Folk metal seems to be growing in popularity and in Calgary Alta., there is a strong following. The MacEwan Hall Ballroom was at approximately 80% of the 1000 person capacity for Eluveitie’s all ages gig on October 11, 2014. Joining the Swiss folk metal band on the tour were Estonia’s Mestatoll and Faroese heavy metal band Týr. Fans arrived to the university located venue early and the line-up spanned the building. After doors opened many rushed to the front of the stage, some to the beer gardens and others to the merch booths. The attendees ranged from kids only a few years old with their parents (and it looked there were a few unimpressed looking teenagers with their parents) to seasoned metal veterans. Overall the crowd was on the younger side and their youthful excitement made for a boisterous evening.

Metsatoll were the opening act and were given a generous forty-five minute set. Since their appearance at the Noctis Valkyries Metal festival in 2010, Mestatoll has gathered a sizeable following in Calgary. With three albums on a bigger label since their first appearance they also have a much higher profile.  Their music has a very authentic feel, especially being able to watch Lauri “Varulven” Õunapuu skillfully play many traditional instruments live. Quite a few of the songs played this evening were off the newest album, Karjajuht [Spinefarm Records, 2014] and the heavier material went over very well with the crowd.

Týr was playing in Calgary for the second time this year and in the same venue they joined Children of Bodom and Death Angel at in February. This line up was a better fit for the band, but it seemed they had garnered some enthusiastic fans over their last visits. Týr focused heavily on the last two albums and brought more metal influence to the folk themed night. Vocalist Heri Joensen took the time to introduce and explain a few of the tunes, like “By the Sword In My Hand”, about “the unfortunate introduction of Christianity to the Faroe Islands”. This particular song had the audience screaming the lyrics along with the band. “Hold the Heathen Hammer High” may have been the heaviest and faster version we’ve seen them do. Bassist Gunnar Thomsen was smiling and engaging the crowd throughout the entire set and Amon Djurhuus was throwing horns from behind the drum kit. Terji Skibenæs was quite the showman shredding on the guitar and trading solos with Joensen. It’s possible Týr almost stole the show that night.

Eluveitie hit the stage at 10:00 pm sharp. The stage was set up to allow as much room as possible to the eight member band and included some banners with risers for the musicians to stand on at the back of the stage. As always, people were having fun moshing and crowd surfing even though this may not have exactly fit the music. Overall the sound was good, but quite loud and frontman Chrigel Glanzmann’s vocals were a little overdriven at times. The instrumentation and mix of all the various instruments sounded great this evening. The song selection for the night had many picks from the newest album Origins [Nuclear Blast, 2014] and of course contained a good selection of older favorites.

Glanzmann included some storytelling, including a longer monologue of the backstory of Vianna the little girl who is the main character of the new album. Anna Murphy introduced “Call of the Mountains”, explaining the band had recorded in the song in many different languages, and polled the audience as to which language they wanted to hear the song sung in. Calgary gave a lack luster response to the suggestion of English, booed French and cheered very loudly for their choice of Swiss German. “Inis Mona” ended the night with more clapping, singing and dancing from the crowd.

Audio Fidelity To Release Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s “The Christmas Attic” On 2-LP Set!

October 18th, 2014
by Celtic Bob

TSO ChristmasFRONT-Web

Christmas arrives early this year with the release of Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s  rock opera “The Christmas Attic” on 2-LP Set by Marshall Blonstein’s Audio Fidelity. Originally released in 1998, “The Christmas Attic” is the second installment of Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s Christmas Trilogy. The story begins On Christmas Eve,  when a young girl’s curiosity leads her to a night of mischief and magic when she decides to sneak up into the attic of her parents’ home while she should be asleep.  This album contains a mix of vocal and instrumental songs. The track “Christmas Canon,” one of the TSO’s most well-known songs, is a variation of Pachelbel’s famous Canon in D Major, with lyrics and new music added as well as Boughs of Holly and a soulful rendition of Music Box Blues.

“The Christmas Attic” is being made available on vinyl for the first time in a 2-LP set. The brilliantly remastered records are packaged in a seasonal gatefold jacket that includes a colorful 12-page booklet filled with the tale of The Christmas Attic as well as the lyrics to all the songs.

When founder and producer Paul O’Neill first conceived Trans-Siberian Orchestra, his goal was as straightforward as it was ambitious: “…create a progressive rock band that would push the boundaries further than any group before, following in the footsteps of Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Pink Floyd, the Who…but take it way, way further.”

