This year the Danish hard rock/metal festival Copenhell turned 7 years old. The festival has grown bigger and bigger each year and for the first time in their history, the three-day festival tickets were totally sold out. This year the festival played host to names like Alice Cooper, Scorpions, Megadeth, Trivium, King Diamond (performing the ABIGAIL album), Rival Sons, Entombed A.D, Amon Amarth and for the last time on Danish soil – Black Sabbath. If you’re curious about what happened during the three days of metal madness in the rain and sun then read on…..

And so had the time come for the 7th annual version of the wild and crazy metal festival Copenhell in Copenhagen Denmark. New for this year was the ability to buy one day tickets to each of the three days, and it was also possible to purchase a tent and a spot at the camp site. Last December the festival announced that Black Sabbath was going to do their final show in Denmark at Copenhell. Other acts that were announced were Alice Cooper, Megadeth, Rival Sons, Converge, Epica, and Helhorse, amongst others. They festival also announced that King Diamond was returning to the festival, and in January the one day tickets to Saturday were sold out. The festival has grown a lot during these seven years and gets better and better each time. The festival continues to book bands in various metal genres which is a good thing; I’m glad that they have moved from being first and foremost an extreme metal festival to become a more mixed metal event. Entombed A.D, Scorpions and Amon Amarth were announced in February and altogether 41 acts were scheduled to perform at the festival’s three stages. A few one day tickets to Thursday and Friday were still available and if we got it right, the festival had sold about 15,000 tickets to the entire weekend and 5,000 one-day tickets which meant that the festival was sold out. Great job!

As in previous years, the main sponsors were Hi-Fi Klubben, Jägermeister and Royal Beer. Besides music there were also side shows and live music in the Biergarten where people could sing metal karaoke to a live band. You could listen to the cover act Mandowar, participate in Beer banger (where you could headbang and win beer), and there were the Danish Masters in Destruction, tattoo artists, and the Copenhell metal quiz. This year also saw the return of Asgard – the viking village, so in other words there was a lot  do when killing time between shows.
