Hann Ng “Hanntu”

December 30th 1985 – March 6th 2015

On March 6, 2015, we were shocked to learn that one of our own, the bright, talented and young Hann Ng, had been killed in a traffic accident in his home country of Malaysia.  We would like to send out deepest and sincerest condolences to all of Hann’s family and friends.

On this page we pay tribute to some of his work with Metal-Rules.com by featuring some of his words and photos.

RIP HANN

RIP HANN

Hann was from Klang, Malaysia and was living in Shah Alam, Malaysia. A few of us here knew Hann personally, some from his time living and studying in London and some from meeting him at metal festivals.

Hanntu began writing for Metal-Rules.com back in 2007 while he was living in London, England. The first live review he did for Metal-Rules.com was for Celtic Frost & Kreator at KOKO Camden, London on March 18, 2007. Kreator were one of the bands he adored. He said: “My first ‘gig’, so to speak, for Metal-Rules.com started off freezing cold. London has been relatively warm for the past few weeks, but it chose today of all days to hail and snow and bluster while I was standing in line for 2 hours to watch the mighty Kreator at KOKO Camden. Bollocks to that for a start.”

Hann, RIP metal brother

We remember his excitement at getting to interview one of his favorite bands, Amon Amarth. “I think it’s been quite apparent from my live reviews that I’m a pretty huge fan of Amon Amarth, and when the opportunity arose to do an interview with frontman Johan Hegg a couple of months ago, I jumped at the chance. I found him incredibly friendly, personable with a wicked sense of humour.”

Although he loved a lot of thrash and death metal, he had a soft spot for power metal such as Gamma Ray, Helloween, and Blind Guardian. Having covered Helloween & Gamma Ray: Shepherds Bush Empire, London, 8th January 2008, he said,“The highlight of the night for me personally was when Gamma Ray came out to join Helloween onstage for the last two encores “Future World” and “I Want Out”. To see Kai onstage again with his former bandmates Michael and Markus was amazing, something I didn’t think I’d ever see.”

Arto of Metal-Rules.com fondly remembers Hanntu:

Hann Ng aka Hanntu joined the Metal-Rules.Com squad in 2007. He covered a plenty of gigs in England by writing awesome articles. Above all, his pics were outstanding and eye-capturing.  I met Hanntu personally at the Metalcamp festival in Slovenia in 2009. We had talked before about seeing each other at Metalcamp and to have the opportunity sit and talk. And We did. We spent a memorable week in the rainy and muddy Metalcamp. We sat for hours in the beer tent talking and joking and taking weird pics while it was raining heavy outside. He was friendly and guy with the big metal heart and had the great sense of humor and was totally amused by us Finns. I remember Hanntu wasn’t able to take so many pics because the rain had ruined his camera. The whole week was a brutal survival camp. Even though our paths didn’t cross again, as Hann moved back to Malaysia from England, we kept the contact constantly through the net and had hilarious chat sessions. Hanntu was a real activate person in the Malaysian metal scene. Although he reduced his time in writing for Metal-Rules.Com to focus on other things, but he was, is, and will forever be a part of Metal-Rules.com.  He was definitely eager to arrive at Finland to experience deer/moose hunting.  I for one will miss him tremendously. Rest in peace my friend.

Jo Blackened of Metal-Rules UK:

I don’t know where to start…if it wasn’t for Hann I wouldn’t be here doing what I do now, I owe him everything. I remember when I first started out in photography & the many weeks I spent with him teaching me what I know now & convincing me that I was good enough to join the UK Team. A few years later I set up the M-R UK Team and am now an editor.

He was one of the most amazing, compassionate & friendly people you could meet, with such an intense love for what he did & for music. He will be missed terribly by everyone who knew him in the UK & it saddens me he will not be with us for this year’s festivals. We will all raise our drinks to him & I shall continue doing what I do for Metal-Rules.com, always in his memory. My condolence go out to his family & loved ones.