With more than 9 million albums sold TSO has inspired generations of fans to rediscover the multi-dimensional art form of the rock opera. They’ve become one of the world’s top acts and listed in Billboard magazine as one of the top touring artists of the past decade. Their $20 million-plus stage production has played to over 11 million people in 80+ cities across the globe. TSO will once again be touring during the 2014 and 2015 holiday season with “The Christmas Attic” show. Last year they welcomed-in the New Year in front of over one million German fans in a nationally televised show live from the Brandenberg Gate.

HUNTRESS To Support AMON AMARTH In Europe/UK Early 2015!

October 18th, 2014
by Celtic Bob

4tqJ6y

California’s HUNTRESS will be touring  North Amercia this fall with Arch Enemy and Kreator in support of their latest release, 2013’s Starbound Beast. The tour begins October 23rd in Baltimore, MD and runs through November 23rd in Cleveland, OH.

HUNTRESS will continue their rapid  pace, having just announced a full European tour with Amon Amarth as direct support! Vocalist Jill Janus on the upcoming tour :

“The Gods have spoken! HUNTRESS will spend a wintery month with the Vikings from Sweden; Amon Amarth! It’s a fantasy come true to tour with one of our favorite bands as direct support. Huntress will bring the fury to Europe and the UK once again! This is an exciting time for us, just launching into a North American tour with the mighty Arch Enemy and Kreator. Our attack has been relentless, we’re now recording our third album in Los Angeles with production duo Andrew Alekel (Foo Fighters, No Doubt, Queens of the Stone Age, Clutch) and Jim Rota (Sound City, Fireball Ministry, Kyng), slated for release in early 2015. Spread it, shred it, behead it! Hail Heavy Metal!”

HUNTRESS was spawned from the preternatural union of Jill Janus with underground metal bands Professor and Dark Black. They thrive on thundering drums, heavy riffs, spectral solos and catchy choruses that come from the band’s musical concoction of occult science and bong rips. HUNTRESS remains true to the roots of melodic heavy metal with a penchant for thrash, death and black metal.

Starbound Beast – the latest critically acclaimed album by HUNTRESS -is available worldwide on Napalm Records.

SODOM to Release New EP Sacred Warpath in January 2015 on SPV/Steamhammer

October 18th, 2014
by Celtic Bob

m5LUqu
Listen up, everybody! Mister Tom Angelripper has important things to say on the subject of the brand-new SODOM EP Sacred Warpath, on the state of the world and on life in general. He’s really vented his feelings: “Since we’ve been getting the impression that the world is falling apart at the seams, we’ve decided to make our voices head … while there’s still time. ‘Sacred Warpath’ was originally written for our upcoming album, but we feel it’s a good idea to release it now as an appetizer for future Sodom tracks. Because it’s going to get raw, brutal and will be a reflection of all the things that we’re afraid of and that give us nightmares. Pretty much like that hate-filled world we live in. And it’s probably more authentic than any of our releases so far.”

Tom Angelripper on the bonus material of SODOM’s new EP: “The record includes three representative titles which we recorded in Germany this year, and it’s guaranteed to become a rare collectors’ item. The cover will feature a re-paint of an old design from the 80s, which I did for a demo cover, painted in oil by Christian Ermel. This may all sound a little old-school, but that’s intentional. That’s what we’ve always been and always will be about. We very much hope to tie over the waiting time until the arrival of our new album. And now listen to my unmistakable demand on this world: turn back on your sacred warpath and find the path of peace before it’s too late. Our music will help you!”

Sacred Warpath will be released worldwide through SPV / Steamhammer on November 28th  in Germany, December 1st  in Europe and late January 2015 in the USA as CD, 10″ clear vinyl (limited to 1.000 copies) and download.

EXODUS’ Highly-Anticipated New Album “Blood In, Blood Out” Out Now via Nuclear Blast

October 15th, 2014
by Celtic Bob

Exodus - Blood In, Blood Out - Artwork (585x585)

Blood In, Blood Out, the brand new album by EXODUS that Yahoo Music calls, “one of the most anticipated heavy metal records of the year”, has been unleashed to the word today via Nuclear Blast. Pick up a copy of the album at your local music retailers. Produced by Andy Sneap (ACCEPT, KREATOR, MEGADETH), Blood In, Blood Out can be ordered from the Nuclear Blast USA Webshop in CD, digi-pak + bonus DVD, 2-LP exclusive yellow vinyl, and imported limited edition box set formats. The album can also be purchased via iTunes, Google Play and Amazon.

“This entire band could not be more proud and excited for this record to hit the US like an atom bomb,” states guitarist Gary Holt. “D-Day is upon us, time to go to war!”

