As always, the top albums of the year are for full albums (no EP’s or demos) released in 2016. They are new studio albums for the year, not re-recordings, re-releases, cover songs, or live albums. Below the combined TOP 30 are links to each individual staff members’ personal “best of” lists which besides their top albums contains such things as best new band, best DVD/Blu-Ray, best metal book, disappointments of the year, greatest hopes for 2017, personal metal discovery of the year, and various other categories. Enjoy!

METAL CHURCH has recruited Stet Howland (ex-W.A.S.P.) to play drums for the band on all its summer shows. He joins the group as the replacement for Jeff Plate, who announced his departure from METAL CHURCH last month.
Howland commented: “I was contacted by my good friend METAL CHURCH bass player Steve Unger recently after their drummer Jeff Plate stepped down after 12 years of dedicated service. The band has a bunch of summer festival dates as well as other touring for the year.
“When Steve called, the first thing he said was, ‘How busy are you right now?’ I laughed and asked him to get to the point, ’cause anyone who knows me knows that I’m constantly busy. Steve confided that Jeff had given his notice and that they needed a drummer immediately. He said that their new CD is going through the roof and that they have a ton of summer dates. I was very excited, to say the least.
“I became a hardcore fan of METAL CHURCH when they toured with W.A.S.P. on our 2005 ‘Metal Blast’ tour. Our then-guitar player Darrell Roberts and I would stand in the wings watching every show; they kicked ass every single night! Their drummer at the time was Kirk Arrington, a great drummer and guy. We became friends immediately. And as it happens, I’m also old friends with Jeff Plate, METAL CHURCH’s most recent drummer of 12 years. Jeff is a monster drummer and one of the nicest guys you could ever hope to meet. It will be an honor and a privilege to step into his gig.
“I flew to Seattle and jammed with the band last week. We clicked immediately — nothing but big smiles from the first song to the last. It was great!
“It’s a great band, great guys, and they have an excellent aggressive record label behind them. They are still making fresh and relevant music. This is an honor indeed.”