Children of Bodom

The Astoria, London, 8th March 2008

“Phew, three nights of metal in a row, and my head is pounding, even as I write this review. But I certainly was not going to pass up the chance to see Children of Bodom up close and personal…..Well, they blew me away that night, and they played another crazy yet controlled gig tonight as well. I don’t know if those rumours then were true or not, but I can say that they were professional as hell tonight. I look forward to seeing them at Wacken this year. Until then, kippis to the Hate Crew!”

“The commercial appeal of Nightwish is impossible to overstate. Three consecutive nights in London is extremely rare”

Kamelot

Islington Academy, London, 4th April 2008

“One of the front-runners of US Power Metal, Kamelot kicked off their second European tour in support of THE GHOST OPERA here in London. Billed as the Rule The World Tour 2008, this time they bring along guitar virtuoso Gus G and his band Firewind, who are perennial favourites here in London, and are always guaranteed a good reception.”

Iced Earth

Matt Barlow interview, August 2008
“One of the highlights of this year’s Bloodstock Open Air festival in England was the opportunity to see Iced Earth with Matt Barlow. Along with many other Iced Earth fans, I consider Matt Barlow to be the definitive voice of Iced Earth; and while Ripper Owens is a fine vocalist in his own right, the Iced Earth sound is pretty much incomplete without Matt’s soulful and emotional croon. When I was offered the chance to interview the man himself, I jumped at it, although I only had ten minutes.”

Nile

“What a superb billing! The (almost) perfect combination of bands to showcase the main strands of death metal: the technical American school, represented by Nile, vs the Swedish movement with Grave in its corner. Technicality and brutality on the one hand, dirty moshing and midtempo menace on the other. A match made in heaven, and this was reflected in the crowd; a sold-out Underworld for a death metal gig…”

Dragonforce

“Tonight’s not a night for doom and gloom, it’s a night for donning silly face paint and fake animal hair, raising your battle-axes (plastic) and your drinking horns (plastic), and rocking out with all the gusto you can manage. Yup, it’s Turisas and Dragonforce, two sold out nights at the London Astoria.”

Morbid Angel

“Our mini-contingent flew out from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, dead early in the morning to arrive in Changi, Singapore, well before lunch time. At the venue, we were fortunate enough to wander around the loading area where the band and crew were beginning to arrive from their hotel.”

Metal Camp 2009

Full review

“Metal Camp 2009 for Trease and I started with a 6 a.m. flight out from London Stansted to Slovenia’s quaint and beautiful capital, Ljubjana. Passing through pine forests and little homesteads from Ljubljana airport, there was a sense of something truly epic brewing in the air.”

Testament at Metalcamp 2009

Testament at Metalcamp 2009

Highlights: Having a chat with Schmier backstage, one of my metal idols. Climbing the damn mountain in the rain, in shorts, sandals and fogged-up glasses and a beer in one hand. Getting hammered on grappa while the rain bashed down and the lightning flashed and thunder roared.”

Album reviews by Hanntu

Orphaned Land – The Never Ending Way of ORwarriOR (March 2010)
“This is not an album without flaws, but the sheer weight of passion, craft, dedication, richness and everything else that the guys and gal of Orphaned Land have imbued into THE NEVER ENDING WAY OF ORWARRIOR makes it a 5/5 for me. There is no other score available for such an album.”

Overkill – Ironbound (Jan 2010)
“It’s a beautiful thing to behold: while most of their contemporaries have split up or sold out, Overkill are still doing their thing, updating and improving but never forgetting where they came from. It’s only January 2010, but this is definitely a keeper for the new year.”

By 2012, Hanntu had scaled back his writing activities due to his, at the time, band, and work. In 2012 he commented on his band’s upcoming show “We’re playing a festival in Vietnam this weekend called the Saigon Deathfest, fucking amazing imagery man. All I can think about is “Charlie don’t surf!” and “The Ride of the Valkyries!“. He still maintained a presence on our staff forum, and still would help from time to time with editing even as recently as January 2015.

You will never be forgotten Hanntu. RIP.

For posterity’s sake, the next page is a copy of the information that was on Hann’s Metal-Rules.com staff profile page.