“We’re so excited for this release,” adds vocalist Steve “Zetro” Souza. “I think it’s the best effort that I’ve ever given vocally. If you love what EXODUS has done over the past 30 years, you’re really going to love Blood In, Blood Out, so go pick this shit up and will see you out there on tour live!”

Critics have had nothing but tremendously positive things to say about Blood In, Blood Out – which is being considered a return to form by many.

“Pared down to a simple sentence, this album is fucking sick,” chimed the first web review for the record, penned by Blabbermouth’s Ray Van Horn, Jr. Shortly after, Decibel Magazine’s Kevin Stewart Panko gave great praise to both returning vocalist Steve “Zetro” Souza and guitarists Gary Holt and Lee Altus, saying tracks on the record feature, “Sousa spitting forth from a venomous thesaurus and some of the most adventurous lead work that Holt and Altus have ever recorded.” The EXODUS rhythm section receives equal praise from About.com Heavy Metal’s Dave Schalek, who states, “[Tom] Hunting shows no signs of slowing down and bassist Jack Gibson anchors down the album’s bottom heavy sound.”

“EXODUS deliver the definite lesson in violence,” adds Rue Morgue’s Aaron Lupton, while Outburn Magazine offered positive remarks in both review and feature form. “A vintage thrash metal voice placed on top of an EXODUS sound again harnessed to perfection by Andy Sneap has resulted in an album that batters the eardrums as effectively as it boils the blood,” remarks Scott Alisoglu. The most recent stellar-rating review comes from New Noise Magazine, in which Brandon Ringo states, “Once again, EXODUS has proven exactly why they have attained such a legendary stature over the years and are considered one of the greatest bands in thrash metal even 30 years later!”

EXODUS guitarist Gary Holt recently announced that he has officially joined the ESP Guitars’ acclaimed artist endorsement roster, just in time for the release of Blood In, Blood Out!

“I am way beyond excited to announce my return to the mighty ESP!” said Holt. “The new guitars are amazing, and I can’t wait to unleash the new signature model on the world! It’s gonna be a sick shred machine with that crushing tone ESP has been long known for! Can’t wait to let this beast roar!”

Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett, an early bandmate and decades-long friend of Holt (and celebrated guest soloist on Blood In, Blood Out) commented, “Gary has influenced a whole generation of metal guitarists with his wicked riffs and leads in EXODUS. I’m happy that he’s jumped on for the ESP ride!”

ESP’s director of artist relations Chris Cannella says, “I am so proud to have Gary onboard at ESP. Not only is he one of the best players in metal… he created thrash metal!”

A Heavy Metal Christmas Is Coming

October 15th, 2014
by Celtic Bob

XozAF5

Happy Holidays, headbangers! It’s not going to be a “White Christmas” this year. Instead, it’ll be a “Heavy Christmas.”

Finland’s annual, all-star symphonic Christmas rock project, dubbed Raskasta Joulua, which translates to “Heavy Christmas,” is enjoying its 10th year running. To celebrate, the project, which tours every holiday season, will release a new studio album this year. The album, titled Ragnarok Juletide, releases on November 11 via Spinefarm Records.  Get a taste HERE.

But this is not just another set of ho-ho-ho-hum takes on holiday songs nor is it a collection of predictable, safe versions of seasonal jams! For the first time ever, these versions of Finnish and international Christmas classics will also be recorded in the English language.

Raskasta Joulua is inspired by Trans-Siberian Orchestra and the participants view the project in serious fashion, which is not always true of Christmas-themed collections. There is nothing novelty or jokey about this project or this release. Don’t expect familiar holiday favorites to be given a weak makeover or merely amplified by distorted guitars that have been added to give the Christmas jams a “rock” feel. That would be a Christmas cop out.

Instead, the record truly and effectively captures the majesty, the wonder and the glory of the holiday season; the songs are carefully arranged and executed, with flawless musicianship and world-class vocal contributions.

Ragnarok Juletide will put headbangers in the most festive of moods, regardless of which metal subgenre he or she prefers, from speedy power metal to symphonic epics to dirgey doom. It’s all here on this year’s Ragnarok Juletide.

Marco Hietala (Nightwish, Tarot, Northern Kings), Tony Kakko (Sonata Arctica, Northern Kings), Elize Ryd ( Amaranthe), Jarkko Ahola ( Teräsbetoni, Northern Kings), Antti Railio
(2013 Voice of Finland winner) and more lend their throats to the project.

