This evening marks my fourth GWAR show, and I am pleased to report that they are still excellent performers. I also had the distinct pleasure of interviewing (and subsequently being murdered by) GWAR guitarist Pustulus Maximus.

But before the bloodshed, first up was Oakland, CA’s GHOUL.

GHOUL

I would describe GHOUL as an amusingly thrashy tribute to the band that would soon take the stage, GWAR.

GHOUL’s stage show is replete with silly props, weapons, grotesquely masked monsters, and plenty of banter about the story of the band’s characters. Seem familiar?

And of course, some measure of fake blood spurting out of heads and severed limbs is required.

While I enjoyed GHOUL’s efforts, I’ll conclude by saying that they weren’t my cup of tea. Their schtick is a little too close to the source from which they draw their stage show.

GWAR

As always, GWAR knows how to make an entrance. After a moody intro to Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs”, GWAR’s frontman Blothar promptly emerged with a massive sword to decapitate a couple of pesky human soldiers who are trying to plant a nuke at GWAR’s Antarctic headquarters. Plenty of blood then gushed from their necks onto the sold-out crowd below.

The storyline for “The Blood of Gods” tour involves GWAR being sold out by their opportunistic manager, Sleazy P. Martini, to GLOMCO, a global corporation whose only purpose is to make money and drain the fun out of everything.

GWAR soon overthrows GLOMCO’s chains after Sleazy reneges on the deal, leaving Blothar and Bonesnapper free to mutilate their CEO for the pleasure of all.

They are assisted in their battle by a most unlikely ally, Sawborg Destructo, brother(?) of former GWAR arch-nemesis Techno-Destructo. Sawborg is injured in the battle, and he persuades GWAR to repair his damaged body. Pustulus, taking on the role of the wiser party, warns Blothar that Sawborg will most certainly betray GWAR once he is restored.

To nobody’s surprise, Sawborg does just that. A grand melee ensues, but naturally GWAR is victorious and viciously disembowels Sawborg.

Overall, GWAR still puts on a killer show. Frontman Blothar does an admirable job, even though the shoes of the departed Oderus Urungus will always be far too massive to ever fill. Their tribute song to Oderus, “Phantom Limb”, makes for a touching moment. Another highlight included an appearance from Father Bohab, who had his giant cross stuffed up his rear by bassist Beefcake the Mighty. The setlist focused heavy on their new album, which meant leaving out some pretty massive chunks of their discography.
