Rating: 4.5/5

ZZ in HD, it doesn’t get much better than this.

Always liked ZZ Top since I first heard them back in the 80’s. It was their videos from ELIMINATOR that were plastered all over TV at the time that I got introduced to them. Since then I discovered the earlier tunes and even enjoyed some albums that came out since. This show was shot at the infamous Montreux Jazz Festival last year on the LA FUTURA tour.

As with most of the Montreux series the audio and video quality are top notch. The picture is sharp and the colors vibrant. The audio is clear and well mixed.

The concert itself is typical ZZ as we have seen previously. The little ‘ol band from Texas play with precision but at time look to be going through the motions, especially Frank Beard. His playing is flawless but he looks to be uninspired and not into it. He keeps his head down and just plays away. It is a typical Top setlist with a few surprises thrown in for the festival and to plug the latest album. It’s good to hear a few tunes that you don’t normally hear especially new ones like “Chartreuse” which is an excellent track that works well in the set as does “I Gotsta Get Paid”. The little tribute to Montreux Jazz Festival founder Claude Nobs was very nicely done and quite a surprise.

This is by far the best ZZ Top concert on the market today. Highly recommended.