“It’s amazing that we’re still doing this and that it has grown to these proportions,” said founder/producer/arranger/guitarist Erkka Korhonen. “Every year has been bigger for us and now the tour is one of the biggest annual treks in Finland.”

Indeed, the accompanying tour is an event and a highlight on the annual holiday calendar for fans of all age groups. The project has progressed in size and scope each and every year, in both popularity and the prestige of the participants. The concert tour now runs for more than a month before the holiday season and plays to full arenas and ice stadiums.

Overall, Ragnarok Juletide is the definitive collection of holiday hymns for headbangers. This is how you’ve always wanted to hear Christmas music, but most artists have lacked the balls to do it this way.

Korhonen furthered, “Even people who haven’t celebrated Christmas for years have found its spirit again through what we do. Since we’ve expanded the vocalist lineup every year, the audience wants to hear our new vocalists on the record. It’ll be fantastic to bring these songs into other countries too!”

GWAR’s Manager Sleazy P. Martini Issues Statement About GWAR Eternal Tour

October 15th, 2014
by Celtic Bob

CXNoWy

Toodles, ya parasitic bohabs. It’s me, Sleazy P Martini. As you may already know, GWAR will be out on the GWAR Eternal Tour starting tonight because Thai ladyboys don’t pay for themselves. You smarter Bohabs have probably even noticed that GWAR has undergone a lineup change.

The reason for this is the absence of Oderus Urungus due to his return to space. First of all, let’s clear something up: Oderus is not dead! Nor is GWAR. Now, admittedly things will be different. For instance, with Oderus’s absence, touring expenses will be scaled back considerably as crack usage by the band will drop by over nine tons a day. To which I, the CIA and the Medellin Cartel respond with a collective: “Phew!” Now all those drug mules crossing the border can use the extra butt space for more important things such as food, water and more relatives.

Of course, there are many in the scene (code for no-talents) who say that with Oderus out of the band, GWAR should hang it up. To which I must respond: If I wanted your opinion, I would just knock you unconscious and urinate on your face. Which wouldn’t elicit much of an opinion at all – just the way I like it. You see, GWAR is a perpetual and unstoppable force. If I tried to retire them, I most certainly would end up flayed, shredded, pulled and served with coleslaw and fries to Gor-Gor. One who is a lion tamer cannot suddenly decide to stop and ask his lions to become house cats. And GWAR’s lust for human carnage cannot properly be met in semi-retirement on the talk-show circuit. So the shows must go on. And they have, starting with Riot Fest in Chicago. The GWAR Eternal Tour starts tonight in Norfolk, VA.  and goes through December 13th in Baltimore, MD

Now, there are some who would say, “How can you find a lead singer as talented as Oderus Urungus?” To which I have responded by having famed archeologist Dr. Richard Leaky travel to Antarctica to dig up another immortal Scumdog. According to Dr. Dick, these furballs are stacked up in GWAR’s fortress basement like chicken pot pies four for a buck. In fact, I have already thawed out one promising prospect named Blóthar. While not as talented a singer as most primates, he’s definitely better than Justin Bieber or the entire One Direction line up.

So, in response to all you haters who would give your left nut to see GWAR finally call it quits, you can go ahead and keep your left nut and hang it from your nose-ring for another 30 years, because GWAR AIN’T GOING NOWHERE!  And though you may think GWAR sucks, remember that GWAR is immortal. So, long after your lame hipster ass is in the ground being used as a luxury condo by worms, maggots and pill bugs, GWAR will still be alive, sucking forever.

Deceiver of the Gods North American Tour 2014

The Deceiver of Gods tour had finally made its way to Canada and on October 4, 2014 Amon Amarth stormed Flames Central in Calgary Alta., along with fellow Swedes Sabaton and Skeletonwitch from the U.S. The show was sold out and fans had lined up early before doors opened and the lineup, consisting of some peopled clad in Viking costumes, spanned a few blocks. Amon Amarth has played Calgary many times but it was their first time in the local hockey team’s themed venue. Calgary Flames symbols and paraphernalia decorate the venue. The room itself is decent for getting a view of the stage even if the venue is packed as it is multilevel. Merch tables were tucked away from the floor and had a constant line up of people buying some new items. The varying styles of bands worked well for this bill as each has developed quite a large following in Calgary.

Ohio’s Skeletonwitch were up first and the floor was already packed. The five pieces from Ohio launched right into a high energy and aggressive set. “More Cruel Than Weak” off their last release, Serpents Unleashed [Prosthetic Records, 2013], was the first song in the set and got the crowd moving right away. Vocalist Chance Garnette was stalking the stage menacingly and with the stage lights set up so high above the band, his eyes appeared to be ominous black pits. Guitarists Nate Garnette and Scott Hedrick delivered a skillful double les Paul attack. Skeletonwitch closed the set with “Within My Blood” and the audience was left thoroughly thrashed and ready for the next bands.