THE INFAMOUS VOICE OF TROUBLE, ERIC WAGNER, SIGNS WITH M-THEORY AUDIO; NEW BLACKFINGER ALBUM DUE THIS SUMMER
Eric Wagner is a unique and legendary voice in our scene, and M-Theory Audio is pleased to announce we’ll be releasing his next Blackfinger album, When Colors Fade Away, this summer.
Renowned and still cherished for the classic material he recorded with Chicago’s Trouble for over two decades, in recent years Wagner has been focusing on a couple other promising new bands in a similar vein and one of those is Blackfinger. Now relocated to Pittsburgh, Eric has a new full band lineup and is joined in Blackfinger for their sophomore album by another respected name in doom metal circles, guitarist Terry Weston of Dream Death/Penance.
“I’m extremely excited to announce that Blackfinger has signed with M-Theory Audio,” cites Eric Wagner. “It is an honor and a pleasure to work with Marco Barbieri again after all these years.”
“Eric, the pleasure is all mine,” responds M-Theory Audio’s Marco Barbieri. “Eric Wagner is a true artist, talent and storyteller. I’ve spent the last 34 years listening to classic tales weaved by this man; and he is truly one of my favorite vocalists. Along the way I’ve had the pleasure of working with Eric and Trouble while at Century Media during their Plastic Green Head album cycle and even had his other band, The Skull, headline one of the Doom in June Festivals. Now our co-operation and friendship continues and I am fortunate to release the new and phenomenal Blackfinger album.”
M-Theory Audio is the new label recently launched by Marco Barbieri, the former president of Century Media Records, whose previous experience includes Nuclear Blast and Metal Blade. Joining Marco in this adventure are colleagues whose past experience includes work for labels like Century Media, Prosthetic, Victory and Epitaph. The label’s roster includes Bay Area thrash outfit Cultural Warfare, Las Vegas prog/power metal band Sicocis, Sacramento headbangers Blessed Curse, Southern California’s Pagan Death Metallers Helsott, Nomadic Folk Metal band Tengger Cavalry, Female-fronted symphonic metal band Graveshadow and Nor Cal’s death/metalcore band Apothesary.
Guitarist/singer/songwriter RICHIE KOTZEN has just released the video for “My Rock” from his 21st solo album, SALTING EARTH, which dropped last Friday, April 14 via his own custom label, Headroom-Inc.
The majority of SALTING EARTH is the result of KOTZEN’s one-man production machine, with the exception of Julia Lage adding background vocals to “Make It Easy,” a tasty, sing-along groove stew. “It’s really not deliberate when the record is finished and suddenly I’m the only performer on it,” KOTZEN admits. “It actually comes out of my process of writing and documenting my ideas. It started back in the late-’80s when I had a makeshift studio in my parents’ barn. I grew up fairly isolated, and I soon realized in order to get this music out of my head and onto a format where I could listen to it, I’d have to figure out how to do it alone.”
KOTZEN’s previous solo release, 2015’s diverse, far-reaching CANNIBALS, was a well-received hit among his core fan base, and SALTING EARTH cuts like the aforementioned “End of Earth,” “Thunder,” and “Divine Power” all showcase the scorching guitar solos and soaring vocals that one would expect from a KOTZEN solo album. That said, there’s also quite a vulnerable side on display here that’s perhaps best demonstrated in the stripped-down approach to the album’s closing salvo, “Grammy.”
RICHIE KOTZEN will launch his “Salting Earth Tour” this Friday, April 21 at The Canyon Club in Agoura Hills, CA. He and his band are planning to tour extensively throughout the U.S. and continue their journey into Mexico, South America, and Europe. Terry Ilous, lead singer for the band Great White, and founder of 80’s metal band XYZ is premiering his third solo venture, Gypsy Dreams, on Friday, April 28th, 2017.
Terry Ilous relocated to Hollywood, California from Lyon, France in 1986 forming the metal band XYZ along with friend and bassist Pat Fontaine. Ilous quickly became a favorite on Sunset Strip scene in the late 80’s before getting signed to Enigma / Capitol Records. After selling over 1.5 million records worldwide and touring with artists such as Foreigner and Alice Cooper; Ilous has continued to release albums well into the 2000’s along with film, song-writing, and television work.
In 2009 Terry was contacted to play a handful of dates with multi-platinum recording artists Great White; who are one of the few bands of that era to still be consistently touring to sold out shows. In 2011 the line-up was made official and Great White immediately headed out on an extensive year long tour followed by a new album in 2012 that was highly praised by the media & fans alike. With the song ‘Hard To say Goodbye’ reaching #8 in the Billboard Radio Chart.
Currently Ilous has been finalizing his latest project, Gypsy Dreams, a cover album of classic rock and hard rock favorites with a Latin and flamenco edge.
The album features an amazing cast of L.A. based artists including, Luis Villegas [Grammy nominated artist ] on Guitar, Jose Garcia [vocalist, renowned flamenco guitarist] on Guitar, Chris Trujillo [former percussionist for Toto, Black Crows] Drums / Percussion, Al Velasquez [Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Michael McDonald, Albert Lee] on Drums / Percussion, Mike Paganini – [renowned session player, Bassist] on Bass, Ben Woods – [renowned flamenco guitarist w/ Benise, Heavy Mellow] on Guitar, Mike Bennett [Alicia Keys, Pitbull, Ritchie Kotzen] on Drums / Percussion, Jesse Stern [George Clinton, Chad Smith] on Bass & Natalie Gelman [singer / songwriter] on Background Vocals.
Terry States: “This album is just the start in a series of different projects I have in mind for the future. I decided to start with covers of familiar & rock favorites to introduce the Latin / Flamenco Rock sound to my audience, and I plan to start up a series of intimate club shows reminiscent of close-knit Latin & Gypsy gatherings.”
Terry on recording “Long Train Running” – “In the late 80’s I would warm up with Long Train Running while on the road with XYZ; and for years I wanted to record the song with more of a Latin edge.”
Terry Ilous on recording “Heaven & Hell” – “Dio was arguably one of the biggest inspirations in music. And this is one of the songs that really influenced my decision in making this album.”
He adds: ” This has been a long road, but the final tracks sound truly amazing, and are definitely worth the wait. I thank all my fans & band for being a part of this journey and for all your support along the way, I couldn’t have done it without each and every one of you.”

RAVAGE, the traditional heavy metal act with thrash influences from Boston MA has posted a new lyric video for the song “Turn The Screw” (link below). The track is the first single from the band’s forthcoming “Return Of The Spectral Rider” album which will be released by the band’s own imprint, Society For World Wide Ravage Recordings on May 26th. The offering is a complete re-recording of the band’s album “Spectral Rider” which was given a limited release by Germany’ Karthago Records in 2005. The band made the album available for digital pre-order last Friday and the track “Turn The Screw” is available now for download and streaming. The album will be offered on limited edition CD and Vinyl formats in addition to digital.
Singer Al Ravage commented, “We really appreciate the support we’ve received so far on this project. We’ve wanted to have a better presentation of these songs for many years and so it’s great to finally be getting this out there, but this is also the first time we have tried releasing a full-length album ourselves without any label support – so we sort of need all the help we can get in order to be heard. We recorded everything ourselves in our own studio so we got a very raw, live sound, but it is also sounding the way we alway wanted it to sound with crazy amounts of guitars and extended solos relentless kick drums and just everything over the top.”
The album features artwork by TIM JACOBUS (known for artwork on the R.L. STINE’S GOOSEBUMPS and FEAR STREET series of horror novels) and guest appearances from former Ravage members and local band friends. The recording was mastered by PETER RUTCHO (VOMITRON, REVOCATION) who had produced the band’s last album “The End Of Tomorrow” which was released by Metalblade Records in 2009.

