What was your first reaction when you were invited to play Calgary Metal Fest V?

Rob: We all felt like it is a show we need to play, this might be the best lineup of Canadian metal bands ever. It’s always great to play with Razor, who we have a lot of history with.

When was the last time you played in Calgary?

Rob: The very last Noctis fest, I believe in 2013.

When was the last time you played with the other bands on the bill?

Rob: The only band on the bill we have played with is Razor, the last time was in Winnipeg, 2015 at the Manitoba Metalfest…and a million times before that.

What do you think is the significance of being part of such a unique festival bill, for the first time?

Rob: All the bands are some of the biggest names in Canadian metal history, so that is pretty significant. It feels like one of those shows that people will be talking about for years, definitely feels culturally historic. The venue looks incredible.

Was it hard to get everyone in the band together to be able to do this gig?

Rob: Yes, we had a few obstacles to clear, but we found a way. As I said, this is an event I am sure all the bands involved are looking forward to being part of. Seeing the original Exciter perform is something all of Sacrifice is looking forward to as much as anyone else. Last time I saw them, I was about 16 years old, right at the front of the stage in Toronto.

Are you going to be playing special retro set, or conversely will you be showcasing any new and/or undressed material?

Rob: No, just an ultra truculent and belligerent set of Canadian thrash metal.

Are there any songs that you just ‘have’ to include in your set-list?

Rob: Absolutely. I’m pretty sure we might get arrested if we didn’t play Reanimation, we all have songs we like to perform, but we like to mix the set up occasionally as well.

Are you bringing any merchandise to sell?

Rob: Right now, all I can guarantee is t-shirts, but we may dig up some other stuff.

How do these on-off gigs compare to a tour for example? Is there a heightened sense of energy?

Rob: Sacrifice almost exclusively do one-off shows, and yes, there is definitely more excitement and energy. We play only a handful of shows during a year so the anticipation builds for us. It’s kind of nice to have this kind of focus for one show.

When can we expect some new material from the band?

Rob: We have some material, but no plans to record at the moment. We won’t enter the studio unless we know it is completely face melting. Sacrifice don’t tour, so there is no pressure to release an average album with one good song.

We look forward to seeing you in September!

Rob: We do as well! See you then.