Smoke crept across the stage and the audience immediately began chanting “Sabaton!”. The band took the stage with big smiles and vocalist Joakim Brodén was bounding around the stage and lunging down to the audience’s level to make eye contact and throw some horns. The band was ready to entertain and the crowd was ready to party. Sabaton had made a great impression on Calgary in April 2014 and fans were singing along and jumping around with the band. When Brodén tried to get the audience to join in a rendition of YMCA there was little enthusiasm for it, so the band delivered a few more songs. Then Brodén brought out a guitar to have a riff/solo challenge with guitarist Chris Rörland and Thobbe Englund. Brodén was of course good naturedly showed up. He then pulled out a few bars of Metallica’s “Master of Puppets” and afterwards tentatively started singing “YMCA” and the crowd actually joined in fairly boisterously. Calgary had another fun night enjoying Sabaton’s music and stage antics.

By this time in the evening a large portion of attendees were inebriated and everyone was eagerly awaiting the Viking metallers to take the stage. There was already so much energy that when “Run to the Hills” played over the speakers during set change, everyone in the venue was singing along and some people even started crowd surfing. Amon Amarth opened with “Deceiver of the Gods” and hair started flying. Fans were singing along to choruses, headbanging, and the pit was kept consistently chaotic throughout the ninety minute set. After the second song “Runes Carved to My Memory”, frontman Johan Hegg customarily addressed the crowd under a single spotlight before thundering into “Death in Fire”. Other crowd favorites were “The Last Stand of Frej”, “Guardians of Asgaard”, and “Cry of the Blackbirds”.  The set was powerful and captivating this night. Non-stop crowd surfers had security working hard and diligently in the very small space allotted between the stage and barrier. Amon Amarth finished with “Twilight of the Thunder God” and “The Pursuit of Vikings” that had everyone roaring lyrics back to Hegg.

Overall it was a successful night for all the bands. Starting with the straight up intense brutality of Skeletonwtich, to Sabaton’s jovial set and Amon Amarth’s crushing ferocity, fans were left battered.

Ghost Machinery line-up changes & 3rd album details

October 13th, 2014
by EvilG

As previously reported, lead vocalist Taage Laiho isn’t in the band anymore. His work can be heard on GM’s second album Out For Blood and he also did a miniature tour with the band at the time of release. His signing out doesn’t involve any drama, it was only due to schedule and distance problems.

After seriously considering all the possibilities, the guys came up with a solution. The new lead vocalist for the band is Pete Ahonen, who is also the songwriter and guitarist in the band. This decision is natural because the band’s debut Haunting Remains had Mr. Ahonen on the lead vocals as well.

Bass player Sami Nyman made a decision to leave the band last winter. The guys did look for a new bassist among other things but the right kind of axeman wasn’t found easily. Mr. Nyman managed to do a comeback after a band meeting this fall. He explains: “Sometimes life throws you around and you have to make a decision. That’s only to find out later on that it was a big mistake. I’m lucky as hell to have such amazing band comrades, such as the guys in Ghost Machinery. Now’s the time to concentrate on our third album.”

Their third album is titled Evil Undertow. Cover artwork looks amazingly good and the recordings are nearly done. After finishing a few guitar parts and solos and wrapping up the vocals it’s a done deal. The release date is somewhere in the near future but it unfortunately won’t be this year. The album will be released via German label Limb Music.

OZZY Statement On ‘The Daily Mail Online’ 9-11 Story

October 13th, 2014
by Celtic Bob

“Firstly, I never spoke to ‘The Mail Online.’  Several quotes were pulled from another interview I did for The Shortlist that was posted earlier in the day and were taken out of context to create ‘The Mail Online’ story [about 9-11].   I apologize to anyone who may see these quotes and believe this is actually how I feel.  Please know that I would never want to offend or hurt anyone–that was never or would ever be my intention.  You would think that at my age I would finally realize that any conversation with a journalist can be twisted, reprinted and made into another story. It’s another life lesson learned.

My representatives have asked ‘The Mail Online’ to pull the piece, but of course, they’ve refused and now it has been subsequently picked up worldwide because of the sensational slant ‘The Mail Online’ put on the story.

Love and peace to everyone.  May your God go with you.”

–Ozzy Osbourne