The second edition of the Netherlands DeathFest was arranged at the prestigious 013 club in Tilburg. The line-up is definitely incredible again, presenting a wide range of extreme metal, including crust punk, and extreme black metal. Metal-Rules.com visited the 013 club to witness a number of bands performing at various stages. The Netherlands Death Fest is an excellent testimony to how death metal lives both on the mainstream level and in the catacombs of the underground. The schedule was extremely hectic and some bands played at the same time. However, here is the brief article of the Netherlands Death Fest.
The new record is entitled »The Rise Of Chaos« and will be unleashed on August 4th, 2017. The 4th studio release through Nuclear Blast will continue the tradition of its three predecessors – »Blood Of The Nations«, »Stalingrad«, and »Blind Rage« – with grandeur and precision.
And if this wasn’t enough, we will celebrate the album’s live premiere exclusively on August 3rd, on the day before its release, as a part of a special show at Wacken Open Air, Germany. The set will consist of three parts:
Part 1 will bring fans a classic set, packed with new and old hits. Part 2 will present another premiere: Wolf Hoffmann will be playing tracks from his solo album »Headbangers Symphony«, released in 2016, with the Czech National Symphony Orchestra for the very first time. On this record, Wolf has covered famous opuses by composers such as Beethoven, Vivaldi, and Mozart, in a metal guise. And in Part 3, all elements can be seen and heard together: This will make the holy Wacken ground shake by sharing the stage with the orchestra, supported by a complex multimedia show.
This unique concert experience will take place on this year’s »Night To Remember« which makes it even more special. The »Night To Remember« is a celebrated, long-lasting Wacken tradition; for one night of the festival a selection of established bands will do something unique and special with their performance.
The song “Paradise” comes from the brand new Cromonic album TIME. According to the band, “The video shows a break out from a mental hospital. We all need to leave our past behind.”
The video was recorded and edited by Mauzer productions. Make up by Amanda Felsing Immonen. Video story/concept by Cromonic.
For more information on the band, check out our recent interview with vocalist Pasi Humppi.

Debut Self-Titled Album Out Now!
Guitar virtuoso Matt Chanway has made a name for himself with well-regarded Canadian death/thrash metal band Assimilation.
Last December, Chanway unleashed his self-titled solo debut album: a sonic masterpiece that merges the old and new school. Razor sharp riffs meld with soaring solos; progression with power! Inspired by the likes of George Lynch and Jeff Loomis, Chanway (who has a diploma in guitar performance from the University of West London) is the ideal guitar hero for the 21st century!
Describing his sound as “melodic, relentless, energetic progressive metal” and influenced by the likes of Nevermore, Circus Maximus, Tony Macalpine, Aghora and Revocation, Chanway explains that “initially this music was written for a progressive metal project called Chancellor in 2011. After leaving that band, I gradually morphed the tracks into instrumental tunes.”
Chanway reveals his writing process is always honest and organic. “I write all of the guitar parts, generally starting from one theme or motif and just continually building upon it, to create a flowing cohesive piece. Never forcing or rushing anything for the sake of releasing new music. The guitar themes are authentic; the riffs are catchy and addictive.”
Teaming up with Prog-Sphere.com, Chanway demonstrates his shredding skills with his new playthrough for his track ‘271114′
Chanway also states that this is also no studio project and is looking forward to playing his album live, promising “a very authentic recreation of some very challenging music, of course instrumental music is always a different ballgame in a live context. People tend to hone in on the guitar a lot more, and the unique voice it can bring as the band leader!
As well as his own solo album, his band Assimilation will unleash their eagerly-awaited debut album ‘The Laws of Power’ on March 17, 2017, Chanway’s new album is the perfect instrument precursor to that! Not content to rest on his laurels, Chanway is also planning a further instrumental album for 2018.
1. Evidence of the Arcane (6:22) (instrumental)
2. The Receiver of Wisdom (6:58) (instrumental)
3. Harbinger 2.1 (8:24) (instrumental)
4. 271114 (6:48) (instrumental)
5. Eyes In The Sky (5:48) (instrumental)
6. Lucidity (6:26) (instrumental)
