinements and worked vocal melodies keeps being present in this album”.

Special Guest GOJIRA Joins for 34-Show North American Tour Beginning August 1

This summer, two of the biggest names in metal, LAMB OF GOD and DETHKLOK, will join forces for a 34-show North American tour kicking off on August 1 in Seattle, Wash. The three-time Grammy® Award-nominated band from Richmond, VA and the world’s most brutal animated death band from Adult Swim’s Metalocalypse animated series will shred their way through cities throughout in the U.S. and Canada ending September 15 in San Francisco, CA.

The upcoming DETHKLOK and LAMB OF GOD with GOJIRA summer tour marks the return of LAMB OF GOD to North American stages where they will support their latest album Resolution, which debuted at #3 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart when it was released earlier this year. As in tours past, Brendon Small, the co-creator and composer behind DETHKLOK, will bring the animated band to life on stage each night alongside an all-star band including the legendary Gene Hoglan, Bryan Beller and Mike Keneally. Building on the success of Dethklok: The Dethalbum and Dethklok: The Dethalbum II from Williams Street Records, Small is currently in the studio working on the band’s third album release scheduled for later this year. Additionally, new episodes from the fourth season of Metalocalypse currently air on Adult Swim Sundays at 12:15 a.m. (ET/PT).

Joining the co-headliners at each stop along the tour will be special guest GOJIRA, the French metal band that will perform songs from its upcoming album release, L’Enfant Sauvage, which will be released in the U.S. on June 26 with Roadrunner Records. Pitchfork describes the new album as “breathless and awesome.”

Tickets to the DETHKLOK and LAMB OF GOD with GOJIRA tour will go on sale beginning Friday, May 18 and will include the following stops:
