Interview with keyboardist Pedro Paixão

31st of March 2015 on Moonspell tour bus in Paris, France
Interviewed by Oliver Manso

Moonspell keyboardist Pedro Paixão

The Road to Extinction European tour was a great success for Moonspell, with many sold out gigs in France, Portugal and the UK. They also sold a good number of VIP tickets for their most loyal wolves, which was something they have never done before. Their brand new album “Extinct” has been praised by the international critics and has also been a commercial success so far. It entered the charts of several European countries and was even number 1 in Portugal.

Before the beginning of their concert in Paris, I interviewed keyboardist Pedro Paixão with the presence of their tour manager Bruno Fernandes (previously known in Portugal for singing in several extreme metal acts such as The Firstborn and Nephtys). After interviewing vocalist Fernando Ribeiro two months ago, it was interesting to get a new point of view from the current kings of gothic metal in their luxurious tour bus.

GOATWHORE, SKELETONWITCH AND MORTALS

Sound Control, Manchester, England
11th April 2015

Review by Toria Morgan. Photography by Jas Stephenson.

It was an overcast and windy Saturday (for a change) in Manchester city centre and in good old English fashion, a lengthy queue formed outside Sound Control that stretched down the street a fair way. People clad in Goatwhore, Skeletonwitch and Mortals merchandise waited to be let in to the ‘Hell Has Arrived Over Europe Tour 2015.’ I overheard people had come from as far as Liverpool and St. Annes to see this gig. This alone should have given me an idea of what to expect once I got inside, seemingly it was quite a big deal.

Goatwhore interview with Sammy Duet at Sound Control Manchester 2015. Photo by Jas Stephenson.

I caught up with Sammy Duet, super talented guitarist of Goatwhore, on Saturday night in Manchester. Just after their set ended in Sound Control, I managed to secure an interview with the man himself. And what a pleasure he was to speak to! We sat in a small room upstairs, away from the roar of the stage and the milling crowds while I interviewed him and got to know a little more about Goatwhore, their influences and what inspires him musically.

Scott Ian Anthrax: Interview

Scott Ian

Scott Ian

Scott Ian: Metallica’s  No Life t’ll Leather Demo just blew me away, it sounded so cool

Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian spoke to Canada’s ‘The Metal Voice’ about his book ‘I’m The man’ and Anthrax’s and coming new album

When asked about the music scene when Anthrax first started out.

“At the beginning there was no scene in New York for bands playing their own music, there were just cover bands at the time. We were just a bunch of guys who were into metal and wanted to write our own songs and had a rehearsal space,  we there six, seven times nights a week just working on trying to be the best band we could be. By 1984 there was a scene because Raven, Metallica and Anthrax  sold out the Roseland Ballroom in New York City, none of us had a major record label deal yet  3500 kids showed up and lost their minds. Former Megadeth drummer Nick Menza reveals details on what went down during audition at Dave Mustaine’s San Diego studio, Taps producer Max Norman

April 17th, 2015
by EvilG
Nick Menza

Nick Menza

Former Megadeth drummer Nick Menza was recently offered a ‘very unfair deal to rejoin Megadeth’ In a brand new exclusive interview with Caleb Smith of the Heavy Metal Thrash, “The Sick Room” podcast in New Zealand, Nick Menza explains in depth the logistics of what went on in Dave Mustaine’s San Diego based Studio, you can you now listen to the two part interview below.

Menza: “I went and jammed with them for a 3 day weekend and then on the 3rd day we started to write new songs, and it was cool, they even told me that I was back in the band and to send a press release about it. I didn’t want to say anything until I had an agreement, a contract in writing on what is going to happen and they send this ridiculous proposal which pretty much said ‘You’re not going to get paid until the touring’, so basically I was going to be working on the new record for free, but then I had intended on leaning towards that anyway and then I thought to myself I’m not going to break, I’m not going to sell myself short for something that is going to be huge you know. They gotta realize the longevity it, and then the whole thing just became silly, I didn’t even get a chance to negotiate about anything, they just cut it off and said ‘that’s it’ and afterwards I couldn’t get hold of Dave or anybody, he blocked my emails”

NIGHTWISH ANNOUNCE NORTH AMERICAN RELEASE OF THEIR FILM IMAGINAERUM

April 16th, 2015
by EvilG
Nightwish - Imaginaerum

Nightwish – Imaginaerum

The long-awaited NIGHTWISH movie Imaginaerum will finally be released in North America on June 16thon Nuclear Blast Records!

Imaginaerum tells the story of an elderly composer, Tom, who suffers from severe dementia. As he has had the disease for years and has regressed into childhood, he remembers practically nothing from his adult life. His music, friends, all his past including the memory of his daughter are a blur in his fragile mind. All he has left is the imagination of a ten year old boy. As he drifts away into coma, it seems impossible to get back what he has lost. Or is it?

Imaginaerum creates a musical fantasy world in the vein of David Lynch, Neil Gaiman, and Tim Burton. The movie is an innovative mixture of story-telling and music, an extraordinary tale of the power of imagination and  life itself – a true emotional rollercoaster ride!

There are some questions we must ask ourselves before entering the world of Imaginaerum. What is most important in life? Can the power of memories protect us during our last moments? Will our imagination help us find the spark of life in the deepest darkness? Can we still find love after bitter forgiveness?

Shot and post-produced in Canada, the movie was directed by Stobe Harju and produced by Solar Films, and features appearances by NIGHTWISH members. The screenplay is based on a wild vision that Tuomas Holopainen, the mastermind of the band, devised after the album Dark Passion Play came out in 2007.

From Hell’s Heart: Top 5 “NEW” metal singers

This list is meant to highlight NEW TALENT. For our purposes, that is defined as a singer who made their professional recording debut in the past 10 years (from 2005-2015). This means the singer was not on any recorded label releases prior to 2005. Keeping that in mind, we focus on some of the younger/newer talent that is out there.

We asked our staff to give us their top 5 selections and some thoughts on them. Check out the results below.

Shortly after the release of their World On Fire album (their second collaborative effort), guitarist extraordinaire Slash took the stage with Myles Kennedy (of Alter Bridge fame) & The Conspirators at the legendary Roxy Theatre on Sunset Strip in West Hollywood. Apocalyptica

Not content with being one of the world’s more unique bands, metal cello masters Apocalyptica  feel the need to push the boat out when promoting a new album.  Before setting off on their US tour, the band went on a small promotional tour for new release ‘Shadowmaker’, which included an intimate acoustic performance to an invited audience within the specimen laden shelves of Barts Pathology Museum in the heart of the City of London.
